AtheismPlussers discuss which TV shows make them want to puke because of ableism/racism/patriarchy/anti-zombieism/etc.

http://atheismplus.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4633

It starts out with
The Walking Dead

First and second seasons were chock full of gender essentialism
and soon descends into the usual AtheismPlus insanity such as someone being threatened with a permaban because they like Family Guy.

Some of the discussion there reminds me of Laurie Penny's brilliant assessment of Game of Thrones:
...
As well as being mightily entertaining, Game of Thrones is racist rape-culture Disneyland with Dragons. To say that this series is problematic in its handling of race and gender is a little like saying that Mitt Romney is rich: technically accurate, but an understatement so profound that it obscures more than it reveals.
...
A story doesn’t need to be comfortable, realistic or generous towards the downtrodden in order to be gripping; and a piece of art doesn't have to be perfectly politically correct to be fun, or important. We're allowed to enjoy problematic things, as long as we're honest about their problems. It would be nice, though, if those of us who enjoy this series despite its many, many prostitutes problems could just stop making asinine excuses for it. The worst by far of those excuses is “Game of Thrones is based on the Medieval World, and the Medieval World Was Sexist and Racist.” Well, yes, 14th century Europe wasn’t a lot of fun if you were a woman, but nor did it have, for example, dragons, or magical shape-changing witchy-woo assassins. Westeros does, because Westeros is a fantasy world. If the creator of a fantasy series can dream up an army of self-resurrecting zombie immortals he can damn well dream up equal marriage rights, and if he chooses not to do so then that choice is meaningful, as is our assumption that the default setting for any generically legendary epic must involve really rather a lot of rape.

I'm having difficulty parsing this argument.
Who the hell denies that there are some people (thankfully not many) who would do this sort of thing?
And who would say that the type of person who would do this sort of thing to women doenst deserve the title misogynist.
From my point of view the argument is not that misogynists like this exist, but that the word 'misogynist' is being misused by applying it to absolutely anyone who disagrees in the slightest with Peezus and his apostles.

And what's with the ableist othering line?
Is it ableist othering to suggest that this is an example of a person (or all three brothers arrested) who is a sociopath?
We are supposed to ignore the pathological aspect to this and just assume its a sexist man who thinks its OK to use women as sex toys?
And all because of the patriarchy?

If he wants to play this game of guilt by gender then I could refer him to some forums featuring ex partners of borderline personality disordered women. There are a significant number of malicious women out there deranged enough to bury an axe in your head over a minor slight. This is not an attack on women, to be clear (nor on all BPD sufferers), just a reminder that broken-headedness is not exclusive to men.

Will these fucks ever tire of this game of disingenuousness and equivocation?

I laughed my ass off reading through that odious pile of hypersensitive dog shit. If I was inclined to do so, I could don my trusty "atheism plus tru-vision sunglasses(tm)" and watch any tv show, literally any tv show, and find something to whine and bitch about.

A+ is like a warped version of the movie "They Live" but instead of aliens, their sunglasses allow them to see rape culture, patriarchy, able-ism, misogyny and all manner of fee-hurting nastiness wherever they look.

What Karla Porter did was stupid, not because it would have resulted in harrassment of the attendees (I guess Shirley Phelps gets tons of these types of requests for her family to picket this or that event so they will have to avoid all but the ones most likely to generate publicity - and that's not going to be Melody's event) but because it gives the FTB crowd another stupid thing to whine about.

"Woe is us, Karla's sicc-ed a hate group on us" they wail, conveniently forgetting that they themselves ever so bravely released the real life name of Thunderf00t after he was expelled - someone whose life was threatened by real hate groups, not the piddling clowns of the WBC.
It's stupid on every level for multiple reasons. Too numerous and obvious to actually list.

As for TF00t. The FTB'ers did childishly and pointedly over-use his name once they'd decided he was enemy number 1, but they didn't "release" it.

Probably zero, somebody else apparently alerted her to it.
Of course. Ophie actually doing some work herself? What the hell was I thinking?

Pz is obviously rattled about the amount of damage he is taking.

A protest forum with this many users says something to onlookers.

The more he mentions it even slandering it the more people come here.

When they watch shows like Game of Thrones, do they actually think that the show itself is saying "rape is good"? Do they think the writers intend the audience to react favorably to every character? They really need to spend more time at tvtropes:

The thing I try to remember is that in 2008, around 47% of US voters wanted to put Sarah Palin one (fairly dodgy) heartbeat away from the Presidency.
That was the point where I really started to come around to the "intelligence is an evolutionary cul de sac" argument.

Like all extremists groups they water down concepts such as Misogyny and Patriarchy so the words become meaningless. That also means they have an amazing capacity to completely ignore or miss the times when such words are appropriate and useful. They pick on the wrong people.

Finally, they have such a feeling of righteousness and intellectual superiority they are make themselves immune from self criticism and examination.

I feel they do a lot of damage to equality and human rights the same as WBC do a lot of damage to Christianity. That is why I oppose them.
I agree in general, but I think it's a bit unfair to compare Rad Fems and SJWs to WBC though, or at least SJWs (depending on your definition of RadFems).
WBC is extremists that have little influence over anything but their own little sect, and they are in general pretty much hated and seen as loons by even almost all Christians. Their feminist counterpart would be the feminist separatists and extremists who are pondering gender revolution, extermination of all men, etc, who by most feminists are seen as bat-shit insane (if they even are aware of their existence).

Your average SJW/radfem aren't extremists though, they aren't despised and loathed by the feminist movement or seen as crazy nutjobs. Rather the opposite, the feminists who have power and influence, who have deep connections in politics, have money and resources, and get media space, are often of the radfem/sjw type. The radfem/SJW christian counterpart would rather be something like the religious right in the US. Unlike the extremist, they both have real political influence, and they have actual resources in the form of both money and a noticeable amount of organized activists willing to put in work and time for "the cause".

I'm sorry, Phil, he might be a good father and a good friend, but: he's a twat.

I don't know what possessed Karla to tweet Phelps, but it was most likely with humour intended. Besides, if we're going to judge the depths of trolling, I think with PZ with his Marc Lepine quip, or doubtthat's most recent comparing Justin Vacula to a serial killer, to be much, much worse. Also considering that Louis has posted here and knows full well how we are, not to mention knowing full well you post here, it's more than a little disingenuous to snarkily imply we're okay with it, humour or no. But let's face it, it's the bloody Westboro Baptist Church. The screaming redhead woman from Toronto is more imposing.

I mean, what happened to taking things in stride? Is it really that horrible? Maybe she was drunk? If they do happen to show up to the event, will anyone really care? The hysteria witnessed by Louis (the lackwit father) and "Katherine Lorraine" is just so hilariously displaced and ridiculous, it's like it was the end of the world. Get. a fucking. grip.

Actually I'm pretty sure that Lala Ward was conservatively dressed for the most part. She was also married for a time to Tom Baker, the actor who played the Doctor during her run.

How can A+rseholes like Richard Carrier and Matt Dillahunty spout shite about wanting to be more inclusive whilst labeling themselves"A+" ? They seem to think they can just ignore the fucking OFFICIAL FORUM set up by the founder of atheism plus whilst the forum actually goes out of it's way to be as aggressive, jargon-bound and insular as possible.

They haven't completed one since October, but they were supposed to be providing transcriptions of atheist videos.
I remember the fanfare on Greta Christina's blog when they suited up, mounted their white chargers and bravely declared they were going to ride forth and transcribe the living shit out of some atheist videos....Until somebody reminded them of copyright laws and how distributing transcripts without permission may be illegal.
Then they decided it would be much easier to collectively tear that person to shreds instead and Lolz were had by all.

What I like about Greenwood's comment is that he attacks a group of people for regressing into a buzzword, then does it himself. He criticises 'paranoid asshats' for attacking people with the charge of misandry in order to deflect the issue, then deflects the possibility of the Columbus men being mentally disturbed with "ERMAHGERD! ABLEISM!" to stop his charge of 'the Patriarchy at work!' being called into question. I don't have much experience of FTB, but I imagine this is nothing new.
You have a good imagination.

And all because of the patriarchy?

Why, yes, of course. You mean you didn't? :naughty:

Get. a fucking. grip.
Meh! Louis is his own man. I've tried introducing him to the Pit, he didn't like it. Fine. I haven't read what he said at Pharyngula, I don't visit there at all anymore. It's not that important anyway, is it?

Can somebody not banned at A+ *snigger* please post this over there?:
The program I most have a problem with is Mickey Mouse. Why is the only white character a clumsy, incomprehensible duck? Racist much? Mickey, Minnie, Pete and Goofy are all black and Pluto is heavily tanned.
It's this kind of abject racism and pandering to the black community that make me not want to watch children's cartoons anymore but I will anyway because otherwise I'd have nothing to bitch about.

Seth. Seth Macfarlane. Scott Macfarlane is a comic book artist last I checked. Made Spawn.
Actually no, old chum. It's Todd Macfarlane who created Spawn. Now go back to your American football and 'workouts', and stop trying to pass yourself off as a nerd.

I am always triggered anytime I see the UK childrens TV show called rainbow, the reasons why as are as follows,

1: Jeoffrey the main host is a white normative male
2: Zippy always struck me as being sexually aggressive
3: George the only homosexual on the show, coloured a bright pink which is an obvious and weak attempt at trying to show this
4: Rod, Jane and Freddy, all white
5: Bungle, who is a bear, "bear" is a gay term for a very hairy heavy set homosexual man "Bungle" is British slang for a mistake and clearly this again shows contempt towards homosexuality in that it is trying to portray homosexuality as being a mistake.

On top of all the above, the whole show is angled towards homosexuality being kept in a room, clearly none of them explore the outside world and always find activities to do within the home, I find this highly suggestive of the producers trying to subliminally tell children that if you are homosexual, then you must hide away from the world and never come out.

The baboons are overreacting, as usual (one even brings up Anne Frank). They are funny when they are overreacting. The pretentiously pseudonym'd Katherine Lorraine, Tortue du Désert avec un Coupe-Boulon writes:
THANKS Karla. Thanks so very fucking much.

I was going to go to WiS2 in a skirt and with my falsies cause it was a fucking safe place. I would be surrounded by people who would beat the shit out of people who would say any wrong words.
Now that the WBC has the scent, I can’t do that anymore. WiS2 is no longer a safe place for a trans-woman like myself.

Thanks for your “joke.”
To which irisvanderpluym responds:
Cross-posted from Ophelia’s thread:
WIS Attendees: let’s moon them. Who’s with me?
Katherine Lorraine, Tortue du Désert avec un Coupe-Boulon – I’m so sorry. I just want to say I will be there and I will have your back.
So now I’m having this mental image of Katherine Lorraine, Tortue du Désert avec un Coupe-Boulon wearing her falsies and mooning the WBC folks while irisvanderpluym is having her back.

It could be worse, I suppose. It could be PZ doing the mooning. Even the WBC loons don't deserve that.

By the way, what are we to think of this statement by Katherine Lorraine, Tortue du Désert avec un Coupe-Boulon: “I would be surrounded by people who would beat the shit out of people who would say any wrong words.”

Is this another case of “X is wrong, except when we do it”?

Seems better off asking what shows are NOT problematic. I'm hard pressed to find one.
Yes, when you can find racism on a slice of toast and misogyny in a rain cloud I suppose it's very hard to find a TV show which doesn't have you BAAAAWing your eyes out. Maybe switch the fucking telly off if you don't like it? Just a thought you moronic cunt.

I thought Hannibal was pretty good. The lead character is a pretentious wank with "social issues" who is "on the spectrum" but the guy playing Hannibal Lecter is show stealingly good.

I'm going to go against the flow and stick up or Karla re. the WBC thing.

Let's face facts here: the WBC are the closest thing to a "Comedy Hate Group" in North America. They're the equivalent of Mary Whitehouse. They're a good fit to Peezus and A+Theism. Being able to wind them all up at the same time is a good thing (tm). So nice one Karla.

I'm with Git on this one.
At first glance I thought it was reasonably funny, and that was before we all got to picture Fred Phelps being mooned by a trans-woman.

Also, if it keeps the bastards away from soldiers' funerals I'm all for it.
Maybe Ophie Benson can bore some of the pricks to death.

Since the culprit was neither a designated out-group foe nor a designated in-group friend, commenters were free to voice their own opinions on whether it was a wise move.
