I don't like PZs hyperbole, you know that. You were supposedly referenced by RW in her talk as a 'woman' that was banned from a conference she was at
Was she actually banned? Further, who the hell does Rebecca Watson think she is? Queen Bee can't simply demand conferences ban people she doesn't like (which would be a lot of people, in effect).

As if to say that maybe I’m flogging a dead horse? :-)
No problemo – unlike most of AtheismPlus and, surprisingly, franc (politics & strange bedfellows …) I don’t have a problem with people asking questions …. ;-)
But I think your anecdote about some of your white friends calling one of their black friends a nigger illustrates and supports my argument that such words – along with “cuntâ€, “prickâ€, and the like – don’t necessarily apply to an entire group: if “cunt†isn’t sexist then, analogously, “nigger†isn’t racist, although both can be rude and insulting, of course. And it also illustrates
Lenny Bruce’s argument that “… it’s the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness.†And maybe that latter point is part of franc’s (and the Pit’s) fifth-column, guerilla-warfare, clandestine objective, at least with regard to “cunt†….
However, I’m most curious about the mechanism or process by which many people seem to reach the conclusion that either of those words – and similar ones – supposedly apply to entire groups. Particularly since the argument seems a little more tenuous for “nigger†and similar words, although that might be due to the suppression. But consider these definitions for the
word:
noun
1. Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive .
a. a black person.
b. a member of any dark-skinned people.
2. Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive . a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc.
3. a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised.
Interestingly and in passing, I note that the article describes cases, similar to your anecdote, where there is “the sense [of] referring to a “black personâ€, [as] sometimes used among African-Americans, in a neutral or familiar way.†Much like “cunt†in this neck of the woods, at least sometimes.
But it is the last two definitions that seem suggestive of that conflation of the individual and group: each of them refer to “a person†by which there is no justification that I can see for implying that it refers to an entire group, no justification for arguing that any group – on average – is any more or less “contemptible, inferior, or ignorant; or economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised†than any other group. And certainly not due to any intrinsic “flawsâ€.
Hope that addresses your query or question, although I think it is, in general, a complicated question so I may not have ....
Lenny had the right of it. If the reaction to a redneck screaming nigger was to point, laugh, and walk off, the word would lose all its power. It would become about as offensive as honky. If the mere utterance of a word can make you mindlessly mad or offended, you've given a tremendous amount of power to whomever uses it.

'I dont speak at conferences I have to fly to' has been one of my 'diva' speaker-rules since Day 1. I can dig up any number of emails where speakers have asked me from other parts of the country/world, and I have declined/suggested Skype/suggested local people I know are good.
In fact I did a Skype presentation on HIV about two weeks ago.
Why can *I* do that, with very minimal interest in environmentalism (my reasoning is more about time and supporting local talent), but our 'environmentalist' friend PZ Myers cant?
Because he can't be arsed to actually DO anything in support of his belief that might be the least bit inconvenient?

The first year I lived in this house, I made the mistake of putting all the candy in a big bowl, and letting kids grab what they wanted. Then this obese older kid (around 12 or 13 at least) stuck his big fist in the bowl and took almost everything.
I thought, "Surely if he has Prader-Willi syndrome or something, his parents wouldn't let him go out trick-or-treating on his own."

Just a couple of considerations, here. No insurance company will ever cover a programme like that, particularly in a country with strict regulations like the UK. I can tell you the specific reasons if you want.
Brown has a continuous history of working with stooges and claiming to possess BS powers, like NLP and the ability to send people in a trance at will. But stage hypnosis is something very different from what most people think it is. There's simply no way that he could pull some of the stunts performed in the show (especially those involving memory deletion). In fact, it's pretty bad even by the standards of basic mentalism.

Dog! That was scary. I popped in to catch up and found I'm 700 pages behind. I thought something big had happened, like RW got arrested for fraud or something.
BTW, I was just over reading Non Stamp Collector's YouTube channel comments. That poor sap doesn't know what he's getting into. Somebody should warn him to at least keep an eye on his wallet and get a list of things he's not to mention on his blog from PeePee. I like his videos, but won't be reading his blog...same as Rad (who is better on video anyway).

Fucking hell, this is just basic consideration and spending an extra 20 seconds editing your post. Except when I say it, I'm a cranky cunt that hates everyone - which is technically true, but also means I'm joking and don't mean it. Or something. But nothing displays airhead, 'tardbook style peabrainedness more than quoting an entire comment, images video and all, only add "me too!" to the end of it. Stupid habit first entrenched in the '90s by the AOL and WebTV hordes, now normalised and idiots the web over think nothing of it. Fuck you. Edit with CONSIDERATION for your reader. Morons.

Oh fuck off, Brown is an entertainer who takes major pains to point out that he doesn't haven't any magic or "powers".

Derren Brown is a funny one, because on the one hand he's a skeptic and is quite honest about it, and on the other hand he seems not to mind the fact that lots of people use him as evidence for all sorts of 'woo', especially NLP.
I worked for two different retailers while I was a student. One was a mobile phone company that doesn't like to pay tax and the other is perhaps the most well-known camera shop. Anyway, BOTH companies played the same clip of Brown 'convincing' Simon Pegg that he wanted a Red BMX when he 'really' wanted a leather jacket. To a skeptic, Pegg clearly does want the BMX and Brown probably slipped the leather jacket note into his wallet or something similar, and pretended that he'd messed with Pegg's mind. Now both companies used this as evidence that you can convince the customer to buy something even if they don't really want it, so long as you use the 'right' language. Bullcrap I say. Vo... I mean the mobile phone retailer actually did send us on a compulsory NLP course. Crazy really.
I also remember being at Waterloo station seeing Sky News on the big screen announcing uncritically that Derren Brown had revealed how he 'guessed' the lottery. It was Galton's 'Wisdom of Crowds', of course. Some people are quite stupid, really.

Not quite, cunt. For instance, he' s now claiming to be hurt for the suggestion that he used a stooge, which is the same as claiming that it is possible to send someone on an instant trance and induce permanent amnesia. That is a definite claim to a non-existing power.

Never quite sure what to make of NLP. Beyond some basic truths, I'm sure that the coercive techniques are a big steaming pile of horseshit intended to con dullwitted would-be hucksters. However, NLP is a big subject also encompassing various methods of altering one's own mindset and some of it is quite feasible. Take, for example, the technique of reframing negative experiences by replaying them in the mind along with a comic soundtrack. Recent evidence about the way that memories are stored after recall lends some credibility. I sometimes wonder if things like NLP start out from a solid basis before morphing into pie-in-the-sky.
