Hair is always dead. It's just dead carotene. There's nothing you can do to it that can affect the hair follicle unless you burn it off with a laser or acid.

Then, there was the invasion of the Numb Yoyos, a culty branch of buddhism that recruited from among us. I lost a couple of friends to that one. I call them the Numb Yoyos because their one-sentence-over-and-over chant sounded kind of like that phrase. I think their type of buddhism was called Nicherin Shoshu or something like that. I could google or wiki it, but I'm feeling lazy. ReGretavirus acting up. :)
I really despise mission creep. They take footholds every time someone is scared of not being PC enough and lets them in the door. I no longer think of FTB as an atheist blogging spot. It's almost all pure radfeminism. Any atheism is accidental these days.
Back in the Bush years, every time I participated in a protest I somehow always ended up next to the Free Mumia assholes.
I've heard some parts of the Occupy movement were taken over by feminists and that they forced some women only areas on them. I think I need to do an anagram video of 'mission creep', which conveniently contains the word 'penis' in it. That might be useful in regards to feminist mission creep. :)

I remember a post on OB's blog from back in August - a commenter was shitting all over us westerners for having the gall to refer to FGM as 'female genital mutilation.
See, we should have known, even though such information was not available to us, that use of the word 'mutilation' upsets indigenous African people, and that we should use the term 'cutting' instead.
Yeah, cuz you know, all those African villagers who read FTB and the Slymepit et al. will be so fucking offended at our choice of terminology!!
Srsly, wtf is wrong with these people???? And she was really really really angry and hostile about this!
Boggles the mind it does.
psychological distance from the horrific reality of a practice, is how otherwise rational people can commit atrocities, with FGM, add another layer to that, they have been convinced they are doing the right thing out of love for their daughters.
"Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities" -Voltaire
One cannot march into a village and shout accusations of mutilation and abuse if they would like to see an end to FGM.
PC police and SJW do not understand the nuance of this. The reason not to offend them about FGM is so they don't see you as attacking their culture and their love towards their family, and that is the only way to have a chance at having a calm, rational discussion that may lead to a few women seeing FGM very differently, and they will discuss that with others, and hopefully the people of that culture will decide for themselves to stop.
Empowerment is the only solution.
This does not mean FGM should be treated with respect when speaking about it to those that agree it is barbaric, and certainly not to those who have no idea what it entails.
That only perpetuates the view that the rumours are exaggerated, and it isn't that bad, which makes less people interested in stopping it.
Is there anything the PC police and SJWs do that actually helps instead of hinders?
I wanted to discuss this here with Skep Tickle quite a while ago when she mentioned foot binding and why it is no longer practiced. The psychology of why things like this are accepted to begin with, and the psychology of how to end the practice it is quite interesting.
You are correct and I agree with your viewpoint. I was only complaining about the fact that the person on OB's blog (she worked for the WHO) was seriously -hostile- about the fact that we used the term 'mutilation' when talking amongst ourselves on various blogs. Seeing as how we are not directly interacting with the people who practise FGM, I would suspect that it is acceptable to use the term 'FGM' amongst ourselves. If I was over in Africa trying to change things, well duh, I would work my damndest to use the right words and not offend people.
Regarding Matt Dillahunty, a couple points:
1) he seems to be quite the prima donna. I caught the start of a TAE show once, where he was yelling and screaming at the production crew, and bragging about how "I am a famous atheist, any show would love to have me, so don't be so incompetent."
and
2) either it was TAE or the non-prophets, I cannot remember, but I think it might have been Russell Glasser who said that it was entirely -acceptable- to mutilate baby boys. He sincerely felt that as long as you're a baby, your parents have the right to mutilate you. My jaw dropped. What utter bullshit. In case you haven't guessed, yeah, I am against male circumcision too.
--------------------------------
And lastly, sorry for making heads explode with my elevatorgate question. I got it all sorted a few pages back with Eucliwood. In case anyone missed, I explained that I was essentially trying to give RWatson the benefit of the doubt. To be charitable. And the subtext, from what I had read, is that the the Elevator-Guy was in fact some sort of creep. I imagined him standing over her, breathing heavily on her hair, and asking for coffee, in the sleaziest way possible. Now, under -those- circumstances, her reaction would seem perfectly reasonable.
Someone made the point that where RWatson went wrong was that in assuming every woman would react the same way. In assuming that all men are all creeps all the time, and that all women are all scared and cowering, all the time. As an example, I love the show 'Citizen Radio'. But even they, imo, go a bit too far with the whole 'rape culture' thing. The woman on the show was horribly offended when a New York cabdriver (or something) made a comment that he 'loved her'. And that this was just another example of rape culture rearing its ugly head.
The way women are treated in India = rape culture. Being harassed for personal info, being groped, having upskirt pics taken = example of rape culture. A guy cat-calling or saying 'you're hot' is not rape culture, imo.[/spoiler]
Before anyone jumps on me for my thoughts about what and what doesn't constitute rape culture, please bear in mind that I try really hard to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I would like to learn from people, and to consider everyone's viewpoint, before making blanket statements. My views are -never- set in stone. I honestly just want to understand the world better!
I can't guarantee that no one will try to dogpile you or call you names (please remember that "fuck you" is a term of endearment to some), but if we haven't banned oolon then we won't ban you, so you can always just call them names back (:

BTW, could someone explain to me the other side of the story in regards to Rebecca Watson and Elevator Gate? Over the past few months I have been an infrequent reader of FTB - and I just tuned out the drama because it was stupid and did not interest me. But I would like to know. The FTBers keep saying that a guy was really creepy in the elevator, and that Rebecca Watson was like 'hey dudes, don't be creepy in elevators' and then apparently the entire blogosphere erupted with people making misogynistic death threats against Rebecca Watson because she said something so reasonable.
The thing is, what she said -is- reasonable. And the reaction to that seems way over the top. So my question is, what details, if any, are the A+ people glossing over in this episode? I cannot see the rest of the atheist community being THIS hateful and THIS misogynistic over something as non-controversial as 'hey, don't hit on chicks in confined spaces it's scary'.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Seems the counter-argument is that Watson was certainly entitled to feel uncomfortable about the experience and even entitled to say “guys, don’t do thatâ€, but that she was essentially being egregiously autocratic for insisting, in effect, that her standards should apply to everyone else. Particularly since any number of women have indicated that they are not uncomfortable in those situations and are perfectly capable of dealing with them without turning into quivering blobs of jelly ….
YMMV ….
thank you, Steersman
I asked about every woman I'm friends with about EG at the time, and universally, the answer started with "It Depends".
Conditions on that were things like:
was he polite?
was he slurringly drunk?
was the hotel generally not skeevy?
was he cute?
did he have an irish accent? (this one was evidently important, as in some cases, he'd have been getting blown in the elevator if he had the accent working and was even mildly attractive)
etc. Unsurprisingly, there wasn't some universal accord on this. They all agreed everyone has the right to their own reaction, and an elevator is probably not the best place to do that, but it wasn't that bad.

Yes, it was largely occupied by people who bought into Myer's "fucktoys" decree but then got banned from the safespace A+ forum. Eventually even the guy who set it up got banned from A+ for being "racist" (stating that he was "colorblind" regarding race). The "free" forum of A+ is pretty much dead (notice the last update date):
I recall that PZ had to make a post on Pharyngula warning his members to stop making death threats against a poster named SteveOr.

I was cursed at, shouted at, and accused of being a rapist, and I was the one harassing people? *facepalm*
Sounds par for the course unfortunately. If you're lucky someone will edit your comments to be things like "Bitches ain't shit!"

Ha, that happened to me somewhere else once (fuck if I can find the link now). I was the "most disappointed dudebro!!!", cause I dared to suggest that the phrase "wife aggro" wasn't a big deal.

I don't get why Thunderchrist bothers in the first place. It's not like he'll ever score a girl. not even on a convention where he's actually something of a deal, haha. Joking aside. I don't agree with banning "looking hot" at a convention but if they wanna do so, fine. I'll ridicule it but it's their right to be that way. Secondly, Tfails tactics have never changed in ages. Still nit-picking and misrepresenting.
TF00t isn't hot enough to get a lady and women who look hot should be ridiculed........
Another epic win for feminism.
I'm guessing this person didn't know about the woman who was originally featured in his "MISOGYNIST!!!" blog post at FtB. Another thing is, IIRC he had a fling with FactVsReligion several years ago.
Why is it that "sex positive" people are the most likely to shame someone for their (lack of) sex lives?

Speaking from the same perspective, I think everyone at a party would experience attraction to Matt.
I am speaking of gravitational pull, of course.

Because their "sex-positivity" is basically a sad, desperate plea for someone to shag their fugly ass.

I think the Google Hangout video is determined by google, not Pee Zed. In other words, it's automatic.

I'm going to be very fair here and say my original comment really wasn't meant to be about his size (I should have rethought "galumphing"). Rather I had this vision in my head of him trying to "get busy" all the while walking around talking to the vid cam in his cell phone, blithely stepping on people along the way.

I'll be appearing on an upcoming episode of the Freedom From Religion Foundation's "Freethought Radio" concerning the vandalized FFRF banner in Wilkes-Barre. I'll be recording today and will link the episode once it is available.
The banner still hasn't been restored, by the way...and it's about two weeks after the vandalism.

Submor, to ischemgeek, on the A+ forums:
If you continue on like this without regarding the substance of the arguments put down here, I will be able to draw no conclusion other than that you are here simply to uncritically repeat your talking points. If you are unwilling to engage in honest, good-faith conversation, you will be given a vacation from the forums.
Looks like he's about to get banned. He's got over 1300 posts. A+ is cutting off its own head.

Yes and no. Google uses audio to bring the speaker to the main screen, if you set it that way. Otherwise it is a manual process.

To be fair "wife aggro" is kind of a big deal, you can lose raiders that way. We found you could reduce the impact if you had the partner raid too, or if all the critical roles were played by people who's partner was present.
Al, I reject your depiction of the slyme as green.
It should be clear to anyone with a brain that the slyme is *neon orange*. :snooty:

Got this from PC World
Video interface and quality: While you’re in a hangout, whoever has the dominant voice will enter the large main video window, and all the other video broadcasts will appear in smaller video stream windows at the bottom. This arrangement, of course, assumes that every hangout will remain civil. If two people speak at the same time, with nearly equal tone and volume, Google Hangouts still chooses one to be front and center in the chat. Regardless, members of the hangout can manually adjust the layout by clicking on any of the smaller video broadcasts to see that stream in the largest window instead.

I'm not terrifically diplomatic.
Yes, nasty, arrogant British Empire. No good came of it you know!
On the matter of the whole quibble about FGM/male circumcision. The problem with the FTB/SJWs is that they don't seem to understand what an ethical principle is. If you throw someone, who has committed no crime, into jail for a day, that's wrong. If you throw them in jail for life, it's wrong. No-one with any sense would claim they're equally severe, but they are equally wrong, because they are both violations of the same ethical principle.
Similarly, no-one with any sense is claiming that a (non-medical) male circumcision, carried out in a Western hospital is as physically or emotionally traumatising as a full infibulation, carried out with an old razor blade, in some African village. However, they are equally wrong, because they are both violations of the recipients bodily autonomy. The additional pain and suffering of Third World FGM victims is a further wrong, to be considered in addition to the first, not instead of it.
As a last thing, this sort of leads to Dawkins' 'Dear Muslima' response to Elevatorgate. It's important to remember that Dawkins was not trying to say: "EGate was bad, but hey other people have it worse." Such appeal to more severe problems is a wonky argument at best. Someone always has it worse. Should we therefore do nothing about any problem until we're sure it's the absolute worst?
Dawkins' 'Dear Muslima' seemed to be an example of this. So, at the time, he made a second post on Pharyngula to clarify that he wasn't making that argument. What he was saying was that EGate was "zero bad", not a lesser problem, but not a problem at all.
Much later PeeZus posted some cartoon of an ideal feminist world where a man approaches a woman, is turned down, and simply goes on his way without fuss. As someone here pointed out, that is exactly what Elevator Guy did! More to the point, his approach - as recounted by Becky in her original video - was prefixed by a reassurance, complimentary and polite. This was not the terrifying act of a predatory beast. That wilful mis-interpretation came later.

That's because you are a normal person who has a normal worldview. Setar and the rest of the A+ live in a made-up world where a Negative-Privilege Coefficient puts them higher in the pecking order. So they cling to anything that lowers their privilege, even if that means being strangely happy about having Social Anxiety.
And he has to milk his anxiety for everything it's worth, since he's not black, female or trans, which would put him way up there at the top of the A+ shit-riarcky with almost no effort.
I have to thank my parents for my upbringing. They went to tuff shit growing up and taught us to be self-reliant and responsible people.
He's milking SOCIAL ANXIETY? That's it?! Wow. "Oh, everyone without this phobia is so privileged hurdur." Funny, I have that issue as well as two of the others you listed and that didn't help me there at all. Phooey. They didn't know about two of them until the end though.
I must say, it can be a privilege issue if people refuse to accept that some people have serious issues when it comes to needless presentation projects, forcing people to socialize at work (but there are other jobs or bosses that do not do this - plenty) that do more damage than good, but really in general... it's not a marginalized-people's issue. Some people even get compensation for it. The IfYouReallyNeedOutOfThisTask card.
What sort of social anxiety does he have, anyway? Is it generalized? Specific to a few situations? Presentation (speaking in front of)-specific? I know that social situational and generalized anxiety can be helped, step by step, even if you don't think it can be. presentational is a total life killer so far though. I won't go into detail.
I would like to help Setar out, so he can stop using & abusing his anxiety for some A+ heirarchy status. Disgusting. So, Setar, come on down... I have some experience in helping with that issue you love having. I'll cure it. Muwhahahaha.

A happy new year to all at the pit.
The hostility from these fools seems, to me, to come from a pathological cognitive dissonance (at least, there are several other signifiers of mental instability over and above the self confessed whining of their "poor me" competitions) in which they are perfectly aware of their hostile, obnoxious anti-social behaviours, but at the same time are convinced their ideology that such behaviour is not a symptom of their own unstable personalities, in fact they are victims of The Rapeocracy. As such they absolve themselves of such behaviour instead projecting it outwards towards those who have not been "saved" by belief in their personal faith must be motivated by the hostile obnoxious and anti-social as they know themselves to be.
