WWII was fought and won in the homefront industry. The US saved the entire world essentially by just outproducing the Nazis and Japanese by ridiculous margins. For example, we made more heavy bombers in one month than the Japanese produced throughout the entire war. Even the Russians were dependent on US industry to keep their logistics intact; we essentially subsidized the Russian Military by giving them thousands of trucks so that they could spend more on tanks.Spike13 wrote:TRGRD wrote:

I think that the Republicans are pretty much unelectable at the presidential level. To get past the primaries they have to have policies that the majority of the Americans wont wear in the main election. In the congress/senate, gerrymandering and voter id laws have made it difficult for the democrats to get a majority.Spike13 wrote:Got a bad feeling that a Bernie or Hillary win 16' will translate into a republican majority in 18'Sulman wrote:Curious about the details behind some of Bernie Sanders' ideas, I took a gander at his website.

I like Bernie; he seems like a sensible guy, but this disappoints me. I would worry not so much about Sanders himself, but some of the loony fringe he'll give license to.
No easy choices this election.
( similar to Clinton 92' Gingrich congress in 94')
Might just be better to elect a moderate republican and hope for some new blood in 20'
I think that the Republicans best chance is this election because Clinton is deeply disliked by a lot of people. If Sanders wins more delegates than Clinton but the super-delegates back Clinton. I think a lot of Democrat's wont vote out of disgust.

1a. Brains would have to be not only mostly not plastic and mostly not blank slates, but absolutely not at all plastic and not at all blank slates; brains, wherein our personality and behaviours are formed/created/developed, would have to be perfectly complete and fully developed during gestation. And obviously that's not the case.

2. The acceleration visually implied to the spaceship returning to Earth (when it leaves the Moon) appears to be so great as to crush any living tissue into jelly paste.

Well, it won't return to greatness by electing someone president. Doesn't matter who is running - America's problems are too great, presidents are too impotent, and we're too politically polarized. Voters are for the most part turned off by the status quo, which is what everyone but the (hopefully) unelectableTrump represents. Every election we elect or re-elect some promise-making babbling clone who in the long run does no real good for the U.S. Democrats, Republicans, it really doesn't matter, despite what fans of particular candidates say. They all feed at the same trough. These days it's about holding your nose and voting for the candidate you think will do the least damage. Hardly an inspiring state of affairs, and I really doubt things will improve.Keating wrote:I just want America to be great again.
Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Nice article: http://helensatheistblogs.blogspot.com/ ... t.html?m=1
Liberal feminist aims gradually shifted from the position:
"Everyone deserves human rights and equality, and feminism focuses on achieving them for women."
to
"Individuals and groups of all sexes, races, religions and sexualities have their own truths, norms and values. All truths, cultural norms and moral values are equal. Those of white, western, heterosexual men have unfairly dominated in the past so now they and all their ideas must be set aside for marginalised groups."
Liberal feminism had shifted from the universality of equal human rights to identity politics. No longer were ideas valued on their merit but on the identity of the speaker and this was multifaceted, incorporating sex, gender identity, race, religion, sexuality and physical ability. The value of an identity in social justice terms is dependent on its degree of marginalisation, and these stack up and vie for primacy. This is where liberal feminism went so badly wrong. When post-colonial guilt fought with feminism, feminism lost. When it fought with LGBT rights, they lost too.

Clones always seem to be a problem in SF. From the moment cells start to divide and differentiate there are epigenetic changes. When you insert the nucleus of a somatic cell into an ovum those changes are stripped out so the clone would not develop in exactly the same way. The clone would be very like the original but no more identical than an 'identical' twin.

Aiden was throwing a hissy fit because Mick apparently 'misgendered' xir.
If someone doesn't use your preferred pronoun 'they' it's not misgendering, it's miscounting.
How in the name of fuck is someone supposed to guess the gender of someone with a guy's name and an avatar that looks like Emo Philips fucked a monkey?

That was the one thing I liked about "The Boys from Brazil". They had the Hitler Clones placed in families very near to Adolph's, then went to work ensuring their lives matched. So at the right age, their fathers died, etc. The movie was, for the most part hilariously bad. A fight between old Gregory Peck and even older Olivier...man. But it was a brutal fight given the situation, and I will say Peck as Mengele was creepy as fuck. Even in a shit film, you were like..."That dude is just fucking evil. Like even Satan avoids this guy"John Greg wrote:dogen said:

But, given that they argued that "excluding a woman from the category ‘lesbian’ because she has a penis is [transphobic]", I'm not entirely sure that "dude" is not appropriate.Shatterface wrote:Aiden was throwing a hissy fit because Mick apparently 'misgendered' xir.
If someone doesn't use your preferred pronoun 'they' it's not misgendering, it's miscounting.
How in the name of fuck is someone supposed to guess the gender of someone with a guy's name and an avatar that looks like Emo Philips fucked a monkey?
In any case, I don't know whether you noticed, via the track-back, that they have apparently "flounced" off to their own blog to complain in detail about the "anti-trans hate speech" Mick is supposedly "enabling". I think it "unfortunate" that Mick has apparently deleted a few of the comments there, including a few by Cindy who supposedly is the prime suspect. As the previous quote of comments by both Malone and Walsh suggest, Aidan seems incapable of realizing, or unwilling to make the effort to do so, that a criticism of some members of a group is not a categorical accusation against all members in it.
Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Whereabouts is that conversation? I see both Malone and Walsh making an appearance in Nugent's thread, but I don't see those comments.Sunder wrote:God this Nugent situation just got way worse.
I did love this bit from Derek Walsh:
Sarah Malone:
Yeah transgender people often
No no no no no. Not “transgender people often”.
Not “transgender people”, just Aidan Rowe.
Not “often”, just in this particular instance.
Do you see the difference? Do you see why criticism of one person’s actions is not a criticism of the entirety of behaviour of a whole class of people? Do you see why one person’s behaviour can’t be excused, ignored or defended by appealing to the idea that the sort of person they are is unlikely to behave in such a way?
I suspect you don’t, and I believe it’s the same sort of category error that began this whole silly affair.

As to the claim of They is a pronoun, I refuse to contribute towards bastardising meaning in the English language anymore. The right to respect for delusional ideology is also delusional.

Never mind - guess I didn't get this memo: I hear you’re a trans-misogynistic hate speech supporter now, Michael ....Steersman wrote:Whereabouts is that conversation? While I sympathize with that view, as I think others have pointed out, "they" as a singular does seem to have some historical justifications. But I feel pretty much the same way as you do about "delusional ideology" when it comes to calling Bruce Jenner Caitlyn, and accepting that he got some "Woman of the Year" award. I might consider changing my mind after he's had his surgery (apparently not yet completed according to some recent reports) and returns that award.HunnyBunny wrote:As to the claim of They is a pronoun, I refuse to contribute towards bastardising meaning in the English language anymore. Nope. Did not have to. Pretty well know the script by now. Like I said earlier ... "raising awareness" = "mendacious cunt" making shit up. At some point in the future I might get blindsided by one of these emotionally/brain damaged induhviduals being truthful but I am not holding my breath.Bourne Skeptic wrote: Did you get to this part,
"In July 2015, university investigators found that John Doe 1 was “not responsible” for any rape, assault, abuse, harassment or retaliation. Ms. Leader unsuccessfully appealed the findings.
One of her lawyers, Alexander S. Zalkin, said in a telephone interview that they decided to file suit against the university for damages rather than sue the person she accused of assaulting her because of the “larger issue.”
Way too many of these toxic emotional disasters running around for me to spend much time on. At least right now because I want to get caught up on the 'Pit then do my dailys on FFXIV and spending some time reading about the twaddle some mendacious special snowflake dreamed up has a much lower priority than that.
What I really enjoy though is when one of the perpetrators of the current hysteria gets fucked over by the very processes they enable.
That said I might read it later. Right now FFXIV calls.
I know. :bjarte:

Yup my slow suicide.
Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Should be Casino. Pesci's character IRL (Tony Spilotro) stuck a guy's head in a vice until his eye popped out to get info out of him before killing him.Phil_Giordana_FCD wrote:Quick question: what's the movie? I thought it was casino, but I missed this part when I rewatched it. That's the crazy guy who shot some people in a bar then got tortured by Joe Pesci, right? (Nails in the bollocks, IIRC)
So, movie name please. I tend to mix my crime flicks.
