It's unbelievable. In that article she goes through the exact same thought processes that we do at the slymepit and comes (unsurprisingly) to the same conclusion that we do. Yet oolon tries to spin it the other way.Dick Strawkins wrote:Nice try at quotemining.

There is no true rhyming slang. Like I said there are different conventions depending where you are. It is after all slang not RP English. Some slang uses the complete phrase, some doesn't. Just because they don't where you come from doesn't mean it is universal. I've never heard anybody refer to their hands as totties, only as tottie scones. Sometimes we'll use only the first word, sometimes the whole phrase. You haven't got a scooby about our slang.Spence wrote:

Just this one question oolon, and answer with evidence please, of which people you are talking about on this thread making the claim that you think you are countering.
Not what they mean to *some* people in the UK or the rest of the world even! This is specifically what I replied to. But I put 'no one' in quotes as they obviously don't believe that if they spent 1 second thinking about the language they used.If that's the case, or if he's lived there in the recent past, then all his complaints over the meanings of "cunt" and "twat" are a sham. He already knows what they mean to non USA people.
So what you think you are 'winning' over is not even my point since I put 'no one' in quotes and was obviously talking about these sort of daft statements.
My point was this is a ridiculous way to decide if something is misogynistic - I thought as the great sceptics you are you would acknowledge this and come back with a better way of determining the nature of a slur than public opinion. Apparently not. Maybe you believe that where creationists hold the majority it is fine to think the world is 6000 years old (Clue, the majority can be wrong about things you know)

Myers has repeatedly referred to Atheism+ as a grassroots social justice movement. I use the term "true" to mean "true to the original intent of rhyming slang", not true as in "no true scotsman" (with apologies for the example ;) ). I recognise that it does happen that the second word is sometimes spoken in cases, but this is unusual in rhyming slang and not true to the original intent of it. I suspect we are talking at cross purposes. The construction involves replacing a common word with a rhyming phrase of two or three words and then, in almost all cases, omitting the secondary rhyming word, in a process called hemiteleia,[1][2] making the origin and meaning of the phrase elusive to listeners not in the know.

Well if that's the case then why the fuck did you use the argumentum ad populum previously?
1. Say a black person is a n*gger in a context where that person is being disparaged then racism is a reasonable assumption
2. Say a gay person is a f*ggot in a context where that person is being disparaged then homophobia is a reasonable assumption
3. Say a female person is a c*nt in a context where that person is being disparaged then misogyny is a reasonable assumption
Strangely the majority of rational-sceptic-atheists will agree with all of the above. They will also agree on Humanist principles that there is scope for change. Regardless of how often you have infringed any of the above 'rules'... To imply otherwise is wrongheaded at best, and disingenuous at worst.

Unlike some people I really do not care what terms you use.
For some reason I remember listening to a conversation when I was in Calgary around 30 years ago among a group of people. Well, the man who had been saying "nigger" every ten words walked off, and the black guy in the group said something complimentary about him, and one girl took him to task because as far as she was concerned he was a racist. So the black guy tells her he was not offended seeing as he was saying honkey himself so ... at which point they walked off still arguing.
... the point is oolon, the words had no impact on him, and my only thought at the time was hmmmmm... there are other people like myself.... you can call me a member of a slave owning family, a neo-colonialistic elitist, an imperialistic oppressor of the poor and down trodden to my face, and it will have the same impact on me as that guy who was called a nigger to his face.

Oolon, you are seriously hard-of-thinking. Do you seriously think your rephrasing of their claim bears any logical resemblance of the original statement? If you're going to engage in honest discussion, the first thing you do is to not completely change the point being made by someone else. Try answering what they actually said, and ask for clarification before heaping your own retarded interpretations on what other people say.
I never claimed to be "winning" on this topic. I just wanted you to explain where it came from. I asked for evidence. So far, you have shown evidence of a different point being made, so my best guess at the moment is that it came from your overactive imagination. I am happy to correct this if you can provide evidence to the contrary. So what you think you are 'winning' over is not even my point since I put 'no one' in quotes and was obviously talking about these sort of daft statements.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
The plot thickens as regards Dolly Dillahunty; as far as Flewellyn is concerned, his perfidy now knows no bounds: http://freethoughtblogs.com/lousycanuck ... ment-83364
Flewellyn says:
October 6, 2012 at 7:42 pm ADT
One thing I want on the record: the reason we mods did delay on enforcing the ban, was because Matt PMed one of our mods and told us that Greta had asked both sides to agree to wait until she had a chance to talk to the moderation team. We took him at his word on this and agreed to hold off. In return, he agreed in PM to not put up his youtube video, or post any more arguments on the forums, until after Greta had spoken with us. We weren’t happy with the idea of involving her, because of her own personal issues right now, but if she had volunteered herself to deal with it, we would wait. That was the agreement.
Well, he broke that agreement within less than an hour after we made it. He kept arguing on the forums, and proceeded with his video anyway. This put us in an untenable position, because we had agreed to hold off on action under terms that were now violated. When he put up his video on Thursday, we decided that the agreement was moot.
It was too late. Damage done. We had tried to keep our part of the bargain, and he had broken his. And by trying to keep to the bargain, we damaged our users’ faith in us.
P.S.: For the record: Greta has not contacted us. Nor do we expect her to do so. We don’t fault her at all if she decides she doesn’t want to deal with this shit. It’s not something a freshly grieving person needs to have on their plate. I know firsthand that losing a parent is devastating, and saps your brainspoons like nothing else. So make no mistake, we don’t fault Greta one iota for anything about this at all.

I searched for the bit in quotes - where you seem to be quoting someone - but it found one comment only, yours. Sorry, where does Dick explicitly make that argument? Can you link to it? Or have you just invented another straw man (I suspect yes, but I'll give you the opportunity to show not). I want to see the actual argument Dick made, because you have shown yourself to be less than honest in representing other peoples views. FFS, do you never learn not to attribute arguments to people that they have not made.oolon, slimy turd wrote:I have been arguing on here and Dick et al have been saying "but..but... most people in the UK don't see cunt as misogynistic therefore it is not a misogynistic slur".
I know many people (me included) have noted that it has been used in the UK and not been considered, in those cases, to be misogynistic. That's what we call evidence, even though it is anecdotal, it is better than your pile of stupidity that involves believing you can read people's minds and know their subjective views on the topic, and then wail that you can't use that to prove a negative. Well, duh.
I've been around on this forum for longer than you oolon, although real life sometimes gets in the way and I can't always keep 100% up to date. Your reasoning is (as it always has been) just a confused fucking mess. The points we make are simple to follow and understand, and are explained in detail in that link that you gave to the "F" word. It completely endorsed our position. Just try and read it, and understand it. At least then you'll be arguing against our actual position, and not the weird position that you've falsely attributed to us.oolon, slimy turd wrote:I suppose I could forgive you for missing it as you joined recently - but Dick... To suggest that words have different meanings, depending on the place or time, is not employing the 'Argumentum ad populum'-oolon, slimy turd wrote:Yup, you got me. Argumentum ad populam. Weird that although I was wrong to use it you are happy to ignore my point based on the same fallacy?Tony Parsehole wrote: Strangely the majority of rational-sceptic-atheists will agree with all of the above. They will also agree on Humanist principles that there is scope for change. Regardless of how often you have infringed any of the above 'rules'... To imply otherwise is wrongheaded at best, and disingenuous at worst.
Once we've established that there are regional variations in accepted meaning we are left with the conclusion that, being reasonable, we must allow for a variation of alternative meanings for the word in question.
Perhaps there is a place where "cunt" is always purely misogynistic, a phrase denoting a pejorative term for women in general.
And perhaps there is another place where "cunt" is simply a word for a female's genitals, a word which is sometimes used as a gender neutral insult.
If you seek to argue that the former meaning takes precedent over the latter then please provide some evidence to support your claim.

You appear to be dead on there, Badger, sir. The excellent phrases.org.uk has a good discussion on it. It was used by Dickens:Badger3k wrote:While mowing my lawn, I remembered an old phrase I haven't heard in a while. Some people call the A+ crowd "delicate flowers", but I remember the old phrase (something like) "hothouse flowers" - plants that were too delicate to survive outside of a greenhouse, or ones that required a lot of care. Normally tropical plants if my memory is correct (could be wrong). However, I think calling the damaged people at that forum (seek professional help, seriously) flowers is misleading, unless they are that one flower that smells like rotting meat.

: : What does the phrase "hothouse flower" mean. Thanks a lot.
: A flower that isn't hardy enough to grow under natural conditions. It has to be pampered and grown in a greenhouse or hothouse.
: On "Frazier," (a U.S. television show), the main character was complaining about various things that bothered him. His father said, "Aren't you the little hothouse orchid."
ESC is, as usual, exactly right. For the figurative use of the phrase in regard to people (besides Frazier) who need pampering or special conditions, the OED cites Dickens (in Nicholas Nickleby, 1838): "Mrs. Witterly is of a very excitable nature, very delicate, very fragile, a hothouse plant." SS

Why would they need to consult with Greta to referee this one? If they're saying that Matt broke their rule and therefore deserved to be banned, how would Greta (or anyone else) stepping in change this fact? People's privileges are showing left and right.Flewellyn wrote:the reason we mods did delay on enforcing the ban, was because Matt PMed one of our mods and told us that Greta had asked both sides to agree to wait until she had a chance to talk to the moderation team.

The thing that stands out about the most effective MH recovery boards is that the mods will allow a certain amount of blaming and self-pity, but there will come a point where they step in and say "own your own shit". A+ is like mental health anti recovery.I do have sympathy for the crying people from A+, by the way. A+ has attracted some genuinely fragile people who are clearly quite damanged and unable to cope in normal circles. I think in that way it's probably been quite successful - so props to them for that - I'm just really uncomfortable about how it treats them after they get there.
I've been on mental health issues boards before (I'm an occasional hypochondriac in a OH FUCK I HAS THE CANCER way) and the way they run them is very different from this. I do understand that it's positive to blerrrgh all your feelings about something and keep a journal of your feelings so you can get a grasp on how your mental health is affecting your life. But A+ is not the place to do this. The sooner these people realise it and leave is probably for the best.

Hello, new face here at "the Pit." I finally decided to sign up and see what was all the fuss about! However, most of you don't give off the vibe of being horrible rapists (as opposed to the really good rapists), nor belittle women to feed your growing misogyny so it seems I was misinformed. A shame, I figured I would find some kinship here being labelled this myself. Could argue that it was passed on to me unfairly, however I have it on good authority I was trolling and readily deserved it.
I've done the occasional truth-forging over at the echo chamber (FTB, haven't visited A+theism or Skepchick) where I go by the moniker PG (or PeeGee), however I managed to be put in moderation on most blogs there by the primary offenders even though I tried my best to be both accomodating and polite. This accomodation and polite nature of mine, though, was translated as "concern and/or tone trolling" and either subsequently banned or permanently put in moderation. Still astounding to get that line of defense. The most amusing part is how even after they ban you over there, they will continue asking you questions and then assume victory when no response is given. Because we can't, you daft morons.
I was told I was a "Slymepitter" (along with MRA, misogynist, women-hater) many times (even though I've never been here) so I needed to see it for myself and see what the hell they were so damned paranoid about.
Anyway, you guys seem like right cunts and I'm a right prick. I'll fit right in! (A nod is as good as a wink to a blind bat!)

They've been desperately trying to poison the Slimepit well for a long time. The reason is simple: they simply cannot stand the fact that there is a place where people don't kowtow to them, and aren't afraid of them. And they cannot handle the fact that this place debunks their atrocious nonsense on a daily basis. So they hold their noses, libel us, call us rape apologists, MRAs, scumbags etc., try to dox us, et. al.in an attempt to keep their own away from here and others from being tempted to check this place out.
Meanwhile, we just have fun pointing out their lies and having belly larfs at their angry, pretentious expense. So have fun!

The attitude difference between mental health forums and A+ is that people who post on MH forums are mostly people who can't cope with the world and would like to change themselves to cope with it while the A+ crowd are the kind of people who can't cope with the world and expect it to change to cope with them.

I'm a divorced professional guy with no kids and so I am my only dependent. I've been harassed by serious right-wing assholes in the past and even they had nothing that I actually feared. My attorney is a ruthless and accomplished woman and she'd eat you for breakfast and shit out Surly-ramics by lunch. I'm willing to pay money for no other reason to get one of you fucks to sit down for a nice 4-hour videotaped deposition under oath about your extracurricular activities, previous history of threats and who knew what when.
If you want to see what that looks like, check out the deposition of Terry Hobbes of The Robinhood Hills Murders fame:

Hobbs was dumb enough to sue Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks for defamation, which got him nothing but a nice long deposition where he repeatedly contradicted and implicated himself. That deposition was crucial in the eventual release of the West Memphis three on an Alford Plea.
So, if you would like to sit down and talk about, say, your own doxing of people, false DMCA claims and anything else you might have hidden in your sock drawer that you'd like to become a matter of public record, you've picked a perfect way to do it.
Some people don't have the time and resources to call your bluffs.
I do.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
There was a post earlier this evening referring to Ophelia Benson getting a bit upset (oh fuck off and do something useful for once, Ophelia) about Dawkins using the word "bitchy". However, Opheilia does not seem to have the same qualms about he Novellas using the term "science works, bitches!" and other swear words that in normal circumstances they would rant and rave about. Queen Bee herself has a rather dirty gob (that does not include sucking PZ's dick). Futher, I don't think Ophelia has ever told off her bestest friend and little runt Rhys Morgan about his use of the term "cunt" on his Twitter feed.
