I find moderate civic nationalism to be appealing in that, "Hey, we are all on the same team. Let's all move forward together. We will all be winners."

Whereas racial separatism/nationalism or even supremacy pits races against each other into zero sum games of it being either "us" or "them."

Of course civic nationalism taken too far (to the point that people don't question government) is a recipe for disaster. But I think the US has the right mix of ripping on the president, burning flags, and taking pot shots at our politicians as points of pride.

The problem is that the arguments get taken to an extreme in an effort to virtue signal.

You get the "no border" people. You get the "no assimilation" people, the "culture = white" arguments.

The basic starting point is:
