Adminstrative and Setup Questions

#1

Post by John Greg »

I am sure I will have more of these as time passes.

1. Are you going to allow PMs (private messaging)?

2. Are you going to post any sort of however vague or specific posting guidelines?

2a. If Yes, is that going to be built via a group effort, or an administrative decision?

3. Can we have a wave smiley?

4. NEW-Q: Are all forums going to be open to viewing by the general public, no registration or login required??

2. Are you going to hire, so to speak, moderators and/or administrators?

3. Are you going to post any sort of however vague or specific posting guidelines?

3a. If Yes, is that going to be built via a group effort, or an administrative decision?

4 Can we have a wave smiley?
1. Yes. It's already allowed for all registered members. PM me if it doesn't work.

2. Almost certainly "yes" as soon as I can figure out how to select people without offending other people. That's a poser!

3. First of all we need an anti-harassment policy, no? (RDH) That's a toughie, too. I'm leaning towards how Abbie did it at ERV: no editing of posts, no deleting of posts, banning only for supreme morons who link-whore and do other shit like that. I know that putting something in place retrospectively can derail and destroy community (if we ever get one going here), but it may be necessary for legal/sanity reasons.

3a. If Yes, then it WILL be a group effort. See 2 for who the group will be.

4. I already have an article detailing how to add smilies: when I work my way through that, then yes; yes you can...

Lsuoma: You might want to increase the comment / page count. 10 is pretty low.

John: You have some degree of control over PMs in your user control panel.

Hi, a couple of suggestions, feel free to discard them.

People are used to a single-threaded discussions. Not everyone will follow us here, simply because it's unfamiliar and different from ERV.
I'd recommend to start small. Many sections, topics and threads may atomise the discussion and act as a further put-off to the lazier.

If possible, increase avatar size.

The confirmation code as it is may be difficult to read.

Increase font size.

More to come, after coffee kicks in.

I will at some point contribute graphics to make this looks truly slimy, if needed. Just need to find the time.

Ad addendum, dear LSuoma, I'd delete right away the -isms and science section. Unnecessary now, imo.

Let people come and find their way right into the relevant discussion. Also, too many technical threads already. One is basically a duplicate.

You have all my gratitude for undertaking the enormous tasks involved in the migration of this moloch, mate.

Agreed. Too much choice is often worse than not enough.
If possible, increase avatar size.
Think that's a phpbb bowels recode - not a config option. But it's been a while since I've run one of these, may be wrong.
Increase font size.
That's a user side thing - <shift> + or -

Forum count trimmed. Now off to reduce the avatar size.

Thanks for all the suggestions - keep 'em coming...

Posters' names should be larger and more visible. I think it would also look better if the box containing avatar and user data were displayed to the left of the comments.

Also, fluid pages are so last decade. Now lots of people have 16:9 monitors. That creates readability issues.

Again, feel free to ignore if I'm being a pain.

Font size increased to 11px from 10px.

Will set confirmation code to recaptcha.

Working on setting width to fixed (will make it 1000px) and putting user details on left, with bigger username.

Just FYI, if you go to slymepit.com or www.slymepit.com, you get an error message. Probably both should redirect to the main page.

Increasing username size in profile block on left requires increasing size of all text in that block. Not sure I want to do that right now.

May be looking for a new theme soon anyway.

LSuoma, should I create a pleasant colour palette in order to give it a more distinctive appearance?

Feel free to do so. I've looked before into making wholesale changes to a phpBB forum and it can get to be a lot of work, so I wouldn't want you to spend a lot of time without a guarantee that I'd incorporate any changes.

I'm going to spend a little time looking at existing prepackaged themes - you might want to take a look to see if there is anything you would suggest as preferable. As indeed, can anyone.

Not a lot of work on my side, really. I could then give you the list of old and new colours side by side. Then, if it's normal CSS, you'd only have to run a find- and-substitute; or just find then paste.
However, I'll have a look at the ready themes if that's easier for you.

Thanks for the offer. My general preference would be for low-key greens: think frogs and toads and slime...
