As long as the sand paper in on the inside of the johnny, that's fine. Though I do believe "this kills the man."

But the shooter was a journalist himself. And it's not like the victims were on national TV - just local stuff, right? It's not like she was core in any kind of serious commentary or debate over issues and incidents like Charleston.

I don't think racism is really the root motive; seems more like a run-of-the-mill workplace disgruntlement that maybe was tipped over the edge by other factors, but I don't think what those factors were really matters too much. The perp seems like he was a loose cannon.

But certainly the first gender bending books, the first stories by black, female, and gay authors I read was SF of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and I am very glad to have read them. That isn't Ashley Madison. He picked her up on a strip club. Bought $600 in lap dances, and then paid $1,500 for the act.

http://www.intouchweekly.com/posts/josh ... llon-68130
In Touch Article wrote:“He walked into the Gold Club like a normal patron and said he’d been a fan for a long time and has watched my career grow — he even said from before my boob job until recently — and that he loved watching my very first scene on [an adult website],” she tells In Touch. “Then it got creepy.”
Said Porn Star wrote:“I actually really hope that his wife leaves him and takes his children away from him and leaves him a lonely, bitter man. I don’t think he deserves happiness.”
This coming from the woman who accepted $600 to perform private lap dances for him, and then accepted $1,500 to fuck him. I am sorry, but if you are doing that, you have no place to get on your fucking high horse and play moral judge and jury.

This is why you never fuck hookers.
I hear that some of them have hearts of gold .... :rimshot: Although some are just gold-diggers but then again one doesn't have to be a hooker to qualify as that.

But my experiences have been that most were pretty nice people. As with most "personal service" situations, you treat them fairly and with a degree of respect then they'll return the favour; act like dick or give the impression you're better than they are then I expect the result is pretty much what Duggar was judged as.

Okay so Pournelle commented several times in that thread, but this is the one that is most salient:
Jerry Pournelle | August 24, 2015 at 3:59 am | Reply
I am sorry to hear that Toni did not get an editing Hugo. Of course I am biased, since Jim Baen was one of the five closest friends I have ever had, and we were friends until he died. Toni has been a worthy successor as editor. I would think that those voting for No Award would be ashamed of themselves.

Charles Sheffield famously said that the Hugos were the Special Olympics of science fiction writing, but Charlie was always politically incorrect in many ways. I used to campaign for Hugos — I suppose you could call writing to friends and asking them for their vote campaigning; but it was a lot of work in those days as I had to write a separate letter to each, affix a stamp, set the letter out for the post — and I found that it was boring work, but necessary; those who didn’t campaign usually didn’t win. I only wrote to those who I thopught would like the work; if no one asked them for a vote they might not bother. But it was a lot of work.
I found it easier to get on the Today Show, Tonight Show, Long John Knebel Show, etc., and talk about the space program, and let the show hosts mention my latest book — and a great deal better investment of my time as well. Many of the books that beat my works for Hugos are no longer in print. Most of mine still are.

Sour grapes, I suppose, but there it is.

I no longer involve myself in fan politics, and I never advise professional writers to do so. Had I known I would be so far recovered from my stroke by August, I would have gone to this year’s Worldcon; apparently I would not have missed so very much. I will try to get to the repeat of MidAmericon next year. I go to see my colleagues, my publishers, my agents, and to have fun with whatever fans might still remember me, but I don’t much bother with the award ceremonies. I’d advise all writers to do the same. World SF Conventions aren’t the best use of your time for flogging books. There for some business — all the publishers and editors and your colleagues are generally there — but mostly for fun.

These are the two other communities I've been part of which were raped by SJWs - it's interesting to compare them.

What I saw was the gaming community fought back immediately, as strongly and as calmly as possible. The atheist community kicked us out but seems to have reconsidered now it has noticed SJWs are mental - but that's taken almost 4 years to get this far. The science fiction was the worst - I saw the worst racism there, the worst sexism, and it's only the recent Hugos which has seen some pushback.

But.

The science fiction community are possibly the arse level of nerds, who believe they're smarter than everyone.

The atheists often believe they're smarter, but it includes a lot of rational non-teenage-barf-faces who are simply not religious, not doing it because it's hip and it makes them feel totes intelligent to rip on Christians. The make-up of the pit is largely skewed toward older people or people with previous exposure to cult-ish mentalities.

The gaming community is far broader and contains people from every walk of life - I think that's why they resisted so quickly and easily.

I can see WHY each group reacted differently and what it really tells me is that nerds should not really be allowed to lead anything.
 I like your analysis!

Very good analogy there, helps explain the situation, except IMO it's too ZQ-focused. (However that does help facilitate the analogizing). That said, see my next post, below.

So I said that the article at Jack's link above was too ZQ-focused, then I turn around & present the article below, about the legality of ZQ's gag order on Gjoni. Some will find it an interesting read, as I did - for me, more as a general point about free speech & legal limits on attempts to curtail it than about the specific situation/case.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/vol ... plaintiff/

The quote below leaves out a lot that's in the original, including all the legal case citations (cases that have some sort of similarity on at least some aspect, where the ruling could be pertinent to this case) and a bunch of legal argument.

Volokh explains early on in the article why he refers to ZQ/CV as "Van Valkerburg" even though that's a misspelling. All bolding & italics below are from the original; all ellipises are by me.
Eugene Volokh wrote:As many readers of this blog know, I’ve long been interested in how criminal harassment laws and restraining order laws have been morphing from restricting unwanted speech to people into restricting speech about people. ...

... Friday, I filed a friend-of-the-court brief in another such case, Van Valkerburg v. Gjoni, now pending in Massachusetts appellate court. ...

In Van Valkerburg, a Massachusetts trial court issued an order providing that Gjoni is
Ordered not to post any further information about the [plaintiff] or her personal life on line or to encourage “hate mobs”
That order, we argue, is a clear violation of the First Amendment, for reasons we explain in the brief, which I’m also quoting below. A court can’t order someone to just stop saying anything about a person. Certain narrow categories of speech about people are constitutionally unprotected (such as true threats of violence, speech that is intended to and likely to incite people to imminent criminal conduct, and possibly certain kinds of speech that reveals highly private information). But this order goes vastly beyond any such narrow First Amendment exceptions.

...The post that led to the order is at the heart of the so-called “Gamergate” controversy, which some readers might be acquainted with. ...

The brief:

* * *

ARGUMENT

Broad injunctions, such as the one in this case, violate the First Amendment

The injunction in this case, barring the posting of all “information” about Ms. Van Valkerburg, is an unconstitutional prior restraint. “An injunction that forbids speech activities is a classic example of a prior restraint.” ...

Restricting speech about an ex-lover’s life unconstitutionally restricts people’s ability to speak about their own lives

Restricting Gjoni’s speech about Van Valkerburg also unconstitutionally restricts Gjoni’s speech about himself and his own life. The injunction, for instance, limits Gjoni’s ability to publicly discuss this litigation or the injunction itself. Gjoni cannot discuss his case without including some “information about” Van Valkerburg, including about her “personal life” — such as her name, their past romantic relationship, and the fact that she sought an injunction against him.

Likewise, when people condemn Gjoni online for allegedly acting badly by writing about Van Valkerburg, the injunction limits Gjoni from explaining why he thought his statements were fair and justified. And if Gjoni wants to tell his friends and acquaintances, in an online journal or on his Facebook page, how he feels about romantic relationships or why he is cautious about a new relationship, he cannot do so if the explanation would mention Van Valkerburg. ...

... True statements, and expressions of opinion about people, are fully protected ...

III. Allowing such broad injunctions would open the door to suppressing a broad range of speech

...

CONCLUSION

For these reasons, amici ask the Court to hold that the restraining order violates the First Amendment.

I think what should be noted is her family hired some of the best lawyers. Like many SJW's she comes from a very privileged family (which is why the Marxist switch from class to culture works so well for them) The judge was lazy and just caved to the legal weight. Gjoni didn't stand a chance. Social Justice is no justice at all.

Not just old ladies. Also PZ has fallen for onion-style hoaxes more than once. If something resonates with his preconceived ideas, all skepticism is shown the door.
Discocuntgate continues to rumble on (in my head). I didn't see Benson's post until after she had noticed it was a hoax, so I don't know if I too would have been fooled by it. But I think there were so many clues to its spoofiness any native English speaker should have spotted it was a joke quite easily. This shows a woeful lack of scepticism on her part, and when she did correct the post, her "Never mind" comment demonstrates she pays little heed to her having been shown to be so gullible. She offers no insight into why she was had, so we don't know if she never read the link she posted, taking just the image alone on trust, or whether she read the original article and every single one of the alarm bells contained within it flew over her head, or whether she placed too much trust in the way she was first tipped off that the image existed. I'm going to de-construct it from my England based perspective, others may find even more hidden jokes which I have overlooked.

Oafie titles her post 'Massive, I tell ya'. She finds it funny that a massive sign, including the word massive, has a massive 'cunt' typo in it. Nothing wrong with that, I do too. But then she proceeds to describe it as if it were a real event. Her link to the origin says "Cardiff Store Apologises For Offensive Shop Banner".

First clue. Which store? There's no store name in the image, who was apologising?
Next clue. It just looks a bit photoshoppy.

On to the original article.

http://www.walesoncraic.com/cardiff-sto ... op-banner/

She has clearly never seen the source website before. It's called WalesOnCraic. Craic is an Irish word. It means gossip or vibe. What's the craic? has a close similarity to What's happening? in meaning. It's not a Welsh word, or if it is it is no where near as common as the Irish version. It is pronounced 'crack'. The site name is "Wales On Crack".

We can be certain that Benson read the article's headline, because she quoted it in her post. Maybe she found that funny too, that a Cardiff store owner would have to apologise for such a massive typo. As I re-read the article I notice I had overlooked that in paragraph two we learn that the store name is "Massive Discounts". So the central point of WalesOnCraic's joke is that the store did not notice an offensive typo in the sign for their own store. This escaped me as I didn't expect a store to be called "Massive Discounts" in itself. Whether Benson thought that was the store name we will never know.

Paragraph three we find the store owner is called Jim Bellend. For those not familiar with English slang, the bellend is the end part of a penis. It would be extremely unlikely that it would be a Welsh person's surname.
Jim Bellend wrote:“I’ve always hammered home the importance of good spelling to my staff. Unfortunately, this didn’t extend to the twat who made my sign and posted it for all the world to see. It’s a massive embarrassment as I don’t have any discocunts in stock.”
Unlikely a store manager would call a member of staff a 'twat' when giving a quote to a newspaper. The store manager is oblivious to the problem of displaying "DISCOCUNTS" on the High Street, he is concerned that he can't stock them.

Lesley Longarms looks like a made up name, but is just possible.
Lesley Longarms wrote:“I popped in to get one for my husband as I’d rather he didn’t touch mine. I was vexed when they told me that they didn’t sell any. I left in tears so I went to Burger King and stuffed my face full of dead cow and fat.”
Lesley Longarms wanted to buy a discocunt for her husband because she would rather he didn't touch her discocunt. Hmm, that looks a little problematic to me. She was vexed when they said they didn't sell discocunts. Similar. The 'dead cow and fat' line also seems a bit unlikely when giving a quote to someone.
The shop has since replaced the banner.
Lovely little understated punchline from WalesOnCraic, or as Benson would say, after all that fuss, "Never mind."
So perhaps you have never heard of WalesOnCraic before, and you don't know about Royston Butterscotch's reputation as a fearsome journalist. Why not try the about us button?
WalesOnCraic is a spoof website for entertainment purposes only.
They are very open about their mission. One click and Benson could have settled any little niggling doubts. But she didn't have any, and it is even likely she didn't read past the headline of the article.

Benson prides herself in teasing apart every little nuance of other people's comments and statements. But when she gets tucked up like a kipper, reports spoof as fact, we are told to never mind. It is inconsequential that she cannot tell fact from fiction, even when the clues are pressed up against her nose.

The comments are enlightening too:
Rob wrote:Facepalm. How does that get through even the most cursory system?
Err, if you are talking about how Benson posted this, it is because she is extremely gullible.
Galloise Blonde wrote:FAKE. I’ve lived in Cardiff for over five years and I’ve never seen any shop resembling this. Plus it totally looks Photoshopped and comes from a stupid ‘satire’ site.
Her first reason is the unlikely "fact" that she knows every shop in Cardiff, at city with a population of over 300,000. Second, it looks photoshopped, which is better, but is not conclusive proof of anything. Finally she gets it, it's a "stupid 'satire' site". Not so stupid that they couldn't fool Benson mark you. If WalesOnCraic is stupid, Benson is even dumber by falling for it. Nice compliment for your blog host there.
Delft wrote:Are you sure this is real? Just judging by the other post titles I’d say this is a spoof site:

Helpline Opens To Help Women Addicted To Buying Cushions

New Series Of Rentaghost To Be Filmed In Bedlinog

Labour Party To Organise Piss-Up In A Brewery
Delft has his/her suspicions, but doesn't know how to check them.
Delft wrote:But worth a smile:

[Shopkeeper: ] …It’s a massive embarrassment as I don’t have any discocunts in stock.

Shopper Lesley Longarms said: “I popped in to get one for my husband as I’d rather he didn’t touch mine. I was vexed when they told me that they didn’t sell any.”
Delft has now noticed a smutty joke.
Caf wrote:This is satire, but I’ve worked in banner making and its actually not that implausible that a mistake can creep in. If it gets past the digital stage, people will likely never see the whole banner until its in place, and even then, they aren’t looking for spelling mistakes, so it may be a client that sees it first.
Caf gets it, but doesn't enlighten us as to where his/her opinion comes from.

Benson gets off on being a humourless old crone. Full marks to WalesOnCraic for exposing how she can be dumber than stupid. She could have used this as an opportunity to explain what she found funny and why she failed to spot the wind up. You have to suspect she is embarrassed for finding such a massive cunt joke funny. If she was just able to apply the analytic skills she applies to everyone else to herself we might end up with a much more likeable and insightful person.

About Ophelia getting fooled by the Discocunts story... it's Ophelia, it's happened to her many times before. She's impulsive, she wants her couple of lines of harrumphing online PRONTO, which means she's posted "nevermind" and "my bad" followups more times than she'd like to remember. She even once gave a live interview to a woo merchant because the name of his site was Skeptiko, so there's audio out there of one of her whoops moments.

The game really looks amazing, I loved the first Dragon Age too, way back when. The atmosphere is so important for me in any game, it helps me get lost in the world. The character interactions are fun too.
You can't romance Cole. Others, yes. My group usually contains Iron Bull and Dorian for might and magic. The interactions between them are...interesting. One about Bull taking charge of Dorian and riding him, or something like it. A bit unexpected. Not sure if anything will develop between them. Plus, the Iron Bull personal storyline with Dorian involved gets some interesting political/historical discussion that won't happen with others involved - I forgot they were on opposite sides in a war.

I didn't write it in the hope of changing her. I wrote it because something about it was stuck in my head. I've got a mild aversion to people laughing at me if I make an unintentional mistake, which I probably share with Benson. Writing helps to untangle the pieces. If I do a painting or write a poem, and show it the others, I start to understand a little better why I wanted to create it in the first place.

I've been finding Gjoni's ongoing legal battles really fascinating. I have not donated to them but the more traction he gets and the more this case seems to be representing/precedent setting, I do want to.
I presumed that's one reason she uses her alias - unless she legally changed her name - CvV just reeks of money and privilege.

She did end up having her name legally changed. I am not sure when that occurred, but she submitted the paper work to have it changed legally to Zoe Quinn.

It is a good thing Mommy & Daddy still love their porn daughter, otherwise she would not be able to afford the lawyers to dig her ass out of the messes she gets herself into.

I've got fantasies about being Cole's little sister in BDSM terms, lol, or girlfriend in vanillla terms. I don't think I have Iron Bull in my party yet, I do have Dorian, and he's set to be an um, Necromancer mage I think? I respecced him. I romanced Leliana in the first game playing as a lady mage, and in this game I'm trying to romance Sera, Cassandra, Cole, and Blackwall, just to see where it goes. Cole is so awesome though, too bad I can't romance him :( I think Dorian is hot, but I didn't bother with him because too stuck up for my tastes. Sera is intriguing in a friendly sort of way, but I don't feel much there beyond friends with benefits at the most. I mostly just want Cole for romance and sex, none of the rest; the rest are casuals and/or friends. Cole though? I'd fall madly in love with Cole if given the chance by him...

That's an intriguing bit of dialogue about Iron Bull and Dorian, is Iron Bull the big guy from Fallow's Mire that's got white hair and is really tall and muscular?? I'm not sure who that is. The Lesbian and Gay type dialogues should be interesting to hear, but I haven't picked up on much yet. I still wish I could romance Leliana like in the first game, and if I can't romance Cole well drats that sucks. Leliana is more attractive in this game than she was in the first one, but Cole is pretty much who I have my sights on, so it sucks to hear I can't romance him. That won't stop me from trying =~)

Early web with usenet groups full of hardcore porn? It looks like there is a correlation between easily accessed porn and reduced real life rapes. Maybe each wank done to rape porn is one less real rape taking place. There was also a study done a few years ago in some European countries where it used to be illegal to have porn and then became legal. The same correlation happened there too with higher porn and less rapes. It's totally opposite to the claims of radfems. They like to claim that porn encourages sexual crimes. The stats are not in their favour.

Very good analogy there, helps explain the situation, except IMO it's too ZQ-focused. (However that does help facilitate the analogizing). That said, see my next post, below.
Yeah, it was a bit too ZQ-focused, although the analogy certainly was a trigger point. The "Gamers Are Dead" articles were a much bigger part of it IMO, although certainly one facilitated the other. I think it's more that pretty much overnight a lot of people learned that many community leaders who they thought were all on the same team actually hated their guts and despised them. That created a lot of social panic. There have been other flareups of this, the condemnation of the criticism of the Mass Effect 3 ending, as an example. But this really blew it up.

And honestly, there's a larger social context.

When Volkah says that truth is a defense in these cases, I think it's important to note that in terms of how these Call-Out Culture things go, The Zoe Post was as backed up as it came. Tons of logs giving proof of his side of the story. And yet, this is the one that got shut down, and something like the whole Mattress Girl thing can go on with no issue (something IMO with negative evidence). I think that's a large part of the context that people see is that there's this MASSIVE double standard, and that's what they're reacting to.

At the time, quite frankly, what Gjoni did..well..that's part and parcel for groups like ShitRedditSays (probably the "root" of the problem in our society..remember that FTB/Atheism+ ended up modeled after them)..that's their entire way of doing things. Publicly call people out for the wrongdoings that they do.

Why is it different this time?

It's the double standard that scares the pants off of people.
