If your refutation rests-on accusing me of a character flaw... being "obsessed" with America-centric theories. Or if your refutation rests-on attributing-to-me... delusions of Putin as an anti-West hero... then I'm glad you say-so. Because I do trust that's your genuine opinion-- not a rhetorical gambit-- and I know you arrived at that conclusion via honest contemplation. But impeaching me personally doesn't change the fact that legions of other people have arrived at conclusions similar to mine. You dismiss them as bamboozled voters, successfully tricked by Putin, an obstacle to their own more-hawkish/ wiser-than-the-masses government leaders. And maybe you're right. But-- you can't just wish-away me & those masses of fools by loathing us.

I am to blame for making a numbered list of points... as-if they were all parts of one coherent argument.

Those were simply my reactions, as I watched the video. The points I made contradict each-other, because I have no fixed opinion about whether Putin blew up Nordstream, or whether that was a blunder-- or clever. I find Neilson's thesis plausible.

I also found AndrewV69''s 'The Americans Did It' link plausible:
https://www.monkeywerxus.com/blog/the-n ... e-sabotage
And, before that, I found Pseudomonas' 'It was an accident' link plausible:
https://thelawdogfiles.com/2022/09/nordstream.html

By being honest-enough to state his case in perfectly-clear terms-- which any yahoo can understand... Neilson also provides clear departure points where any yahoo can say 'that part doesn't sound right to me'. And it's certainly easier to take potshots at his case, than to build an equally-strong competing case. But... that's just how it goes.
You are projecting your own propensity for thinking in terms of narratives onto Nielsen.
No. That competing-narrative exists, apart from me. Heck-- add to to list of things I find plausible: "Putin is nuts, he really believes those crazy speeches he gives."
Why would you use language like "inadvertently justifies"?
Because it was not the purpose of Neilson's analysis to defeat the 'madman' narrative. But his analysis just-happens to do-so... by showing there are pragmatic reasons for Putin to attack his own pipeline.

FWIW, I stand-by point #3... the "Sun Tzu" use of your opponent's own foolishness, against him. If some bully publicly announces "I'm gonna rape your whole family tree!" Then it's sun-tzu-ish to dig a shallow hole in the dirt over your grandfathers' grave... toss some gay porn and a buttplug in there... and blame the bully, saying he "confessed" to being a gay necrophiliac. Biden is a blowhard, and that has blowback. Yeah, that's "US-centric". I wish this entire conflict was a whole lot less US-centric.

The two main points are that the overt way the pipeline was sabotaged makes the US a less likely candidate than Russia and that it's silly to apply normal economic motivations to Putin right now. He's talking about slinging around nuclear weapons, currently losing a war he started and his people are pissed off with him for involving their family members, so he would absolutely blow up his own pipeline without hesitation if he thought it would drive a wedge between NATO members and sow a seed of fear about infrastructure being taken out. Still not sure who did it, but the reasons for discounting Russia aren't valid.
That's certainly true. The general "Russia did it" claim seems based on nothing more than "Putin is evil, QED". A 4D chess approach by Putin is the only one that would make sense to me. I suppose I'm less inclined to believe that because I don't think Russia is losing as badly as is being reported, although certainly not as well as they report. After how badly the pull out of Afghanistan was handled, it also seems harder to make the claim the US would have been far more precise and surgical if they were responsible. If the last two and a half years have taught us anything, its that the people in charge have no idea what they're doing.

I am mindful of 3FJ's admonition against contaminating Nordstream & Ukraine analysis... with "US-centric" feuds about Trump's hair & Nancy Pelosi's bra size.

But... the US's internal clownshow is relevant to our ability to "project power" as the neocons like to say.

The main message of Tucker Carlson's show Wednesday-- was that the US officials & news media-- are behaving like complete assholes about Nordstream-- completely in-keeping with how they handled covid policy, social justice identity politics, hunter biden's laptop, disappointing economic news, countless other damage control snafus.

They cried 'wolf' too many times, and pissed away their credibility. They might not be guilty of attacking Nordstream, but they're acting like guilty morons would.

Tucker (and perhaps his guest Aaron Mate?) mentioned the term "plausible deniability". And the dirty history of that jargon-- shows it's the Modus Operandi of the same-old Military-Industrial Complex... to do SUS AF shit like attack Nordstream. Or-- out of sheer habit-- spin-it as-if they did it/ even if they didn't.

Suppose Germany folds and wanted to start accepting gas again as winter sets in. If the attack was done below the "detection threshold", then we wouldn't have found out until that time when they wanted to switch on the tap. The surgical precision of that attack being noticed then, and an investigation showing it happened months before would point to a very powerful government actor, and that could only be the US. This way, there's more doubt about who it could be. So, the 4D chess argument can point to anyone, depending on your priors.

My prior is that Putin is rational. Setting up a false flag at the cost of potential large future benefit is hard to square for me. It's possible, but would mean that Russia is far more desperate than they seem to be to me. If that really is the case, then why isn't NATO working on giving Russia an off ramp that allows Putin to save face? Pushing a desperate Russia to breaking point guarantees calamity.

Attorney Aaron Siri has successfully obtained reports from the CDC after twice suing. The court order required the CDC to release vaccine safety information which had been suppressed.

The data was gathered from 10 million individuals who utilized the CDC’s “v-safe” program, a smartphone-based tool for recipients of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The newly released CDC data shows 1.2 million people were unable to perform regular activities, 1.3 million had to miss work or school, and another 800,000 people required medical care after getting the vaccine. A total of 3,353,110 recipients were negatively impacted by the jab.

25% Of People Who Received Covid-19 Vaccination Missed Work Or Reported A "Serious Event" Affecting Their Normal Life Functions, According To Data the CDC Fought To Conceal

7.7% had to seek medical care post-injection.

It took 463 days to receive the data. Attorney Siri says the CDC could have provided the information in a matter of minutes.

US officials deny any knowledge of the Nordstream pipeline sabotage.

Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and Hampshire College have all extended their mask mandates indefinitely.

YALE University still requires masks in class, at the discretion of each professor of African Studies, Comparative Literature, French, German, Art, Music, Theatre, or Gender Studies.

Trinity College still requires masks for all.

Columbia University "strongly encourages" mask use everywhere, and requires masks in 'clinical settings' (despite CDC dropping the mask requirement in healthcare settings.)

Amherst conducts anonymous classroom-by-classroom voting, with a single 'yes' vote forcing all to wear masks.

I predicted that mask wearing would become a cult after the general public gladly dropped it. The original alleged purpose of masking -- to protect others but not yourself -- has been memory-holed. The mask is a mouth-yarmulke, symbolic of one's devotion to the religion. When Fauci finally croaks, they'll probably still speak of him in the present tense, like the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Yes, and it's interesting how political polarization also plays a major role in the formation of this cult. Those studying cult formation will have a field day with this. It appears promises of fear/anxiety resolution combined with tribalism are the ideal soil from which cults grow. It will also be interesting to see how much the leftist roots of the cult contribute to its ongoing evolution.

Yeah. the Dems seem desperate.

I was contemplating what-other stunts they might try-- in the remaining month.

Mail-out free gasoline gift cards with each ballot?

My thoughts drifted-back to 3FJ's link-- saying the more-desperate players are more-likely to have blown-up Nordstream.

Who is at-risk-of being deposed from their position of power, sooner? Putin... or Nancy Pelosi losing her Speaker of the House role?
Who will still be around in 2024-- Putin, or Biden?

If the US were to do something-like attack Nordstream... to Wag The Dog... wouldn't the actual actors doing-it be "the deep state"?
Is "the deep state" more or less at-ease than usual, as this month tics-away?

I visited fivethirtyeight, for the 1st time since dropping-by to see their reaction to Liz Cheney losing her primary.

Today Nate Silver posted a district-by-district exploded-view of his "Deluxe" model of House of Representatives races.

To me-- loosely tallying-up the districts in my head, as I read Silvers' words-- the prospects appear even more-bleak for the Dems, than Silver's 70/30 odds favoring the GOP.

Also, the trump-hating-boomer rhetorical bombast of five38... was dialed-back in Silvers' post. I'm not sure what that indicates.

Describing how Cobra Kai season 5 sucks... is challenging... because all of the adjectives and comparisons... are entirely unsurprising.

I could call it "stale", like some "decades-later reunion of The Brady Bunch"... but that's exactly what it is: a decades-later cast reunion of a movie which spawned worse-and-worse sequels. Of Course it's stale.

The only way to be surprised or disappointed-- is to understand that it Didn't Have To Be shitty. They did everything right to avoid that. This show brought back the old characters, but renewed them by letting them evolve. And successfully introduced a new generation of appealing karate-kids. It didn't assume the audience were superfans/ who knew-and-adored every bit of canonical lore. And last-season ended with some new-ingredient cliffhangers... so there would be different shit to explore. And it 'worked' for both aging fans & new kids.

This season begins-- with one kid finally going to Mexico to confront the scary druglord father he's never met-- and other characters chasing-after him... and it just sorta wraps-up that plotline like cold leftovers.

It's like a co-worker saying they vacationed in Mexico & saw some scary guys in a nightclub... but no one got hurt & everyone came home just-fine. From there-- we get several episodes of people standing-around flat-footed giving soap opera exposition monologues... about their emotional angst about shit-I-barely-remember from previous seasons. Then the few-remaining forgotten minor characters from the Karate Kid sequels... show up for pointless cameos. Then there are some 'isn't this wacky?!' scenes of middle-aged wine moms drinking margaritas at a Chilis... and getting into a mom-version of talking-shit with some other middle-aged bitches. "Your tramp stamp is faded!" "No... Yours Is!"

And all the fun new karate kids that previously won us over... just stand around in dojos in groups. The teen romances degenerate into sulking about breakups. The fat nerd who was previously called 'Penis Breath' gets called Penis Breath again, every time he's on screen. His arc: we discover he dislikes being called Penis Breath, so he switches sides. But the other side still calls him Penis Breath. The fat nerd who plays D&D... is written by screenwriters who never played D&D (but they did see some episodes of Big Bang Theory). His arc-- is to use D&D in the most-predictable way possible... to help the good guys. Also he quotes well-known lines from 80's pop culture. "Come with me if you want to live". Har de har har. I get that reference!!

I wonder if there's some interesting story behind why this season sucks. But it would be perfect if there was no interesting tale or reason for it.

Then it ends with cliffhangers... except not-really. Unfinished storylines aren't cliffhangers. Just clutter.

In the broadest, least-discerning, 'thumb up or down?' terms... I am in-favor of the pardon.

However-- applying more rigor & scrutiny-- I see many valid criticisms.

For example-- I've read that only 6500 people were convicted for "simple possession" at the Federal level, over the 29 years of 1992-2021.
That's 225 per year. And most of those were also convicted of other crimes-- so very few people will actually get their records wiped clean. Of those who were charged soley with simple possession-- how many of those were plea deals? In which case-- I'm not sure it's a good thing-- that someone would be pardoned/ if their actual crime was more severe than the "simple possession" deal they cut.

Personally-- I'm more anti-marijuana than pro. I think weed has far worse downsides than proponents admit. But I'm also against the Federal govt being in the business of prosecuting "simple possession". So count me among the "Biden didn't go nearly far-enough" camp. I doubt a single cent of drug war spending will be cut & saved alongside these pardons & measures.

“As I said when I ran for President, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana,” Biden tweeted.

Senior administration officials said, “there are no individuals currently in federal prison solely for simple possession of marijuana.”

New York Post reported that the Biden administration had encouraged job applicants to admit to their past marijuana use, assuring them that they would “overlook” those that answered truthfully. But then, in March 2021, Biden asked his staffers to resign over marijuana use, regardless whether it was legal in the states they had resided in.

ABC News reported: “Members of Congress have been working on this issue,” Biden administration officials said Thursday. “But that effort has stalled and we’re almost at the end of the Congress. So the president has been considering his options and he’s now taking executive action to address the country’s failed approach to marijuana.” Biden's use of Executive Order to circumvent legislative processes is troubling generally.

4 members of ‘Green Goblin’ subway attack crew ID’d by NYPD
Four members of the “Green Goblin” gang who brutally attacked two 19-year-old women on a Manhattan train have 15 arrests between them, authorities said Friday as they identified the suspects.

Emily Soto, 34, and Mairam Cisse Issouf, Ciante Alston and Dariana Peguero — all 26 — were among the group of suspects who wore full-body neon green leotards while punching and tossing around two 19-year-old women on a Times Square subway train around 2 a.m. Sunday, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig told reporters.

All four identified suspects live in NYCHA’s Queensboro Houses, according to Essig.

Peguero has the most extensive criminal history with nine prior arrests, followed by Alston, who has been cuffed three times, Soto, arrested twice, and Issouf, who has been busted once before, the chief said.

The caught-on-video attack “originally stemmed from an apparent bump on the platform and spilled into the subway car,” Essig said.

The victims were robbed of a cellphone and handbag, cops said.

The bizarrely dressed crew fled after the assault. The other suspects have not yet been identified.

The mother of one of the victims told The Post on Monday that her daughter “said she was attacked by aliens, and I didn’t know what she was talking about.

“Yesterday was her birthday,” said the distraught mom, who asked that she and the victims remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation. “This is how she spent her 19th birthday. I hope they get what they deserve and then some because it’s disgusting.”

The fuming mom suggested that the state’s lax bail reform laws, which have been blasted for creating a revolving-door justice system, jeopardize law-abiding citizens’ safety.

She accused Gov. Kathy Hochul and state pols of “making these ridiculous laws and letting savages walk the streets with nothing but a slap on the wrist.

“Watch the videos of these two girls getting beaten by a gang of grown women, and imagine it was your daughter, granddaughter, sister, mother or friend. Put yourself in that situation,” she said.

Wow… fuckin hell…. John D update.

So… my bi-queer daughter did move in with an 80 pound pit bull. The dog is very happy and gentle, but I don’t care to have a dog with a head bigger than mine. The dog just worries me. What if something sets her off. Fucking thing was bread to kill other dogs… and bulls and shit. Why do poor people love these fucking creatures. Get a Chihuahua and a Glock. The poors stay poor for a reason. And now I have this beast in my house.

I got mad at my daughter because she was supposed to get the beasts nails cut before my wife’s pre- chemo party… but my daughter had a melt-down and became “ non-verbal”. Wtf… really… she texted me that she physically couldn’t talk… and couldn’t take care if the dog…

I had a big bash of a party last Saturday with about 40 people. I called it the pre-chemo party. It was really great and my wife felt good enough to attend. She had been very sick and told me to cancel but I told her I would have the party no matter what. Good decision.

My wife had an 8 hour chemo session today. It went well. She beat me at Scrabble. Now we wait to see how she reacts… and watch her hair fall out.

I have the best boss in the world. He really likes my work… and I crushed a meeting just before taking my wife for chemotherapy. In many ways I a terrifically lucky.

And strangely… my wife is more affectionate and loving than she has been in years. Maybe she can see how much I care for her and am dedicated to her. Things have been rough since we stopped having sex… but that is off the table now anyway.

I may share more stories tomorrow about rental properties etc… but this is enough for now.

If they do a line-up on the green goblin muggers, it'll have to be in leotards with their butts sticking out.

Pit Bulls and PB/crosses can be very sweet and friendly. It's just that were they snap at you for some reason, you might lose your face or arm.

Patterdale Terriers are the latest 'hood dog. They're not big, but will kill anything that moves.

There's this underlying message in our culture that we're never supposed to feel sad, or if we do, it's intolerable. Fuck man, Dukkha.

This will make sense (hopefully) in a minute. My neighbor came over the other day to shoot. He kept popping up high with his shotgun then running the fore-end late (he also tends to short-stroke it.) So I offered what works for me, inter alia, getting a real solid shoulder mount and a The Thing style cheek weld. I also said, most folks dread the recoil of a shotgun, but I welcome it. I love its love taps. It's part of me sending lethal lead down range. The kick is a kick.

I'm not saying become a masochist. But if you recoil from the recoil -- literally and figuratively -- all will turn out shit. Just as a heavy recoil is an inextricable part of operating a shotgun, sadness is inextricable from Life. Learn to manage it, and accept that none of the good things are possible without it. The only reason you're sad is because certain things were so awesome.

It's been a long time since I saw the movie Amores Perros, but I recall terminal cancer & dangerous ghetto dogs as subjects/symbols.

For me-- the years I spent with an extremely dangerous/ but very loving and 'human'-- dog as my closest companion-- was like being a surgeon: an opportunity to rescue a beautiful life/ but also horrible culpability & damage-- if I fucked-up. I've met many owners of cute little dogs-- which were poorly-trained & not-really-understood by their owners (they'd reprimand the dog in paragraphs of words)... but it didn't matter, because their dog at-it's-worst was harmless. And therefore less 'real', you know? No point where the owners' shortcomings were ever catastrophically undeniable.

You're way more disciplined & conscientious than me, John. And you have your daughters & wife to look-after. So maybe you don't need to add a pitbull to your worries.

By the way, the thing I hate about ghetto dog owners-- is that they only take care of them until it's inconvenient-- or the novelty fades-- then they neglect/ abandon/ or kill 'em.

---

Any time I think of cancer, I think of 'Jane'-- a postal carrier, when I worked at USPS as a summer job. She insisted on coming to work, not taking leave, unless she was absolutely too weak. She looked like Porky Pig when her hair fell out. She wore one of those 70's hats made of beer cans & yarn. She understood that life is what we do because we have-to, and a doctor's note saying we can skip work & loaf in bed all day isn't a blessing. As far as I know she recovered. But even if she didn't-- she went out with all her dignity & class intact.

My farm-wife of a grandmother died in her 90's. She had alzheimers, faded hearing & sight, & crumbling bones. But... in her case... it was her son who took the role of drill-sergeant 'jane' on her shoulder/ or a vigilant pitbull owner. He made her get out of bed to shit & to eat. He made her do 3 laps around the house with her walker-- before she could settle-in to a chair. He engaged with her constantly. He added years and quality of life to her existence. I woulda let her stay in bed & fade-away sooner. Which would not have been a crime. She would ask for it... but also had a good attitude about his demands. Like an athlete listening to their trainer for motivation.

In a way-- I think you overriding what your wife would-have asked-for... regarding the party... is you being the 'Jane' for your wife. Nietzsche said women & men are different & we delegate our strong & weak points to each other. Like, a wife can be weak 'for' her hustband, since he doesn't have the luxury to be weak himself. Outsourcing.

I suspect I just wrote a bunch of obvious cliches. Oh well.

Very interesting video. I was vaguely aware of Tate but after this, I think I'm going to delve a little deeper into his content. Obviously I'm not in agreement with several things he says during this interview but he's a funny dude, seems to enjoy ruffling feathers (I'm cut from similar cloth) and is bound to be quite entertaining to watch.

Dementia Joe has, at most, 88 more days in the White House.

Biden's usefulness to the Dems is just about exhausted. He first was a foil to Bernie, then a tool to depose Trump. His late-stage dementia cannot be hidden any longer, and he's dragging down the entire Party.

The Dems don't want to rock the boat right now. But following the impending mid-term slaughter, Joe is toast. They'll cut him.

Under the 25th Amendment, a majority of both houses of Congress must approve a VP nominee, in the case that the current VP replaces the exiting POTUS. At it stands now, the Dem House would approve a nominee, and in the Senate, RINOs like Romney, Murkowski, Collins, or Sasse could be persuaded to break ranks. Otherwise, it's 50-50 with no Kamala VP as tie-breaker. The House is definitely flipping, so once the new Congress is seated, any of President Harris' nominees could be shot down. So Brandon must go before then.

Jill will protest, but can be bought off by warning her about the impending fall of not just Hunter, but the entire Biden Crime Family. A spitroast by a couple of Chippendales might sweeten the deal for her.

Perforce -- as so many of my former lefty friends have canceled me -- I've made new friends of the conservative or libertarian persuasion. They are also not dumb, and have realized that something terribly wrong is up. But due to, again, lack of a knowledge base, are flailing about in the dark as to what is really up. So they fall for conspiracy theories. (In that, they are generally right, but wrong about which ones.) I try not to slam on their ignorance, and I've come up with a little maxim that I hope will redirect them:

The conspiracy theories are a fabrication of the real conspiracy to distract us from noticing the real conspiracy.
I call it the Salamander's Tail. If you've ever seen a cat go bonkers over the wriggling tail that a fleeing salamander has sacrificed, you'll understand.

For example, Pizzagate postulates that the Clintons ran a DC pizza parlor where one could order children to sexually abuse. Then Anthony Bourdain would cook up the kiddies' livers for Hillary. That is ludicrous, but it diverts scrutiny from the very real fact that Bill and countless other potentates hobnobbed with Epstein, turned a blind eye to his underage sex slavery ring, and may well have sampled the goods.

"Adventures in being a Landlord"... or... "Let's Act Stupid":

Oh boy. One one my daughter's "partners" is Jessi (they/them) who is a biological woman and has a child called Ace (also a they/them). Jessi decided the bestest and bestest place in the world is Denver Colorado. Their opinion is that Denver is the most inclusive place for the "they/them" and "Zee/Zir" club. My daughter tells me she will move in with Jessi as soon as they find a big enough place.

Jessi owns a house in Westland, a lower-middle class neighborhood that is not getting much better with time. They lived with a dood who rented a room and helped pay bills. When Jessi left he said he wanted to buy the place. So... they made a verbal agreement that he would pay the mortgage and bills and they would sell them the place with time. No lease. No paperwork. No legal protections of any kind. Jessi just said... yea... sure... you can live in my house while I am in Denver.

Well, of course, the dood gets behind on his payments. He was just a renter before and now his bills went way up. His solution is to just stop paying. For the last three months Jessi has been asking the guy to leave, but he will not budge. So, my daughter drove over there yesterday to serve him an eviction notice. They told the dood they were going to enter the house (24 hour notice) but he locked the screen which has no key. My daughter taped the notice on the door. I told her she should have cut the screen and found the fucker and served him, but she got scared. She had previously asked me to go with her, but it was chemo day and I was busy. Funny how people really hate guns.... until they don't. She even asked me to come help her and bring my pistol... haha.

I told them to get a lawyer, but they are both broke. Jesus... what a mess. But, it is an irony. Leftists, like my daughter, want all kinds of protections for renters and they want to get rid of guns until they realize what happens when things go wrong. Landlords are pretty much fucked with the way things work. Landlords have to protect themselves with legal documents. You can't let someone stay in your house because they are "cool". Mistakes were made. This will not have a pretty ending.

My greatest desire is to get this beast out of my house... but she tagged along when my daughter moved in. It will take on hell of a fight to get rid of it. It is Jessi's dog and my daughter promised to care for it. There is a reason some people stay poor... and it is usually bad decisions. Why would someone, who already has pets, add a pit bull to their menagerie when they make $12 an hour? Stupid ghetto bull shit.

I dealt with a quite a few tenants over the years and once had to deal with a stubborn will not pay, will not leave, will not be served couple. I just happened to get a hold of a bailiff that was already after these assholes and was willing to help me serve them for free. Between him getting the door slammed in his face and me near him with the residential tenancy judge on the phone while he was slamming doors, swearing, and throwing a tantrum that she could hear, they were out of there in a hurry. They left without further ado or causing damage.
Apparently the judge spoke to them very convincingly.
Here we have a special court for residental tenancy disputes and a website that spells out procedures well so you don't really need a lawyer.
The bailiff was good enough to help out for free and I repaid the favor by later helping him keep track of the grifters.
If you have a similar thing to our system in Michigan they should have a website that clearly spells out the rules and how to handle your problems. If so read first before you proceed.
Good luck.

This works.

(Even tho the guy in the video installed it wrong: the 'box' of the zip tie buckle should be on the 'out' side of the knife (the side away from your body when it's folded in your pocket/ aka the pocket-clip side.)

The $15 Amazon/Chy-na version of the Spyderco also works:

I recall NYC has some insane laws on the books concerning "gravity" knives. If you can use gravity in any way to get the blade out it suddenly qualifies for a new legal category with associated heavy sentencing. Probably not applicable for those since they look light, but reading about it was enough to turn me off the idea of folding knives while I lived there.

Correct-- the "gravity knife" law is still on the books... and the government reserves the option to charge you with it.

From nyc.gov website: "Although restrictions have been relaxed, you can still face arrest for possessing a gravity knife depending on the circumstances. The gravity knife could be illegal based upon how it is used or possessed."

"How it is... possessed" includes admitting that you carry it for self-defense. Doing-so "weaponizes" the knife, so you just confessed to carrying a weapon.

jet_lagg wrote: If you can use gravity in any way to get the blade out it suddenly qualifies for a new legal category with associated heavy sentencing.
This has improved, partially, since you lived here. For many years, the 'test' of whether a knife is a 'gravity knife' was whether a cop could flick it open one-handed. Not the person being-charged, but a cop-- who got as many tries as he wanted & was allowed to drop the knife or send it flying-- in his attempt.

The knives I posted above would fail this test-- even without the zip-tie modification-- because a cop can easily hold the knife by the blade and use the weight of the handle to swing it open. He would then be holding the knife by the blade-- in a 2 finger pinch-- but the owner would still be in trouble.

After Tens Of Thousands of citizens-- over decades-- including many many tradesmen carrying their work tools-- were assfucked by this test-- it was finally appealed in court...

...until The State knew they were going to lose. At which point they told the judge they would drop the charges against the guy-who-appealed... and 'voluntarily' stop using the flick-open test... to make the legal challenge go-away. Doing-so allowed The State to keep 'gravity knives' in an un-enforced grey area/ rather than be struck-down.

.

Unfortunately, the zip-tie mod is at-risk of another grey area: the switchblade law. The law clearly defines a switchblade as: "A switchblade is any knife which has a blade which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in the handle of the knife."

But then a cop claimed that a modern "flipper" knife-- with a protrusion on the back-of the blade-- (NOT "the handle") was a 'switchblade'. https://youtu.be/-kXtuUzqAnA And a judge ruled against the knife-owner. So could the definition of "hand pressure" and "in the handle" be twisted to include a zip-tie on the blade? Sure... why not.

.

This morning on the throne of my excremeditation room... I was contemplating what custom laser engraving one might inscribe on the blade (offered free by some online knife dealers) to reduce one's odds of prosecution. Maybe "Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Be Prepared". Or "9/11 Never Forget Our Heroes In Uniform". Today's idea: "[wheelchair symbol] disabled AARP Arthritis Awareness"

.

I will probably grind-and-dremel open the hole on my chinese-spyderco-knockoff, converting it into an "Emerson Wave", so the pocket-deploy is a permanent feature. I will do so because I like to fiddle with things... it may make the knife worse. But I'm curious.

Another shitty aspect of NY's knife governance-- was an nyc prosecutor who targeted hardware stores, prosecuting them as unlawful knife retailers. The big chains like Home Depot agreed to pay a settlement-- over $1 Million-- to make the prosecutions go-away. That prosecutor promised to share the settlement money with other prosecutors in the state... who followed his lead. So little stores stopped selling knives for tradesmen & home improvement. That was over a decade-ago, but mail-order sellers still refuse to sell to addresses in NY state. Including Amazon... which will sell me a dried antler listed as a "dog chew", but will not send me a dried antler listed as "for making knife handles". I divert a few minutes & take the PATH train one-subway stop to an Amazon locker pick-up box in New Jersey.

Well, that was easy.

The 'wave' could have been cut shorter-- and still reliably open on the corner of a pocket.

But-- this way-- the open-end of the thumb-hole is still narrow-enough, that thumbing-it-open works just-like before.

And-- the long 'wave' serves as a beer opener.

Also the tactical-looking blade shape... now looks like dad's friendly pen knife.

As a certified fish monger, you should be able to carry an oyster knife because of your profession.
You never know when you might have to mong a rebellious oyster.
Here's mine, a 4" stainless blade, not razor sharp, but not meant to be.
For self defense, great for stabbing and twisting to get through rib and other sturdy bones. Of course you need to insist that the only self defense you need this for is dealing with uppity oysters.

Yeah... all the fishermen I work-with... have shucking knives which are carefully-crafted with rotten duct tape & just-the-right rusty dullness...

for hours of gripping with ice-cold salty hands. They look like the worst prison shanks you ever seen!

Yours looks like a classy old Alcatraz museum exhibit. heh.

When customers ask if I'll shuck oysters for them... I tell 'em the guy at the Organic Duckmeat Booth likes oysters... and he'll do it for the low price of keeping one oyster per dozen-shucked for-himself.

And you're correct about the professional-use exemption to nyc knife laws. I considered inscribing "F/V [Name of the Fishing Vessel]" on the blade.

=

After one day-- I can already feel that my modification made the blade significantly-more prone to breaking. Woulda been better to start with a knife with no hole... and notch it with a smaller 'wave'. Also, I 'sanded' the new spine-side smooth using the flat of the angle grinder. Instead of being careful with dremel or sandpaper. Unintentional bumps-- with the edge of the grinder wheel-- left a couple of tiny nicks on the spine... which is where a break will likely occur.

I buy folding pocket knives whenever they are on sale. I'm talking around 15-20 bucks. I get them in red and hot pink and cast them about, cuz I'm always misplacing them. I also hand them out as presents. Last Xmas, everyone got either a knife, OC spray, or a tactical pen in their stocking. I've already picked up a couple of mini keychain 10-in-1 tools for this xmas. I dog-sat for my new neighbor who was driving overnight to Vegas, so I gave her an OC spray for the trip. I buy those on sale, too, and always keep a couple around to hand out.

This is potent publicity messaging.

Hillary & Elizabeth Warren would campaign on "as a mother...", but they wouldn't pose with a vacuum cleaner.
(Even tho... legions of women take pride in their role as the ones who push vacuums & clean-up after other people.
Rosanne Barr got very rich and famous... by proudly playing a relatable mom-with-a-vacuum. Politicians didn't learn from her example.)

But now I think we'll see copycats.

Hey, Steersman... how are you enjoying those International Sceptics? In the old days they used to love monomaniacs, there would be threads that went on for years driven by people who thought they had fixed mathematics by turning Pi into a fraction, or had discovered the secret principle that explained gravity. For some reason they don't seem to like your specialist subject so much.

Kari Lake is a treat to watch, especially when she's running nitwit journalists through the masticator.

https://rumble.com/v1j7czy-kari-lake-ma ... _SS__y9ckc

One reason Katie Hobbs may be so panicked about going toe-to-toe with Lake, is Hobbs' voice sounds a lot like that 6-yo. That, and she has no platform other than she's the Democrat:

It used to be the Dems who were always pressing for more debates, but now, in nearly every race, they're limiting it to one debate or outright refusing. Gavin Newsom would only agree to one debate on the radio. Gavin has shifty, liar's eyes, and a dry-drunk's fidget.

Fetterman, the brain-damaged Klingon, finally agreed to a single debate with Dr. Oz but only after early voting had begun. Fetterman can't even talk straight, but he was saying brain-damaged things about releasing murderers from prison long before his stroke.

Mark Kelly got KO'd in his one debate, and may be the one Democrat now wishing for another match-up.

Democrats have pushed the radical agenda so hard, to motivate their base, they must now avoid any situation where they'd be questioned about that agenda where ordinary folks might hear it.
