Periodic Table of Swearing
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Silverman has done a "party political broadcast" which is being touted by the skepbabes et al. In it silverman says:
"I see hatred and threats of violence directed at our sisters-in-arms to be reprehensible, serving no purpose other than to hurt and intimidate valuable allies."
But where the fuck are these threats?! Silverman propogating the narrative. Is he talking about youtube nonsense, who the fuck knows!? Perhaps in fact silverman is talking anout the multitude of threats that originate from the fftb cult, like laden, no matter the baboons are heralding it as Silverman buying into their bullshit in the midst of a growing calling out of their bullshit, someone needs to pull silverman off his political stump and make him say something detailed instead of soundbites.
Hey silverman what's your position on the fabrication of crisis which umdermines movement cohesion with non issues, in order to push a fringe agenda that enhances the public exposure and therefore income of its mouthpieces?

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Apparently, examples of these threats/harassment/hate thingys that Amy has to deal with on a daily basis are given here (after the obligatory trigger warning, of course): http://skepchick.org/2012/07/ask-surly- ... with-hate/Za-zen wrote:Silverman has done a "party political broadcast" which is being touted by the skepbabes et al. Yes, Pappa's joke on Ratz, and that tweet about setting herself on fire. Please note that according to the baboons, the latter isn't usually a threat because, as with 'go fuck yourself with a rusty knife', it's not a threat if you're telling someone to do it to themselves. I know. Go figure.
Interestingly, Amy didn't mention anything about harassing t-shirts, harassing jewelry and harassing satirical songs. Given her reaction at TAM, one would have thought these would be at the top of her list. Oh well.
As for Silverman - I read his statement as this:
'What's this? Skept...chicks? Who? Oh, they want me to say something about how bad hatred and harassment is. Ummm...secretary? Yeah, can you just fire off a quick piece for me? Just something along the lines, 'yeah, threats against women are bad, blah blah'; you know the sort of thing. Yeah? Okay. Right - back to Minesweeper...'
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
@ GenerallyFading - Those religious paintings are hilarious! I especially like the ones in which Jesus repeatedly compromises the sterile field in the OR.
My childhood version of "monsters under the bed" were muttering gnomes that lived in a pond under the wooden floorboards of the drafty two-story house my parents rented in Minneapolis. They were called Rightos and their heads looked exactly like the typical bearded white hippie version of Jesus, so popular in the US in the 1960s and 1970s. But because they lived in a pond under the floorboards and were stunted in height, and because I had a lot of picture books about aquatic animals and plants, their hair and beards were constantly wet and dripping with water weeds, freshwater snails, dragonfly larvae, and pond scum.
I think this childhood delusion stemmed from a picture of Jesus atop my dresser (probably the grandparents thought it was suitable decor for a child's room), which my mom had accidentally knocked off such that the frame cracked. I was convinced that my mom was doomed to suffer God's wrath for breaking the picture, and burst into tears. The Rightos moved under the floorboards soon afterwards.
Bastards.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Ah - to be fair, Amy did mention the harassing t-shirts in the thread below:
The response directly below is priceless:A lot of the online threats and harassment are anonymous, yes. But at TAM I dealt with a lot of real people who, while they never touched me, they did things like make fake Surly-Ramics necklaces with words on them that mocked things I said online and there were actual people live blogging from the event saying things like I was part of an ‘axis’ that was trying to destroy the event and people celebrating T-shirts that served to make me feel like an outcast and people singing songs that said we ‘should pull the sticks out of our ass’ etc. So sometimes, yes, I have to deal with actual people IRL. None of those in real life trolls at TAM got within 10ft of me though (that I am aware of) and it’s not often that I encounter those types of people as I do my best not to be around that group.
You're telling me! Only today, I opened a bad of sliced bread, and you'll never guess what? some of the slices had only been partially sliced! Shocking!Shockingly low. To misuse your art to condemn you? Vile.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
David Silverman's comment:
Sure, fine, whatever. No problem. I'm not seeing threats of violence, though.
Who are these 'sisters-in-arms' who are activists and receiving threats?
I have seen Ahlquist produce threats...but that's about it...and it's certainly not what the Freethought Bloggers or the Skepchicks are talking about.
I've also seen hate mail from Annie Laurie Gaylor...but that's not what they're talking about either.
Why limit to sisters? Why not 'people?'
Which threats? I am yet to see one.As a Humanist, I see these threats as base and detestable. They have no redeeming value and will raise no awareness, solve no problems, and hurt those who should be friends.
As a long term activist, I see hatred and threats of violence directed at our sisters-in-arms to be reprehensible, serving no purpose other than to hurt and intimidate valuable allies.

Why even mention this? What does race or gender have to do with anything here?As a white man, I know that so much of this hate comes from people who look like me — but they’re nothing like me where it counts.
I don't see that these policies are needed although, more recently, I have been considering whether they should be implemented for legal reasons. I don't see how these policies will limit bad behavior, either. Perhaps people may feel more safe (whether or not this is warranted especially considering there does not seem to be a [huge] problem to begin with.As the leader of a national atheist organization, I have implemented harassment policies to minimize such irrational, hateful, and counterproductive behavior wherever my authority allows.
What is this war and how is this war being lost?We have a war to win, and we won’t win until we can look forward, without watching our own backs. American Atheists stands by all its members, supporters, and allies, and we will not tolerate hate directed at any of us. Period.

Horace again
PZ
I think that the behaviour of the pharyngulate reinforces PZs behaviour and vice versa. My impression is that Pharyngula has become more intolerant over time.
When I started posting on Pharyngula there were frequent online fights with creationists, now they almost never take them on partly because the creationists don't waste their time posting there, partly because PZ is now more concerned with feminism. These days they spend much more time raging at atheists who are not in line with them than christians or other believers.
The range of accepted opinion has narrowed, first you had to be an atheist, then a gnu atheist, then a feminist Gnu atheist. Many of the posters have become addicted to loosing their temper online and so more and more vitriol is expended on narrower differences of opinion.
I think the benefits of the internet are the opposite; you have a chance to argue with people whose views are completely different from yours who you would never meet in real life.

Justin - it looks to me that Silverman dashed this letter off as he would a memo.
Interesting that Ophelia says there's more to come - I'd laugh my tits off if the Skepchicks somehow got the support of Richard Dawkins. Volte face, much?
I'm curious as to what Watson must thinking, considering all recent events seem to be centred around Amy. Must burn a little for her, at least. By virtue of her hysterics, Amy seems to have become quite the prominent voice within her community in latter days. If it goes on, what's the betting of a power struggle between them, I wonder?

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Last year Miranda Hale commented on her blog that American Atheists was the atheist version of the Catholic League, and I'm inclined to agree. Silverman and PZ, made a name for themselves out of being insensitive loudmouths, and for either one to preach to anyone about the need for greater sensitivity is a joke. (this is the article I'm referring to http://mirandaceleste.net/2011/09/27/am ... o-atheism/)

Thats why I mentioned crackergate and Expelled. From my perspective, he started going downhill four years ago, well actually started earlier than that, but 2008 was when it started to pick up speed, because it started going to his head.Dilurk wrote:Well, it may have had nothing to do with his heart surgery but that does seem a convenient timestamp for when he seemed to really get worse.

That is not happening (I guess, unless Dawkins gets brain damage as the result of a cardiac episode, or as the result of bypass surgery...).Tigzy wrote:I'd laugh my tits off if the Skepchicks somehow got the support of Richard Dawkins. Volte face, much?
A BIG THANK YOU to James Onan for that post. I *know* that took a lot of time to pull together. I really appreciate it :)
And my shuffle reminded me of one of my favorite songs about stalking-- a girl who looks like a boy stalking a girl who really looks like a boy. The video never got finished, but the song is fun:

skepchick website isn't loading for me ... anyone else having problems accessing it?
I watched the FTB discussion on atheism and parenting last night (I know, I know) - in large part because some friends of mine are struggling with these issues for their young children. Their kids attend school in a rural/small town district, and are probably one of the few godless families in the whole county.
Anyway, I thought PZ was quite reasonable and made some of the best points about raising godless kids. More like the pre-Crackergate PZ that I remember. Kylie Sturgess was also quite good, and had some excellent book recommendations - apparently she teaches children, not sure whether she has any of her own. No idea why Benson was part of the discussion. Clueless as usual. ::eye roll::
I was beginning to wonder about philosophers, until I started reading Žižek. My kind of philosopher, so far at least.

Regarding Jean/DJ/anyone else looking down their noses at The Pit crew.
Ive been thinking about this and writing/deleting rants.
It boils down to: Show me a way that works, and I will happily support it.
But, thus far, Jean/DJ/etc approach-- be nice, address the arguments, stiff upper lip-- it has gotten them nowhere.
*Nowhere*.
While The Pit Crew has had a wonderful time having real discussions with our real personalities/quirks, nailed the FTBullies to the wall over and over and over and over and over, shown the courage to speak up when no one else was speaking up (despite being attacked on personal and professional levels, relentlessly), and compassion reaching out to other victims not part of Our Group, and so on.
And if they had such a great way to approach this issue, where were they a year ago? Im happy for reinforcements, genuinely, but smugly acting like they were part of overturning FTBullies all along, after the job is basically already done? I dont think so.
This feels like the same crap I have been dealing with from others fighting against Creationism/anti-vaxers/global warming deniers-- Youve got folks who look at the situation 'academically', telling those of us who have to deal with Creationists/anti-vaxers/GWD on the ground, in real life, every day How To Do It Right, when their own sterile approach gets them *no where*, and us stupid grunts actually get shit done.
Frankly, I dont care about DJ/Jean/anyones 'approval'. The fact is, The Pit Crew has been there for people who needed it. If a few us us occasionally using bad wurds negates that, well, fuck you.

Abbie, I for one will be forever grateful for you standing up to the Baboon bullies alone, ie actually calling them out and letting an opposing POV to be heard (via ERV).
Actually, I think there are a lot of people in the skeptic/Atheist community who are glad you did what you did, Abbie, including many of the well-known leaders. Even if they are a bit shy in saying so.

I went to 'Lousy Canuck's' blog calling for civility and I was called a 'tone troll.'
I was then called a "vacuous shitbag troll" and this was, at the time, parroted by Stephanie Zvan (and now it's being used by PZ).
Reach out to Ophelia as she asked? That's me "trolling" and "insulting."
Invite Ophelia on my podcast following her being angry with treatment she received? Can't have that.
As one of my favorite bands, Blind Guardian, says, "It goes on and on and on and on" (bonus points if you know the song without cheating!)
This, though, I don't think, should be an 'everything goes' mentality which some atheists seem to take concerning religion (Well, they don't listen when we played nice, so offend the shit out of them!).
I'd propose -- and this is just me -- to attack ideas and not persons. Name-calling here and there...whatever. Others do it, I don't. So be it. Everyone has their approach. Either way, I've been a fan of modeling good discourse in that if you want others to have good behavior, the way forward is to model good behavior.
Carry on.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
The joyless mannequins of the baboon boards thirst for order. See how quick they are to pigeonhole, to categorize, to 'out' and identify those who they perceive to be their enemies. That which they cannot label and identify confounds them; therefore whatever label they hastily put on it just looks stupid.
Take any approach you like, I say. Polite or vulgar; whatever suits you. Don't feel the need to be the same as anyone else in your approach. Do that, and you only make it easier for them.

If you see this, James – fuck you. Am I glad that Ivanoff has been talking about me that way for a year, so that I can “milk†it? No. Fuck you.

PS - As long as Opheliar continues to defend and support her dear friend Osama Greg Laden, anything she says about others will be dismissed.

Oh I know. James Onen has a new and very long post to say just that, among other things – I saw it via a pingback. James Onen! Of Freethought Kampala! That’s been possibly the most disappointing ex-friend in all this.
He once told me my efforts to promote Freethought Kampala got it noticed by the British Humanist Assoc and that’s why they invited him on a speaking tour to the UK – but now there he is explaining why it’s “just rhetoric†or some fucking thing when Ivanoff rants about kicking me in the cunt – and he has the fucking gall to say I’m “milking†it. If you see this, James – fuck you. Am I glad that Ivanoff has been talking about me that way for a year, so that I can “milk†it? No. Fuck you.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Benson is the Squirrel Nutkin of FTB. Weirdest of the weird.
I think the weirdest thing about her is that everything she writes on her blag is self-referential in some way, and always plays into her bizarre fixation with martyrdom and being persecuted. Even her so-called literary analysis posts eventually come around to that. I think I could find something positive -fundraising, humor, science writing, parenting, etc.- about the other FC5 and even about the Skepchicks, but not Benson.
And I don't hate anyone either. Not even the annoying philosopher I have to work with on the curriculum. Usually I just end up feeling sorry for people and how unhappy they must be.

Well, count me in as another old lady of 59 - ex-archaeologist, now writing and raising vegetables and chooks in the BC outback. Worked abroad for many years - Egypt, Sudan, Kuwait, Hong Kong - so have a fair idea of different regional flavours of gender and racial prejudice, and know how bloody good we have it here.Dilurk wrote:I'm an old lady of 59, with a grandson and another grandchild on the way.
