Ugh, just brought it up with an internet person that goes to A+ and shit... the whole "was he hitting on her in the first place" topic, saying if that (don't take this the wrong way) is really what he said, then she's just being sexist.. I get a bunch of shit about how I'm "missing the point" and "people responded horribly to her saying 'guys dont do that.' Then I tell him that IM THE ONE THAT BROUGHT IT UP so I cant be missing any god damn point. Then he responds with this: "Done with this. Forever. Don't give a shit about your stupid crusades anymore. I'm sick of you constantly obsessing over it to me." Then I point out that this is the FIRST TIME I BROUGHT THE TOPIC UP TO HIM. Then he says, "All of this.
Elevatorgate, pharyngula, Myers, A+" Then I said he can't just lump everything all in one just because it originates from the same general place...
Then he makes it about her "just wanting her personal boundaries" and saying "guys dont do that", deflecting from my point over and over... then says donotwanttotalkabout this over and over..
Could this be cognitive dissonance?

Just catching up (jesus this thread moves quickly)...
Anyone noticed how Thunderf00t was careful to say "'feminism'" (in scare-quotes) rather than "feminism" (without quotes) - and draw attention to this point at the top of the video's information section, and that everyone arguing against him is conveniently leaving off the quotes to make it look as if Thunderf00t is arguing against feminism itself?
TBH Thunderf00t should have expected them to do this and have been a bit more careful. Like how Dawkins has to be careful about creationist quote-mining.

I loving the fuck right out of the Dresden files series. I'm not sure if it fits the criteria, as there's a pretty deep mythology to get into (and the last few books are extremely tightly linked together), but it was easy enough for me to get into the series more than half-way through.

Shrug. Good's up to the reader. I like Cussler and The Destroyer, because it's mindless fun. Formulaic, but fun. Nice quick reads, and entertaining. Diane's a good writer who as much as possible in a series about wizards, respects her science. She's written some of the best Star Trek stuff out there, and if you watched a cartoon in the 90s, she probably wrote one of the scripts.
Some people love Dune. I can't see how. But they like so good for them.

Most of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels can be read independently, and order is (relatively) unimportant. There are some diagrams for suggested reading order for say, the Death novels or the Witches novels, but I generally ignore them. China Miéville's Bas Lag novels can also be read in any order.

LMAO. Good point.
Every time I read the series, every book, it's "hermione bails harry out yet again."
And don't forget, the ginger got her in the end!! (Ooh-er, missus!)

Hello all,
Just posted in the personal details section, but figured I'd add part of it here, as it includes some opinion on the whole situation in the community:
When I first encountered the whole elevatorgate fiasco, I kind of thought that, first of all, what Rebecca initially said (i.e. guys, don't do that) wasn't too unreasonable. However, I also chuckled at what Richard Dawkins wrote in reply, because I think he was making a really good point about the harmlessness of asking someone for coffee, no matter what the time of day, ESPECIALLY since when she refused the guy seemed to just let it go. Anyways, even if you could say that Dawkins was being perhaps a little tactless, I could also hear the sarcasm and dry wit he has in his words. I don't think he meant any harm.
However, the reaction that ensued and the culture war that has erupted inside the skeptic/atheist movement is absolutely apalling. True skepticism and reason has fallen by the wayside on one side of the battle, and now people who are really trying to achieve equality and be advocates for the rights of all humans are having their reputations tarnished. It's depressing, but I'm glad I found the slymepit as a result of listening to ReapSowRadio.
As for the feminism issue, the definition of it is really about achieving equality for women, which means equal. There are still plenty of problems with sexism towards women in the world, and I'd even venture to say that there is plenty more problems than there are with prejudice towards men.
I think one thing that we have to keep in mind is that as we get closer to equality, not only with rights be equally recognized, but each subgroup of the population will start to experience a more balanced amount of prejudice. For men, this would mean an increase, for women, a decrease, and so on. Perhaps as we get closer and closer to some sort of equilibrium (and I'm not sure we're there yet) we might do good to abandon the term feminist, and maybe even atheist (was Sam Harris right?), in order for all of us to adopt something like "humanist."
As it stands now, though, I am a feminist as it is traditionally defined. I want equality between the sexes. Equal rights. But I also want equality between all genders, races, cultures, you name it, and as we approach our goals for each of these groups, let's hope that we can all realize that we're all part of the biggest in-group: humanity itself.
Cheers!

Knock yourself out. This is the only forum where regular users can't start threads.
Shit. I constantly forget there are other forums on this board. Probably a good thing as I can barely keep up with just this one.

mistermack's comment that was hidden in the
Jen McCreight has moved past Internet atheism thread at a+ forum & for which he received 5th temp-ban:

I'm surprised that she has just tweeted a couple of comments, rather than a fuller account of what she means.
But maybe she thinks short is better.
Mod edit: Hidden for pulling from Arguments to Avoid [ Show ]
The trouble is, there is an atmosphere at the moment where one post can start a hate campaign that never stops.
Nobody's allowed to fuck up any more. Every word is picked over, analysed, bent, misinterpreted, and held againt you for ever. Or fervently supported by others no matter what. When all it was was a bit of chatter that people originally gave very little importance to.
Like the elevator thing. Or Dawkins on various stuff. It's throwaway stuff that takes on a life of it's own.
In other news, Jesus has just tweeted that he's moved on from Christianity.
He apparently wrote " all I said was love thy neighbour, I didn't expect people to start killing each other over it!".
kassiane adds later:
People who identify as feminists are not the only people in support of women's rights/gender equality. Womanists come immediately to mind as another group. Feminism kind of has a history of being pretty yuck with the intersectionality.
ceepolk adds a bit after that:
I don't support feminism because it's wildly racist and very very often cissexist and sex-negative, not to mention classist and colonialist
I'm hanging out with womanists instead.
you've never heard of womanists? I practiced my surprised face in the mirror for occasions like this
1) "Every word is picked over, analysed, bent, misinterpreted, and held againt you for ever. Or fervently supported by others no matter what." says the guy whose every word is picked over, hidden, & for which he is repeatedly temp-banned
2) another schism! "feminism" is
so 2012. Here comes "womanism", get ready to climb onboard or be left behind....

I have to say that watching those Portlandia clips makes me want to gouge out my eyeballs with the handcrafted Oregon myrtlewood salad servers, and eat them from a recycled glass bowl filled with Nancy's Organic Yogurt and sustainably harvested blackberries.

Noelplum just referred to Nerd of Redhead as a 'fucking idiot'. #112
Love it...
I did stir some shit wrt Nerd, but Nerd is a fucking idiot. Nerd actually holds the record for the most insane response i have ever received on the internet after rejecting, as evidence that i have vocally denounced online threats (to people like RW), a video of me vocally denouncing online threats, and further informing me that only peer reviewed journals count as evidence (that i had vocally denounced online threats)!!
I reallly dislike Nerd. He is such a complete and total ass. I notice you guys even have a thread dedicated to him. He is such a hateful, bitter, hostile fuckwit. Go noel!!!!
Does anyone know what the "om trolls" part of Nerd's name is in reference to?

Gumby, are you talking about my cat?
If so, I would prefer if you used the term spastic
retard

A cutie indeed!
The kitty in my avatar was That One Special Pet. Named Gumby, of course. Unfortunately I had to put her to sleep last year (lymphoma).
Here's my new-ish cat Stimpy, and she is truly a super spastic retard.

So, if Eucliwood gets any more annoying to me, I'm going to set the post flood limit to 1800 seconds (30 minutes).
Then exempt EVERYONE else from the flood limit.

Five kind of sucked balls. The first half was naught but a recap, and the rest was "Harry is a great whining tit, and anyway, Hermione carries his ass on her back for the entire series."
Well, Emma Watson
could carry my arse on her back any time. What a hottie!
What do you want to do? Ride her like some sort of fucking sled?

Can't tell if sarcastic, but you have no idea how spot on you are. At least in terms of pre-Reagan libertarianism and LaVey style Satanism.
No sarcasm on my part. And yes, was actually thinking about LaVey's Satanism "You are your own god" and "don't fuck with other people unless they fuck with you" philosophy.
