It's surprising, given all the Trump drama that could have been milked for easy clicks in these months.

Perhaps not top 5 material, but I'll throw in a mention for Léolo, a hard to classify movie that involves a poor Sicilian immigrant boy in Montréal with a vivid imagination. I can't deal with a liver (dead, alive, human, pork or beef) without thinking of him. Probably would beat a sea slug if Peezus would let himself try it out. Plus, it was that movie's soundtrack that turned me on to Tom Waits Cold, Cold Ground and Ramirez' Missa Creola.

The SocJus movement is just a big waste of time and energy spent in outrage after outrage trivial bullshit like "sexist video games" or "bigotry in Hollywood movies" or "gendered toys" or trying to analyze any interaction between anyone according to Critical Theory.
Meanwhile any worthwhile human rights cause is either poisoned by identity politics or ignored outright.
There are people who really care about human rights, but it's not the SocJus, they're more likely to be a motley crew of anti-identitarian leftists, libertarians, largely apolitical single-issue activists, and moderates.
The leftist intellectual elites in universities prefer discussing Star Wars or Doctor Who or LARPing as bolshevik street warriors.

Today when the topic came up, I told a woman--who isn't particularly SJW, kind of middle of the road--that I was a little tired of the "turn male roles into female roles" trend, re: Dr. Who. That was enough for her to say "You don't sound very happy." Normally I'm pretty closed mouthed about such things around people I work for or with, but on this occasion, I was a bit fed up. Not that I'm partial one way or another. Actually, I don't give a shit who plays Dr. Who; it's heresy, but I've never followed the show. It's just that I don't see a female taking over a TV role as any kind of progressive step for women. If it empowers girls, then axiomatically, doesn't it disempower boys? And aren't we supposed to be helping boys? I don't see the sin of creating a gendered role. I don't see how making all the ghostbusters women does anything but discomfit people who picture them as men. Do we need to make James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Indiana Jones women? How about just leaving them as male fictional characters?
Anyway, I don't see the great significance of any of it.
I showed this to a relative, who worked in Australia's Immigration Department for 40 years. They says this is exactly the same conclusions Australia came to, although it's still something of a third rail in Australian politics and incompletely addressed. Australia is largely saved by being harder to get to.

Here is a talk by Andrew Klaven (who was recently on Dave Rubin's show):

Some of his points are reasonable enough - ie that he does not want to exclude leftist filmmakers, but have more of a balance.
But when he talks about spotting the trope of a Republican senator speaking against homosexuality in public but getting caught out in private - I think he is a bit off. This is not a person that represents all christians - but who represent those in power who are telling other people how they should behave.
Sometimes things are cliches for a reason - and a bit of hypocrisy makes an efficient way to tell a story (or to push a narrative). eg a plot point could be an environmentalist that with a large carbon footprint. In some cases having people pretending to be what they are not, or just hiding something is essential to the plot - for example in a murder mystery.
Then towards the end he name checks 'Grand Theft Auto' - and though he does not go into detail - it feels like familiar territory. It would be much better for any would be censor to make the case why and how such media is harmful before calling for anything to be done about it.

If I had to speculate, I'm guessing the teenage girls gobbed-off at her and she had a go about it. I don't believe for a minute all their shit about the guy apparently deciding to enjoy some ultraviolence while on a night out with his girlfriend, but I'm willing to accept I'm wrong.
Firstly, he's a Pole, dating a black woman. That reveals some conviction of character (it's a fairly conservative, very white country) so it's unlikely he turned into some sort of confused, raging racist when he got to England. Secondly, he's educated; an architect, not some plumber that hates the darkies.
He is of course getting harassed by proponents of the religion of peace on Twitter.

I am frequently disappointed too.
But a key thing to remember is that Dr. Who was originally created as a children's show. That is the target curve for how far they will go in story lines. You just have to accept it for what it is, and not expect it to be more. Yes it has plenty of untapped potential. But it will remain untapped until someone creates an adult version. So essentially canning the police box & name.
Isn't Rick and Morty an adult version of Dr. Who? It takes the basic concept. You have this godlike, space-traveling, dimension-hopping, weirdo going on adventures with his naive companion. The difference is it's animated so you don't need to worry about a miniscule effects budget. Also you're allowed to have an episode where the heroes accidentally turn most of the earth's population into grotesque mutants and solve the problem by just going to one another dimension similar to theirs, letting their duplicates die in a lab accident, and then taking over their lives.

The characters are visually based off Back to the Future, but the concept isn't. The closest they come to time travel is when they freeze everything for a few months and end up fracturing reality.

I’m cautiously ecstatic. I’m so happy that, finally, a woman is playing the Doctor. I’m hoping that this will be a stepping stone to a more diverse set of actors playing the Doctor in the future (could you imagine Laverne Cox as the Doctor? OMG!).

Interesting post on gender here that attempts to disprove the gender spectrum idea by showing how absurd it is:
If there's truth to the spectrum idea then it's cis people, like me, that are the special snowflakes. Come on! :)
Given that height really is a spectrum, and the binary labels are ascribed comparatively, only the handful of people at either end of the spectrum can be meaningfully labelled Tall or Short. The rest of us, falling along all the points in between, are the non-binary height people, and we are typical. In fact, it is the binary Tall and Short people who are rare and unusual. And if we extend the analogy to gender, we see that being non-binary gendered is actually the norm, not the exception.

I didn't find it to be overly SJW-laden either. The race-swapped Flash because [blah blah blah, tired, stale white male characters], but other than that nothing stood out as obvious pandering. Also a 61% drop for the second week isn't a failure. Thor 2 dropped by nearly that much. Captain America 2 dropped 51%. Homecoming has grossed in two weeks double what Ghostbusters (a movie I do think was hurt by identity politics) did in its full lifetime. They're working on a sequel already no doubt.

The primary issue with many superhero movies is that they feel it is necessary to retell the entire origin story over & over again with each new actor. It would be far more enjoyable if they either just picked up where they left off, or told a story from the middle of the super hero's life. Everyone knows who batman, spiderman and superman are. The origin stories are well beaten horses. Way too many cool supervillians that they never get to.
