Does it? I've never been to Japan, so I wouldn't know. I've been friends/collaborators with a number of Japanese scientists, and I follow some aspects of Japanese culture (cooking, crafts, manga), but that's just dabbling. I don't think they make women wear burqas or stone them to death for talking to men who aren't relatives or spouses. "Criminally" implies "deserving of punishment," and I would want to experience the culture for myself before making such a sweeping judgment. But that's just me. ::shrugs::
Imagine replacing "Japan" in that tweet with another country ... say a Middle Eastern, Islamic country. Oh, the outrage! Islamophobia!

Yes, I tend to agree; would have been more than a little odd if he’d said the same about some male official. Okay. I'd missed those (or forgotten them). So Obama comments in a positive nonspecific way on people's looks as a light touch, friendly and/or mildly humorous and/or upbeat. Maybe something like Bush giving nicknames to people (though those were usually less public, I think)....just to be completely fair, President Obama often introduces high ranking male officials by commenting on their looks, too. Last February, he introduced HUD secretary Shaun Donovan as "the good-looking guy in the front here." A month later he pointed out that Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar is "a good-looking guy." And earlier this year he called Ray Mabus an "outstanding Secretary of the Navy," adding, "There he is right there — the good-looking guy over at the end."

Silly. Reading the rules without your sex-positive feminist glasses on. You're supposed to know that PC sex talk is just fine. :naughty:Sex in cyberspace; porn, okcupid and the internet.

How has this changed the way we hook up, the way we present ourselves, and how we relate to other potential partners? And what about porn - how can we be ethical consumers? Oh yeah, of course. I think it was a bit of a gaffe, and not totally appropriate- but misogynist? That's hard to take seriously.Obama was apparently trying to be good, in praising Harris in ways relevant to her performance as an attorney general, but IMO he was indeed tone deaf, in commenting on her looks and also in that awkwardly self-aware opening "you have to be careful to, first of all, say she is...". As for "chiding", I'd say it could be construed as somewhat gendered, but a different sense- it's more often used to describe a condescending man lecturing a woman. "Mansplaining", in SJW-speak.

Cephalopods, Crime
by PZ Myers
Some horrible little man murdered his girlfriend by stuffing a live octopus down her throat, and then claiming it was an accidental death by choking while eating a traditional Korean meal. It’s tragic and terrible, but I notice that no one is mentioning the other victim: the poor cephalopod murdered by mastication.
Hey, Korea: your practice of eating living octopus is cruel!
Funny. You’re just a couple of inches away from a Slymepit worthy joke that the octopus is the real victim.
That’s no better than MRA’s whining about their weenies on a thread about FGM.
and
PZ, you truly are a wanker.

That would seem only to make him consistent – consistently wrong. Why should the degree of physical attractiveness – one’s “sex appeal†– have any bearing on how good a job they’re likely to be doing? Maybe if he was using other physical attributes – short, fat, ugly, crippled, etc. – to describe other officials then one might be able to defend against a charge of discrimination. Otherwise?Skep tickle wrote:From the first comment:Pitchguest wrote:http://gawker.com/5993807/?post=58763596

I find it interesting that she decided to go with the prosthetic leg over the wheelchair. IIRC she spent most (if not all) of Skepticon in a wheelchair to promote awareness. It was a bit 'coincidental' that she got all that practice in right before an injury and surgery that could result in her needing one.codelette wrote:That girl with the amputation fetish posted this at Eberhard's blog...If you the videos on her Youtube channel, you'll notice that's she's enjoying that shit way too much. When I look down at my leg, I won’t see a piss-poor excuse for an organic part, a reminder of how damaged and broken I am – I’ll see the beauty of carbon fiber and titanium, and a reminder that this community came together when I really needed help.
Since this is my first post I suppose I should add a small introduction. I'm yet another Chill Girl/Sister Punisher, the only conference I've been to is Skepticon. I've always been a bit nervous to say anything, even though I've been following since the beginning, due to the crazed lashback that could bite my ass once a year when Skepticon rolls through town.

I wouldn't worry. None of them will say shot to anyone in person. They'd just yell at you on the Internet.

http://richardcarrier.blogspot.co.uk/20 ... usion.htmlTwo of The Christian Delusion's fifteen chapters are mine. The first is Why the Resurrection Is Unbelievable, which is the most definitive refutation of warranted belief in the resurrection I have ever composed. It's a deliberate tour de force, such that I doubt I'll ever have to write another. It even takes down recent attempts to use Bayes' Theorem to argue for the resurrection, and it contextualizes everything so there just isn't any rational basis left for claiming the resurrection is historically proven.
The second is Christianity Was Not Responsible for Modern Science, which is another tour de force, conclusively taking down once and for all the claim that Christianity gave us modern science.
Once again, a pre-emptive assertion that one couldn't genuiely have issues with anything that's been graced, Midas-like, with Carrier's intellectual pecker; any negativity would of course be the result of some ulterior motive. It's a fantastic book...And if you like it, give it a customer review on Amazon, critical or laudatory. We'll need honest Amazon reviews to counter the inevitable Christian tactic of low-starring it and lying about it to dissuade fellow Christians from reading it. I'd rather have valid criticisms in there if any.
Hath a high opinion of himself, does Dr Carrier.

“Pride goeth before a fallâ€, and all that, although he probably threw his Bible out before he got to the good stuff ….
But I very much doubt that many are claiming the “Christianity gave us modern scienceâ€, although more than a few credible books – e.g., Richard Tarnas’ The Passion of the Western Mind: Understanding the Ideas That Have Shaped Our World View – have argued quite persuasively that Christianity, as with Islam, have made significant contributions to at least the dissemination of those ideas or their precursors.

Im sure by now we all have been accused of rape and celebrating the inquisition. I was just wondering since we have copies of PZ's post with him giving targets such as Joe Rogan who also has documented online activity showing innocence. Is it enough proof of malicious harassment or at least defamation of character? Not to sue but im sure even a filed complaint would be enough to remove his white, middle class, gender denying "privilege". At least cause some concern for his representation at events.
This is my first post also. So how does it go again?...
Oh yeah.
Hello. My name is socialcuntism. (pause for response) ...
and im a white middle class misogynistic rapist who forgets to check his privilege.

Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
It's refreshing to hear someone say that. This imperialist nonsense is simply an excuse for narcissists to keep the focus on themselves. A+ use that excuse all the time. They also seem to forget they can't 'listen' to people who have no access to a computer and more often than not little to no education. What are they supposed to do, ask a woman if she wants to be stoned or not by flying over and asking?Jan Steen wrote:For a change, Ophelia Benson comes across as a perfectly reasonable individual.
Indeed, human rights are universal. Isn’t it paradoxical that the SJ warriors are often among the first to forget this? They often get so hopelessly lost in the intricacies of their privilege calculus that they end up defending oppressors rather than the oppressed.Still arguing about Amina and the protests and white-imperialist-Orientalist feminism. On Twitter for one.
Sigh. “White western feminism†as opposed to the brown eastern kind which is just fine with arresting and whipping or stoning a woman who takes a picture of herself with her shirt off.this is where an intersectional approach is so vital. Attempting to impose white western “feminism†w/o listening to the very ppl they’re trying to “liberate†= doomed & counterproductive enterprise.
Don’t do that. Don’t pretend there’s “white western†feminism or human rights or liberalism as opposed to brown eastern ones. Human rights are universal; that is the whole point. The whole point is to make them exceptionless, because if we don’t we’re right back where we started – with “we have to kill all the Jews/Tutsis/Bosnian Muslims/gays/apostates/Hindus/whatever it is this weeks.â€

Her blog is pure comedy gold as well. I was transfixed for a few hours reading all the comments from her sycophants. The best bits were guest appearances by Oolon (he wrote such a grovelling post he was completely ignored as too sickly even for them) and Adam Lee (who was told to get lost and not come back until he had read Feminism 101)Percentage wrote:Ok, wow. I seriously need to follow McEwan more, for the lulz. Here's Obama's "misogynist" quote:

She also happens to be, by far, the best looking attorney general in the country. It's true! C'mon.
