But the topic?
Drowning in noise: how accommodating nonsense poisons our discourse
PZ Myers, David Silverman and Sara Passmore

A commitment to freedom of belief and freedom of expression means, to some people, that we should be accommodating of others. After all, their have their right to their beliefs, don’t they? But do they have that right to the extent of not having their views challenged. Is this right? Is there a risk that the language of freedom of belief can be used to protect some specific beliefs from criticism? This is a vast topic but our speakers will address two aspects of it.

David Silverman will talk about what he views as ‘political correctness’ and how compliance with social pressure to respect religion drives undue religious influence in society and ultimately leads to laws that reflect theocratic values in the US and elsewhere.

PZ Myers will talk about the misuse of science. Science is a well-respected enterprise and the public generally regards scientific evidence as the gold standard for good information, but now we face another problem: the appropriation of the mantle of science by charlatans and apologists for nonsense. Our appreciation of good information is being undermined by the 24/7 news cycle, by promotion of fluff and sensationalism by web-based sources, and by marginal cranks whose sense of entitlement allows them to demand greater representation in the name of ‘tolerance’. PZ Myers will discuss some of the excesses of this process and make some suggestions about how we can counter it.

PZ Myers describes himself as “a godless liberal biologist”. He is associate professor of biology at the University of Minnesota Morris, currently working with zebrafish in the field of evolutionary developmental biology. He is an outspoken critic of creationism and intelligent design (for which he has “nothing but contempt”, saying that it is “fundamentally dishonest”). He is founder and co-author of the Pharyngula science blog which in 2006 was listed by the journal Nature as the top-ranked blog by a scientist. He was the American Humanist Association’s 2009 Humanist of the Year and won IHEU’s International Humanist Award in 2011. His book The Happy Atheist was published in 2013.

David Silverman is President of American Atheists and organised the 2012 Reason Rally. He is the first atheist to appear as a regular panellist on American television to present the atheist perspective and has appeared on most major news programs on CNN, NPR, Fox and other networks.

Sara Passmore is the British Humanist Association’s Head of Education and Promotion.
Made all the more amusing by the only woman of the trio (pretty sure PZ and Silverman identify as male) lacking a "talking point". I wonder if the event organizers realize the difference between "scientist" and "educator". It does trigger curiosity in regards to what he's up to with those Zebrafish now though. There is a difference between intolerance and criticism, I'd venture that PZ's brand of "criticism" is more in line with "intolerance", while the people participating in a religion see all criticism as intolerance (whoa parallel of parallels to the FfTB cult and Victimhood Feminists).

Sulman wrote:It feels like common sense is winning, doesn't it? Every month that goes by the SJ brigade poison themselves a little more.
It feels like a general awareness of SJWism as a phenomenon is starting to form (although my perspective is badly skewed). Its a product that strongly appeals to a certain sort of unhealthy psychology & those types make poor faces for any idea or agenda. The more attention they get, the more people won't like what they see.

A lot of people seem to have an intuitive antennae for unhealthy personalities even if they can't follow the issues. Some subconscious intuition just screams "Wrong! Broken! Unhealthy!". I noticed how the Suey Park story seemed to sort of quietly feature her histrionics as much as the issue she was pushing. Its a bit of a non-sequitor, but these screwy types tend to discredit their ideas a bit by the association. And the stuff is too easy to parody or discredit by applying their concepts in ways they never intended.

These folks don't seem to realise how they come across to those outside of their in-group. They're like Scientology, assuming that if only their cult could become more visible it would win everyone over. Their woo is only suited to a small, inbred social enviornment & doesn't play well to a larger, more general audience. They win when they get involved in various unconnected issues but will lose when a whole group or scene starts to see the pattern & connects it to the ideology.

I watched feminism's attempt to impose itself on the atheist/skeptic community & was shocked at how fast the pushback went from a weak, tame generalised whine to informed, well-crafted critiques of feminism itself. A lot of people who were generally sympathetic to it before are now much more aware of it. If SJWism keeps using the same playbook elsewhere the same thing is bound to happen sooner or later.

I'm not sure how much, but I suspect that the general public's attitude toward political correctness works against it too. A lot of the general public associate certain types of things with the pattern of "political correctness". So they may already be apt to see an SJW issue as part of a pattern they don't like.

I'm not even talking about trolling. If these SJWs had a sense of humor, they'd be doing it themselves, to each other. Peezus does a post about christians and then "Jesus" pops in to disagree, or Zvanity calls Dawkins a dickhead and then "Dawkins" shows up in the comments.

Come on, people! It's not that hard to get a wee chuckle out of your audience!

Yeah, but DVDs are capable of carrying a great deal more info than the equivalent of 140 ASCII characters, dummy.

It took me a while to realize that Dawkins, and his friend, James Randi, are slymepitters. In that, they fully support they goals, and every act of harassment and misogyny, of the slime. The evidence is overwhelming, though I tried to deny it for years, especially for Randi, who I genuinely used to admire. I’m grateful that I learned of his true lack of integrity while he’s still alive. That’s the only “good” the slime has ever done. That and keeping me from wasting my time and money on other atheist organizations they’ve similarly helped expose.
And a hearty fuck off to you too Randi!
OHMYGAWD!!! I'm haning with famous atheists and skeptics! Mommy will be so proud!

It's your post not mine, I have so little experience with Muslims that I don't consider it experience. The only one that I know beyond a reasonable doubt was my 7th & 8th grade Social Studies teacher that hated my guts for sleeping through the class and still acing the tests. It made for an interesting two years in junior high. I don't even know that the Farsi speaking locals in Afghanistan were necessarily Muslim, as religion didn't come up. They taught me words like "shitter" and "toilet paper" in Farsi, which I managed to forget in the past 6-7 years.

I don't actively engage with religious types. The ones I do wind up engaging with, I choose not to engage with their choice of religion. Part of that tolerance thing that PZ and Silverman are sharing their personal values on apparently. Somehow I don't think I'm doing it right by their standards.

The problem with many defects is they don't kill you until after you've gone through your peak reproductive years.

However, whether fat women like it or not, a man's primary judgement in the initial dating/attractiveness dance is fitness and fat women really, really pay the price there. And considering there are considerably more eligible women than men in the dating pool at one time that's a problem for fat women.

For every 100 unmarried women there are 88 unmarried men. -U.S. Census Bureau. “America’s Families and Living Arrangements: 2010″

I don't think a rocket scientist to figure it out -- being fat, and therefore self-selected into the least desirable category, just may end your reproductive future. And I think a lot of these people being the fat shaming have that issue. That is, they simply get a date beyond the very small percentage of 'chubby chaser' guys.

"Guys, I've been dealing practically non-stop trolling, harassment, abuse, hostility and dehumanization for the past two weeks."
which could be read as "dealing out", or "dishing out"

What I read the first couple of times:
"Guys, I've been dealing (with) practically non-stop trolling, harassment, abuse, hostility and dehumanization for the past two weeks."

This seems really ethically questionable.
Of course it's "ethically questionable". But it's nothing new at the same time. It's just marketing research, which although they didn't openly state to the people they were "testing", they were conducting their own market research.
It's also a significant indicator of the confirmation bias of the Facebook research "goal". They wanted to see if negative posts would effect people negatively and positive posts effected them in a positive manner, which makes me wonder if they really will/have follow(ed) through on the idea of limiting the "negatives" to encourage generating more data for them via additional posting.
Social science is soft and barely a science at all. Toss in people's facebook status updates and other potential nonsense and what do you get? Shit. People need to stop pretending that what goes on on facebook has anything to do with people's actual lives. I think facebook should do an experiment where they shut off facebook for a month and see what happens to all those addicted ladies.

Mother Charged With Fatal Poisoning of 5-Year-Old Boy: Lacey Spears Is Accused of Intentionally Giving Her Son High Levels of Sodium
http://tinyurl.com/mxjtl9e
So this woman spent about five years torturing her son while sucking down all kinds of accolades, on Facebook and other social media, for being a great mom with a terrible burden. Which, of course, she wasn't.

Now as an adult, I find the in-depth story ( http://tinyurl.com/mcy7e6k ) to be horrifying and is the kind of story that, being older, wiser and sucked in by a Borderline, rings my alarm bells if I hear/read about it because in some respects it's 'too good' (ie unusal) to be true. BTW, I'm not saying she's borderline, I think the assertion of Munchausen by Proxy makes a ton more sense. So, to me, this a crazy person doing crazy person things.

Which brings it back to Rodgers in that a crazy person does crazy things. Yet we have people who can't accept someone like Rodgers is crazy and did crazy things because of being crazy. That anything he did was just whatever his crazy latched onto rather than some societal illness. And I can accept that for this woman, as well.

But I wonder what the SJWs would make of this if I put it in 'YesAllWomen." I'd hate to poison my twitter account because it's work related. But some part of me wants to point out that crazy is crazy and you really can't blame an entire gender, or society, for the crazy acts of a crazy person because to do so is irrational. Which, to me, is one of the ultimate failures of the Social Justice Warriors.

Not that they don't have some valid points. But that they, in their irrationality, take minor issues that contain valid points to absurd levels. I think you'd have to be a complete fuckwit to think that one crazy woman represents all of society and women. Yet that is the 'virtual necklacing' men face because of Rodgers.

http://media.brainz.org/uploads/2009/10/Necklacing.jpg
Commonly practiced in South Africa, Necklacing is unfortunately still quite common today. Necklacing consists of a rubber tire, filled with gasoline, being forced around the victim's chest and arms, and then being set on fire. Necklacing essentially causes the body to be turned into a melted mess, which is why it comes in at number 10 on our list.
Anyway, I doubt this cause will be taken up by the SJWs unless they're able to, somehow, blame white men for it. Inconvenient facts that women and men are more alike in 'bad behaviors' than different just doesn't play well with their "Women Are Wonderful, but Victims" world view.

More like: currently working with fish bought in the local pet shop for some small-time student project. Hasn't published a peer reviewed scientific paper for over a decade. Still manages to get invited as the token scientist to a Humanist conference in Oxford because those humanists are money-squandering idiots who don't do their homework.

These narcissistic fucks seem to think clothing manufacturers exist to serve them, rather than to make a profit. The market for plus-size exercise apparel is, unsurprisingly, miniscule. Not worth the investment. While we're at it, software companies should be required by law to always release a mac OS version of every title.

http://31.media.tumblr.com/84cd66f5df09 ... o1_500.png

I have a 240 lb weight limit for riders, mandated by my liability insurance. Never needed to, but I'd have no hesitation pulling out the bathroom scale I keep in the tack room.

Once had a 300 lb woman in her late 40s take lessons. We told her they'd be ground lessons only until she lost sufficient weight. She leased a horse from us to play with for a while until she found another trainer who'd let her ride.

Also had a 275 lb, 23 yo student with her own draft horse. She rode well, but her Easter ham thighs prevented her from finding the proper position in the saddle. Held her hands too high, because her gut was in the way. Could not execute a one-rein halt for the same reason. And she was in no condition to handle her 1 ton behemoth on the ground. Plus, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Getting a draft horse so you can ride while morbidly obese is not a viable solution, yet it's common. It's not just rider:horse weight ratio. For the horse to carry you without excess strain, you must be a quiet, balanced rider. Most of the "big, beautiful riders" I've encountered are simply not athletic enough to be adequate riders. Even that young gal was easy to unseat, as I demonstrated to her once in a lesson (almost -- I just caused her to lose her balance & flail about.) My underwriter is understandably concerned about the rider injuries. I pity the horses.

Indeed - seems that many of them react according to preprogrammed dogma rather than giving any critical thought to what is presented - formulaic in the extreme, the classic Orwellian "Four legs good, two legs bad".

Necklacing in South Africa is way down, now that the Prawns have eaten most of the old tires.

She's right though. When I want people to think I'm cultured and educated I always say my favourite author is Stephen King. Works every time.
Just give her a break, yeah? She's had a rough time this past couple of weeks.

If you think about it the whole "Die cis scum" thing is madness.
A small minority of hateful bigots demonises and wishes death upon a large section of the population solely because they don't agree with the circumstances of their birth and we're supposed to let them off because it's 'obviously' a joke? Fuck that shit.

I'm all for prohibiting housing & employment discrimination against trans*, and for allowing trans*, who have transitioned under the care of a physician, to be legally registered as their new gender. But neither I nor society have any obligation to bend over backwards* to facilitate Natalie or Zinnia's assorted mental issues.

Even more formulaic still when you remember it was originally reversed as the HGWellian "Two legs good, four legs bad" (The Island of Dr Moreau, 1896). But everything comes around again, as Squealer modified it again into "Four legs good, two legs better". I think the point is that you have to believe whatever it is fashionable to believe and memory-hole (G.O. again) the past.

I get so tired of these people. If something/someone is world-famous and liked by millions, liking them yourself makes you a poser who lies in order to make yourself look... educated and cultured?

However, if you like lesser-known things/people, everyone will think you're all cool and shit.
