Even cooler drinking game: ensure there is one less bottle of cava in the world each night. Reminds me of "Four-in-Hand Forsyte" who had a cellar full of his favourite champagne and tried to drink a bottle every night of his life. I ought to be sad that my budget doesn't stretch to my tastes, but since I can have four bottles of cava for the price of one bottle of questionable champagne, I'm making do. Just don't ask me to do it with Asti...

Frankly, I'm amazed my liver enzymes each week are all below the normal range. My kidneys are going to hell as they are getting clogged up with dead and dying lymphocytes, but the well-trained and highly disciplined liver keeps marching on. Oh, well, we must play to our strengths.

It seems this lunatic was fairly active in the atheist/skeptic world. She's also on the board of an org promoting awareness of the perils of chronic Lyme disease. Which doesn't exist. Only hypochondriacs think they have it. Oh, right.

I still believe Silverman was copping a feel. Cuz all good PUAs know the way to a woman's twat is through the nerves in her sacrum.

But seriously, this broad is seriously mentally ill, yet she's obviously found a therapist who facilities her illness and -- this is sadly not oxymoronic -- empowers helplessness.

Here's a segment from The Hill, yesterday, reporting insider-perspectives, of staffers in the Bloomberg campaign.

First-- I gotta mention the elephant in the room: that dress Krystal Ball wore yesterday. Jesus Christ. Did she lose a bet?!

Second-- this segment is oddly schizophrenic. Half of the story-- is that Bloomberg made big promises to keep paying his employees until the Democrat Convention/ and he appears to be breaking those promises. The employees are butthurt about Bloomberg's treachery.

The other half of the story-- is that the employees were themselves dealbreaking traitors: they considered themselves "mercenaries". During the campaign, they shit on Bloomberg on their social media. They took Bloomberg's campaign money to canvass door-to-door... for Other Candidates!

I think there's a huge blindspot in the Rising/KrystalBall/DemocraticSocialist worldview. They're so ready to believe that the 'little guy' is being 'exploited' by the billionairecapitalist ((jew!))... they can't see when the poor wretched worker-- deserves a swift kick in the cunt. They report this story as-if it's an expose on Bloomberg-- not on the democrats who worked for him.

These CORRUPT staffers should not be in charge of national policy, bureaucracies, old people & children's welfare, spending tax money, etc.

If coronavirus proves anything it’s that a society based on individuals will fall at first pressure,

Fucking toilet paper.

Only collective discipline has a chance.
Collective's are made of individuals who will fight over TP until the boss bashes heads, so you are essentially talking about authoritarianism. When it comes to civic responsibility I think you'll find the individuals in the mainland Chinese collective somewhat lacking compared to their Western counterparts. Perhaps you were thinking of Singapore? Very orderly, but wouldn't want to live there.

The real messages of the coronavirus are , never trust the CCP and we are all racists. The lefty media goldfish of the Ministry of Truth are rather exercised over use of the terribly racist words "Chinese coronavirus", having memory-holed their own splashing of the term all over the media just yesterday, starkly demonstrating that truth is whatever helps bash the non-left. The CCP should be blamed for the pandemic. They took steps to protect their military long before they let the public know, waiting until the virus had already taken root, something that probably wouldn't have been possible in a less authoritarian individualistic society.
Nope. It’s black comedy that you are still looking to individually derived virtue as our supermarkets descend into chaos and, lacking anything better, it’s becoming every man for himself.

Maybe I should have been more specific. “A traditional western collective”, not an Eastern communist state.

As in let’s find our common group identity and leverage social synergy under inspiring leadership. Reference the, albeit limited, coming-together occurring amidst Italy’s lockdown.

”We have a better chance of survival if we all work together”.

The current fractures are the dividend of liberal corrosion of community.

Not sure I agree with this:

"A Short Letter to a Misunderstanding Right"

https://newdiscourses.com/2020/03/lette ... ing-right/

The gist of it is that the Marxist and socialist left has been the most vocal critic of the intersectionalist, woke left. This has been true since the beginning and has been true up until today.

If this were the case I would think you would have sen a purge of the University faculties. Maybe this happened, but I think the faculty was already left-wing and mostly went along with the new orthodoxy of intersectionalism. The only exception I can think of is Brett Weinstein at Evergreen. He stands out because he was against it and also left-wing.

Few in media speak out, even though many are products of the pre-woke university. All I see is a deflection to the right. If someone mentions Antifa, the reaction is "Why are you worried about some activists? The real problem is right-wing terrorists." The same for free speech on campus, Black Lives Matter, and other manifestations of this.

Another way to look at it is that if Marxists and socialists have been against this since the start they have done a piss-poor job of fighting it.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/in ... et-either/

fivethirtyeight discusses a forecast by 18 infectious disease experts in the U.S.

On March 16&17... the experts were asked to predict how many U.S. Covid-19 cases would confirmed by Sunday March 29.

The experts' consensus forecast was 19,000 cases: a threshold which was actually crossed on March 20; 9 days earlier than expected.

Today-- a week before March 29-- there are 35,213 cases.
Only 3 or 4 of the experts' "high end" guesses haven't already been exceeded.
Only 2 of the experts' "best guesses" haven't already-been exceeded.
Those 2 experts guesses (50,000 by March 29 and 75,000 by March 29)-- would both represent a drastic downturn in the current expansion-rate of new confirmed cases.

Two major caveats to this data-- are

1. if the daily number of confirmed cases-- actually tracks an expansion of the number of Tests being conducted/ rather than the number of people actually becoming infected. (more people tested = more positive tests).

2. the comments section at fivethirtyeight is so amazed at the experts' low guesses-- that some are questioning whether fivethirtyeight interpreted the survey wrong-- and these were the experts predictions for today (sunday) rather than 3/29 (next sunday).

If there's NOT something like-that skewing the data-- then March 29's actual number of confirmed cases will be in a vicinity which the experts previously-predicted single-digit odds of occurring.... <5% chance.

I would cite this survey-of-expert-opinions to rebut anyone who uses 20/20 hindsight to condemn their political opponents for failing to heed the warnings of scientific & medical experts. The experts themselves didn't predict the numbers we're currently seeing.

The 18 experts polled are affiliated with: Institute for Disease Modeling, University of Washington, New Mexico State University, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, Graduate School of Public Health University of Pittsburgh, Los Alamos National Laboratory, University of Georgia, University of Virginia, Johns Hopkins University, In-Q-Tel, Kaiser Permanente Washington, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, University of Massachusetts- Amherst, Imperial College, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, Carnegie Mellon University, Northeastern University Fogarty International Center, NIH.

Hello Pit - Missed you.

I was able to login using Explorer but not Chrome.

I woke up this morning panting and had a high heart rate. There is a tightness in my chest like I just did a pec workout. No fever. I can hold my breath but my lungs feel tight when I breathe deeply.

I know these are common COVID-19 symptoms. I will see how it goes. Maybe this is mostly in my head. My wife has risk factors (heart disease, diabetes)… not good.

My first thought was that both maps are proxies for population density so it was a visual tautology that didn't mean much. But I think the Icelandic situation definitively shows that international travel was the most important vector. Iceland is a small, sparsely populated country which has become a disproportionately popular travel destination and hub, and perhaps most importantly, has a population that does a huge amount of international travel. It now has about 40% more active cases than Ontario, with a population less than 1/40th of Ontario.

I'm not sure what could have been done, though. The majority of this travel were people returning home. Was it thinkable to strand citizens in a foreign country in a pandemic, or instituting a blanket quarantine on all returning travelers when the nature of the threat wasn't yet known. In 20/20 hindsight, the quarantine would have been the best option. But there are pandemic threats every 3-4 years (SARS, MERS, West Nile, Zika, H1N1), and before this, none of them went pandemic and turned out to be quite manageable without significant policy changes. Is it feasible to institute a blanket quarantine policy for a few months every 3-4 years? I think epidemiologists will study this outbreak in minute detail over the next couple years to the point we know the patient 0 in almost every country, and then some very careful cost-benefit analysis will need to be done to learn what the best policies are for this kind of threat in the future.

I do have to say I'm impressed Thunderfoot was able to release a graphics-only video and didn't feel the need to reiterate his main point about forty times.

While the FT owes us nothing, I hope he does explain what happened and why no replacement home page with an explanatory message was put up. I assume it's a personal or family emergency of some sort, and if so, that comes first, and thanks for taking the time to get things partially up again.

I did notice there's both a private sympepit reddit and twitter account. Does anyone use these as a backchannel? If not, perhaps we should have a mutually agreed backchannel should this type of situation recur. While it's a declining community, I think it's still a valuable one and I would hate to see it go poof in an instant.

I also think that the Pit archive is a significant cultural artifact at this point, and would like to see a public backup of the phpBB database (stripped of all profile and PM content, of course). I'll volunteer to put a searchable front-end on it, if there's interest.

& declaring "Christmas Came Early!!! Everything's Going To Be Just Fine!!!"

Pauline Hanson. The sad thing is that people vote for her. The sadder thing is that she's not even the worst in her party ("Pauline Hanson's One Nation"):

Seems I spoke too soon. No images in posts, or as avatars. True for Firefox, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Opera and Tor.

I had to do a complete reinstall. Will be adding avatars and images back as I get around to it.

Hey! The Pyt's back! Thought maybe FT decided it was time to close shop. I don't visit as often as I used to, but I'd be sad if the pit wasn't there.

I was recently shadow banned at Slate. I don't even know what set them off, as I don't troll there, and I think my posts are fairly innocuous. So I registered as someone new and I'm back on. I've noticed WMD Kitty-the idiot from The Friendly Atheist who repeatedly doxxed Skeptickle-is there now.

Thank you! Apparently restarting and powering on and off failed to fix it so you had to use the nuclear option.

After watching this one:

None of the others seem to have much effect.

Back in the good old days I used to backpack and camp in the local mountains. One of our favorite spots was a cliff wall dropping almost vertically 1000 feet int o the river below. I have to say I watched my footing near the edge very carefully.
What a view too. Across the canyon was the aptly named Castlecrag Mountain that had giant blockish Basalt pillars that look like the crenels on castle battlements.
