It is, isn't it!

Honestly, I'd go back over there for a few more laffs, but PZ's got the banhammer hovering over me at the moment, so I'm gonna have to wait a while before offering a few more prods of the stick.

You could try 'obese dobbers' instead of fatsos, see what the baboons make of that.

Oh yeah, PZs mighty banhamer.

Step 1. Register a new gmail account
Step 2. Go to a proxy site and register with ftb on wordpress.
Step 3. Confirm the link.
Step 4. Log in under your usual IP.

Not that i'd do that of course, but it is hilarious that PZ talks about the "ban hammer" as if he's brandishing some awesome weapon.

If you expect harassment at TAM, you see it in everything, if you expect to fail science, because you are a woman, you will, no matter how much you study. If you believe in god, you will see miracles... Is that better?

To me that is the opposite of the "law of attraction"

-- Please give examples of what you and posters here agree on.--

We agree that god probably doesn’t exist. We agree that rational enquiry is the best method for arriving at truth. We agree that harassment policies at conventions are generally a good thing. We agree that these policies should probably be published to be more effective.

Or am I really lost, and you (you personally, not attempting speaking on behalf of everyone else) disagree with me about any of that?
Gnumann, quisling of the MRA nation

We agree that god probably doesn’t exist.

Fair enough, but we also probably agree on the fact that Niburu doesn’t exist, that there are no fairies and that the sun’s going to rise tomorrow.

We agree that rational enquiry is the best method for arriving at truth.

There are several problems with this. One is that your words are not mirrored by your previous actions. Another is that my concept of “truth” is a wee bit more complex than a reified destination one can “arrive at”. So no, most likely we do not agree here, and again the bits we agree on is very trivial.

We agree that harassment policies at conventions are generally a good thing. We agree that these policies should probably be published to be more effective.

If you really think this you’ve done a spectacularly bad job at communicating this in this thread.

Re: are we turning into bullies of Amy...

I don't really think so. I might have been sympathetic of how she feels if I thought what she's saying is really how she feels. But I suspect that since she's in a group with RW that gives power to the victim she's just playing to that.

There we have a group that saw no problem with one of their own calling an audience in one of her talks a rape enabler and parroting misogynistic speach and don't see that as harrassment or abuse... but someone wearing a tshirt while giving a talk that pretty much just says skepchick doesn't speak for me and that is harassment!? Just too non sensical. So no, I don't believe that she's upset for why she says she is. If she's emotional it's because she's looked outside her cocoon and has had to face the truth... not every woman agrees with them.

Dilurk,
Please stop advising us to be who you would like us to be. I've been letting the comments you make about tone, and how you think we've said enough, or how you don't think we should criticise Amy's "art" etc., to slide, but truly, we don't ask that you be more like us, so don't ask us to be more like you.

I'll let MKG respond to your newest comment in regards to this:

I'm not saying criticism isn't necessary, but there comes a point where the point has been made and there is nothing more useful to be said.
A. I find this hugely entertaining. Many of us have to deal with people like this in our day jobs and venting here provides us a safe and much-needed outlet.

Another funny thing in that thread is PeeZus's initial opening lobb, where, in part, he says:
TAM wants to be open to everyone, including gropers and ... drunk fumblers, and doesn’t want to send any messages that might inhibit them.
Bt, um, I thought Watson didn't go this year?

On a more serious note, though, the Bloviating Bullfrog of Bullshit is actually stating that TAM kept their policy secret and had hidden cameras and "disguised security goons" so that they could encourage the bad menz, you know all those stalkers and rapers who are just dying to go to TAM, to in fact go to TAM.

The T-shirt would be permitted under CFI's harassment policy.
Critical examination of beliefs, including critical commentary on another person’s views, does not, by itself, constitute hostile conduct or harassment. One of the underlying rationales of this policy is to promote the free exchange of ideas, not to inhibit it.
This is irrelevant to TAM, except that Laden, Benson, Bieber, and John C. Welch(?) miraculously agree that it is a good policy. Thus, were the organizers of TAM to follow such policy, they could safely avoid error.

A secret anti-harassment policy? Why? So that someone would step over the unknown line and be hammered as a way of showing how strong the policy is? If an anti-harassment poicy is not public and in your face it will not do what it is supposed to do. It would, however, provide great opportunities for selective ‘gotcha’s’.

Then again, maybe this is exactly what was intended? An unpublicized policy so that a person refusing to take no for an answer can be hammered to show that the policy is there and works, but no advance notice of the policy to make sure ASPUAs (Atheist/Skeptic PUAs) will still pay their money and go. If that was the goal, they probably succeeded. If the goal was making the convention safer for all? Dismal failure.

So have any harassment events been reported from this year's TAM, other than one woman wearing a mean, offensive t-shirt, and one guy trying unsuccessfully to hug a woman he didn't know? If those are the two worst things that happened amidst a gathering of 1400+ people, I'd say security at the event was a spectacular success! What are the FTB crowd bitching about? If there had been widespread groping, ass-grabbing, cat-calling, etc. then perhaps they'd have something to complain about, but there was basically zero bad going on, correct?

By the way, thanks, Lsuoma! I was a bit skeptical at first, but I am really enjoying the new forum now - thanks for all your hard work, and thanks to ERV, also.

Re: are we turning into bullies of Amy...

I would love it if people like Surly Amy could just turn up to TAM and enjoy it, like the vast majority of the other women there. Instead, Amy carries an incredible amount of baggage, a lot of it heaped on her by Watson, Myers and company. The Cut of the FC5 has got so many of them wound up in hypersensitive nonsense, they can find the slighest thing upsetting and disturbing. I blame people like Opheliar, PZ Barnum and Twitson for how Amy reacted.

As for 'bullying', I don't think criticism of Amy for her reaction can be considered "bullying", especially since it is the wrong reaction. She is an adult and she has chosen to follow the dogma of the Baboons. I'd rather not have people turning up to atheist/skeptics and getting upset, but I don't think TAM, or Harriet Hall bare any responsibility.

I for one am not laughing at Amy, I'm simply amazed and shocked at how she reacted.

By the way, thanks, Lsuoma! I was a bit skeptical at first, but I am really enjoying the new forum now - thanks for all your hard work, and thanks to ERV, also.
Yer welcome. Abbie's showing up has really helped, and it's good to see at a good selection of the regulars from Slime Pit 1.0 (not going to name names (:-)) because I know I'll miss someone since my memory is kinda fucked right now - 12 hours sleep in the last 100 (and, no, you don't want to know...))

Agreed. She's another self-fulfilling prophecy deserved of neither pity nor mercy. Parallel - old usenet days, I had a similar experience with a wheel-chair gimp married couple that were grandstanding the "abortion is murder" shtick. Somehow, because they were in wheelchairs I had to tone down my rhetoric.

Amy the fire hydrant chaser is being put into a similar frame. She's not really any different to white rastafarian "anarchists" that sit out the front of farmer's markets selling you beads and bangles while denouncing you as a capitalist pig. But because Amy also sells pathetic junk, which she "tries really, really hard" to make, she's somehow entitled to special consideration? Fuck her. She's a pigeon on a rifle range. She's an open target. The only people that deserve respect are those that earn it.

It has indeed been fun Lsouma, and the amusement has increased tenfold owing to t-shirtgate. FfTB has fallen into complete absurdity over this; so wrapped up in their dogma and expected behaviors, they just can't call it when someone of their own is just being silly.

For all that, I do wish Amy all the best in her creative efforts, and that any further slings and arrows of outrageous...t-shirts don't prove too dispiriting.

And to those FfTBers watching - it's nothing personal on my part, honestly; but can't you see how daft you're being over this bloody t-shirt business? You do yourself a disservice in getting so het up about it. And it's not just us here who can see it, either.

Anyways...beddy-byes for me *yawn* excessive laughter can be very tiring.

Yes, the ERV/SlymePit has become much more confident of itself in the last few months. It doesn't feel as if the Slymers are shouting protests in the middle of the Sahara Desert anymore.

There was a definite change a couple of months ago, and now, post-Laden, post-ThunderF00t, post Cuntgate (Coffee Loving Skeptic), and post TAM, the FC5 are looking very vulnerable. Fewer people see the Baboons as a power in the movement, and there is an increasing notion that they can be ignored or challenged without fear.

The dogmatism has gone so far they must now claim that any offence intentional or otherwise constitutes harassment. The world should be wrapped in cotton wool and nobody should even be allowed to make an indirect statement, through any medium, or better still any statement at all. Whatever you do don't challenge them on this, because you're a moron, dipshit fuckhead fucking liar if you do. Oh, you didn't get any cotton wool?

They do this while thinking that they're the real brains of the rationalist movement.

The other people who targeted me don’t deserve our attention at this point. So know that just a ‘silly tshirt’ did not reduce me to tears. Sadly, there was a lot more going on.

I get this sense too. Its becoming increasingly clear that the FC5 do not represent the majority of atheists with this bizarre brand of feminism they advocate, and that outspoken resistance is growing - they just happened to be really loud for a while.

What is the purpose of this question? I would hope that you know the answer to that - but in case you for some reason don't, you need a refresher. Identity here tends to be irrelevant - you only get judged on what you say. I'd love to see her come here and explain her self - but the chances of anything she says not being sophist gibberish are nil. Therefore, she would likely get her feelings hurt. And that would be somehow our fault? You do realise what apologetics are don't you? It's not limited to xtianity.

re the speed of this forum now...

It's great to see all the involvement so early in its career.
it can be hard to keep up many times during the day. A few times in the coming months I'm going to be away from my computer for as long as a week at a time. I don't know if I'll ever be able to catch up! If Justicar joins up I don't have a hope in hell. Are there any more conferences coming up for the fc5/skepchicks to embarass themselves at? That could also put catching up beyond reach. We need to set up raconteurs to do weekly summaries or something.

What would you guys do if Surly Amy somehow chose to post on here to defend her side? Would you be willing to give her a listen?

I'm not saying criticism isn't necessary, but there comes a point where the point has been made and there is nothing more useful to be said.
Dilurk, I can't say how Amy would be treated (not a mind-reader), but I can point to an earlier episode from the Periodical Table of Swearing where Jen was getting bagged on pretty hard, stepped in to defend herself, and was met with -- surprise, surprise -- polite deference, not only from Abbie herself. I think you'll find that most of this crowd actually longs to talk to "the other side" as actual human beings, but have been frustrated by the apparent pointlessness of trying to do so.

Hell, what I wouldn't give for Ophelia herself to pop in here and ask me, "Okay, you claim to be a feminist--what's your beef with me?" and have a for realsies conversation about the matter in a place where her ban stick can't be thrown down the instant the conversation stops going her way. Any of the Skepchicks or FC5 are more than welcome to pop and have an actual chat, with none of the threats and shouting-down that define FfTB or their congregation. But I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I also wish we had marriage equality in Alabama and that Bruno ate dust and shit $1000 bills daily. Both of those seem just as likely.

TAM

#1793

Post by mordacious1 »

What you guys don't seem to understand is, that the only reason TAM was a safe place, was that the usual victims didn't show up this year.

Had Ophelia not done the smart thing and pulled out, she certainly would have been bludgeoned in the hallway by a guy wearing a hockey mask.

Had Watson showed up, dog only knows how many times she would have been asked out for coffee and raped on various modes of in-hotel transportation.

If PZ and Abbie were unexpectedly at the same venue, a Ned Beatty (Deliverance) would certainly have occurred, PZ on the receiving end (does anyone really want to see that?).

None of these horrible things happened precisely because of the TAM boycott. Look what happened to the one SkepChick that was brave enough to attend...the horror she was put through, having to day after day sit there, knowing that there was a T shirt walking around mocking her.

No, the ONLY reason TAM was safe was because the fftb people had the forethought to prevent such nasty occurrences by not showing up. So they should not be blamed, but supported in not showing up at any conferences anywhere. This would make atheism safe for everyone.

It's also becoming clear that this forum is a conglomeration of people with different views and from different atheist circles, but are united against a common foe.

As for me being that low on the list of posts (masakari2012: 31), looks like that's something I will have to remedy. I've been spending too much time on youtube and random blogs, trying to sway others by putting info and links out there, some of which I find from posts in this forum.

I'm thinking that the common foe is Bullshit and Hypocrisy rather than any one person or clique. YMMV, as it is sometimes hard to differentiate between the person and the behaviour.

I am surprised that I made this list. Thanks, Lsuoma, for creating and maintaining this forum. It would be nice to have a SiteMeter or something similar to see where the hits are coming from, but it's not a big deal for me if you prefer otherwise.

Given the increased frequency of posts on this forum, I would greatly appreciate an increase in the number of posts in the RSS feed to 50. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who posts here. I feel safe and welcome at the Slyme Pit. :D

"Ned" comments on Surly Amy's tears at SkepDirt:
Wait. What? Does she have ANY idea what Dr. Hall went through being a woman DOCTOR ? in the AIRFORCE? In the 1960s?

“I was offended that Dr. King talked about dreams because sometimes I can’t sleep at night.”
