Can't remember if I've relayed this story before. In medical school, I was in a group of 35 students who were mixed & matched every 8 weeks or so for 2 years into discussion groups of 7 students for case-based learning. The class was 10 women & 25 men, thus ~29% women (unlike today, where women comprise 50% or more of med school classes). The powers that be routinely put 2 women & 5 men into each group, otherwise making the assignments in what appeared to be a random fashion.

After a few rounds, the women got together to talk. Turns out all but 2 of the women felt that their voice wasn't equal to the men's in these small groups (they felt they weren't listened to, heard, taken seriously, variations on that theme).

For what it's worth - and maybe this is coincidence, but maybe not - the 2 women who had not experienced that, who felt they were participating equally without effort, that they were listened to & taken seriously...and also that the other woman in their group was, too, whoever that person was - were the woman who had gone to an all women's college (100% women in undergrad class) and the woman (me) who had gone to a mostly male college (16% women in undergrad class). We had also both done graduate work in biological sciences; my graduate program had <10% women, so to me med school seemed like it was gloriously full of women, relative to my prior educational experiences.

I recall noticing that a couple of the other women in the med school groups tended to present their information & ideas in a tentative fashion in these groups, but also that they hadn't majored in a science (most of the students had, and as above some of us had done graduate work in science). In talking with those classmates, it turned out (understandably) they felt like they were "behind" in the science and weren't as sure of their knowledge. It didn't seem like it was inherent to being female, other than - sure - women tend to use more tentative & collaborative phrasing than men, in general.

After the women met & shared experiences, the other 8 women asked to be have one round in which there was one discussion group that was all women. I never did figure out how the math was supposed to work on that one. But administration said no, which I thought was the right decision. Further along in training, you don't get to pick the group you're in, and you have to be able to work with the people you end up with. Ends up being more diverse that way, as a side benefit.

Anyway, now many of the women I work with are surgeons. Surgeons, male or female, do not tend to interact with others in a tentative fashion. :)
