Everything about your assessment rings true. I encountered every version of the term at the same-time, and have been puzzling it out.

I trust you more than other sources. When I delve into China-related stuff, I'm wary of CCP propaganda... and a side-effect of CCP's tactics/ is that they seem to 'set the pace' & their opponents then resort to the same tactics. I browsed two academic papers on gōngzhī -- are the grad students who wrote them Chinese spies? What are the politics of the anonymous reddit users who offered translations? What is Google Translate hiding, in their results?

Since my prior posts, another redditor responded... to me asking for a translation/explanation of f_tp's zombie cartoon. Either this redditor's bias is on full display/ or the apparent bias may be a vehicle... for a propaganda agent posting 'in character' to further some agenda. How should I know?
