Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Reminds me of the fuss made about the cover of a new edition of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a couple of years ago: which looked like this:Shatterface wrote:Pageants are bad for a whole variety of reasons, but paedophilia isn't one of those.
The West is going through paedo-panic and we are seeing it even where it doesn't exist.
When I was a kid other kids used to swim naked. Little girls would play dress-up with their mother's dresses and make-up. Pageants are bad because they remove the volition, not because the kids were doing something inherently unnatural.
Now parents can't video their own kids in school plays, and men won't take teaching positions because others might think they're perverts.
This is the opposite of what's going on in the Islamic world, or in Rotherham.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/7 ... te-upr.jpg
A lot of people didn't like it because it bears very little relation to the book, and others because of the disrespect to the original illustrator, Quentin Blake, in not using one of his images. But an awful lot of the complains were about it being a "sexualised" image of a child, which I think is only there if you're looking for it. She's wearing makeup, but if you assumed a grown woman was up for it because she was wearing makeup you'd have to be some sort of puritan neanderthal.
Similarly for this cover for Anne of Green Gables:
http://i.huffpost.com/gen/977293/thumbs ... -570.jpg?6
Some of the complaints were about the fact that the character has red hair and the girl on the cover is blonde, but others called it "Anne Does Green Gables". I'm sorry, but if you look at that picture and see porn, you're the one with the problem.

I'm pretty sure that what the plebs feel about it is irrelevant. The political establishment in the UK is determined to remain in Europe, no matter what - the referendum promise by Cameron was simply a move (possibly a panic one) to stem both potential defections and the loss of tory votes to UKIP. If the result of the referendum is that people want out, the know-betters will almost certainly connive a way to keep us in.Ericb wrote:I'm curious on how the Brits here feel about the coming referendum on the UK staying or leaving the EU. Haven't seen much discussion of it here and was just wondering.
I'm personally in favour of staying in the EU and exploiting it to the hilt for one's own national interest (as the French, Germans & Italians do with regard to the CAP) and ignoring the stuff that's against it (as the French did with the beef crisis, and the Hungarians did with regard to the 'refugee' situation), as the penalties seem lukewarm at best. That said, I'll probably be voting out for the simple reason that I'd like to see the political elite panic for a while - - as I said before, I reckon we're staying in no matter what.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Pretty much agree with the above. I also think that the people who want Brexit assume that there will be no change to how we deal with the EU post exit. I think this assumption is very much mistaken and it would economically be a huge mistake to leave, I also think it is better to reform the EU as a member. The other members are also realising that they don't really want a USE either at the moment although in the very long run this would probably happen of its own accord eventually.paddybrown wrote:I'll be voting to stay. (UK citizen in Northern Ireland.) There are pros and cons. The EU is the devil you know, and leaving would be a leap in the dark. The EU's biggest selling point is that it has preserved peace in western Europe, and the prolonged period of peace we've had since the end of WWII is unusual if you look at history, but on the other hand, its recent expansion into Russia's sphere of interest in Ukraine came closer to provoking war than anything in my lifetime. The European Court acts as a kind of supreme court, restraining what national governments can and can't do, which in a country with no written constitution is a useful thing to have, but the EU has very little democratic accountability.Ericb wrote:I'm curious on how the Brits here feel about the coming referendum on the UK staying or leaving the EU. The main thing that edges me towards staying is that a larger economic area is more resilient in times of recession, as the stronger areas hold up the weaker ones. If it hadn't been for the EU, the last recession would have turned Greece, Spain and Ireland into economic wastelands, which would have cost their allies and trading partners a lot more.

For her this sounds like a quick fast elimination. She can end the chat, block the person and not waste any more time.
For the guys, it sounds like they want a fast sort of who is down to fuck immediately. They don't want to waste time who would not react positively to that.
This sounds like a win-win scenario to me.

It is also common for Black guys to ask "Do you like Black guys." Well, they have a picture up on the site so my daughter knows they are Black. If she wants to chat she knows they are Black. but... they are looking to see if she REALLY likes Black guys. Kinda weird.
I am glad I am married.

It's hard to know which chicks on dating-sites are there to locate a sex partner/ vs which ones are basking in male attention with no intention of going on actual dates/ vs. which ones are interested in being taken on a date... but not eager to have sex.John D wrote:Haha. The non-sequitur dick pic sorts-out the ready-for-sex chicks from the ones who remain non-committal, requiring the dude to attempt to 'convince' her into sex.
The dick pic also sorts the chicks by how they react: Some will react by reciprocating with their own nude pix. Some will laugh or take it in-stride. And some will reveal their shrewish feminist dogma/ entitled princess attitude/ screwy conventional wisdom/ religious beliefs. All useful info.
When I'm asked-for a dick pic, I usually send a pic of my dog with a big stupid smile, a fried chicken drumstick in his mouth, and a boner.
The last time dick pics came-up in conversation, I replied with this:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/live_object_images/3719/1.jpeg
Her reply was, "Im with amy schumer. In that no dick pics is prefered."
Citing Amy Schumer counts against her, by my scoring system.

Again, I don't care what one calls them, but there is a discussion going on over the difference. Ex. http://historynewsnetwork.org/article/524paddybrown wrote:Muslim/moslem is a word transliterated from Arabic. There's no exact one-to-one relationship between letters in one alphabet and letters in another, and all languages have different dialects and accents that could be transliterated differently so we generally work with standardised transliteration systems. The one currently favoured for Arabic to English prefers "muslim" and "Muhammad" rather than the previously preferred "moslem" and "Mohammed", but I don't think it's a huge deal.feathers wrote:I'm not aware (until just now) of any difference between moslem and muslim and neither are, I'm sure, 99.8% of the people you'd ask in the street.NoGodsEver wrote:I'm surprised you didn't point out his use of 'moslem' over 'Muslim', which is about the equivalent of saying 'Oriental' over 'Asian'. For what it's worth, most muslims I've encountered pronounce "muslim" with a short "oo" sound (as in "put") in the first syllable, a voiceless "s" (not a "z"), and a distinct "i" rather than a neutral schwa sound in the second syllable, which corresponds better to "muslim" than "moslem".

Ha, Ha. No. I mean, the girls raised that way are certainly comfortable flaunting their sexuality. They appear to be comfortable in front of people, but the reality is that they are so used to being judged by their looks that they end up a quivering, insecure mess. My eldest's friend from kindergarten went that route, is a total mess. Eating disorders, forced birth control and a host of problems. Data point of one, but look at child actors, anybody who gets judged on their looks. And the worst critics for little girls are of course, other little girls.Service Dog wrote:I think a kid who walks on fashion runways before they sprout sexually is likely to have a social advantage over peers who lack that experience.rayshul wrote:I watched the kid videos and I think they're cute. :/
I don't really understand the thing against child pageants though. I used to do Irish dance class from about that age and did concerts and competitions and it wasn't that different.
Now the larval models look wierd, but soon that will transform into power. I once worked for a belly-dancing recital at a school with international academic cred... featuring fat, clumsy children who would only be attractive to an insane person... and late-30s-to-post-menopausal women whose bodies were stiff, saggy, wrinkled, lumpy... not hideous, but past their prime.
The only radiantly sexy performers were a lithe mid-20s black dude spinning with a sword on his head... and an uncomfortably-underage tween dance-prodigy, who was still half-child... but clearly well on her way to being a stunning woman. Should we lock her up because she's on a spooky cusp?
Panic about bikinis & skin is just small-minded provincialism, from people who dont live near the beach.

Anyway, thanks all for the financial help and the good words. It means a lot. But as I say, the time comes, when the time comes. Too much struggle just becomes too much struggle.
And did you hear about the bait and switch game our provincial government just pulled on poor disabled folk? Amazing: http://thetyee.ca/News/2016/02/16/De-Jo ... dget-2016/
Just another example of the kind of tactics the ongoing war on the poor will engage in. We, the poor, are doomed.

Paraphrase from near the end of the article: "University of Houston cautions professors to choose their class reading list wisely otherwise that blue-haired bint in the front row might pull leather and shoot you in the face."
Which reminds me MELISSA CRICK says, she thought the student reporter could have had a gun which is why she tried to... (grab his camera and then call over the black girls to put them in harms way of a potential shooter....)
Doesn't make her actions sound any saner does it? Has she not heard that BLACK LIVES MATTER?
