Also no one is talking about the times he laughs at what Watson is saying. No polite chuckles he gut laughs at one point.

I am not saying that is proof of anything but if you are going to analysis his behavior you have to take those laughs into account too. To do otherwise is just data mining.

The Force Unleashed had a somewhat better, more interesting plot and characters than The Force Awakens. Shame it was made into a video game instead of a movie.

The problem with Prometheus isn't that it leaves questions unanswered, it's that it answers the mysteries of Alien in a massively disappointing way.
I rewatched Prometheus a couple of nights ago. Once again, I enjoyed the music, the visuals, the design. And once again, I was yelling at the screen about the sheer stupidity of the characters. At every turn, they make the worst possible decisions.

That's the real issue with Prometheus, above and beyond the plot holes.

Major disappointment.

But the one question I left with was -- You have this spaceship that you can fly wherever you like, all the way to some alien planet, so how come you park half a mile away from the giant alien structure you want to explore, then ride dune buggies to it?
That might just be because it could be dangerous.

My problems were:

What the fuck did the prologue mean? It looked like the Engineer was introducing his DNA to a lifeless planet which I presumed was Earth. But that would have been billions of years ago while the derelict seems to be a few thousand years old.

That Eric Von Danikem shit with the cave paintings. From that they determined the location of this Engineer outpost? Why would they tell primative humans they had a base there? (The proto-Indo-European stuff made little sense either but at least they addressed the language issue)

Then there was the massive disappointment that the space jockeys were humanoid.

I hated tose retards who managed to get themselves lost and contaminated by alien tech.

The heroine having an alien abortion, stapling herself back together and still managing to carry out action scenes Jet Li might have struggled with.

The idiocy of rnning from a rolling spaceship instead of stepping to one side.

The pointless casting of a young actor as an old man.*

All this was more damaging than any unanswered questions about the origin of Engineers.

*I did think Guy Pierce might be rejuvenated which might have made the casting sensible; if he returns in the sequel as a younger clone that would make the casting make sense too.

Fassbender was terrific. There's some wonderful details but the overall story makes no sense.

And while I like the score much of it is repeated. If you ever listen to Jerry Gildsmith's complete score for Alien you'll realise how much of that Scott fucked up in the re-editing.

But now you tell me Guy Pierce was in it? I can't stand the fucker! He looks like a failed porn actor. The only movie where I found him fitting was The King's Speech, because he played whinny, nazi-loving David (Edward VIII), which suits him well.

I am not going to talk of your characterization of Rey because outside of the writer stating it, whether she is a Mary Sue is just an opinion and valid as any think else. It's the Kylo Ren part where you are really really off.

First off Kylo Ren is not a trained Sith Lord. A Sith Lord is not just a Jedi that becomes evil. Secondly Kylo Ren was not even a Jedi. He came under the influence of Snoke while training. He is has an awesome amount of force control but it's mostly raw talent. He is an immature child. The movie goes out of it's way to show you that. He has a position of power despite this and that is made clear how upsetting that is to the people around him.

As for the final battle. Kylo Ren was shot by Chewy. The movie made a point to let us know how powerful that stupid laser crossbow is of his and Ren gets a solid hit right in his side. There would be loss of blood plus I am sure at least his kidney is fucked. His core muscles are going to be fucked too. So even if he had great fighting skills, and the movie never said he did, he is a supreme disadvantage by the time he meets Rey in battle.
Those injuries might make him tougher in the sequels. Vader and Luke were more powerful post-cybernetics.

There's a mystery about her parents that has also been set up. Maybe she's Luke's daughter: that would make her a third generation Jedi.

This is the first in a projected series. It's not Star Wars where everything is answered, it's Empire where it's seeding mysteries to be answered in future movies.
I'm not buying it. It's the same reasoning that was rolled out for Prometheus when everyone complained it made no sense. "They're setting up the sequel." I say that's shit, and that it's not only possible but necessary for a good film to be self-contained while establishing itself in a larger story. Empire had clear arcs and a standalone story. You can watch that movie not knowing there were any other Star Wars films and it would still be fantastic. But setting aside that line of thought, I'd still think Rey being a complete Mary Sue was bad even if they had clearly explained why she was so powerful, simply because characters without any serious obstacle to overcome aren't very interesting.
The Force works in mysterious ways. :D

Besides, you don't know anything about Reys' history and she was certainly slamming the Falcon off the ground a few times while she was figuring out the controls. And, on top of that, judging from the dialogue she had with Solo about some previous owner screwing up the hyperdrive, it seems she has at least some previous knowledge of ships, and maybe of the Falcon herself.

Meh.....details, details. It is still a fun movie.

Hi All,

With Lsuoma's permission, I'm posting this anonymously. I was wondering if you could help?

I've written a track called "Social Justice Warriors" which is in the vein of those 1980s toy adverts cartoons (most notably 'Defenders of the Earth'). I was wondering if anyone felt like contributing some lyrics to the verses? I was hoping the verses could reference some notable SJW people/stereotypes/behaviours - anything really, as long as it ties in to the main theme of the song, along the lines of the chorus:

Social Justice Warriors
Fighting hard for the things that should worry us
Social Justice Warriors
Fighting crimes they've invented in their minds

If you could suggest some words for the other parts of the song that'd be great. If I do decide to use your lyrics you will be welcome to a co-credit on the song, or you can remain anonymous if you prefer - I'll PM you further down the line if needs be.

Thanks in advance!

Exactly, and I've said as much before.

The problem is you're not dealing with deep thinkers. The fact that many of them loathe libertarians almost instinctively yet use their arguments unknowingly attests to the fact that they've never given any serious thought to where their arguments come from. They'll often even recycle arguments from Christian conservatives who jointly claim that a secular nation with a majority Christian population is a "Christian" nation and that a despotic regime like Stalin's was "atheistic."

This is what happens when you construct your arguments ass-backward and aren't all that bright to begin with.

Mikey made a point in his video that while it seems ironic, the co-opting of skepticism by non-skeptics was not happenstance. It's always been populated with shallow thinkers who just want the skeptic cred without ever adopting the skeptic toolbox.

I thought that she had withdrawn her court case in regards to the restraining order a long time ago. However Enron & his lawyers were opting to proceed forward in an effort to set a precedent for the future.

In other words, she tried to walk away from the court fight she started, but Enron isn't going to let her get away with it.
My current understanding is there were two cases, one about a restraining order she got against gjoni that kept him from speaking about her and another was a criminal case she had persuaded a DA to make about criminal harassment.

The court case is about the restraining order. She has already dropped the restraining order which would ordinarily moot the case but the appeals court was petitioned to keep it going forward because it was so important to free speech to hear it out.

(at some point she tried to reestablish the restraining order in a different state but that was denied)

I believe what was most recently dropped was the criminal harassment charges.

But I am no lawyer, so take that with all the salt Quinn provided in her statement.

I really don't get this 'feminist kool-aid' shit.

The film has a strong female lead: that's it. That's all.

There's none of the 'patriarchy/rape culture/gender is a social construct' shit that characterises SJW feminism.

Rey's hardly the first female lead in a SF franchise.

Kind of uncomfortable to see the Christian symbols front and center as many of them are, arguably, as bad as many Muslims, but it's also hard not to see them as the point the spear, the thin edge of the wedge opening the door to some necessary conversations - so to speak. Happened to be searching for stuff here the other night and saw a conversation or two between you, Kirbmarc, and Korban, probably just after the Paris attacks. And you had said something to the effect that it was likely to get much worse before it gets better which certainly seems a plausible argument - at least unless more Muslims repudiate Islam, or we read the Riot Act to them, or we ban the religion and their further immigration. As I think the chances of the first are somewheres between slim and none - as suggested by this Facebook page of an American Muslim woman - the latter two seem the best bets; seems like Angola has the right idea there:

Maybe I'll run on that idea in the next election - I should have at least one vote from Scented Nectar. ;-)
Yep. :)
Hot diggety! Thank you! :banana-dreads: :flags-canada: Ever onward and upward! :-)
Scented Nectar wrote:Islam is a hate group. They promote actual violence, actual misogyny, and religious bigotry. There are very good grounds for banning it. Indeed. Some here, particularly those who make questionable claims to being skeptics, might want to take a close look at one of Nugent's fairly recent posts: Is Islam a religion of peace? It is an integrated religious, political and judicial ideology of social governance imposed by force. Interestingly, there seems to be some further debate on the question over there, maybe even in their Parliament - at least according to this tweet from Ashling O'Brien. I suggested the "Angolan" solution to her but it apparently hasn't found much favour (yet):

But hadn't realized that about Angola, although maybe a case of the less bad being the enemy of the more bad - so to speak.

:-) Definitely, particularly as I'm more of less of the same view. While I think there are some "problematic" aspects to its legalization, seems the cure is worse than the disease - like with alcohol which can ruin lives and which contributes to the mayhem on our highways but, maybe arguably, Prohibition was worse. But I'm seriously concerned about that boy (always talking, never listening) - think someone needs to get his attention, maybe with a 2x4 up alongside his ears - figuratively speaking of course, and show him the error of his ways. In any case, and to round out my election platform, in case Trudeau waffles and repudiates further, I would also repeal the current anti-prostitution law - really a rather barbarous perspective which is, where the rubber meets the road or in principle at least, not much different from ISIS throwing gays off roof tops. For a point of reference, some here might be interested in my comment on The Seattle Times post on sex-trafficking. :-)

Melissa McEwan is raging on Shakesville about the peaceful-ish end to the Malheur standoff:

[
Content Note: White supremacy] Cliven Bundy is under arrest and the "remaining occupiers of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge were expected to surrender Thursday morning on the 41st day of the standoff." Insert all the contempt on the planet here for the evident racist double-standard that affords white seditionists a peaceful surrender. Fuck.
That's funny. I heard they shot a guy last week. Apparently one dead isn't a high enough bodycount.

Add in that the engineer put DNA which then evolved over millions of years into a shape that was (virtually?) the same or similar to the original DNA. Completely shits on evolution and makes no sense at all. The DNA of this species becomes bacterial cells, then on through the ages until it finally comes full circle (or close to it, I've tried to forget that movie, so I may be wrong on this).

Plus, none of the characters were likable in any way. I was hoping the idiots would get killed in horribly painful ways - if we had to suffer through the movie, the least they could do is suffer in it.

Couldn't agree more. Also Elevatorgate, really? Fucking, fuck, fuck.

Must be SJW silly season.

At this rate I am going to have to stop lurking and actually contribute something.

Oh here, look: a sceptical look at gardening. More interesting than than crappy films or ancient SJW history.

I like the movie, but somehow I hate the actor. It's just one of those things.
Is it because his face moves like it's controlled via pulleys and nylon cables from across the room?
His specialty seems to be characters that are keeping it together on the surface, but are actually wound way too tight. So the pulleys and cables effect kind of works. I'm probably biased towards him because he's been in two of my favorite Memento and LA Confidential. He was also pretty good in HBO's adaptation of Mildred Pierce.

Yes, but are gravity waves actually useful for anything? Can they operate machinery? Are they nice to look at? You know, if I was running the universe, I wouldn't bother with gwavity waves - no, eewww. It's would have been tits, day one!

For the record, my mind is completely and ongoingly blown by the announcement. I feel as though I'm living in a different world. (I think having just watched Interstellar is contributing to this).

What am I missing on this story? Didn't we already think there must be some kind of gravity-wavy-thingy?

Wake me up when they finally announce the unified theory.... otherwise all this stuff is just proving what Einstein said 100 years ago.

Some of the politicians DO behave as though they've been bought off or are being extorted. I almost hope so, since that would at least mean they aren't simply so stupid that they can't see the dangers of islam. It's good you mentioned "figuratively speaking" above, since they probably wouldn't let you read the Pit in jail! :?

It's good you called them on their emotional fallacy type wording, but I'm surprised they let your comment stay.
