Re: The Refuge of the Toads
So does this mean we don't have to pay for the sex change operation for Manning? If so, I'd like to volunteer to complete the surgery free of charge. I think I have a rusty bayonet around here somewhere.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
A very interesting article quoted by the SteersBot here, hat tip for once.Steersman wrote:
Here it is:
Despite recent media hysterics the debate on NATO is not new either. Robert Gates, a realist himself, and as Cold War hardened as it gets, said the exact same thing in 2011. In one of the most provocative speeches given by a top American diplomat to a bunch of hapless Europeans, Gates said presciently, that it will be increasingly hard to justify to future American electorates, leaders and taxpayers, why the U.S. should pay the lion’s share in securing a continent, when the continental leaders are not even willing to pay 2 percent of their GDP in their defense budgets.
Only 5 countries, out of 22, contribute the minimal requirement for NATO upkeep, which includes US, UK, Poland, Greece and Estonia. Belgium, the Islamist hub of Europe, contributes 0.85 percent. Naturally, when countries talk of the threat posed by lack of Intelligence gathering, or the rise of Russia, it sounds hollow and hypocritical. How threatened can Lithuania, Latvia and Germany possibly feel while simultaneously showing that they are unwilling to pay their minimal share?
for those who still research on nation-state interactions, grand strategy, power politics and security, there are two bafflingly persistent myths in international politics, which although repeatedly disproved, are still parroted by an echo-chamber of journalists, think tankers and politicians. One myth is that alliances, once formed, are inviolable, and sacrosanct. Another myth is that ideological alliances are the most stable. Both of these assertions are historically untrue.
I'd add: try to give the short end of the stick to the Saudis and other Gulf States. The real enemy today are muslim supremacist groups which are turning Turkey into a theocracy, launching projects of invasions and radicalizing muslim communities in the west all why the claim to be our "allies".Here’s a simple word of advice to the European leaders and policy elites. An easy way to maintain an alliance is to demonstrate commitment through investment. Cut down on social spending, cut down on idiotic and redundant research like gender gaps in NATO forces, and formulate a wartime plan to channel resources towards defence. Spend less on bureaucratic and bloated command structures and more on manufacturing tanks and hardwares, less on open door migrant aid, and more on Mediterranean surveillance.
One of the primary interests of every liberal democratic country is to maintain their liberal democratic status. Groups whose goal is to destroy democracy and try to push for theocracy cannot be tolerated. We're at war with muslim supremacists, a war which we can't lose. We should stop financing and partnering up with those who train and finance groups whose goal is to take over our countries. And no, those groups aren't just the Islamic State, they're all muslim supremacists.

Apples and oranges. Manning turned over a massive volume of documents, not just ratting out illegal activities....you have a very peculiar idea of what constitutes "treason". Did Mark Felt commit treason against the POTUS when he passed information about Nixon's dirty tricks to Bob Woodward?

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
@Aneris Thank you for elaborating on your position on those drunk Palistinian youths who tossed those firebombs onto the synagogue. Judicial discretion in punishments is something most judges here in the US used to have a lot more of than the do now, and that's something I've often lamented. My brother, now retired, used to preside over a courtroom for lesser offenses than these and he was very kind, and really hated having to give certain automatic punishments to people who needed a break. It's easy for me to see him doing what your guy did, so thanks for the heads up on that info.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
There is a difference between blowing the whistle on specific executive malfeasance and just dumping a shit load of classified docs with no specific rhyme or reason.
Manning speak also put people in danger.
If i've always disliked the ability of the president to pull these last minute pardons. It seems like an abuse of the office.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Wasn't a pardon. The sentence was commuted but the conviction wasn't overturned. Manning will never be able to vote again, for example.Spike13 wrote:There is a difference between blowing the whistle on specific executive malfeasance and just dumping a shit load of classified docs with no specific rhyme or reason.

And since the Dems as of late have no love for whistleblowers, it's almost certainly just a move meant to call Assange's bluff and see if he'll really allow himself to be extradited as promised.

Actually, scratch what I said. I misunderstood the voting rights of felons. Manning will probably be able to vote in the future. But it's still different from a pardon.

Indeed. But while I'm happy to see that you're now conceding that, at least, "we're at war with muslim supremacists", it might be more productive if you were to give some serious thought to the argument that we are in a defacto war with Islam itself:Kirbmarc wrote:Here it is ....

And Ayaan Hirsi Ali has, of course, said exactly that, although she has maybe mellowed a little since then. Not sure why, mind you, given the "tender mercies" she was apparently "blessed" with:
In a sauce-for-the-gander turning of tables, it might be wiser to consider castrating all Muslim males - might improve the chances of civilizing them ...
Don't know if you've seen my periodic discussion of Paul Berman's The Flight of the Intellectuals (highly recommended) which loosely covers the history of the Muslim Brotherhood and the grandson - Tariq Ramadan - of its founder. And Tariq seems to have credibility as some sort of a moderate but, in a pointed exchange in a debate with Nicolas Sarkozy, refused to outright condemn stoning women for adultery. Classy bunch: Mecca, nukes, etc.

It's also well documented that the Mafia came from places that were ruled by the Ottomans.Service Dog wrote:"You know I read a lot. Especially things that have to do with history. Dhimmitude is the same thing as the protection rackets of the gangsters. Ever noticed that mostly muslims and mafia are so big on kidnapping people and holding hostages?
It isn't so much genetic as toxic cultural residual trauma. :ugeek:

It is due entirely to the odious and rather problematic nature of Islam, although I'll concede that many others are as equally, and as easily, confused:

Kind of ironic that Miller is throwing stones at Manning when far more people died as a result, in part, of Miller's too hasty peddling of a hoax or fakenews created, intentionally or not, by the "Intelligence" Community.Miller became embroiled in controversy after her coverage of Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) program both before and after the 2003 invasion was discovered to have been based on the inaccurate information in the intelligence investigations,[1] particularly those stories that were based on sourcing from the now-disgraced Ahmed Chalabi.[2][3] The New York Times later determined that a number of stories she had written for the paper were inaccurate. ...

Not exactly a joke in the conventional sense, at least unless you're into gallows humour and the macabre. As I explained up-thread with a quote of Miller's Wikipedia article, she was throwing stones at Manning (?) for supposedly leaking info that supposedly led to the deaths of a bunch of people, yet she was responsible, in part, for peddling the hoax of weapons of mass destruction that actually did lead to the deaths of probably a substantially larger number.rayshul wrote:Happy birthday Brive

I think the sentiment is older, Reefer Madness was from 1936. Heroin on the other hand was legal until in the 50s...Bhurzum wrote:To be honest, I think a large part of the backlash against pot is not aimed at the drug itself - it's a knee-jerk aversion to any (sub)culture with roots in communism, pacifism or Eastern-leaning tendencies. Fucking hippies, they ruin everything.

Feck, ninjered by the boatsman.

I know this is a joke (come on, Sicily was never Ottoman territory, you're off of a couple of centuries at least) but the dhimmi system is a protection racket.free thoughtpolice wrote: It's also well documented that the Mafia came from places that were ruled by the Ottomans.
Dhimmitude is the same thing as the protection rackets of the gangsters. Ever noticed that mostly muslims and mafia are so big on kidnapping people and holding hostages?
It isn't so much genetic as toxic cultural residual trauma. :ugeek:
I don't think it had much influence on the Mafia (which was, as many mons are, a failed independendist/revolutionary movement) but it surely worked like an institutional system of intimidation for revenue.

You should join with Cavanaugh on a drinking night, beaming about Obama. You make a close fit, opinion-wise.mordacious1 wrote:Obama is dead to me (spits). I'm embarrassed to admit I voted for that moron twice (I almost didn't the second time). I hope the screen door DOES hit him on the way out. What a fucking fucker.
His greatest blunders: Extending the tax cuts on the rich. The handling of Ferguson. Encouraging violence against the police (oh yes, he did). ISIL/Syria. STABBING ISRAEL IN THE BACK and reversing 50 years of American Middle East Policy. Supporting Mohamed Morsi. And now, releasing a traitor.
What an asshole. I'm done with the Democratic Party. They can suck my balls.
