The British press are still circling the wagons and churning out articles to defend fair Cathy against beastly Jordan Peterson. I won't bore people with a list, but this one in the Independent trying to link it to #metoo is a gem: Misogynistic abuse against Cathy Newman is a symbol of the backlash against the MeToo movement
Her describing Peterson as like a "cartoon villain" made me chuckle. I suppose for feminists he really is.

I've seen a few other people criticise Channel 4's male editor for daring to give Peterson airtime and pitting poor sweet Cathy against him. I wonder if he's going to face any consequences for it, or if it being such successful clickbait will protect him?But it is very easy to attack Cathy Newman, the female journalist whose male editor thought it would be a good idea to interview Jordan Peterson.

Peterson would like a second round with Newman.
Quite some chat up line, there, the filthy cad.
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/ ... sogyny-rowHe suggested an antidote to ill-informed, short-term social media debate was more nuanced, meditative journalism. “Look at the popularity of longform journalism and podcasts,” he said. “It’s nonsense that young people have a limited attention span, or that there isn’t an audience for the in-depth treatment of something.”
And he has an idea for one such project. “If Cathy is interested, maybe we could model a conversation. That would be a good thing.”

If you haven't already, Netflix original 'Godless' is well worth the time to watch. Jack O'Connell (Skins) playing an American cowboy is pretty awesome, as is Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Game of Thrones) as a small town deputy. My only complaint is Jeff Daniels. He can never be the character he is attempting to play. Even with a fully grown beard he still has 'Dumb and Dumber' facial expressions that ruin Frank Griffin, IMO. Also, Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) playing a twice widowed ranch owner. Other cast include Scoot McNairy and Sam Waterson, with a bonus Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy and "Warriorrrrrrrrs, come out and playyyyyyyyyyyy.").

I don't deny that most TV news programs and national papers didn't mention "sectarian dangers" or how this was going to be one huge gift to Iran. But more than just the back room knew this. Shitlord chimps are already corrupted by the Patriarchy
Patriarchy Hurts Animals Too :bjarte:"The research represents the first time wild animals of different sexes have been observed playing differently with objects, a practice well known among human children and previously observed in captive vervet and rhesus monkeys, Wrangham said.
For instance, young female monkeys in captivity have been known to favor dolls as playthings, while their male counterparts prefer "boy" toys like trucks.
"The fact that captive monkey males and females prefer typically masculine and feminine human toys, respectively, suggests that there is something biologically different about the sexes that makes them gravitate to different types of toys," co-author Sonya Kahlenberg, a biologist at Bates College in Maine, said by email.

If you guys want the inside scoop on all the RussiaGate / BillBrowderGate / ThatRussianLawyer / FusionGPS stuff, Lee Stranahan (former journalist for HuffingtonPost and Breitbart, and current Sputnik radio host) is digging into all the stuff that both the left and right are refusing to cover. Here's some of his videos.dogen wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2018 10:42 amA couple of pages ago, I made a comment toward the more right-leaning members of the pit (esp. John D and Vicky), asking why they weren't overly concerned with Trump's financial links to Russia. It seems the House testimony from Glenn Simpson (Fusion GPS) lays out these links in some detail. Here's a brief summary (warning: Daily Kos, feel free to ignore the comments):
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/1 ... is-a-crook
Let me put my question again: as it seems increasingly likely that Trump is financed by Russian mobsters and/or the Russian state (the two are largely interchangeable), are you not a little concerned that this could render him susceptible to their influence? ESP. Vicky, how is it you get all moist and fishy over his business acumen, when he's simply a mark for the mob?

Lee's videos are often kind of long, so you might want to change the settings to 1.25 or 1.5 speed. His youtube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvc-zk ... =0&sort=dd which youtube hugely suppresses and shadowbans. There are a mix of videos there, both the radio show and his own personal videos on the various topics.
And here's a bonus fun read - "that Russian lawyer", Natalia Veselnitskaya's testimony to the Senate, from a couple months ago. The media on both sides are not covering it, yet there's a lot of revealing stuff in it: http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/TODAY/z_Cre ... 0(eng).pdf

The thing that makes me the saddest about the 2016 election was that we didn't have a better candidate. I thought Clinton was vastly superior to Trump on the basis of Trump's pathological lying and idiosyncratic behavior, but I don't really have an answer for people who think Clinton is a turd. I think she is cynical, has shown bad judgement in a bunch of foreign policy matters (i.e. Libya and Iraq) and generally considers herself above the rules (hence the improper use of email, which isn't as damning as Republicans would like it to be, but still shows some level of casual disregard for the rules). There was a documentary/news story (can't recall which) in which an expert on the Middle East recounted a meeting with Blair in the lead up to the invasion wherein he tried very hard to explain the nuances of the Iraqi situation , but all Blair wanted to know was if Saddam was a 'bad man'. Also recall someone saying that Gee Dub had to have the existence of the Sunni/Shia divide explained to him. I think that Blair and Bush's devout Christianity motivated their actions. It is said that Rumsfeld had his staff put biblical scenes and quotes on the cover of important proposals sent to Bush as it seemed to influence the reception. Blair and Bush were on a righteous mission and nothing was going to stop them. The likes of Rumsfeld and Cheney manipulated that fervour to achieve their own ends.Billie from Ockham wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 8:00 amI don't deny that most TV news programs and national papers didn't mention "sectarian dangers" or how this was going to be one huge gift to Iran. So weird that the Pit seemed during my last few visits more like I'm at one of the old sjw hangouts than the free speech & freedom loving & not-falling-for-bullshit type of place it once was. Oh well, we'll always have had the good old days! We were all part of the early rebellions against the recent years of crazier and crazier left wing politics. Our side grew stronger and more quickly than the commies expected, and it all kept branching into other things from GamerGate to Brexit, with mocking and disputing the commies spreading throughout the world, and ended up with enough people on the Trump train to get him voted in. That was despite the other side having the media in their pockets, a massively rigged election to overcome, and major funding from globalist communists.
Lol, I guess I should have put a trigger warning on the above paragraph, since it might upset any anti-Trumpers here to realize they were an early part of the movement that culminated in his Presidency. And it's a good thing too. If Hildebeast had gotten in, most of the world if not all, would be living in a real life Orwellian 1984 right now.

The safe space thing was obviously not the same thing as claiming that any Pitters actually support safe spaces. It was an exaggeration insult when I offered you a safe space as one of the anti-Trumpers in my other post.Shatterface wrote: ↑ If you can find a pitter who supports safe spaces or censorship please let quote them.

As for censorship, well, there IS sometimes censorship. Remember when Lsuoma did a PZ-worthy re-wording of other peoples' posts last year? PZ used to only devowel them which meant you could still figure them out, but when all my "Trump"s got changed by Lsuoma to some phrase like "Bunny and Nectar shut the fuck up", it was an even worse thing. Couldn't even be figured out what I really wrote.
And how many times has it happened here? I know it happened at least a few other times back when I used to follow the Pit almost every day. Anyways, whatever. I don't make the rules here. I'm just saying how it feels to me. Obviously, your mileage varies.

By good old days, I mean back when we were fighting for the same things that Trump (and lots of the rest of the world) if fighting for right now. Freedom from the over-controlling left. And remember, before you try to accuse anyone on the right of being nazis, nazis were on the left too. Hitler made them add "socialism" to their party name. "workers party" is in there too. Either phrase says "far left" and both together SCREAM IT.Billie from Ockham wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 10:21 amIf the "good old days" included a mind-set that couldn't see the problems with Trump, then I'm glad that I wasn't here then. What problems are you referring to? No one's problem-free, but I just see him winning and winning beyond all my expectations and against huge obstructions. I wouldn't want to quite go so far as to put him on a pedestal, but if I had, he wouldn't have fallen off it yet.
Actually, don't answer that. Lol. If his name gets mentioned by me in a positive light and in too many posts, like it might if we discuss that back and forth, a certain someone will throw a tantrum and change my words again. Maybe ban me to a special bad peoples' subforum again or something. Forget I asked! Yeah, I know I could just delete these last two paragraphs instead of saying to forget it, but it illustrates my earlier point about how the Pit feels different to me than it used to. See how I hesitate to even discuss things here? Feels a bit sjw/A+ like.

Re: There are 2018 genders... and a bitch ain't one of them
I will grant that Trump's direct effect on me (other than the gov't shutdown, which could cost me a lot) have been positive, in that some of the crazier policies of the Obama Admin with regard to gender-shit-on-campus are no longer in force. But that's about it. Capitalizing on anger about something to get elected is not the same as fighting something. Not even close. Even more, I, for one, got into all this to argue against the role of religion in politics and law. (When I started, I couldn't give two shits about SJWs, as they weren't [and still aren't] very effective.) So, with regard to what I originally cared about, Trump has been a step backwards, as he is embracing the erosion of the First Amendment, not standing up for it at all.Scented Nectar wrote: ↑ By good old days, I mean back when we were fighting for the same things that Trump (and lots of the rest of the world) if fighting for right now. What problems are you referring to? No one's problem-free, but I just see him winning and winning beyond all my expectations and against huge obstructions. I wouldn't want to quite go so far as to put him on a pedestal, but if I had, he wouldn't have fallen off it yet.

I love a good Hitler reference as much as the next guy, SN, but, in this case, I was only objecting to your black-and-white thinking. There are ways in which Trump is better than either H. Clinton or Sanders would have been. There are ways in which he is worse. Rounding it all off to a single up or down vote is one of the things that I see The Pit are trying to avoid. Thus, what I objected to more than anything else would the idea that some kind of return to black-or-white thinking of a certain sort should be link to some form of "good old days."

If anybody actually has some valid criticism of Trump, I generally let it pass without comment. I am not hearing much valid criticism.
And it is interesting to note the contrast AND the hypocrisy, because the Russia thing keeps being brought up despite a year of the media banging on about it with zero solid evidence and substantial evidence to suggest it is politically contrived fake news. But dare to point out that #Pizzagate is trending, that the accused can't keep their stories straight, that there is circumstantial evidence which is creepy as hell, and you are called a conspiracy theorist.
So you are saying you believe Pizzagate? So you are saying Trump is the greatest president ever and without flaw? There are far too many Cathy Newmans on this forum.

Here's some interviews of her from last year if you're interested.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Magnitsky
Why was Magnitsky jailed?Magnitsky was arrested and imprisoned at the Butyrka prison in Moscow in November 2008 after being accused of colluding with Hermitage.[4] Held for 11 months without trial,[4] he was, as reported by The Telegraph, "denied visits from his family" and "forced into increasingly squalid cells."[16] He developed gall stones, pancreatitis and calculous cholecystitis, for which he was given inadequate medical treatment during his incarceration.[4] Surgery was ordered in June, but never performed; detention center chief Ivan P. Prokopenko later said that he "...did not consider Magnitsky sick... Prisoners often try to pass themselves off as sick, in order to get better conditions."[17]
On 16 November, eight days before he would have had to have been released if he were not brought to trial, Magnitsky died. Prison officials at first attributed his death to a "rupture to the abdominal membrane" and later to a heart attack.[4] Reporters learned that Magnitsky had complained of worsening stomach pain for five days prior to his death and that by the 15th, he was vomiting every three hours, and had a visibly swollen stomach.[17] On the day of his death, the prison physician, believing Magnitsky had a chronic disease, sent him by ambulance to and later transferred him to Matrosskaya Tishina prison's medical unit, which was equipped to help him.[18] But the surgeon there—who described Magnitsky as "agitated, trying to hide behind a bag and saying people were trying to kill him"—prescribed only a painkiller, and left him to receive a psychiatric evaluation.[17] Magnitsky was found dead in his cell a little over two hours later.
According to Ludmila Alekseeva, leader of the Moscow Helsinki Group, Magnitsky had died from being beaten and tortured by several officers of the Russian Ministry of Interior.[19] The official death certificate stated "closed cerebral cranial injury" as the cause of death (in addition to the other conditions mentioned above), and the post-mortem examination showed numerous bruises and wounds on Magnitsky's legs and hands. Another post-mortem from 2011 summarized the death as being caused by "traumatic application of the blunt hard object (objects)" as confirmed by "abrasions, ecchymomas, blood effusions into the soft tissues".[20]
Journalist Owen Matthews described Magnitsky's suffering in Moscow's Butyrka prison:
According to [Magnitsky's] heartbreaking prison diary, investigators repeatedly tried to persuade him to give testimony against Hermitage and drop the accusations against the police and tax authorities. When Magnitsky refused, he was moved to more and more horrible sections of the prison, and ultimately denied the medical treatment which could have saved his life.[21]
RT has a different story for sure. It is after all Putin's mouth piece.Exposing the scandal[edit]
In his investigation, auditor Magnitsky came to believe that the police had given the materials taken during the police raids to organized criminals, who used them to take over three of Hermitage's Russian companies and who fraudulently reclaimed $230m (£140m) of the taxes previously paid by Hermitage.[4][16] He also claimed police had accused Hermitage of tax evasion solely to justify the police raids, so they could take the materials needed to hijack the Hermitage companies and effect the tax refund fraud. Magnitsky's testimony implicated police, the judiciary, tax officials, bankers, and the Russian mafia.[4] In spite of the initial dismissal of his claims, Magnitsky's core allegation that Hermitage had not committed fraud—but had been victimized by it- was eventually validated. A sawmill foreman pleaded guilty in the matter to "fraud by prior collusion", though the foreman would maintain that police were not part of the plan.[16] Before then, however, Magnitsky became the subject of investigation by one of the policemen against whom he had testified as involved in the fraud. According to Browder, Magnitsky was "the 'go-to guy' in Moscow on courts, taxes, fines, anything to do with civil law."[7]
According to Magnitsky's investigation, the documents that had been taken by the Russian police in June 2007 were used to forge a change in ownership of Hermitage.[7] The thieves used the forged contracts to claim Hermitage owed $1 billion to shell companies. Unbeknownst to Hermitage, those claims were later authenticated by judges. In every instance, lawyers hired by the thieves to represent Hermitage (unbeknownst to Hermitage) pleaded guilty on the company's behalf and agreed to the claims, thereby obtaining judgments for debts that did not exist; all while Hermitage officials were unaware of these court proceedings.[7]
The new owner, based in Tatarstan, turned out to be Viktor Markelov, a convicted murderer released two years into his sentence.[7] The company's fake debt was used to make the companies look unprofitable in order to justify a refund of $230 million in tax that the companies had paid when they had been under Hermitage's control. The refund was issued Christmas Eve of 2007. It was the largest tax rebate in Russian history.[7]
Hermitage contacted the Russian government with the findings of its investigation. The money, which was not Hermitage's, belonged to the Russian people. Rather than opening a case against the police and the thieves, the Russian authorities opened a criminal case against Magnitsky.[7]

The democrats have forced the shutdown. They won't sign off on the funding issues unless Trump agrees to add in their version of DACA which is already being negotiated/discussed separate from this funding thing. It's very unethical and not Trump's fault for resisting the extortion.
I don't think he capitalized on peoples' anger. At least not just to get voted in. He's actually fixing the problems, so it wasn't an empty sales pitch. He's stopped the increase of the things making people angry and is gradually reversing a lot of it. Considering the gov't obstruction he gets from all sides and the media smear stuff, he's doing extremely well. Financially, the US is coming back up. It was on it's way to 3rd worldish shithole status. It would have been another North Korea if Killary had gotten in.
With religion, Trump's separating it from the state by freeing it from extra laws saying what they were and weren't allowed to talk about, so that goes towards more 1st amendment freedom of speech and religion. Religious places were not allowed to discuss politics with their congregations or else they would lose their tax exemptions. Mind you, I also don't think that religions or charities should be tax exempt at all, but if they are, then don't also force them to give up their free expression or any other rights. That makes it a bribe to not discuss political issues with their congregations where they might have influence, and which must have scared Lyndon Johnson when he made that law.
With the whole abortion issue, I don't think that is even a religious issue necessarily, since lots of people might be horrified at the idea of paying for someone's late term live-birth-abortion, or even an early one. It's a touchy topic unless it's medically necessary, since it does involve the voluntary killing of a human being, regardless of whether it's legal or not, and regardless of whether one thinks of it as good or bad. Same with forcing a doctor to perform abortions or euthanasia if it goes against their personal beliefs, religious or otherwise. And contraception is also a recreational activity expense, so if an employer of any religious belief or non-belief doesn't want to pay for it, it's no different than not wanting to pay for an employee's new computer or bike helmet or new furniture. The employee can do it themselves out of their paycheques.

Rubbing people up the wrong way feeds me and makes me stronger. But I certainly hesitate to raise ideas which I want to entertain but not accept. It's not that I mind a pissing contest, it is that the left wingers here instantly jump to the conclusion that you have not only accepted those ideas, but bought into them, bought the t-shirt and advocate for them. And then several months later, someone will accuse you of being a Trump sucking, climate change denying, bigfoot believing conspiracy theories.Scented Nectar wrote: ↑ [...] but it illustrates my earlier point about how the Pit feels different to me than it used to. I see it as part of the same movement and flow of things, just further branched and evolved. I might be wrong though in other peoples' opinions. I think the intention of the left was to present a bunch of problems in typical commie style and then offer the sales pitch for a solution: global communism. But, people saw the problems, both real (open borders problems) and false (world riddled with isms and phobias), and did NOT accept the offered solution which was supposed to be a heavily state-controlled communist solution.Billie from Ockham wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 11:32 amI love a good Hitler reference as much as the next guy, SN, but, in this case, I was only objecting to your black-and-white thinking. The Euroviet Union might get a bit worse though before they get better though. The EU sounds like it's getting ready to bring in a UN/EU-army solution to all the culture-clash problems they brought in with the open borders thing. A police state and a new enforced planned society/culture (or else). Modern day techno-communism. At least if it's not a global gov't, then maybe other countries can rescue them, like they did to the people living under Hitler.

I disagree with you on a lot here, especially the contraception thing. However, I recognize that these arguments exist, and there are people on the right who can make very convincing arguments (not neccarceraly correct arguments, but convincing). I also recognize that the arguments against them might me arguing for the right outcome, but are terrible fucking arguments.
But mostly, I recognize that Trump (although more of a Democrat) joined the Republicans and has to play lip service to their wishes. Employers being forced to pay for contraception is a Democrat policy, you have the option to vote for them if you really want it. Frankly I thought employers were paying for health insurance not the drugs, i think you are on a slippery slope if you employer gets a say on what medical treatments you are entitled to under that insurance.

Wiki is just quoting a bunch of mainstream newspapers, a documentary, and a letter from someone (representing some company - Moscow Helsinki Group) in the above. I checked the list of citations at the bottom of the page. Nothing I can consider as for sure credible since it's all at least once removed from the actual source of the info they're conveying.free thoughtpolice wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 11:49 amScented Nectar wrote:She claims not to be working for the Russian government, that Magnitsky was a criminal, that died in jail which was giant coincidence.
When Magnitsky refused, he was moved to more and more horrible sections of the prison, and ultimately denied the medical treatment which could have saved his life.[21]RT has a different story for sure.

I'm in the middle of Witcher 3 right now. It's a remarkable game, I'll be playing it until Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out, hopefully sometime this spring.Jack Wooster wrote: ↑I'm still playing Skyrim with a fair few mods the Vilja one has thousands of lines of dialogue and I still haven't got to the end of it.dogen wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2018 10:48 amMy 13yo daughter has recently switched up from Minecraft to Skyrim (on PC). Most of the controls she gets naturally, but she never learned how to strafe (A, D) and so goes around corners having to furiously slew the mouse. My husband(who's only ever played phone games)has gotten into it. It's hilarious watching him learn to use the controller. Witcher 3 is next on the list.
She also wants to run full tilt at everything; I end up yelling "It's a bow, not a bloody pickaxe! Leave some distance!"
It's been a long time since I last played Skyrim myself; I made myself a new character so I could follow her through the level progression. It's still buggy (altho that might be the absurd number of mods I've installed), but also still engaging, beautiful and a lot of fun.

I checked the list of citations at the bottom of the page. Nothing I can consider as for sure credible since it's all at least once removed from the actual source of the info they're conveying.

Also, someone mentioned left-wingers - who are they?

And then several months later, someone will accuse you of being a Trump sucking, climate change denying, bigfoot believing conspiracy theories.Scented Nectar wrote: ↑ [...] but it illustrates my earlier point about how the Pit feels different to me than it used to. I guess I am a bit of a Trump fan though, and I don't buy into the climate change money grab anymore.

May I interrupt the current argument about Trump to appeal for computery help?
I spilled Coke (no, not "come", thanks very much autocorrect, I haven't done that since last week) on my laptop keyboard. I've cleaned it up as best I can, and when I plug in the mains adapter the charging light comes on, but the power button doesn't work. Is this likely to be fixable?
