Keep in mind some LEDs are back to back LED pairs anyway, so you might be able to just rectify in the LEDs themselves. Possibly a "power miser" circuit LED voltage booster might help. As I said, I do believe the biggest problem will be the mechanical part. Unless you also happen to have a machine shop too.

As I am currently stuck in this beach-side paradise at Robe, (for the nonce), and my electronix lab is 300km away, that won't be happenning anytime soon.
I could knock up a prototype cct when I get bavk to my lab, and can fire up Proteus design suite.
