The 'don't rape' thing is obviously right prima facie (seriously - don't rape!) but just seems like such an impotent method to stop it. When we think about reducing any crime, we think of an effective strategy for doing so.

Why bother with gun control when we could just say 'don't murder'? Well, because some people (myself included) think that restricting access to dangerous killing devices would go at least some way to reducing gun-related crime.

Why give advice on how to secure your house and belongings? Why not just say 'don't steal'? Well, because we want to ensure that as few people as possible are victims of the crime, and have been adequately advised how to protect themselves from theft in advance. That doesn't mean they are morally culpable if they get burgled, just that they could have prevented it with better security.

So I see the 'don't rape' thing in the same way. Yes - don't murder, don't rape, and don't steal. But lets figure out a way to actually reduce those crimes, rather than merely imploring the prospective criminals to not to carry out the deed.

P.S. Maybe saying 'don't rape' does in fact help reduce rape. I'm pretty skeptical of that, but if that's the best way, then let's go with it.

Secondly, France has got a really bad reputation here in the US. My first sort of real introduction was when France didn't allow US aircraft to fly over French airspace when the US wanted to bomb Libya. Anyway, back in the days when I used to care about internet drama I'd like to remind people about a person named Lafayette and how he's like one of the US greatest heroes. IIRC not too long ago Lafayette was posthumously named a US citizen...I believe the only person to have this done. Also, I'd point out that if you go by population and persons killed in WW2 ratio, France was the most devastated country. Personally I have no, I repeat; no sympathy or empathy with these crybabies over at A+theism. Everyone has issues. Those of us who are adults deal with those issues like adults; i.e. not by trying to ruin the good name of atheism on an online discussion forum. I might have some inkling to understand their attempts to find a "safe space" online where they could have their little circle-jerk in peace back in September. But they do not keep to jacking each other off. They are actively trying to re-paint the idea of atheism into something it is not; i.e. a movement in favour of radical feminism, socialism and a total deconstruction of Western society as we know it. They are trying to hijack sceptic- and atheist conferences (and to a large degree succeeding) and they are doxxing people left and right.

Yeah, a lot of rape is that sort of thing, where a little education goes a long way. I'd actually change it to having sex with an incapacitated person is rape, you don't lose anything by making it gender neutral. But still, it does seem to be effective. At the very least it's reasonable that it would be effective, where simple messages saying to "don't rape" are not reasonable IMO.

That's really the problem with the concept of rape culture. It assumes that people actually approve of rape...very few people do. The real problem with rape is that a good portion of it lives in this murky grey area. Having sex with someone who is unconscious is obviously rape. But what if someone is just really drunk? At what level does it become rape? When they're slurring their words? Physical motions? Where?

And unfortunately an AWFUL lot of this stuff involves alcohol, obviously.

A real discussion on this subject really would help things, I think, but it wouldn't be good for people who wanted to demonize others. So this discussion is basically shut down wherever it starts.

I was a bit annoyed at the NS a while back when they ran a feature week on the men's rights movement, and did all of the standard things that MRAs etc. complain about (WHAT ABOUT TEH MENZ? i'm not really up on the justin beiber insults either. I don't think they should happen. They happen because justin bieber is loved by young women and girls, and an attack on bieber is an attack on them with him as the weapon. attacking justin bieber tells girls that what they like is garbage, and that they have no opinions on art and entertainment that matter to real people. I suspected. Sometimes it hits me just how bizarre we are to the rest of the world. I convinced my husband we could get away with saying we were Canadian when we travelled around Europe for two weeks in 2010. I think it helped that we both have some foreign language skills. No one expects that from the 'Mericans.

Fuckk that. Have you been here? We are seriously having rallies about "keeping our guns" after twenty children were shot dead. Since that mass shooting, hundreds more have died, including a larger number of children than died on said mass shootings. And we're holding rallies. And at three of those rallies, there were five accidental shootings in one day. I could go into the federal government not finding fraud within the banks that tanked the economy, our 46% rate of people who believe the earth is 6k years old or the mass imprisonment of the mentally ill, homeless and minorities, but I just don't have the effort. There's not much to be proud of.
