Let’s get real. Dawkins is the establishment. He still has all the clout and all the prestige. The leaders of most of the atheist/skeptic organizations are going to continue to suck up to him. The anti-feminists are obsessive and underhanded, and will continue to troll and do their best to undermine any effort to change the status quo. I’m already getting the flood of hatred on social media and email for this.
Nothing will change.
Most galling: I’m getting accused of ‘betraying atheism’ for…it’s not clear what for. Money? Glory? Fame? That’s the thing — I could have gotten much more of that by promoting the dudely white version of atheism. Sex? There’s this dumbass myth that guys only support feminism to get laid. It’s absurd. Supporting women’s autonomy is not a recipe for getting sex slaves. I’m also boringly monogamous, so even if it were true, I wouldn’t be taking advantage.
And then there’s the sad truth that victory for my cause of greater diversity in atheism is going to lead to my abandonment, as an obvious member of the privileged group. I’m going to die someday, and there will be raucous cheering by the regressive side, and a sigh of relief at another obstacle gone by the side I’m championing.
And that’s OK, because I’m an atheist, so I won’t care what people say after I’m dead, and what matters is the cause. And that goes on without me.

Exactly. A like I said Dawkins is just as guilty of it as the rest.
You have picked your team now own up to it.
Re: The Refuge of the Toads
And for the record, I wouldn't use the name of someone who wasn't public about it, and especially not to someone I actually like. I've been praising Metaburbia all day because he's been wrecking Novella's apologetics as well as others in the comments. Sorry for the confusion. I just thought the guy was moderately well known in the Pit considering his tweets get linked here sometimes.

That said, Parsehole himself seems kinda semi-retired these days, which is a shame - but the dude has definitely earned his rest.

Seriously though, I don't think many people will cheer at PZ's death other than a few trolls. Unlike, say, when Hitch died, and a large number of "PZ's side" could barely contain their vicious glee.
And I'm sure no heart specialist ever said to a patient, "Go now, and be angry all the time. Pick fights with others."

If Myers dies, I'm sure he'll be remembered as the guy who rode that dinosaur at a creationist museum.

Actually Paul, it's really easy to explain why you're in the hole you're in. Once upon a time you made a losing bet and have spent the rest of your life trying to justify it. And it doesn't matter how increasingly obvious it becomes that your cause is a sham and a failure, you know you can't do any better.

I'm at that point in my life where I'm finally starting to seriously contemplate my own mortality. As you regulars know, my mother died a couple months ago. But what I never mentioned is that all the stress of dealing with mom in her last month's left me with dizziness and chest pains. Long story short, I found i have a (hopefully) minor heart defect, plus I'm in the early stages of COPD, which is what did my mother in. And to think I quit smoking 10 months ago... Lol. I even had to do a cardiac stress test, and I'm happy to report I wasn't a big overdramatic wuss about it like Peezus was about his.
So anyway, this shit is all new to me. For 50 yesrs I've been used to taking my health for granted, so being diagnosed with old-fart conditions (including the eventual death sentence of COPD) is quite depressing. Which I agree is bad. Encouraging a public shaming campaign against a woman who is already being harassed online seems like a stronger justification for being disinvited, to me (as compared to posting the video itself).
Perhaps she has not seen any of the videos of Big Red in action? Or does it not matter and that Chanty Binx (not her real name BTW) can behave in a reprehensible manner and expect no repercussions?
BTW ... anyone have a link that shows Chanty Binx being harassed? All I have seen so far is her being mocked and held up to ridicule.

Brive's doing a heck of a job at Steve's place as well.
Novella: “In fact, pointed criticism is good for the feminist movement – or for any movement. (This does not mean that NECSS is the proper venue for any particular topic.)”
Wow – tell me what was Dawkins’s topic to be at NECSS? Feminism? No? Didn’t think so. So what was the relevance here? Were you nervous of out of session water cooler gossip? Like that’s going to be avoided now with your actions.
Re: The Refuge of the Toads
The NECSS, which seems to care so much about their image (which really boils down to the SGU, which really boils down to the Novellas), they certainly went about this in the most classless way possible.

Latest news about Nawaz whose feet are looking more "clayish" all the time: either he's seriously deluded or a wolf in sheep's clothing. Salient quote from SBS's: Islam is native to the west: Nawaz
And what horseshit: that Islam is manufactured and distributed from #SaudiBarbaria Central.
What an idiot - he was recently on an Australian newsprogram (The Drum) where there was an Australian Muslim woman who seemed rather clearly in favour of theocracy and Sharia law."When we finally realise that Muslims are here to stay, that they are native to the west, their version of Islam is native to the west, we will own that conversation on equal terms," he said.
"As we love our fellow Christian neighbours, we will love our fellow Muslim neighbours because we will feel it's part of us.
Nawaz said Muslims have been born and raised in Australia and the Islam they follow is therefore also born and raised in Australia.
And what horseshit: that Islam is manufactured and distributed from #SaudiBarbaria Central.

I read through all of the 'harassment.' There were some uncomfortable messages, sure, but someone saying "prepare to get anally defiled" is not a rape threat. "Getting ass-raped" is a common vernacular, and no matter how distasteful one may find it, it does not denote an immediate call to action. Saying, "Someone should feed this bitch a bullet" is not a death threat. Saying, "I wish I could punch women so I could punch this bitch in the face" is not a threat of violence.
There are a lot of comments in the article, but none of them strike me as legitimate threats. A woman can stand on the sidewalk and angrily shout at people, but she can't handle comments on tumblr and youtube? Doesn't that strike people as being absurd?

The stuff I deleted I agree with.
These comments I don't. I can see in this case with people doing their best to hunt her down (including doxxing) have a direct message like that being sent to her as something she could see as a threat. I totally buy that.
I think it is always a mistake to completely dismiss people feeling uncomfortable or unsafe. Yes it's used a lot as a defense by shitty people (like Wu claiming to being chased from her home while giving video interviews in her home).
In Big Red's case and with hindsight I am more willing to believe it. She did not profit off of a shit storm. She went away.

This might be a small reason to smile: We could form a club. I'm also being treated for chronic conditions that will probably lead to my exit. How soon and what it's like in between will depend on the effectiveness of treatment and my cooperation. And I quit smoking 2 years ago (this March) :D
On second thought, if we gotta have this kind of club, we may as well start a Patreon together. Shoops For Shekels. We'll fleece these bastards but good! :D
You assholes need to live. I need father figures goddammit.

I love David Futrelle, there he is at reddit, in one of their notorious forums, punchable faces, and reddit, which in 2014 "today announced that in 2014 it served an impressive 71.25 billion pageviews in over 8,000 active subreddits" and he prints 10 comments whose total vote count is:
[1 31 2 2 1 2 5 2 2 -1] = 47 / 10 = 4.7
And then fuckheads feminists and fuckhead media types and fuckheads will link to him with those 10 comments average 5 upvotes per as proof of how evil reddit is.
He's an honest observer, yes he is.

Apparently the main complaint she made to the papers was of her doxxing, which included her phone number and address. If their is anything really serious, I can't find it and the way crybully tactics work I can't imagine it not being shouted from the rooftops.AndrewV69 wrote:Thanks. I'm guessing Futrelle is the way he is because he gets all kind of hatefuck pussy who hate him because he's a man.Guest_0048cc29 wrote:I love David Futrelle, there he is at reddit, in one of their notorious forums, punchable faces, and reddit, which in 2014 "today announced that in 2014 it served an impressive 71.25 billion pageviews in over 8,000 active subreddits" and he prints 10 comments whose total vote count is:
