Absolutely. The math taught in American schools won't be used by 95% of the students. I'm reminded of the SMBC comic. "Will we ever use any of this algebra?" "You won't, but one of the smart kids might."

To be fair, Brain Force isn't some homeopathic sugar pill. It does contain a couple of ingredients which have some scientific evidence supporting them helping with memory formation and brain function. It also has some caffeine related ingredients and some other stuff which relieves stress. And of course, if that doesn't work there is always the placebo effect and it's better for you than a can of Red Bull. Probably not worth $40 but at least it contains no soy.Sulman wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 5:48 amBrive1987 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2017 9:44 pmThe wisdom of the masses.VickyCaramel wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2017 9:14 pmI was just driving the point home hoping we will get a response. It will be interesting to see if Kirb can prove Academic Agent wrong.
My husband seems to benefit from taking vitamins, mostly Iron and Zinc, it may be the placebo effect but if it works it works. The occasional glass of stout and a rare steak on saturday seems to help too, I'll get him a pocket knife for Christmas to boost his testosterone, job done.

I wasn't paying close attention, but am I right in saying that Lindsay Shepherd was slated for showing a Jordan Peterson video without rigorously challenging those ideas...
...shortly after Jordan Peterson disinvited Faith Goldy from a panel because she was a guest on an alt-right livestream and didn't rigorously challenge those ideas?
Slightly embarrassing!

It's just a coincidence I'm sure. The newspaper had been embroiled in controversy the same day after profiling a Nazi sympathiser - leading to complaints it had "normalised" the views of a white nationalist.
However, Twitter has not indicated that the two events are linked.

Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
I've mentioned before how as a child I was very into the whole ancient astronaut thing, and how it eventually led me to skepticism and real science. Back in my Peace Corps days there were libraries of books stocked by other volunteers in every Peace Corps house. I found an ancient astronaut book from the early 70's I think it was called In Search of Immortality(I've googled it, but can't find it)I remember the title because it was ironic as the book's author died before it was completed and his wife finished it and published it. Much of the book focused on the Maya, concluded that they were aliens, and returned to their home planet when they "vanished." It was good for a laugh.
I just got back from a trip to the Yucatan(Mexico-Belize-Honduras)and toured a few Mayan ruins. Ruins are everywhere down there. Some were fairly recent discoveries. On the way back from one ruined city, the dirt road passes right next to a pyramid so overgrown with brush that I didn't initially notice it on the way to the ruins we were going to visit. Our guide said that that pyramid was on a farmer's land and belonged to him and has never been explored by archeologist. Yucatan is geologically and environmentally much like Florida. It's very flat. Whenever you see a green hill in the distance, the chances are high that it is a pyramid or other ruined structure.
The reason I brought up that ridiculous book from the 70's is because two separate tour group guides felt it necessary to tell the tourists that the Mayans did not vanish in UFO's, that there were still millions of them in Central America, and that they had just abandoned their cities due to prolonged drought, wars, and the failure of the political system of the priest-kings. I thought that really showed that there is still a need for a skeptic's movement, one that still focuses on pseudoscience rather than on intersectionality.

It goes like this ladies.... 1) first time he puts his hand on your leg you tell him to stop. 2) The second time he does it you tell him you with slap him in the face if it does it again and you also tell EVERYONE in the office what he did. 3) The third time he does it you slap him in the face and call the police. He said sorry, and then did it again, about seven times. He finished by saying: “I’ll need to report myself for sexual harassment now.”
This shit is pretty fucking easy.... or ... did you really like the attention.... just a bit.... and you wanted to lead him on so he would like you more? And you were an inexperienced volunteer who was trying to suck up to a bunch of veterans so you could jump ahead in line? What the fuck.... I really hate most people.

Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
The universal outrage in response to that New York Times Nazi piece has been eye opening. I knew I'd drifted far from mainstream opinion the past 5 years or so, but I didn't realize just how ridiculously far. I saw exactly one response out of hundreds that agreed with me. The article doesn't normalize anything. That already happened when a generation born after nearly all the holocaust survivors were already dead learned that a "Nazi" is anyone to the right of Mao. What the article does is illustrate the banality of evil and give you some insight into how people might find their way towards Nazism. Unless it's a time of war and you're planning on defeating your opponents by killing them I don't see any use in dehumanization, which is what those complaining about normalization are really asking for. Not that many of them would admit it.

Don Bourke was a major Australian TV dude in the late 1980s. Turns out he was a sexist pig, seemingly with metal health issues coupled to power.
The entire force of Australian female journalists and TV personalities, the resources of our national broadcaster, his old network, Fairfax Media and the twitterverse has just descended on him like FtB on fucking steroids. It is awe inspiring to watch modern day heroines and yesterday's victims chase, club and dispatch their target. He is no doubt a bad man and he is equally no doubt headed for breakdown and/or suicide.

Haw! I should've know better. With the new sugardaddy locked in, suddenly there's the old chair and bookcase she used to use for props.
