Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Ah the joys of psychology.
Right now, upon finding out the person I've been winding up for being a bit stupid for the past few hours actually lives next to me. So close, we're in the same IP pool. This has certain unavoidable connotations.
So either I'm arguing with myself for attention, which isn't the case, or I have had my suspicions concerned about the mental state of people living near me confirmed.
The knee-jerk reaction is to attempt to do anything I can to prove to the onlooker that I am a distinct individual, but ironically that has the side effect of making it look like I'm trying to bolster up the act that some might think I'm perpetuating. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Either way, I'm gonna go grab some smokes and some food. The roads are getting a bit icey so I'll be a while. The upshot is, if I do spin out of control and run over someone, it just might be Eucli.

HAHAHAHA... I agree with theamazingatheist... I think I'll call myself an atheistatheist now, to separate myself from them. if you want to refer to a group that includes me, you'll have to say atheistatheist, and if you mean to say that atheistatheists are like the religious nuts they protest against, you're telling vicious lies. :arrow:Plonk wrote:i got a pic of it. it will be hard to keep up with the comments on that video.acathode wrote:It's simply impossible to follow the comments on the video atm, as far as I can tell it hasn't been up for even 2 hours yet afaik, and got 1000+ thumbs up and 500+ comments, and it's probably grow even faster, seeing as TheAmazingAtheist just left a comment, favorited and commented on it, making at least some of his 300.000+ subscribers go check it out as well...

During the week between the last thread at ERV's and me coming over here to the new forum style, the no editing rule was one of the things that made me decide to stick with it. Also, the fact that tone rules never got put in, as well as having a single thread style just like the Pit has always had. Those things convinced me it was all still good, so I came back from my week off. :)Lsuoma wrote:Only kidding. Same reason I leave everywhere I've ever left: I got bored and wandered off. More specifically, no matter how pretty they are, there's an upper limit to my tolerance for being surrounded by spectacularly stupid people who think they're incredibly clever. The foundations of the faith are intelligent design creationism, only instead of god, they've got space aliens. I more than half think more than half of them are playing a Pastafarian-esque game of pretending believe in a patently ridiculous set of dogmas for comedy value, but at least a decent-sized chuck of them really truly buy into all of it.dinkum wrote:if only I had stumbled across them in my pre-domesticated days, alas. Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Hm. After spending a while reading AVFM this morning (spurred on by the commentary earlier in the thread), I'm pretty certain I'm not into the MRA, at least not that manifestation of it. Not my bag. Not to say that some areas aren't interesting - I liked the interview of the chick who'd worked in domestic violence, Erin Pizzey. Like others I'm not seeing a massive difference between feminism and the MRA - both are working in some areas that have absolutely justifiable needs that are specific to specific sexes, and good for them, well done, jolly super, I support those actions/goals. I also support the idea of them fighting the fuck out of each other. But beyond that I genuinely don't give a fuck and I don't have an interest in reading a lot of stuff filled with academic buzzwords.
Fair enough to those who are into that.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Haven’t watched TF’s video yet – next on my to-do list – but that comment from The Amazing Atheist is spot on – even if I think he had a bit of a melt-down not too long ago on that issue, seems guilty of the same thing, and even if I think he’s out to lunch on, apparently, blaming just the Newtown shooter: social values and policies have an influence on what we all, or most all of us, do. But the philosopher/biologist Massimo Pigliucci highlighted that problem – and in the context of PZ Myers’ “intemperate hormonal rage†– almost three years ago:Plonk wrote:i got a pic of it. it will be hard to keep up with the comments on that video.acathode wrote:It's simply impossible to follow the comments on the video atm, as far as I can tell it hasn't been up for even 2 hours yet afaik, and got 1000+ thumbs up and 500+ comments, and it's probably grow even faster, seeing as TheAmazingAtheist just left a comment, favorited and commented on it, making at least some of his 300.000+ subscribers go check it out as well...

I am often told by my non-activist friends (pretty much all of whom are agnostics or atheists themselves) that the problem with the new atheism is that it looks a lot like the mirror image of the sort of fundamentalist rage that we all so justly abhor. I always shrugged at this accusation as being overblown and missing the point, after all we — unlike them — are on the side of reason and true human compassion. Now I’m not so sure.

No defense of them, but if the forum manages to generate controversy and discussion even with such a small (or mainly inactive/banned*) membership then isn't it probably achieving what it was supposed to? (by which I mean what it was really supposed to) Its profile has grown vastly beyond its membership, I don't think the death knell will be when there are no non-mod members logging in anymore, it will be when people stop talking about it.Tony Parsehole wrote:From the A+ Forum right now:

My guess is that it will slowly peter out until people are no longer able to find new things there to point and laugh at. It's not likely to blow up in any spectacular way unless that one moderator who is supposedly a sleeper agent breaks cover.

I've always been very fond of hospitals. Not only have I seen most of my family die there in nice, sterile surroundings, deprived of any pride or human similarity they may have had, but the sheer joy of all the sorrow and despair makes my own life a seem little bit lighter. Where other people can do with the odd I'm-a-cripple-but-very-happy-and-believe-in-God stories that mainstream media is cluttered with, I myself find it hard to get that lovely oh-god-thats-horrible-thrill just by reading about it, so once in a while I put the rescue 911 tapes back in the shelf, zip my pants and go for some genuine excitement.

I liked him until a few months ago, when he started saying that Assange should take what's coming to him and that there was no way he'd be in danger if the US had him in custody. I was like whaaaaat? To be honest, I watched that video, saw him smoking wondered about the camera angle, and decided he must be using a bonercam.cunt wrote:Yeah, it's kind of ironic that he's accusing thunderf00t of just elevating a personal feud to an ideological argument and being small-minded.Tony Parsehole wrote:He has no idea what he's talking about. A+ seems to have evolved into a small discussion circle basically for the mods and for their closest pals where they can play fort. I don't think they would even be much offended by that characterisation. The high-profile initial advocates seemed to spot that pretty quickly, one only wonders what will be the next move. Creating a new label/community is not going to happen again anytime soon if A+ fails.

Feel free to show otherwise.
Welp, the difference between my propaganda and the baboon propaganda can easily be seen if you compare what the baboons say about this place, the Slymepit and the reality of it.
So if you find yourself with the view that MRA = icky and you can attribute the source to the baboons, then clearly they are better at propaganda than the other side.
Yes?
The issue to my mind is that I do not think I am doing propaganda, but you appear to think that I (and my ilk) are doing so.
So, I do not feel a burning need to come up with a branding and marketing strategy to convince you of anything.
As far as I am concerned it is your issue and only you can resolve it, because it clearly does not matter what facts or evidence that shape my views that I drag before you (like some cat with a tortured and now expired mouse), you are likely to respond :
No! ICKY! Bad Fluffly! Do not want!

Ophelia Benson doesn't understand why Feminism might be blamed for the lack of male teachers in elementary schools.
She says that's not what feminism is all about! But she also says that there is nothing wrong with a staff that is 100% female, it would be the same good as a staff that was 100% black -- no one could have a problem with that!

Thank you lords of diversity and social justice... Thank you Benson for not understanding that men are put off from teaching in the school system because of the very real threats of false accusations of sexual harassment that feminists insist we ignore and that can cripple a person's life and ruin their careers.Jesus H Christ almighty – what is she talking about?? Is she claiming that feminism keeps men out of elementary schools? Wtf? Since when does feminism claim that elementary school teachers should all be women? The point of feminism is more that university professors should not all be men. And then, she finds a sea of women’s names depressing. I find that depressing. Same old shit – imagine her saying that if you replaced “the sea of women’s names†with “the sea of black faces.â€

Coughlan drama is always good. Like the time he went over the states to fuck his internet girlfriend, who literally asked him to marry her for a british visa. Being a prat, he took that to mean "marry me and we'll be together forever". She changed her mind about moving to the UK and started fucking a bisexual guy with HIV. They broke up. So Coughlan did a shit load of crack and woke up the next day with his legs all fucked up.

YOU SAID "bitch" ??!! :oMykeru wrote:...my bitches.Dick Strawkins wrote:Eucliwood,
Perhaps you need to be informed of the reason for the Slymepit before you make incorrect assumptions as to its purpose and style.
The Slymepit is, essentially, the bastard child of PZ Myers and Greg Laden.
These two individuals single arseholedly managed to bring together a disparate band of opponents of demagoguery and sycophancy to create the only force in skepticism with the power to withstand the unholy malevolent shitbaggery that the FTB-Skepchick axis of idiocy has unleashed on the world.
And what is the power we slymepitters possess?
It is the ability to laugh at the pure distilled hypocrisy of our opponents.
It is our collecting examples of Myers telling sexist jokes while lecturing women how to be proper feminists, of wringing his hands at opponents who do not accept the idea of the patriarchy conspiracy and rape culture - all the while having a longstanding policy to threaten uncooperative commenters on his forum with being raped with a dead porcupine.
It is exposing the sham of feminist Stephanie Zvan's defending Greg Laden for calling a female commenter a "bitch" and telling another to "get off the rag and kiss my ass".
It is the exposure of Ophelia Benson lying through her teeth to defend the despicable actions of her friends and condemning others as mysogynists for using the same words her friends do and in the same context.
It is the fact that we are skeptics who allow every viewpoint to be exposed here and for not banning people for simply reading the 'wrong' forum.
But the most important thing to recognize about this forum is that we are not, like PZ Myers and Rebecca Watson, doing this for the money.
We are doing it for the LOLs.
For whatever divergent views we may hold about the disgusting hijacking of US skepticism that Myers and Watson have managed over the past few years, we are united in the opinion that the sheer hypocrisy of their actions compared to their high minded words is, well, fucking funny.
So, join in with us.
We appreciate people bringing some new tantalizing course of Ophelia or Surly Amy freaking out at theirs shadows, all the while figuring out how to win sycophants and influence conference organizers.
Go search Ladens or Svans old posts from the pre-elevatorgate days when they were being targeted by the online feminist hit squad of that time (the brain of which was, believe it or not, fucken Physioproffe!)
Theres lots of juicy morsels awaiting discovery.
Don't come here whining about the forum now.
We are interested in the LOLs.
Bring them and you will be considered one of us.
That is all.

I never knew any of that back story though. Sounds very Coughlanesque.

Wouldn't it be nice if people who had nothing to say, simply said nothing, instead of quoting 100 lines of text, images and all, only to add some profundity like "me too!!!"
Yeah, yeah. Grumpy old franc is pushing diarrhoea uphill with a toothpick again, <yawn>.

Yes, some people reach a point where the probability of value added contributions from them approaches zero. This doesn't obliterate them from view, just collapses their comments and you can still expand and view if you wish.

You're not seriously conflating the New Atheists (Dawkins, Dennet, Hitchens et al.) with the Atheism Plus/Skepchick loons (PZ, Rebecca Watson et al.)? Come on, that's trolling pure and simple.Steersman wrote:Haven’t watched TF’s video yet – next on my to-do list – but that comment from The Amazing Atheist is spot on – even if I think he had a bit of a melt-down not too long ago on that issue, seems guilty of the same thing, and even if I think he’s out to lunch on, apparently, blaming just the Newtown shooter: social values and policies have an influence on what we all, or most all of us, do.

Count me the same as Renee. I hold many 'labels' in life.Eucliwood wrote:Yeah, I'm more hesitant to call myself a feminist with the recent wave... But it seems it's easier for people to understand if you give them some labels to research.
