Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
I don't know why it never occurs to any of them to wonder: How did the procurer of frumpy nerdbait for our ogling entertainment become the figurehead we all must die defending? I mean, that's a seriously fucked up inversion of priorities and they don't seem to care.

Really? You can cite a recent or semi-recent explicit statement of his by which that earlier one of his qualifies as misogyny? Not some semi-vague hear-say impression from all that he and others in his commentariat have said on the topics of sex, gender roles, and humour, but something explicit? And even his criticisms of the Pit for supposed misogyny looks based on something rather different from what that joke was predicated on.Rystefn wrote:By his own standards, that statement makes him a misogynist. ....Steersman wrote: <snip>
Sorry, but I think the relevant standard is the definition of “misogynyâ€, i.e., “hatred of women†– presumably simply for being women. Which I think that statement of PZ’s quite clearly fails at.
Seems to me that you’re talking of his hypocrisy, or that of his fellow-travelers, which is a rather different kettle of fish.
Seems to me that you and others are conflating his impression of the incongruity and humour of that woman’s “always†with his criticism of outright misogyny as in his recent article on Lepine.

MORE "doxxing" to commence on FTB via Ophelia's page (and more threat narrative?)?
[Remember, according to FTB, revealing publicly available business addresses i.e. Surly Amy publicly available business address is "doxxing."]
Ophelia gets a letter in the mail forwarded by Free Inquiry, sent from 'pogsurf.' They believe they know this person's name, phone number, address, wife's name, etc. Imagine if they got it wrong....hm.

COMMENTS 7 and 8 and 9 - MATT PENFOLDWiesner is appalling. I banned him some time ago; he tried to bounce back under various aliases. And then he sent me this email:
Hi PZ,
Could you please give me a call on +44 1923 23xxxx. I’d like to discuss why you have banned me from your blog.
Regards,
Martin Wiesner
I’m being nice in redacting his number. But to think after all the slimy shit he pulls there is a question about why he was banned or that I even want to talk to him about it…he’s a disingenuous git.
Doesn’t Wiesner live in the UK, in the Watford area ? If so, it might be worth contacting his local police and making a complaint.
Yeah, he does live in the Watford area. The number PZ posted has the Watford dialling code. Watford is covered by the Hertfordshire Constabulary
http://www.herts.police.uk/
COMMENT 11 - OOLONI can let you have his address if you like. It is a matter of public record.
Martin, if you are going to harass people, don’t act as election agent for the Green party! It means your address is public!
COMMENT 13 - MATT PENFOLD@Matt, he puts his postcode on his website, does it match? At least he is not doing this anonymously and complaints can be made to his local police force.
COMMENT 18 - PIERCE R. BUTLERYeah, it matches. I can yell you his wife’s name if you like as well.
COMMENT 22 - HYPERDEATH“PZ Myers & Matt Penfold doxxed Martin Wiesner!†in 5-4-3-2…
COMMENT 25 - PZ MYERSHis local newspaper currently has the lead headline “New nightclub in town centre granted licenceâ€. Perhaps the editor would appreciate something more interesting.
COMMENT 28 - MATT PENFOLDIf you want the rest of his phone number, just email me. Call at a reasonable hour in case he gave me a fake number.
COMMENT 30 - OPHELIA BENSONThe partial telephone number posted by PZ matches up with the one I got from the BT website.
COMMENT 32 - SORBUSHe included his address and a phone number on the letter.
But also, on Facebook a new friend (on the Vancouver Skeptics in the Pub page) posted a link to a post where Wiesner says he’s sending this piece of crap to a whole slew of people, including most of the speakers at the Dublin conference.
http://pogsurf.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/c ... ource.html
So at least I feel less singled out.
No, I’m sure my friends at Free Inquiry would not be happy about that (but they asked early on about forwarding mail and I said by all means).
COMMENT 33 - CARLIEA very open troll indeed, to match the ‘open letters’ posted online I guess. He’s not ex-directory and mobile numbers (probably Green Party ones) are listed in press releases. If I called him ‘a pain in the arse’ does that mean I support misuse of porcupines too?
Wow. Physical letters. Holy fucking shit. Definitely something for his local police to know about, if nothing else just so it’s on record that someone complained. And I hope there’s some sort of “restraining order†that the Dublin organizers can put in place for you (not for arrest, but if he gets within so close he will be kicked out of the conference).

Read this, which is Marcotte's open letter to CFI:

Now answer: does anyone think that Marcotte may not be a member of CFI, even though they ask her to speak? Does anyone think it's somewhat creepy to repeatedly speak at conferences put on by CFI, but to never join? Or think it's creepy to have never been a member, speak at conferences, and then demand that the CEO be fired?
And now in her most recent post, she is encouraging the call to boycott of CFI.
I am going to assume (because that's what I read between the lines of her open letter) that she is not a member. If so, what is the best adjective to describe Marcotte's behavior?
(Note: she very well might be a member, but I'd bet beer she is not.)
An outsider demands a firing, and then calls for a boycott. This is what feminists mean when they "reclaimed" "listen to us" to "shut up and do what we say".

I imagine that "all hell broke loose" is putting it mildly. I am also impressed that eventually your family accepted your wife. It speaks well of them.H. Anyway, we just eloped and got married in a Colorado courthouse, with ourselves as witnesses (Colorado is perhaps the only state that does not need ministers or witnesses). It took about 15 minutes and afterwards we headed to work. Not very romantic, one might say. Eventually, things worked out just fine and my family accepted my wife, and love her and respect her a lot. We hope to live happily ever after.
Congratulations.

Not at all. Would only be the case if you’re insisting on some false dichotomy: either right or wrong by that standard. Which doesn’t hold any water if there is no evidence of him holding that standard as it leaves open the possibility that he doesn’t subscribe to that standard.Rystefn wrote:So... unless I can find an instance of him calling that exact joke misogyny, my argument is invalid? Seems to me that you and others are conflating his impression of the incongruity and humour of that woman’s “always†with his criticism of outright misogyny as in his recent article on Lepine.
All I’m saying is that absent some evidence to justify your contention there is no evidence to justify your contention. It might be true and it might be false, but until you provide some evidence to justify it I’m at liberty to conclude that you haven’t made your case.
And absent that evidence of his standard in that particular case, one is justified, I think, in using the “reasonable standards†and charitable interpretation by which, in that case at least, he is not guilty of misogyny.

Assuming that the person did this to a large number of people, it does seem creepy. I think the police would probably consider it a waste of time, but if they report him, they probably have no choice but to investigate. I'd wager that nothing happens, except police time and effort. Kinda like the fake shit "psychics" pull. I don't see anything threatening in the letter itself, but the effort taken to actually do that means it means a lot to this individual. Not a good thing to do in any case, but the baboons efforts to publicize the information to anyone, instead of actually just keeping it to themselves (hmm, isn't that what happened to PZ with Mazurke? - He kept it private and just reported it to the police?) - that smacks as political posturing, and some pseudo-chest banging about how powerful they are - they can have this guy harassed by his (tiny) horde, just like he was harassing these other people (note, not sure if this counts as harassment, I'd just shitcan it and ignore it, but that's me).Kareem wrote:I'd take their side on this one if they didn't go straight to Dox mode.Aneris wrote:Agreed. I happily denounce that too. Even though I don't see a reason why I had to. It gives the impression that I otherwise agree to such things ‒ which simply isn't the case. Not that it mattered in the past to them. :roll:ReneeHendricks wrote:Yeah. This is kinda stalkery and creepy: http://www.freezepage.com/1371510703EHSJRBPKRG

Neither side of this letter is going to come out smelling of roses.

It pains me to do this, but I am withdrawing my support from the CFI national organization, and am cutting ties with all events, projects, and publications connected with it.
This includes the following:
* I am withdrawing as a speaker from the CFI Summit in Tacoma in October.
* I am resigning my position as columnist for Free Inquiry magazine.
* I am declining the honorarium I earned for my recent speaking engagement at CFI headquarters in Amherst, NY. Please re-direct this payment to the Secular Student Alliance. If that is not possible, please go ahead and send it to me, and I will donate it to the SSA.
* My wife and I are cancelling our subscription to Skeptical Inquirer magazine. This last one makes me extremely sad: Skeptical Inquirer played an enormous role in my process of becoming a non-believer, and it was the first publication to publish my godless writing. But I am no longer willing to be connected with your organization.
I will continue to support local CFI groups, as they are largely independent of the national organization. ...

At least she's standing up for what she says. I wonder if PZ and Ophelia will not write for Free Inquiry anymore (assuming they still do that, I haven't read or purchased any for a while, but I remember when PZ proudly proclaimed that he had a column in the mag).Skep tickle wrote:Trying to catch up. PZ links to Christina; his whole blogpost reads

I imagine the lesson is just because you hang around here, there is no guarantee you will not at some point be be mercilessly mocked and/or photo-shopped. Ask Justin Vacula how much ridicule he has been subjected to in the Slymepit by his alleged allies.
The bottom line is that this place is not for the thin skinned. If you have delicate fee fees at some point they are going to get hurt.

Why are you doing this? By "this" I mean caving to the opponent's "guilty by association until proven/professed innocent" narrative. What do Wiesner's actions have to do with you? At all? It's a letter. Paper instead of the usual LCD. A pretty lame thing to do a letter-writing campaign about IMO, but it's not like it contains threats or suspicious powders or something. I'd personally rather get something like this in the mail than all the coupons and advertising junk showing up day after day.
Tweeted back and forth with a few of you about this, honestly still do not understand why jimmies are so rustled. It could be that I'm just missing some pieces of the puzzle here. I'm open to correction.

Here's a hint for you Greta. Even if they send you a standard-issue "We deeply regret..." email, they don't care on fucking bit about your rage-tear-filled flounce. If they did, they would have supported your thugs and crucified Ron Lindsay in the first place, now wouldn't they?
