About the sexual harassment video: to clarify, the commenter on jref posted that link clearly with tongue in cheek. I personally had a hard time (ha) deciding whether the video was real or a hilarious parody.

See bunnygate. In short, people were upset that the religious gullible moron was a pink-colored bunny. PZ dismissed their concerns. It did not end well. I remember the thread at ERV had quite a laugh about it.

Misogyny alert!

sim in chain mail?

Btw - that is hard work. I've worked my own coat with steel, and while aluminum is easier, it's hard to get correct (if done by hand). Even if you have the rings manufactured, the rest is done by hand.

Damn - how did I mess up "swim"? Anyway, I forgot the Lulz part
I lied, they only makes bikini tops. You're still gonna have to wear a dragon hide or whatever for a bottom. Or -- OR -- nothing at all. I'm gonna vote nothing at all provided, you know, GIANT BUSH. One time I went to a nude beach and thought a lady was wearing a silver bikini bottom. NOPE, unshaven granny. She still had it.

I don't buy it. I wouldn't any claim re: sexual violence or harassment from those people at face value. Not after they tried to get their ex-boytoys and Mr. Monopod perma-banned from TAM. It's transparently clear that they have no problem using false accusations to further their agenda.

Individuals that have actually been victimized by sexual assault tend to be way less cavalier about discussing it than the skepchicks. Keep in mind it was Abbie's experience with an actual "for reals" stalker and P.Z.'s mansplaining to her that she didn't "get it" that led to the infamous "go fuck yourself" moment.

Not that I blame her. Working with LE I know that they get enough false alarms that they have a hard time figuring out what needs to be actually prosecuted.

Looks good to me. They have a link to locking down SSH, pay attention to those and especially authorized_keys.

Also do not run OpenBSD or any of the variants if you have any suspicions about the backdoor story being true.

With that said, you should also understand that this is coming from someone who many years ago, hung up his Internet Big Swinging Dick badge and never put it back on again.

PZ Myers - accommodationist

#2708

Post by Badger3k »

I don't see any damn reason for being accommodating to people who demand accommodation. Besides since when have atheist been accommodating of other people's boundaries. We tend to spend half our time poo pooing the most sacred values of religion. Are you saying we should accommodate sharia law or all the other religious wibble as well.

My robots.txt ought to block all the well-behaved bots. Since my domain has a Dynamic DNS IP address, a whois search for my domain returns a "no match for domain" message. As far as I can tell, nothing publicly accessible from my web server could be used to embarrass or "out" me.

I may need to implement further security measures just in case someone tries to attack the server remotely and potentially gain access to files outside my web server root directory. Besides these tips, I would appreciate any suggestions.
mod_security is your friend.

Also, just make sure you don't have any personal info on the server. A recursive 'grep' should help with that.

I'd be inclined to think that the majority - well okay, a major part - of that quoted group are genuine. I think the culture at FfTB is such that a certain type of rape victim might fall for the spiel that Pharyngula et al is a 'safe place' on the internet. Of course, I call it a spiel owing to PZs frequent posts on the subject of rape - thereby invoking a heated discussion which more often than not will descend into those typical cries of 'misogynist rape enabler' should one commentator happen to sidle away from the dogma a little. How healthy this can be for a genuinely vulnerable rape victim may be open to debate. I personally wouldn't take any chances. Which shows PZ to be not quite so attentive to the needs of rape victims as he believes. In fact, it's fucking pretty cynical. And just as cynical as both FfTB/Skeptchicks co-opting rape victims not as people, but as, in effect, rhetorical talismans.

Hence 'trophy rape victims'. A heartless term, perhaps, but one which I believe expresses my contempt for the cynicism of enthusiastically deploying real suffering to serve a spurious agenda.

I think there is a reason "people in leadership positions" aren't knocking on your door. Fucking poison.
Comments like that really annoy me. Anyone who has ever led a large organization knows one of the truisms of leadership is that you will never, ever please everyone. Oh, everyone has an opinion as to what you should do and will be more than happy to share that opinion with you. But, every opinion is different by degree. When you are in leadership, you have to make the best decision possible and, given that you will likely disappoint/piss off some non-zero number of people, you should be able to articulate exactly why you made that decision. It has been my experience that once you explain what your decision is and why you made it, most people can accept it even if they disagree with it. But, there is almost always one person who cannot step outside their own petty desires to try and see the big picture. Ophelia is that person.

If she doesn't like how the leadership of the atheist movement is conducting business, she is certainly welcome to get off her duff and assume the mantle of leadership herself. She may see herself as a leader, but she isn't. The mere fact that she, Zvan, PZ and the others are vocal and have a large audience doesn't make them leaders. It makes them celebrities. Leadership involves organizing resources and making hard decisions how best to mobilize them towards a goal. There isn't any one of that lot that has shown me that they are even marginally capable of true leadership. It is far easier for them to sit around on their blogs and complain about how no one will do what they want.

Maybe I'm behind on the psychology, but supporting someone's victimhood and protecting them can't be good for the psyche. Or their self-esteem. Matt D (of AExp and "who needs evidence?") had a spiel on AA where the fact that they teach you that you are helpless and need outside help is damaging. Same situation. You just encourage the cycle of victimization continually.

Skeeve - I'm not registered, and I'm not sure I could post as a guest (I'd prefer to do it with a name anyway), but you could point out that numerous people are "nice" IRL - including (supposedly) PZ. Hell, even the tired old "Hitler liked cats" trope means nothing. That would be Godwin, though, and I'm sure that means the internets would break. But, at this stage, who the hell would want to sit down and talk with these people? I wouldn't want to be in the same room with these losers. If these are such good people, why not register, post, and discuss? Why hide and run away like PZ?

Anyway, Re: Watson, you could always post the "hate mail" that Watson posted (from above somewhere in this thread) as an example of skewed priorities. Just because someone is a "friend" doesn't mean they are rational, stable, or not an idiot.

Exactly. In my more cynical moments, I think Kirby's greatest sin isn't that she disagrees with Benson, et al, but rather that she has succeeded.

Well, yeah, but anonymous claims are just that. Anonymous.

I know who ERV is, though. And given that she has demonstrated integrity I'll take her claims at face value.

Beyond that, I have the police reports for my organization (about 30k faculty/staff/students) so I have a pretty good idea of how often this sort of thing actually happens. While I freely admit that answer will always be "too often", I think its important to maintain perspective.

One last comment made on DC that I have not seen mentioned

Sir_Russ
Giving suggests the existence of a recipient, so, who exactly is it that PZ is giving this bad reputation to? The numbers suggest that PZ can only affect the views of a small fraction of the population since his audience is only a small fraction of the population. Even then, PZ's audience is mostly atheists anyway. So, do you think PZ is giving a bad reputation of atheists to atheists?

Too many people seem willing to project PZ's influence far beyond the market he actually reaches.
PZ and his ilk are not actually known by many atheists. Amazing isn't it?

Ophelia is really, to borrow a term from Watson's commenters, 'digging'

What the hell? How is my offer to stand in solidarity with recipients of real threats "a calculated insult?"

She then strawmans me asserting I claimed that only physical threats are real.

...and then blocked me on Twitter after banning me/censoring my comments on her blog.

The same world the Baboon Narrative Department have tried to create for the past year. They have failed, but their tactics - banning/blocking/strawmen, etc. - continue unabated.

I'm not sure why you even want to converse with Opheliar. She's a proven liar, unstable and vindictive. She has complete double standards when it comes to internet bullying, and she can't accept alternative POVs. Forget about her. She has NO influence or pulling power in the atheist/skeptic community. The majority of people either don't know who she is, or don't like her.

If you look through youtube, if you have a strong stomach, or even just search for images, you'll see red and blue, and who knows what else. Maybe all the shades of the rainbow. I can't understand why anybody would do that - I have thought of it, but I accept who I am and see no need to fake it. Maybe in some circles it's considered "edgy" or something, like Pokemon fanatics and anime fans, but it seems like she either does't like who she is or tries to sell herself as something she's not. Now, that's also based on listening to the SGU podcast, where she constantly tries to pretend she's a geek/nerd, when she is so not - she's pretty ignorant of the basics, and it's painful to listen to her play pretend when they guys go off. Just admit you're not one and be yourself. is that so hard?

All of the above is strictly my own opinion, with perhaps little basis in fact. Disclaimer for the reading impaired.

Funny isn't it, Opheliar. When you attempt to censor and ban people, they head for a forum where they are not censored and banned. Your banhammers have helped increase the profile of The Slyme Pit to no end.

Thanks, you stupid, miserable fart. :)

My first thought was Fiona Apple (and as someone said, the "heroin chic" look). It could be bruised eyes as well - maybe she got into it physically instead of just on the internet? Or maybe she's one who thinks raccoon eyes are a good look. I've known people like that. Yech - not my cup of tea.

I call shenanigans - the woman who googles her name at the drop of a hat to see who is talking about her had no idea? Right.

What is unfortunate about that example is that Bin Laden was entirely correct. Sorry to say this but the prevailing view in much of the world is that the US is a terrorist state.

I believe Chomsky came to that assessment and stated that publicly also:
The United States is a Leading Terrorist State
http://monthlyreview.org/2001/11/01/the ... rist-state
Q: Your comment that the U.S. is a “leading terrorist state” might stun many Americans. Could you elaborate on that?

A: I just gave one example, Nicaragua. The U.S. is the only country that was condemned for international terrorism by the World Court and that rejected a Security Council resolution calling on states to observe international law. It continues international terrorism. That example’s the least of it.
Do a search : United States is a Leading Terrorist State/Country/Nation and see for yourself. Do not take my word for it.

In any event, now that drones are being deployed in the US, my guess is that at some point people are going to start experiencing first hand what others in other countries already have.

I was unaware that Internet Big Swinging Dick badges existed, but I will consult with experts like PZ if I need to apply for one.

I have SSH on a non-standard port with root login disabled, although I could certainly lock it down more. Thanks for the tip.
EveryMan wrote:mod_security is your friend.

Also, just make sure you don't have any personal info on the server. A recursive 'grep' should help with that.
I am using nginx, which does not appear to have a mod_security add-on, but I will research it further. I also realize now that running a web server on the same system where I store backups (including personal files) for five other systems might not be a good idea, so I will investigate options for physically separating personal files from public files. Since I am relatively new to running a webserver for personal non-commercial use, I appreciate all the advice I can get from people with experience on these matters.

I've had the same problem with two different browsers. I wonder if some enterprising young baboon figured out how to DDOS? Either that or just the amount of traffic has broken something (that or it imploded from the sheet hypocrisy of A Hermit.

Justin - all this does is make you look better and them worse. You attempted to reach across the aisle, and no matter how bad that can be sometimes (look at Congress), it does show a more mature, shall I say, gentlemanly approach. Without trying to flatter, it is a sign of leadership that you can put aside some personal feelings and try to do the right thing.

They are like the scorpion crossing the river on the back of a frog. It's their nature. They'd bite the hand of someone trying to save them from drowning, out of sheer spite or fear. Respect has to be earned (beyond basic respect as a fellow human), and they've really been throwing theirs away by the bucketful. As they get more and more marginalized, the desperation will grow, as will the attacks.

Apparently, my situation -- receiving a threat from a bus driver (http://www.justinvacula.com/2012/03/i-r ... s-bus.html) who was
A) Identifiable...and as a person who disliked me
B) Posting nasty comments on my Facebook page
C) A county employee
D) Someone who worked for a service I depended on

was no different than Ophelia's situation that was
E) Quite cryptic
F) Over the top
G) Not investigated before a judgment was made
H) Turned out to be from a supporter

In my case, I reported, almost immediately, the threat to the police, found the source of the comments, and forwarded the comments to the bus driver's employer. Following the employer being notified, the employer acted saying
We have received your complaint about Daniel Wittenbreder. Mr. Wittenbreder’s comments to you on Facebook were not authorized by COLTS and they are inappropriate. He will face discipline by COLTS for making them if it is proven he actually made them. He has been informed not to deny you service on a COLTS bus because of your atheist beliefs or any other beliefs you have. He is to refrain from communicating with you concerning your privileges and/rights to utilize the COLTS bus services. If you are denied service on a COLTS bus or someone threatens to deny you service on a COLTS bus, please advise me immediately. Thank you.
In Ophelia's case, the comments were not actionable (police would have likely done nothing) and she didn't report to police.

These commenters are quite the group.

Then how come the Baboons have taken up the Vacuous Shitbag Troll nickname with glee and aplomb?

You should at least run your webserver in a chroot environment, then.

You should think of Prince Prospero from "The Masque of the Red Death"

http://i.imgur.com/9jF3L.jpg

and listen to "And When He Falleth" by Theatre of Tragedy. It's quite fitting!
