I’m not sure it’s useful for us to seek common ground on this topic. Though I suspect that noble cause was dropped long ago.
Jokes and metaphors aside I do support limits on immigration and the careful vetting of immigrants. I do live in a rural area near small towns that are losing certain aspects of quality of life because of people moving into the area which is happening at a rate that probably more rapid than what is happening to Sydney. The expanding population is encroaching on some of the nice natural areas and causes us natives to share the remaining spots with more people. There are some pluses such as better services such as medical available locally so there are some benefits, but it is a trade off.
Most of the people moving here are Canadians, but we are getting a fair number of immigrants too. There are exceptions, but mostly they integrate reasonably well. We get some Europeans plus more from India and China. The Chinese seem to be integrating about as well as the Europeans.
The biggest complaints about the Chinese is from the larger cities, not because they aren't adapting well but that they are driving up real estate prices to the point that young people in particular are finding it difficult buy homes.

Probably won't bother: another three weeks will see the cottagers gone and only the natives will remain here. From Victoria Day to Labor Day this place is full of visitors I can do without.
I do feel that belonging to a community is important. I rather envy those who grow up and remain in a community; they have something that most of us lack. I grew up in a small Wiltshire village listed in the Domesday Book, and what would life be like if I had stayed there as a family doc? That's a situation to be contrasted with Mrs Screwtape's upbringing, where as a naval brat she moved every two years (Singapore, Malta, Gibraltar, Portsmouth, northern Ireland, Scotland and ditto repeato). She loves to travel, to move house, and has no feel for the subtle pleasures of being part of or belonging to a community. I'll be happy to die here and then she can go where she pleases. The most remarkable thing about my years in London was the anonymity, where the people in the corner shop at the end of the road didn't know me or care to try to remember me between visits. No one cared when I lit a pipe and strode down the street in a cloud of Balkan Sobranie, nor did they tell the missus who thought the pipe was history. Couldn't do that here, so perhaps some community supervision matters to those of us seeking an external locus of control.
Oh, yes - Canadians. Better than Saudis right now.
