I'm presently getting this when trying to have a gander at the A+ forum:

To me, that looks like she's trying to tell herself she still loves a man who no longer does it for her.
You think that's why she's so hot for me?
Just imagine the kind of fanfic she is writing about you write now. If you need some help, talk with Eculidork

Or we have.

Depending on who you listen to.
She was always pretty non-confrontational and not a good fit for the baboon squad. She has already been declared a non person by many of the Horde for not conforming to the Received Wisdom.

Apologies if this came thru twice.
I hope this isn't you lot who have scared her off. Collateral damage in giving PZ Myers and Rebecca Watson the criticism they deserve is not OK.

I highly doubt it is anything directly to do with us.
She has never even been mentioned on the Slymepit, as far as I can recall or if she has, she was never considered part of the ingroup. The slymepit long ago called their opponents the FC6 (PZ, Ophelia, Greta, Watson, Svan and Laden - which dropped to the FC5 after Laden was expelled from FTB.) Our arguments with FTB have always been against specific individuals. Some FTBers like Mano Singham and Maryam Namazie, have never been criticised and only spoken of in praise. Others, like Karen, were neutrals in the fight and so were never in our sights.
The Slymepit should club together to get her a fruit basket.

2013: The year of the offensively nice Slymepit.
I'd love to give every internet SJW a nice fruit basket for all their self-aggrandizing "efforts" at cleaning up the world, but thanks to the idiot SJW's of the last generation, I would likely be thrown in prison, raped repeatedly, and put on a list for life.

Jack Rayner wrote:So...before even bothering with Dillacunty's argument, I feel the need to point something out: Is *anyone* making the argument that DoorMatt is attempting to refute? I think people should forget all about any stupid analogies comparing Youtube or blog comments to living rooms or whateverthefuck, and pay attention to the claims that he is supposedly refuting. If someone claimed that being banned/blocked from a forum/video channel/blog is violating their free speech, I would disagree, and not give much of a fuck at all. But from my knowledge, this isn't what's being said, and those of you following the carrot he's waving in front of you are giving the strawman he's made credence by trying to defend it. STOP IT.

Pointing out that the baboons are acting just like your typical creationist with their heavy censorship of dissenting speech in their own spaces [blogs, youtube channels, forums] is not the same as saying that they are infringing on others' speech, and DoorMatt totally fails when he conflates the critique against the censorship of dissent with the critique on the following:

- The baboons trying to blacklist individuals from speaking at conferences.
- Sulky Amy's abuse of DMCA. [And request that "fake" jewelry be banned from conferences.]
- Melodramatic Melody launching false flagging campaigns.

Disallowing dissent in your own turf? Whatever. It's your right, but it makes you look like a cowardly, dishonest cunt and not much of a "freethinker". Trying to silence others from speaking everywhere else? An infringement of rights.

So instead of bothering with DoorMatt's arguments, y'all need to stop and question the whole premise. Ask him instead why he is conflating similar but different criticisms, creating a strawman out of his own conflation, and then having a furious slap fight with that strawman...

Any thoughts on that?
Absolutely. This is why the baboons came up with the Freeze Peach thing. It's an old tactic of PZ's and ties into the ludicrous concept of the dungeon. He likes to present dissenters as ranty lunatics demanding a voice in his 'home' and the dungeon is a symbolic way of saying that you are barred from rational company, i.e. his blog.

It looks like the Tina Fey thing isn't being dropped.
A petition has been started to get her to apologize!

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/peti ... logize-to/

[spoiler]
Ms Fey,
You may not be aware, but there is an undercurrent of feminism in the secular, atheist, gaming, geek and science communities. It is gaining in strength and voice, and recently, you have gotten our attention. You are a welcome voice among a cacophony of belligerence and sexism.
We would love to throw our full support behind you…. but…
You do things like make slut shaming jokes about people’s mothers. If you aren’t familiar with the term “slut shaming”, please google it, there is plenty of information about it and how it contributes to the patriarchy. “We” (you and us) should not be in the business of perpetuating stereotypes that denigrate women. Making jokes about mothers who are sluts does exactly that.
More than that, you described your use of the insult “cunt”, as “an accurate assessment of my doctor's personality”. You do not seem to realize that to use a word that biologist PZ Myers has described as “the most odious of anatomical features” is tantamount to throwing in your lot with the gender traitors and PIV apologists. As Free Thought Blogger, Ophelia Benson, has said: “I can say that without using sexist epithets. I don't know why you pricks can't manage that.”
Tina, you are a brilliant and vibrant voice who gets it, just please think about it a little bit more?
We ask you to formally make a sincere and contrite apology to the feminist community, and to make amends for your mistake by showing a willingness to learn from your errors by signing on to the atheismplus education forum where you will learn which subjects must never be the subject of humor or mockery and which insults are appropriate for which circumstance (quick tip: if in doubt just use douchebag!)
In addition we ask that, in future, you refrain from making jokes about controversial topics, such as those involving gender or sexuality, without the prior consultation of those with an expertise in correct feminism. We suggest an ideal assisting committee consisting of PZ Myers, Ophelia Benson, Rebecca Watson, Stephanie Zvan and Greg Laden.
We ask, Tina, that you respond to our petition in the knowledge that your promise to improve your humor will encourage up-and-coming female comedians to likewise “get it”.
Remember, we won’t hate her, if she’s not a gender traitor!
How do you sign these things?[/spoiler]

I clicked on that link and discovered that there is actually one near me in the UK. Sounds like a good idea and I figured I could donate some suits, shirts and shoes etc. Until I read this:
The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
Would it really be so hard, if you have the ability and resources to run a facility like this, to cater for both sexes?

That's what makes it sooo good.

The A+ forums really takes one of the top spots of 2012 most funniest things, it's like a wonderful mix of "Woody and tinny words", "the fish dance", "I'm a lumberjack" (including the murderous barber part), "Ministry of Silly walks", "the Spanish Inquisition", a few of those gory bloodbath sketches, and the oppression Olympics of the Four Yorkshire-men... but with REAL people!

I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5 humor stars , and the -0.5 only because since one or two of them might actually have any sort of power over other humans in real life, which is a scary thought.

Where does this unconditionally shit come from? I understand maybe you might love your children unconditionally, but your partner? If they hit you? If they cheated on you? If they left you with 2.4 kids to bring up?
Dunno, but it seems like a view consistent with feminist ideas. Anyone that complains about the gender earnings gap, for example, is a poster child for this, in my view;

"WAH! WOMEN SHOULD GET PAID EXACTLY THE SAME AS MEN!!!!! even if they're not working jobs which require as much education/experience/skill/physical exertion, and even if they're not working as many hours..."

This happens to them quite often. I think it's something screwy in their database, rather than an attack. Either that, or they're being hosted on a Commodore 64.

I think the talk was called:
"Life genetics and evolution are like a poker game"

Myers comes across as creepy when he is doing the sex jokes. I think that's why Watson got the big laughs at the beginning of her talk just after PZ, when she jokes about him trying to impregnate her. PZ's behavior in this talk makes Watsons joke sound kind of plausible.

Sincere, yes. "Brilliant" is a little OTT but I think she's a very smart person and a credit to the skeptic movement. I recommend her blog:

I spotted that she's chummy with Greg Laden and thought you were joking. I will have a look.
She might be, and I would disapprove if she was, not that my disapproval means anything, but I like that she is relentlessly skeptical about all claims and jumps on nobody's bandwagon.
She's really smart, and yes, thinks and tests all the time.

So maybe Atheism+ should be more properly renamed, since it's apparent that their focus is not Social Justice for all, but just women. And would this include minority women, or just the less privileged white women?

Looking for some ideas here, while I make some coffee and wake the hell up.

Possible. It's not unusual for me to see such public proclamations from friends on bookface hours/days before seeing their relationship status changed from "in a relationship" to "single". When I see such bullshit sounding statements I usually leave a comment that simply says "Appeasement." Only a few of my friends get it and tell me to fuck off though.

Well, he might get a tad worried if it gets to this stage:

Yeah, that's the type she seems like to me. I know both sexes can be fucked up and do shit like that, but in my experience, I've seen more women do it than men. It's not a matter of sexism even. More of a psychotic love obsession, a built up fantasy they think is reality, but only exists in their heads. Then they try to make reality fit, which it never does properly. Then, of course, chaos and hilarity ensue.

In my experience, people who can't hear don't need transcripts because they have speech-to-text. The ones that don't usually aren't whining about it, they just ignore that shit, because if you can't take the time to put it in writing, then clearly it's not important enough for them to worry about. Limited sample size, blah blah, but that's what I've seen.

So maybe Atheism+ should be more properly renamed, since it's apparent that their focus is not Social Justice for all, but just women. And would this include minority women, or just the less privileged white women?

Looking for some ideas here, while I make some coffee and wake the hell up.
The fact that two people posting in the thread (so that's what, a quarter of the respondents so far?) have either directly benefited or had a friend benefit from that charity makes me think it is a bit of a boondoggle. Probably well-intentioned, but I imagine their pool of possible clients is mostly the sort of people involved in this kind of activism because:
a) they are the ones who will have heard about the charity
and
b) they will have the confidence and connections to sign up for it.

That is my cynical perspective.

none of you have any idea what "covered in dog hair" means.

I have four big dogs here with me right now. Three are having a wrestling match. Sometimes I have up to eight over to play, and have a few before and after that.

Many in the audience said they were put-off by the reaction to blogger Rebecca Watson and feared the negative responses from trolls.
For crying out loud, why are professional scientists bothering with that tit's scare propaganda?

A good article, but saying that women scientists themselves could do more to change the situation is probably considered misogynist these days.

Today on "Blast from the Past"!
Setting the Record Straight on Ophelia Benson
By The Intersection | July 12, 2010 1:53 pm
We haven’t said anything about Ophelia Benson on this blog in a long time. We stopped allowing Benson to comment here back in mid 2009, for very good reasons–among other things, she was sending us emails demanding to have other posters’ comments deleted. We had a better solution.

Lately, Benson has been clamoring to have her commenting status restored, based on the “Tom Johnson” flap. This doesn’t make any sense, as the thread that led to her banning happened long before that affair.

Still, we decided to look at what Benson was saying in favor of her restoration:

He or he and Sheril Kirshenbaum banned me from commenting at The Intersection soon after I began trying to get them to do a better job of justifying their claims and to criticize their energetic and often inaccurate bashing of new atheists. Commenters who agreed with them were not banned or even moderated, no matter how abusive their comments were. One “bilbo” repeatedly called me a liar after I posted a list of questions for M and K.

Benson’s banning had nothing to do with her positions. Moreover, how does she know who was or wasn’t banned or moderated? We can’t tell you how heavily we have had to moderate John Kwok, for instance, and he often agrees with us–albeit usually unhelpfully. (Kwok was recently banned.)

In any case, the core of her claim for restoration seems to be something about “bilbo” attacking her here. Here are two unpublished comments that Benson left on the blog recently:

How about an apology for allowing “bilbo” (same guy as “Tom Johnson”) to call me a liar here but banning me? How about unbanning me?

And:

So “bilbo” who repeatedly said here that I was lying in my questions to you two was not moderated, but I who repeatedly asked you two to do a better job of justifying your claims – I was banned. Do you think you should have second thoughts about that now, Sheril? Now that you know “bilbo” was William? A sock puppet? Who has made something of a career of saying I’m lying when I say something he dislikes?

I think you should lift the ban on me, and I think you should apologize.

There will be no lifting of the ban. These claims are meritless.

Benson was banned in July of 2009. There was no “bilbo” on the thread that led to her banning. Look for yourself.

Indeed, we have checked our logs, and the first appearance of the “bilbo” who also turned out to be “Tom Johnson,” “Milton C,” etc, was in September of 2009. Long after Benson had been banned.

Neither did “bilbo” ever attack Benson on our blog, that we can see. We only found this one “bilbo” comment that even mentions her, when listing several people, and it is pretty harmless.

The actions of “bilbo” and Benson’s banning have nothing to do with one another, then. Except in the sense that both are now banned–and will remain so.

More generally, we may as well reiterate that nobody has a “right” to comment on our blog. If you come by and don’t behave–aren’t civil, aren’t substantive, aren’t accurate, engage in attacks, become a nuisance, etcetera–then you’re gone. It is our intention to foster a forum for reasonable, thoughtful, civil discussion of the topics that interest us. And we will take strong and immediate steps to preserve this forum.

The worst thing is, I understand the appeal of that. So is this is yet another case of "the problem with [ideology] is it sounds great in principle, but can't work in practice", "the problem with [ideology] is it was hijacked by fanatics and morons", People on the Internet (TM), or just standard human dumb-fuckery? I'm inclined towards the latter, but then again I have a pessimistic streak.

Amanda Marcotte and other feminists got really angry, accusing men of 'telling women how to act' and 'mansplaining' amongst other things. The best was 'they think we need *their* approval, just more sexism.'

When really, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. These guys were just sayin 'hey, we love you women even if you dont have 6 inches of makeup on'

Amanda Marcotte got really angry cause there is no amount of makeup -and/or hard liquor- that will do something for that hideous face.

Regarding this post

viewtopic.php?p=46909#p46909

Did Myers actually refer to something as "the most odious of anatomical features" and to what was he referring if true. I could infer, but such an inference alludes to some deeply questionable considerations about Myers relationship with femininity.

I went out with a woman who looked just like Amanda Marcotte (probably explains that weird dream I had about her). She turned out to be completely nuts. My own fault for presuming that the best way to get a date was to have no standards at all. I've, er, since had cause to revise that opinion.

Somebody asked if I could put a link to the last post in a thread at the bottom of every page.

I COULD do this, but it would involve me breaking the scoping of variables between forum and topic (thread) views, which I'm reluctant to do without digging more deeply into the code and looking at the structure.

In short, the answer is no, at least for the present. A quick way to get there is to go to the topic page, and click on the "Last Post" link in the topic header. This will always be present unless you've already read the last post, in which case, seek help.

Thanks!

It's ingrained in us to rubber-neck when we see a disaster. We've all been staring at the 5 car pile up as we drive slowly by.

Then for most of us, one of the people involved has run up to our car and punched us in the face. So we're sticking around a while longer. (Waiting for the police? This is where my metaphor falls apart.)

We need to care about these people because:

1) Some of the things they do are actively harmful.

2) They are attempting to become the single voice that speaks for the atheism movement.

Point 2) is why the banning, blocking, blacklisting etc. matters. These people are trying to control the debate and exclude dissenting voices. Look at that conference line-up from the other thread, every speaker is a true believer. That paradigm must not win.
This is a bit late because I'm in a different timezone but I agree with AbsurdWalls entirely.

I've no idea if this expression exists, so hopefully I'm going to coin it right now.

Drama bait.

They do it for the ad revenue. The more controversial a post is the more page views it gets and consequently the more $$$ they get when Ed divives up the money. That's why PZ prevents people leaving Youtube comments and instead directs them to his blog. That's why Benson, Svan and Christina write obvious flamebait. They want drama because it makes them money. When they write about normal non-drama things they get very few comments, so I imagine they also get far fewer page views and ads served.

Some examples from Ophelia's blog:

We the peeps - 4 comments

Fluttering - 10 comments

Her mistake - 13 comments

Once upon a time in Kenya - 7 comments

This is why we can't have nice shoes - 117 comments.

Great Christina's blog:

Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters - 10 comments

“Had the girl simply surrendered…” - 117 comments

Greta Speaking in San Francisco Sun. 1/13 - 1 comment

The Absurd Manufactured Shoe Controversy: A Brief Response - 179 comments

6 Outrageous Incidents of Discrimination Against Nonbelievers - 6 comments

And so it goes on. Meanwhile, someone utterly uncontroversial, like AronRa, typically only gets around 5-25 comments on average. I doubt very much he's in it for the money.

codelette at http://www.slymepit.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... 074#p47074 , that is fascinating. Benson complaining about exactly and precisely the kind of behaviour she regularly enacts on her blog, and she being guilty of exactly and precisely the kind of bad behaviour that got her banned, the exact behaviour she uses as an excuse to ban folks from her blog.

The hypocrisy on this one is beyond blatant.

Thanks for that.

Richard Dworkins (love the name - woe, shades of HMMS Andrea) asked:

Yes, he did. He was referring to teh Bad Guys use of teh Bad Werd "cunt". But he was trying to be reflectively ironic, or something like that, in that his statement was an attempt at expressing that it was the intent of the users of the bad word cunt that in using the word cunt the Bad Guys intended to imply that all cunts were odious, simply through the use of the word. It was not his intention to imply that he thought cunts were odious. It was simply yet another example of his really poor writing skills.

I guess I'll have to go look, but out of the 179 comments on the shoe controversy, how many different people? One of the things I noticed on PZ's comment section was there were on average, 20-30 regular commenters and one reason the comment thread became so huge was if there was a "troll" commenting as well who eventually was banned.
