Oh, you poor bastard. In the early 1970's an offer for my wife - in her teens at the time - was once made in Oued El Marsa involving around a dozen camels and then some white ones on top. Fortunately, the dickhead sublieutenant who escorted her that day realised, with much prompting from her, that the offer was serious and ought to be refused (selling the eldest daughter of the senior RN officer in Gibraltar might not be helpful to one's career). She still seems to experience a few shivers about what might have happened had he not cottoned on to reality.Lsuoma wrote: ↑Were the camels pretty?MarcusAu wrote: ↑My sister was almost traded off for 3 camels when she was in Egypt. The saddest part of that stabbing story is that the kids now on life support machines were probably just as intent on doing the same to the ones now sitting in a police cell. And it just goes round and round and round, like a never ending Ferris wheel of carnage.

'K' in that case is King's, as in King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill. At the interview I was asked what was the last book I had read, and I answered honestly: Buchan's 'Island of Sheep'. 'No one reads Buchan these days' replied the head examiner. 'Well, I do' I muttered, and decided to place King's along with Middlesex and Bristol (sorry, Tit) in the also-ran category of schools that made an offer I could do without.
As for memoirs written by me or Mrs Screwtape - I don't know that I am strong enough to read all that she accomplished before meeting me when she was nineteen in 1976. Nor, perhaps, is she prepared for all the bits etc etc. That's as it should be in a successful marriage of 38 legal years and three splendidly sinful ones prior to legalisation.
My bias towards Irish drunkards is entirely due to the landscape of my childhood, which was carved out by the navvies responsible for the Kennet & Avon canal and the Great Western Railway. My delight in The Blackcap pub in Camden came later, after I started at UCH (as did it's reputation for drag - see Withnail & I - it was an Irish labourers' drinking hole in the days when I called Camden home.

Ironic to see her pandering to POCs now that she is a politician. I'll instruct my son to change his vote, unless he likes the newly-invented concept of 'shit-voting' (cf shit-posting), in which case he can and will do what the fuck he wants. As usual.
I've performed enough D&C's on people whose periods were late that I would prefer the service to be official, safe and covered. Faith and I may differ on that matter.

Interesting to hear of the steps taken in your marriage (39 next year by your count).
I've heard tell that Buchan was rather an unsavory character that ended up in Canada - are you sure that his example is the one you want to follow?
Canals are wonderful things - I've walked the Regents Canal (which made London into an Island - sometime in the 1820's I think). And must remember to take a boat through the Islington tunnel one of these days. Also been to Bristol and Basingstoke and Birmingham to name three places associated with canals starting with B. I do love Camden but it seems like they have commercialized punk rock when you go there these days.
Speaking of navvies - I remember my Dad told me the old joke which didn't mean the same to me until I reached London. To Whit:
An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman were arguing about who was the most efficient (ie cheapest) at building. The Englishman said "We built Buckingham Palace for a couple of Sovereigns'. To which the Scotsman replied "we built Scotland Yard for a few Coppers". And then the Irishman finished up with "Well we built the London sewers and you know what that was for...". This story must pre-date anyone currently on this board - so U leave it here for posterity.

I’m not convinced she has a pragmatic handle on dealing with the misuse of homeless shelters, though I guess the subtext is to throw the problem (literally) back at the source.
That would be a pretty direct response. :lol:I want every homeless person in our city to have a warm bed this winter. But right now, they're being crowded out of our strained shelter system by an invasion of illegal migrants monopolizing our resources. As Mayor, I will evacuate every illegal migrant from our public housing and bus them to the front steps of the Prime Minister's official residence.

I think it's nuanced and in the edges and details. Stuff where 1st Amendment rides up against Free Speech.Matt Cavanaugh wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 7:05 amI'm guessing "First Amendment absolutist" would be someone who believes the nation's highest law applies in all instances, not just most times except when someone else's feelings might be hurt.Marc Randazza is a lawyer, not a First Amendment absolutist but pretty, pretty close.
I'd love to ask Randazza or any non-absolutists which part(s) they're not completely sold on:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
I can't find anything more recent than this from 2017, but he basically very recently tweeted (I think) that he is not such a free speech absolutist to think that free speech should let Michelle Carter off for texting her boyfriend to commit suicide. (As I am currently hopped up on sudafed, I am probably getting his position all wrong, so look it up for yourself.)
https://abcnews.go.com/US/words-kill-gu ... d=48093522
On the flip side, he recently got into with Popehat tossing Alex Jones off the internet, this thread is interesting, because Popehat is advocating censorship and Randazza is advocating compelled speech and each thinks he is right to do so. (Popehat as usual is wrong, because the compelled speech is that of a corporation carrying Jones' packets, an infinitesimal part of their bandwidth, hardly the huge freedom of a association issue Popehat makes it out to be.)Carter's texts 'abhorrent' but were they criminal?
Under the First Amendment, speech cannot be criminalized, except in situations where the speech itself is a crime, such as hate speech or solicitation, Longwood, Florida-based First Amendment attorney Lawrence Walters told ABC News. Walters added that the prosecutors in Carter's case essentially tried to criminalize her words and speech.
Walters said that while "there's no question" that the speech used in Carter's texts was "abhorrent," there's no statute that says you can't encourage someone to commit suicide.
"The First Amendment is there to protect vile and repugnant speech," he said.
The ACLU said in a statement that Carter's conviction "exceeds the limits" of criminal law and "violates free speech protections by the Massachusetts and U.S. Constitutions."
"Mr. Roy's death is a terrible tragedy, but it is not a reason to stretch the boundaries of our criminal laws or abandon the protections of our constitution," said Matthew Segal, legal director of the ACLU of Massachusetts.
Massachusetts does not have a law making it illegal for someone to encourage or persuade an individual to commit suicide, Segal added.
Did Carter's texts incite Roy's suicide?
Prosecutors argued that Carter was reckless when she told Roy to get back in the vehicle, saying that Roy didn't want to die, and therefore Carter caused his death.
Marc John Randazza, free speech attorney and president of the First Amendment Lawyers Association, disagreed with the ACLU, saying that the First Amendment "does not simply say that if words are involved, you cannot be held responsible for their consequences."
"That's not how it works," he said. "If that's how it works, how would we ever have the crime of extortion? Extortion is always made of words unless you're really good at inferring what you're gonna do to someone."
Randazza cited the 1969 Supreme Court decision in Brandenburg v. Ohio, which states that speech can be prohibited if it is directed at inciting or producing imminent lawless action" and if it is likely to incite or produce such action.
Randazza said that if there is "clear and present danger of imminent lawless action, and you incite that action, and you know that your incitement will cause that action, you can be held liable for that."
He added that Carter's case isn't different from standing next to a suicidal person on a bridge and encouraging them to jump.

Little Paul's hypocrisy is amazing, isn't it? Can you imagine the sputtering indignation and rage he'd spew if one of his enemies hired Randazza? Guilt by association is the best kind of guilt, he would scream. But when it's his copious ass on the line, it's needs must as the devil drives.
I wonder what excuses roll through his tiny mind when he reads this stuff here and cowardly refuses to defend himself. I bet they're the best stuff he's ever come up with.

Have you ever paused to consider whether wanting an extant western/white demographic to continue to define a specific country AND/OR holding that the “western way”/culture is subjectively superior to competing variants is the same as believing dirty nigger black blood be dirty - and they need to fall under the white overlords whip hand?free thoughtpolice wrote: ↑Fuck no!
