Then there's the question of how welcoming and inclusive bird-watching groups currently are. Writer, editor, and former American Birding Association board member Paul Baicich, whose father is named Giuseppe and whose family background is Italian, says lack of inclusiveness is nothing new.

"About 120 years ago, birding organizations were anti-immigrant," he says. Today, "There is an ingrown quality to lots of the birding communities that they may not be aware of," which may appear to newcomers as exclusivity. Birders should realize there is no such thing as an "overdeveloped welcome mat," and take every opportunity to invite outsiders in.
Oh fuck. My birding is also not diverse enough. I am such a giant shitlord!

No. Everyone has a different approach. Nugent's was to give them plenty of chances to correct themselves & benefits of the doubt. What he has built up is a very solid case for any of his core supporters & constituents that these US based SJWers are completely off their rocker and unreasonable.

The SJL is going to have a much more difficult time trying to smear Nugent without also making themselves look incredibly bad. Nugent did what needed to be done to help shift opinions of the more middle ground "I haven't looked into it" crowd.

He makes it more acceptable for major organizations to say... we aren't inviting these nut cases over anymore.
Nothing you say is inconsistent with what he could have done 18 months ago. Nothing has changed, just more victims including many Nugent could have supported, as he did with Dawkins, yet he failed to do so. That includes his own co worker who was attacked several times on twitter. I am not commenting on his approach which is simply to provide them with the rope to hang themselves. Common sense and highly effective.

I simply do not believe that the opinion formers are so damn thick as to not know what has been going on for ages and that sooner or later it will affect them no matter what part of the world they are in. So they kept quiet deliberately or were willfully ignorant. Being forced to deal with it, as Nugent has been, is hardly brave. The brave bit is he will not buckle under as so many have.

But I am hugely disappointed that while many voices have been crying out in the wilderness trying to get people to see what was happening they only bother to grace us with their attention when they absolutely have to. So I give them no credit for that at all.

More womyn would be interested in birding if it didn't have such deep ties to patriarchy and rape culture.

PZ has memoryholed Carrie Poppy's involvement.
PZ Myers appears (according to Shermer's lawyers) to have made several large mistakes in his accusation; first of all, he passed on an accusation at third-hand, passed to him by "Carrie" (identified by Shermer's lawyers as Carrie Poppy), then he edited an update to his own blog post to remove mention of Carrie, appearing to make it look like the accusation had been made directly to him. As put in the cease-and-desist letter, it looks all too much like a mistaken attempt at bolstering credibility.

Oh Opheliar, you hideous old hag, you.

She has an (of course) copy/paste post about orthodox jews on a flight, and a woman, and demanding the woman move, and all the usual cuntishness from orthodox jews.

The interesting thing for me was a comment by one of her regulars, who left this charmingly brief shitlet:

http://i.imgur.com/cyArO6z.png

Dude, this is pussy talk. If I am ever seated next to a jew - period. I don't care what denomination they follow of their stinking jewery - on an airplane I start by getting my uncircumcised cock out and spinning it around in front of their kids' faces. I then show them a non-jew asshole, right up close, and shit on their dinner trays. Next I get a copy of the torah out, spit on it, rip a couple of pages out, and then wank frantically until I jizz all over it. I usually finish by shoving the cum-covered torah down my throat until I gag, and then puke all over the kids and their crazy pappa.

I have never yet been arrested because cops hate the jews just like the rest of us, right "moarscienceplz"?

Haha. It is funny that most people don't like it when you have a deck that wins! I mean, why play a game if you don't play to win.

Magic can be, and often is, really cheesy. You can win the game by making a deck with a few hooks. People don't want to make their deck designed specifically to kill your deck, so they bitch about your deck so you stop playing it.

If I got back into Magic again I would use a common pile of cards. I would randomly pass them out to the players the night before and let people build a deck. Then everyone plays their deck the next day. It is totally fair, always challenging, and different every night.
My best friend used the two same decks for years: a rat-based full black and a superfast full blue. I never once managed to win against him. The bastard.
Back in the day, I used to fare pretty well on tournaments with a version of this deck. You will notice that all but three non-basic lands are either common or uncommon cards, which means it was perfect for cheap bastards like myself to build it and play (I didn't have money back then to buy all the fancy cards for the fancier decks).

Then the next edition came about, the metagame shifted, and freaking Astral Slide/Mirake Wake decks started to crush everything. But it was fun while it lasted, winning tournaments with quality cheap children's card games.

Now I found both Hearthstone and Duel of Champions to satisfy all my card game needs, without having to spend a nickel. If I could just make Zoolock disappear from the world...

I wonder if that technique is recommended to fight off the Jews on the best manuals over the subject of warding off against the assassins of Our Lord Jesus Christ:

PS: While I was typing this post, MY INTERNET WENT OFF! IT'S THE ZIONIST CONSPIRACY! The cunning Jews are ever conspiring. Be vigilant, my friends!

PS2: I notice that the repitilian Jew has his elongated body over Africa, Europe and North America, but South America is free. You're all going to suffer under Das Juden boots, but the tropical paradises will stand. Não passarão!

First it was "all GG people are manbabies"

Then "they live in their moms basements"

Then "we won't date them"

WTF ....

You think they want to date someone who hates their hobbies?

You think they want to be talked down to constantly?

How deluded are these people ?

LOL, just realized that "I'd probably like a bunch more of y'all if we were to meet" came across wrong.

The 'Pit is a very comfortable place, thanks to everyone who participates, with the gross or boring stuff readily addressed by scrolling down.

There are posters I'm particularly fond of, but until or unless we meet I find it hard to say I "like" the person behind the nym. And, likewise, there are probably people I like IRL who I'd find annoying online. I'm going to guess this is true for other people, too.

I would be much more amenable to this approach of his if it managed to apply to his arguments as well. Also, not owning up when he has been "clarified" for is utterly disingenuous. He may be great in meat space, but on-line, his dishonesty and selective amnesia is what earns him many people's disdain.

Material for Ada Initiative “Ally Skills Workshop”, including slide set, is linked on this page: http://adainitiative.org/what-we-do/wor ... -training/

The quotes below are from some of the slides (and notes for presenters for each of those slides), from the link at that site. Bolding below was all added by me.

The title slide says the workshop is for:
Men learning to support women in their workplaces and communities - in real-time
So: the target audience is men, the goal is to teach men.

The format focuses on small group discussions of ~15 scenarios.

There's some introduction including 3 slides of sneezing cats (yes, really).

The slide about breaking up into small groups (slide 12) says:
Gender diverse groups are really important: half the benefit of the workshop is men hearing for the first time what their women colleagues have experienced.

So, it’s anticipated that women will be attending this workshop for men to learn how to support women.

Slide 13 then advises, in part:
Choose a “gatekeeper”: someone whose job is to call on people who aren't talking as much and make sure they get time to speak
and the Notes for slide 13 say:
The gatekeeper is necessary to stop one or two people from dominating the discussion, and is good real-world practice of an ally skill.
Background accomplished, here's scenario 1 (slide 15):
Creating a friendly environment

A woman you don't know is standing near your group at a conference or similar event in your field. She is alone and looks like she would rather be talking to people.
The notes slide says:
Goal response: Introduce yourself to the woman, ask what brings her to the event, and then offer to introduce her to the rest of the group. Points to cover:
Avoid appearance of hitting on her by keeping it quick, inviting her to join the group.
If you are physically intimidating, ask someone else to do this.
Do: ask what brings her to the event, how she likes it so far. Don't: ask what she does, ask her name, touch her, stand close, ask about her partner.
Note that the men are supposed to be guessing that a woman standing along would rather be talking to people. Not that a man who "[is] physically intimidating" (which may be an immutable characteristic) should not approach. (Does this include black men? Men holding coffee cups?)

Note that this is phrased as being about approaching women, rather than approaching anyone standing alone in what is otherwise a group setting - some of who may wish to talk to other people, but some of who will not care to do so.

The list of what to do & not do seems like pretty basic stuff. And people who need to be clued in that they shouldn't touch, stand close, or ask about partner right off the bat when starting to talk to a stranger, seem pretty unlikely to be attending an Ada Ally workshop.

Right after scenario 1 comes this reflection on the process (slide 16):
Things to Notice
  • Who is speaking most in your group?
  • Is someone having difficulty being heard?
  • Are there patterns related to gender?
  • How do these discussions compare to ones you have in other contexts?
The notes for slide 16:
The workshop itself is a good place to practice ally skills like listening, amplifying women's voices, giving credit where it is due. Be sure to assure people that they don't need to be embarrassed if they realized they were dominating the conversation during the first scenario; we are here to learn.
So, the assumption here seems to be that the men will have dominated this discussion (despite someone having been assigned as gatekeeper just 2 slides ago to make sure everyone had a chance to pipe up, even those who didn't want to).

With this slide, the men attending are supposed to learn that even though they’re the ones here to benefit from the workshop, they should have instead been “amplifying women’s voices” in their group and listening to the women.

(It does say “people” might realize they were dominating, perhaps meaning Ada Initiative staff realize that women might have been dominating the discussion...ba ha ha, as if.)

Here's scenario 2, in full (slide 17):
Creating a friendly environment

You are deciding where and when to hold an event for your tech community
The notes for slide 17 say:
Points to hit: how comfortable women feel traveling in that area at that time of day, availability of public transit/parking/bike parking, if childcare is available, activities that are stereotypically male in a way that excludes women, amount and kind of alcohol (if any), having a code of conduct or anti-harassment policy, the connotations of the location (e.g., anything in Las Vegas)

This is a good time to make the point that drinking alcohol does not excuse harassment or assault. Behavior of drunk people varies according to social expectations; set the expectation that they can't harass or assault women. Anyone unable to avoid doing these things while drunk has a responsibility not to drink.
I'm picturing a budding ally attending the workshop raising his hand to ask whether people who get horny when they drink & might appear to consent enthusiastically then later regret and/or not remember it, also have a responsibility to drink.

You can look at other scenarios by following the link above.

Jumping way ahead to scenario 11 (slide 28):
Intervening in harassment of women

Someone makes a joke about sex at a party at work. Everyone is holding an alcoholic drink.

(At a company at which discussion of sex is not a work-related topic.)
Notes for slide 28:
Goal response: “Hey, that's not okay.” “Hey, that's really sexist,” and change the subject. Consider bringing it up with the joker's manager.
Long-term solutions: Reduce alcohol at work functions and improve sexual harassment prevention training.
Emphasize that workplace rules against sexual harassment and assault still apply when everyone is drinking. For numerous examples in which alcohol was used to excuse such things, see: http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Time ... _incidents
If the argument is alcohol made them do it, point out they shouldn't drink at work functions in that case.
Well, yeah, alcohol at work functions can be tricky. But why is "a joke about sex" a sexist thing? (Turns out there's a slide that addresses that, titled "Why is talking about sex at work harmful to women?")

Slide 34, the next-to-last:
Advanced Ally skills
  • Don't expect praise and credit for not being sexist or fighting sexism
  • Follow and support women leaders
  • Assume women have more knowledge and wait for invitation to help or explain
  • Follow your discomfort - if something makes you feel bad, find out more and understand why before reacting
Notes for slide 34:
People learning ally skills are vulnerable to becoming patronizing and self-righteous. This slide attempts to prevent this and give people the tools to continue learning and growing.
"Vulnerable to becoming patronizing and self-righteous" - preparing path for"corrections" to behavior - and to encourage groveling? "Continue learning and growing"...by not questioning the existence of sexism, that's off-topic per slide 5, and going over to geekfeminism for your 101 training as advised multiple times during the slide set?

It's not that I think sexism doesn't exist - but it goes both ways, and several of their examples assume passive behavior = female behavior (standing alone when other people are in groups, having your idea passed over at a meeting until a man later brings it up) when these may reflect characteristics other than gender - for example, assertiveness & self-confidence - that may be unequally distributed in the population, but which men are not immune to.

Here is the deal. If your coworker's and work environment is so tight that you can not let your hair down, then you should not, under any circumstances serve alcohol. It is just a recipe for disaster. Tight coworkers heading to a bar after work, which is a non-work function. Perfectly fine. Just don't do it with people who will pitch a fit about humans being human.

Yeah I mean the 7 year old is playing littlest pet shop with his brother and sisters right now but let me pull him away from that, have him create an account, explain to him what is going on here, and ask him to comment on the subject.

Tell him no beheading or electrocution gifs and we'll be okay.

It's nice you're protecting him from all that aspie hatred though. I commend you.

It's not that I am protecting him from hate. I honestly try not to do that. My goal is that he recognizes shit like that and learns to deal with it.

No I issues are much the same as people who have issues with asshats claiming twitter PTSD. They are people out there really having to deal with this shit It has sickenly become fashionable to claim to be on the spectrum (or at least say your kid is) I meet people all the time who makes such claims. I give them the benefit of the doubt and once we get to talking found out that their story is complete b.s. either someone told them they(or their kid) was an "aspie" or some doctor or a school made the declaration. None of the years of testing and various experts it takes to truly get a grasp on the condition are involved.

And it is a condition. A serious life will never be the normal, worry about what will happen to your child when you are gone fucking a condition. Calling it by some cute little name doesn't help that at all.

I just realized I still have 11 euros on my Paypal account. Any Pitter running a donation scam where I could donate? Or anyone can point me to a worthwhile charity?

That's the maximum I can give right now, but better put it to good use than let it sleep on the account.

*snip a bunch of patronizing bullshit*
Ladies and gentlemen, this here is a perfect example of sexism through infantilization and condescension, to both men and women (not to mention the elephant in the room: non gender-binary, who seem absent from Skep's tidbits.)

I don't know, I think just sending them to Lsuoma will be more logical. I mean, I hardly ever thanked the Fascist Tit for this place. It's about time I should do so (plus, 11 euros are, like, a huge fraction of what A+ raised for their 2nd anniversary).

Did anyone see the Daily Show last Thursday? Jessica Williams did one of those "look how much harassment women get just walking down the street" stories. You'd think that if you did a story like that, you'd be sure to include some shocking footage, right? Well, the worst thing anybody said to her was "You have great hair".

At this point, the Daily Show I remember would probably have gone in the opposite direction and made the story about the women who exaggerate the harassment they receive. But nope, she doubled down instead, continuing on as if she'd demonstrated her point, hammering away at the theme of how awful it is to be spoken to by men.

Then she filled a room full of women, so they could tell their stories. Here at least was some genuine red meat. One woman said she'd once had a guy say he'd like to take a dump on her tits. I don't know if it was Mykeru or not. Still, I wish I'd been there. I'd have said that I once had a guy walk up to me, drunk out of his mind, say I looked like a queer, and punch me in the face. Got anything to top that? Then I guess you lose the oppression war, princess; sit your ass back down.

I don't know what's happened to the Daily Show. They don't know who they should be making fun of anymore, and they don't know where the funny is either.

I was walking down the street in my quaint little city a few days ago and a guy told me I was "a hottie". Now, the guy was probably either sarcastic or very gay, very drunk and very desperate, but if I were a feminist I could claim I was harassed.

SJWs poison everything they touch (sadly, including Cracked). When you allow SJWs views in entertainment all the entertaining bits will disappear. They're more whining and annoying than Bible thumpers.

Good comedy pokes fun of everything and everyone. It makes it accessible. As far as not knowing where the funny is. They have been doing this every day for how long? You are going to have a tough time coming up with fresh ideas. That is why they have a team of writers. A lot of material ends up hitting the cutting room floor before it even gets filmed. And sometimes, you have to let your talent and writers try something out so that they can cut their teeth. You don't always win in the comedy wars.
