It's quite a combination - most were buying family but didn't release them (for tax reasons often) - which was more benevolent slavery, some bought and kept slaves in a nice way, some were mulattos who were more aligned with whites than blacks, some used them for capitalist fun because... well, slaves. Have a google.

The slavery in American was a leeeeetle more fucked up as well because - I don't know what it's called, but in America if you had children as a slave, those children became slaves, and were owned by your master. In a lot of other cultures the debt or mantle of slavery was YOURS - your children were free. (Historically repaying your debt as a slave, while your family are free, seems almost "fair" by the rather fucked up standards of the day.) I probably have to refresh my memory about how that worked and where it happened, though.

Looking outside of Sweden, Russia and their serfs has one or two things to say about white people being slavers and not slaves.The Russian serfdom were going on well into the 1800s. That's quite a few million white people who lived pretty much as slaves during the same time as the transatlantic slave trade was going on. A really bright move going up to white Russian immigrants living in the US and telling them that they should feel guilty for being white, when in fact chances are high they could easily trace their lineage to great-great-great-grandparents that were serfs.

Or for non-white slave owners, take a look at the Arabs, who through history, even in the 1800s, repeatedly enslaved both Africans, Asians and Europeans. Or the Chinese, owning other Chinese as slaves as far as 1949. Take look at how the African countries themselves held and sold slaves to the Europeans.

In speaking with Vacula, listening to his videos and reading his posts (etc.), I get the impression he is highly reasonable (and I am conscious of the bias where you are likely to find someone reasonable just because they agree with you, but as a dyed-in-the-wool skeptic, I am very careful to ensure I don't elevate people just because we've come to the same conclusions).

They have no information to suggest that Vacula will be unreasonable. All they have is people constantly using the mantra that Vacula and others are 'harassers'.

Nope, going to disagree there. First, I did mention that Tweet when I looked back and saw she was in a reply-to a couple hours previously. However, it was not a direct tweet.

There's a difference between tweeting directly at someone as an attempt as conversation and their being included in a tweet at someone else. Specifically a conversation with Greg Laden where they are setting the groundwork for the same bullshit stalking/harassing allegations they always make, even if they are the ones actually stalking and harassing according to their definition of it.

So, really, the only thing that changes is the time scale.

What remains the same is that I didn't have any communication while she went and started trading notes with Greg Laden -- after she claimed she wasn't basing her doxing behavior on Laden's input -- and then returned to tweet at me to stop tweeting her as if I had been tweeting her within some reasonable time frame.

She is still trying to frame her directly tweeting me, and being creepy in the process, as my harassing her.

With regards to the validity of debate, the Plussers are following the lead of PZ, who in turn is following the lead of Dawkins. Dawkins wrote once about the futility of debating creationists, making the points that creationists will run all over the debate, evading, Gish-galloping, outright lying, and monopolizing speaking time. Since the opponent barely has the opportunity to get a word in edgewise or address the rapid-fire non-salient points galloped their way by the creationist, the creationist can go to his own blog or other venue and proclaim that since his opponent had "no answers", victory was obviously theirs. Dawkins also made the point that debating creationists gave the creationists visibility and respect they simply did not deserve, given their dishonesty. All good points, and PZ later echoed Dawkins' sentiments.

However, now certain opponents of the free exchange of ideas (FtB, A+, Skepchick) use variations of these arguments to avoid discussing points and counterpoints with any who might have criticisms of what they do. And as you saw in that A+ thread, sometimes they'll completely dishonestly dismiss the whole concept of "debate" as worthless, as useless ego-stroking. No, that's not what Dawkins meant. But these FTB/A+/Skepchick morons can't afford to have their ideas debated in the marketplace of ideas, and they know it.

Because as we all know, centuries of honest debate has never accomplished anything, nor educated audiences, nor changed anything for the better. We're better off spouting ideology from our keyboards and banning everyone who doesn't agree that we're just the most special little cupcakes ever. Why, look at all we're accomplishing here! It makes sense for Dawkins to refuse to debate creationists because it would be a waste of his time that could be better spent doing other things. The argument has already been won. Other people with lower profile in the atheism community can debate creationists just as well as Dawkins could. It's an efficient division of labour.

For A+ we have a bunch of ideas that are nowhere near being as universally accepted as evolution, with the people proposing them saying that they are too busy and important to waste time justifying them to nonbelievers.

It's interesting, I can see there's a wide range of posters. Some are there because they don't seem to have anyone to talk to about personal things in their own spaces but are generally nice enough and try to stay out of pile-ups. Some are people actively doing social good and don't seem to notice the crazy - they seem to drop in and say "this is what I'm up to!" and then run out. The rest are... just fucking screamy fucks.

Sometimes I think that they're better off ignored, and then I remember that they advertise themselves as a place for oppressed and marginalised people. These people have no business calling that forum a safe space. It is like sticking a sign up in front of a lion enclosure saying "petting zoo". It is not hard to find their combined malice and ineptitude causing real harm to people who sign up there with good intentions e.g. telling rape victims they would be better off dead, doubting the possibility of male rape victims, inexplicable hostility to people outside the in-group.

It needs to have a reputation for being a cruel place, because that's the only thing that will keep the innocent away.

Well, fighter-bomber it probably wouldn't have been much of a dog-fighter, but with a theoretical top speed of 607mph (compared to a Spitfire's 378mph) it wouldn't have needed to be.

Alternate histories, counter-factuals as historians call them, are a favourite with me. So here goes:

I don't think a Nazi victory in Europe would have put Einstein in much danger. He emigrated to the US in 1933. The most likely course of events for a Nazi Europe would be Britain losing the Battle of Britain and being bombed and U-boat blockaded into an accommodation with Hitler by late 1940/early 1941.

The Third Reich's entire effort would then have been focussed on Operation Barbarossa resulting in the defeat of the Red Army by late 1941/early 1942. Industrialised Western Russia would become part of the Greater Reich, with Nazi occupation forces facing a long-running campaign against Russian nationalist partizans.

The US would never become involved in the European war. Focussing all their efforts in the Pacific in the wake of Pearl Harbor, they would have defeated and destroyed the Nipponese Empire by mid 1944, probably without recourse to nuclear weapons. Though these would still have been developed for longer term strategic reasons.

Leaderless, the British Empire would have drifted apart, with it's components variously declaring peaceful independence; collapsing into civil war and/or being obliged to make more or less unfavourable alliances with either the US or the Reich. No later than 1950 the Reich would have also developed nuclear weapons which, along with their superiority in missile (and possibly aircraft and radar) technology, would have lead to a vary uneasy Cold War.

Personally, other than to read, I don't bother with that place. I agree with you, but it's just one small example of the atrociousness that goes on there every day. I don't want to give them any excuses to claim victimhood and oppression by arguing with them or insulting them there. Posting there isn't productive, IMO.
