Don't roll with the "you people" schtick here, it doesn't fly. We know who we are as individuals, and nobody here can or will silence you. There is robust discussion and open disagreement on a fairly large number of issues, and no banning or editing, unlike most "safe spaces" that also pretend to be places of discussion. PZ bans anyone outright who openly posts here. Show me some robust disagreement on any of the pseudo-scientific elements of feminism or social justice at any of the FTB blogs, please. One place I do agree with the feminists' view is how women are portrayed in comic books. Years ago when my nephew was 5 or 6 he received a free X-Men comic from some restaurant we went to, and he had me read it to him. There was nothing particularly sexist about the plot or dialogue, but the female heroes were nearly always depicted in those unnatural centerfold poses, making those pouty duck faces that straight people inexplicably find sexy. And this was just when they were in their conference room strategizing!

Well, being an anime and manga fangirl myself, I think the sexism present in those mediums garners less attention because the audience in the west for anime and manga are about 50% female. With that ratio publishers and studios don't discriminate in who they objectify, so while the guys get all the ecchi boob jiggling and tentacle-sex content, there's also a fair amount of books and shows sexually objectifying men in the same fashion (see yaoi for a prime example). I think many don't bother in that instance to criticize Japanese content as much since it comes across as equal opportunity appeal to the idea of "sex sells". Western comics haven't captured the same gender balance in readership, which I think attracts more criticism.

That's as stupid as going into romance novels and criticising how males are portrayed. What is the market for comics? 30yo males, so is marketing to males bad or is that sex shaming? What do the men in comics/games look like??? They sure don't look average. Fantasy is fantasy. Is male fantasy any worse than female fantasy? Sex and the City/Mr Big? etc.

I get that some women might be a little uncomfortable in gaming or comic book fandom, if ALL of the female characters are outrageous stereotypes and the men are not (debateable, most of the men are outrageous too, with some exceptions). But I do certainly see a lot of shaming of male sexuality in various feminist purges and critiques of culture.

I'm a man. I am attracted to attractive women. Billions of men are like me in this regard. There is zero bad in these facts. If some women choose to feel bad because of those facts, I owe them nothing. Same goes for me when my female friends have their movie crushes on various decidedly "non-average looking" stars, etc. Feminist critics ignore the meat market as[pect of products aimed at women, ignore that there are plenty of alternatives, and try to make the case that popular products aimed mainly at men, that nobody takes seriously or uses as a guide to life, are somehow demeaning to all women.

Feminist critiques of cultural products are generally a very few good points (most of which are now small or non-issues because of the huge varied markets available), wrapped up in a lot of male-shaming.

Pretty much THIS. I remember one thread a long time ago on pharyngula dealing with why objectification of women is so horrible. It was standard crap theory, about how all women are "reduced to their parts" and not seen as full humans. Somebody asked about what women find attractive in men, and some women confessed to enjoying the lean, defined form of certain male athletes.

Of course, few to none saw this as "objectification". Liking a big ass on a woman? Liking watching said women shaking it in a music video? HORRIBLE OBJECTIFICATION! Enjoying a standard for men that is many times less realistic and just as rooted in the physical? Get wet watching athletes that only a few percent of men could hope to live up to? That's just individual women liking what they like!

Whole big stretches of feminist thought are just old fashioned sex-shaming, particularly of anything men might like.

Having now perused the slymepit, I have to say that my primary reaction is not that it’s a thriving cesspool of hatred, it’s that it’s basically an empty little place where about 6-12 people generate 95% of the posts, and it’s mostly just repetitive crap like, “OMG, did you see what (mock name for FtB blogger) did today?”

They even have threads dedicated to FtB commenters, and again, the surprising thing is not how vile the attacks are (though there are plenty of those), it’s that most of the threads are just two or three posts.

Then the amusing thing is that if you go over to Michael Nugent’s blog and read his recent posts, the slymepit sympathizers are the SAME 6-12 PEOPLE!

Don’t take this as a “avoid the trolls,” “ignore the harassment,” statement, I just hope people recognize that this group is discreet and pathetic. They seem larger because of the way the amplify each other on social media sites and YouTube, but holy crap, I recommend looking through the slymepit just to get a feel for how sad and lonely it is over there.

Back to the real world for part of today, and I’m a functioning adult for tomorrow, so I’ll have to leave those battles behind content in the knowledge that they’re a marginal group whose behavior is only marginalizing them further.
