One Olympic games, just one where women have to compete with trans-women and every feminist will become a TERF. Ah but what a glorious sight it will be. I for one am looking forward to the women's boxing.

A farmer purchases a young cock. As soon as he gets it home it fucks all 150 of the farmers hens. The farmer is impressed. At lunch the cock again screws all 150 hens.
Next day, it’s fucking the ducks and the geese too. Sadly later in the day, he finds the cock laying half dead on the ground and vultures circling overhead.
Farmer says”Serves you right! you horny bastard!”
The cock opens one eye, points at the sky and says”Shhh... they’re about to land!”
That's a Jake Thackray song. I'm in work so I can't access YouTube, but look up "The Bantam Cock".
The lyrics go:

It was a grand upstanding bantam cock,
So brisk and stiff and spry,
With a springy step and a jaunty plume
And a purposeful look in his eye,
His little black blinking eye, he had

I took him to the coop and introduced him
To my seventeen wide-eyed hens
He tupped and he tupped as a hero tupped
Then he bowed from the waist at them all and then
He upped and he tupped them all again, he did

And then upon the peace of my ducks and my geese
He rudely did intrude
With glazed eyes and open mouths
They bore it all with fortitude
And a little bit of gratitude, they did

He jumped my giggling guinea-fowl
And thrust his attentions upon
My twenty hysterical turkeys, and
A visiting migrant swan
And the bantam thundered on, he did

He ravished my fan-tailed pigeons and
My lily-white columbines
And while I was locking up the budgerigar
He jumped my parrot from behind
She was sitting on my shoulder at the time

Then all of a sudden, with a gasp and a gulp,
He clapped his hands to his head
Fell flat on his back with his toes in the air
My bantam cock lay dead
And the vultures circled overhead, they did

What a champion brute, what a noble cock,
What a way to live and to die
I was digging him a grave to save his bones
From the hungry buzzards in the sky
When the bantam opened up a sly little eye

He gave me a grin and a terrible wink
The way that rapists do
He said "you see them big daft buggers up there?
They'll be down in a minute or two,
They'll be down in a minute or two."

(Thackray is also the source of the "crunchy pies" joke.)

But if you look at 2016 numbers the trends is as I suggested. There are more people in the higher brackets.
You mean, under Obama?
I never said Obama didn't manage the economy reasonably well. Long steady and relatively slow growth. This was pretty good for most folks including me. Trump seems to be heating the economy which may be good in the short run and bad in the long run. I have always maintained this. I have only been posting the Trump meme for the fun of it. My theory is that Trump is pretty smart and wants to help his chances of re-election by bragging about the good economy. He is gonna work really hard to have something to brag about in about 2.5 years. He wants to win and the only way to win is to get re-elected.

Obama wasn't all that bad. We do already have a great deal of debt and little to show for it. His economic policy was a bit to socialist for me and he didn't get the growth he could have. I also got sick of his poor handling of race issues and his fucking up the middle east (even more than Bush had fucked it up)..... but that's another topic. Haha

This interview was amazing. Peterson is masterful here.
He was masterful. And she loved it. Frustrated and angry at being dominated, sure, but I'm confident that certain parts of her anatomy were feeling otherwise. Q
ED JP.
He actually smiled much more than he normally does. Hilarious bit where he stumps her on the "causing offence" aspect.
One thing about Petersen, which differs him from a lot of the other critics of SJWs and related stuff
is that he , for better or worse, as well as identifying problems, he has a guru- like ready made self help type solution - products
and a while range of counter measures. Not really for me, but I reckon a lot of younger people will take up
what he offers.
Hie new book was being flashed up during the interview, though they didnt refer to it.

Brilliant argument John D. It just proves that Trump isn't a malignant narcissist that is lapsing into senility.
Just answering the question... yes... I think it is entirely possible that thousands and thousands of psychiatrists are completely wrong about this and many... many... many other topics. Actually, I think most headshrinkers are wrong about almost everything they say.
Wow, John, I'm guessing that either you didn't like what your psychiatrist had to say, or you felt his bill was too high.

Uhm...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replication_crisis
The fount of all truth wrote:According to a 2016 poll of 1,500 scientists reported in the journal Nature, 70% of them had failed to reproduce at least one other scientist's experiment (50% had failed to reproduce one of their own experiments). These numbers differ among disciplines:[5]

chemistry: 90% (60%),
biology: 80% (60%),
physics and engineering: 70% (50%),
medicine: 70% (60%),
Earth and environment science: 60% (40%).
How the hell can it be so high in chemistry? That's about as exact as you can get.

(Unless the researchers trying to reproduce are clumsy bastards)
Just a guess, chemistry experiments are easier to reproduce and the failed replication comes from the fringes of the field, not the foundations (I don't think covalent bonding is going to be called into question tomorrow). The situation in psychology is not at all like that, with things like implicit bias (as Shatterface points out) and social priming failing to replicate despite being accepted as uncontroversially true by most in the field. For about five years now I've been reading about how dire this all is, which is why I wasn't even sure if Freethoughtpolice was being serious asking if John D could name things the community was wrong about. It gets worse if you're talking about diagnosing mental disorders.

"Do you sometimes get very happy and then very sad?"

"Well, I got a promotion 6 months ago and that made my really happy, but we had a loss in the family after that, so yeah. I was really sad."

"Classic bipolar disorder."

From what I recall it's the second book that has a time travel plot.

Between enjoying Adams and Harrison you are showing yourself to be a man of a certain age and type. What can I say - I spent many happy hours reading their stuff too.

The Atlantic calls the Aziz Ansari allegation "revenge porn". Damn right.

"...what she and the writer who told her story created was 3,000 words of revenge porn. The clinical detail in which the story is told is intended not to validate her account as much as it is to hurt and humiliate Ansari. Together, the two women may have destroyed Ansari’s career, which is now the punishment for every kind of male sexual misconduct, from the grotesque to the disappointing."
I was curious what the reaction at Shakesville would be. Last year McEwen took a dump on Kumail Nanjiani's movie The Big Sick, because in it(and it's based on his life)he chooses a white woman over the Pakistani women his parents were trying to arrange a marriage with, so I knew Ansari's ethnicity wasn't going to protect him. On the other hand though, Ansari was in the feminist utopia sitcom Parks & Recreation, so I thought that might help him. McEwen chooses to defer to a Pakistani woman blogger and excerpted this:
The defenses of Ansari that I have seen from within the South Asian community, in more casual settings, similarly fail to consider the experiences of South Asian women, and focus on the way these accusations stain the reputation of our culture as a whole. ...We cannot have conversations about how Ansari's behavior was problematic when we don't discuss healthy sexuality in our communities. I am not blaming South Asians, or the broader Asian American community, for Ansari's behavior. Rather, I am suggesting that it is an opportunity for us to actively participate in the broader American conversation happening about sexual assault, sexual harassment, and healthy sexuality through an intersectional lens that considers the experiences of South Asians who are not heterosexual cisgender men."
Won't someone think of the South Asian culture?
Seemed like a cop out on McEwen's part, but then I found this:
McEwen wrote:There are already a number of reprehensible thinkpieces in response to Grace's account, to which I won't be linking, and an outpouring of rape apologia and victim-blaming, predominantly along the lines of demanding to know why Grace didn't leave — despite the fact that she did, and, if she hadn't, the story almost certainly would have ended much differently — and/or mischaracterizing the events she details as "a bad date" or "a date gone wrong" or some other equally minimizing euphemism that makes it sound like Ansari spilled soup in her lap.

Suffice it to say, I find the (entirely unsurprising yet thoroughly enraging) defense of Ansari cruel and unwarranted. Many of these defenses don't even bother disputing the details; instead, the defenders simply say that they don't constitute anything worth a public accounting.

That apologia, however, necessitates ignoring one significant detail that reveals what's described isn't just "a misunderstanding." It's here, in the juxtaposition of these two moments:
Grace says she spent around five minutes in the bathroom, collecting herself in the mirror and splashing herself with water. Then she went back to Ansari. He asked her if she was okay. "I said I don't want to feel forced because then I'll hate you, and I'd rather not hate you," she said.

[...]

Ansari instructed her to turn around. "He sat back and pointed to his penis and motioned for me to go down on him. And I did. I think I just felt really pressured. It was literally the most unexpected thing I thought would happen at that moment because I told him I was uncomfortable."

Soon, he pulled her back up onto the couch. She would tell her friend via text later that night, "He [made out] with me again and says, 'Doesn't look like you hate me.'"

When I read Grace's story, I remembered all the calculations I had to make in a moment, when a person I liked did something I hated, and how difficult they were to process as my brain was overwhelmed with vibrating alarm: Do I want this? No. Can I stop it? Yes. Can I stop it safely? Not sure. What should I do? Don't know. Do I still want him to like me? Yes. No. I don't know. Can I move? No. Maybe. Is he going to get mad at me? Probably. Is he going to hurt me? I don't think so. Not here.

I was 15, and I already knew deep in my bones that women who disappoint men are at risk of being harmed.

So I guess Ansari was going to kill her if she didn't submit. Not sure if that's Islamophobic or not,

I'm looking backwards at it as I watched it a week or so back. There's some good material there but it's no City of Death. Pennant Roberts also directed the earlier Douglas Adams story The Pirate Planet and he doesn't really have a feel for comedy (he's great at depressing stuff like Survivors) so let's his actors over-act because he thinks that's funny. Michael Hayes (Androids of Tara, City of Death) would have been a better choice.

For some reason it is presented as a feature length story (2hrs 10mins or so) instead of as individual episodes, which is inexcusable. On the plus side there's a lot more complete footage than I expected and a rather lovely moment towards the end that brought a lump to my nerdy throat.

It's better than the novelisation though. Gareth Roberts decided to pad out the two human protagonists by introducing a romance and he also seems to believe the only reason that any man would offer another man a lift is that he wants to have sex with him so a nameless extra is transformed into a gay mummy's boy who calls strangers 'Honky Tonk'. Roberts's knowledge of 70s gay culture seems to have been culled from Dick Emery and Are You Being Served.

Jezebel's Ansari piece was mainly regret the piece was done poorly by a two bit startup version of Jezebel and not by Jezebel. Because of that Ansari manages to slip the noose and worse, forces other feminists to defend him, but no, not Jezebel! Na gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent.

Surely it's very bad medical ethics for psychiatrists to en masse publicly diagnose someone, especially someone they have no involvement in treating? It brings the entire profession into disrepute.
Oh, please. The "Goldwater Rule" was put in place by the APA to avoid another brouhaha. It's not set in stone. The 60,000 mental health professionals who've opined that trump is mentally ill have done so because they earnestly fear he will do serious harm to the nation.

And shrinks make assessments all the time without them being a formal diagnosis. So do ordinary people, and it's not really that hard to do. Fuck, how many times has the Pit 'diagnosed' the Baboons?

Declaring that, based on your observations from afar, trump is not mentally ill, is itself a diagnosis. So fuck off all of you who've done that here.
Having said that, I've had my own experience with mental health professionals, and I think that, while some of it is useful, scientifically the field is built on sand. Advances in neuroscience is going to make today's psychiatrists look like witch doctors or homeopaths in decades to come
There's still shit out there, but there's also a lot of good psychology now based solidly on brain science and behavior, with rigorous clinical evaluation to quantify effectiveness.

I've read Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, where Douglas Adams recycled most of the ideas from it.
From what I recall it's the second book that has a time travel plot.
No, the second - The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul - was about Norse gods.

Matt, I completely agreed with you until I read jet laggs post about how he has been reading about psychology for the past 5 years and has discovered how psychiatrists diagnose bipolar disease.
"Do you sometimes get very happy and then very sad?"

"Well, I got a promotion 6 months ago and that made my really happy, but we had a loss in the family after that, so yeah. I was really sad."

"Classic bipolar disorder."
See how stupid psychiatrists are? Smart people like jet_lagg realize they just have disordered thetans. :ugeek:

If you hadn't heard about the replication crisis in psychology before (and your rhetorical question was absurd if you had) then yes, you haven't been paying any attention for the past 5 years. Meanwhile if you believe Scott Alexander isn't a complete liar then patients really are diagnosed in this kind of haphazard way. Google for psychiatrist created questionnaires to test for bipolar and you get gems like these:
At times I am MUCH more talkative or speak MUCH faster than usual.

There have been times when I was MUCH more active or did MANY more things than usual.

I get into moods where I feel VERY speeded up or irritable.
Obviously anyone who answers yes to these is suffering from mental illness. :bjarte:

One taking out all the men would be a bold, empowering statement of female independence. Removing the womynz is misogynistic. Although considering the women in the last Star Wars movie, removing them might have been doing womynz a favor.

But then this is PZ Meyers, who seems to believe that email spammers are directly targeting him rather than sending out millions of these things at random to all blog owners:

It's quite sad, Meyers has often written about how he used to code back in the early days of home/office computers, and how he would create machines from parts of others. Firstly, I don't dispute that clinical psychology needs to have more study and that many of the tenets in the practice haven't been solidly proven. It is a relatively young science and it tries to tackle a complex field that is notoriously difficult to test. There are some outliers in the field but there also is careful and rigorous work going, especially compared to social psychology, anthropology, gender studies, etc.
About Alexander's article, he begins:
[Epistemic status: Pieced together from memory years after the event. I may have mis-remembered some things or gotten them in the wrong order. Aside from that – and the obvious jokes – this is all true. I’m being deliberately vague in places because I don’t want to condemn anything specific without being able to prove anything.]
He picks out 3 questions from the test that you quote that are clearly not that useful. He doesn't say how long the test is and doesn't describe what the rest of it is like but he does say he think it is a poor test and he would like to do a study on how useful it is. He doesn't say that most screening tests or diagnostic tests are bad. He says this one is. I would bet that he would disagree with John D's assertion that most psychiatrists are wrong all of the time, which was what I was addressing yesterday.
He also writes:
There was a study that supposedly proved this test worked. But parts of it confused me, and it was done on a totally different population that didn’t generalize to hospital inpatients. Also, it said in big letters THIS IS JUST A SCREENING TEST IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR DIAGNOSIS, and everyone was using it for diagnosis.
When he says "everyone was using it for diagnosis" that sounds like hyperbole to me, but even if not, unless psychiatry is practiced much more differently in the US than here a single short test would be far from the only criteria that would be used for diagnosis of bipolar.
The patient is typically hospitalized for several weeks where they are observed and tested multiple times with relatively detailed tests that have been in common use for some time. There are also interviews with the patient and sometimes family and/or friends.
The rest of the article, 95% of it, was about his frustration in trying to set the criteria for a study of this screening test. I didn't take his point to be that all or most diagnostic tests are rubbish.
You write;
Obviously anyone who answers yes to these is suffering from mental illness. :bjarte:
No one believes that. If you believe that you are either really misinformed, really clueless or both.

Just a guess, chemistry experiments are easier to reproduce and the failed replication comes from the fringes of the field, not the foundations (I don't think covalent bonding is going to be called into question tomorrow).
I suspect (though I'm not a chemist), at least in the case of synthetic chemistry, that it's more a case of how chemists see replication. Whilst most of us would look at a chemical reaction and say we've reproduced the making of <product> if we got some of it at the end, chemists will only call it reproduced if they got a similar yield to the original experimenters - i.e. the original published experiment produced (say) 99% of the theoretical yield, and the replicators only got 60% - not reproduced.

And it can be hard to exactly replicate the published experiment, if details which turn out to be important are omitted from the paper (not necessarily for any sinister reason, simply because the scientists don't realise that those particular conditions are important. Have a look at:

Jet_lagg:
You recommended I google psychiatric tests to see how bad they are. My understanding is that the tests that are used as diagnostics are not published to the public. It seems that serious evaluations of tests are behind paywalls.
One point that should be made is that there are screening tests and diagnostic tests. The screening tests I gather are designed to help target which diagnostic tests to be used and not as a diagnosis in itself.
An example of a screening test in Psychology Today, not sure how much like a screening test a dr. might use:
https://www.psychologytoday.com/tests/h ... assessment
note the disclaimer:
This test is intended for informational and entertainment purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional diagnosis or for the treatment of any health condition. If you would like to seek the advice of a licensed mental health professional you can search Psychology Today's directory here.
My understanding is that diagnostic tests are typically much longer than the 60 questions here and more narrowly focused. Also they are administered by a professional.

That's part of it. I suspect that another part of it is that every synthetic chemical project requires some grunt work related to synthesizing precursors and other materials needed for the actual synthesis route or reactions under investigation. Chemists are actively looking to use other people's reactions to improve their routine preps, so chemists routinely try reactions that they find in the literature. Experiments in medicine and biology are not reproduced for this reason so it may be easier to hide the shoddy results.

Another factor is the under described or erroneously described reaction. It can be hard to describe (or even know) all the factors that are important for carrying out a particular reaction. Reactions can be tricky to carry out, and often can be effected by things like the humidity of your lab air, how well you dried your chemicals, whether there were trace materials in your reagent that you didn't realize, how well you excluded air from your reaction and so on. People often talk about some of these things in the experimental section of their papers, but it can be difficult to relate exactly how a reaction should be carried out. The "hidden catalyst" is also a particular problem in some areas. I listened to a talk given by Bob Grubbs a few years ago (an organometallic chemist who specializes in Ruthenium catalyzed olefin metathesis reactions) and he related how he will often ask his students to repeat results with new catalysts in other labs to exclude the possibility that trace amounts of other (highly active) catalysts from his lab are actually doing the work.

It was fun watching her fizzing at the bunghole - a couple of times she started smoothing her skirt, and then in the last few minutes she did the wide-eyes come-on. He, on his part, was trying to suppress his mischievous recognition of the fact he gave her a big wide-on, and signally failed to hide his smirking.
