Let me agree with Kirbmarc's sentiments here. The reformation of islam is the critical area I feel. Personally I feel I need to see much more in the way of condemnation and isolation of the extremist groups by the massive so--called moderate majority. Maybe the media are guilty of not showing this? I don't know really, perhaps someone with a better understanding and closer connection to islam could weigh in here? There is however a perception that there are a large number of muslims that do have a sympathetic leaning towards the extremist groups and that is a problem.

I should say a couple of things which may be getting lost in emotion. Saying this is the simply the work of "extremists", or that "Islam is evil" etc. misses the point, and also creates obstacles in understanding what is going on, and what will happen in the future. (I find it amusing that those who write long disquisition on SJW phenomena, which, frankly, are like learned essays on warts on an monkey's ass, say unthinking things when it comes to events which really matter).

First, the perpetrators are likely not "extremists" in the way say the Charlie Hebdo murderers were. These people probably view this as proper retaliation for the war being waged on their streets in Syria, Iraq etc. Their rationale simply may be that as the "West" is bombing their streets and killing civilians, this bloodbath on the streets of Paris is justified. From their perspective, if we take the war to their streets, killing tens of thousands of civilians, then they will bring it to our streets, killing as many as they can. Paris may only be the beginning, and we should expect many more attacks in major cities in the West.

The modern Middle-East is a mess. The Western powers sometimes support this group and sometimes the opposite group. We arm IS to fight Syria, and then are all surprised when these same IS come to haunt us. IS have been funded to fight Syria. Syrian leadership is actually not Islamic of the Sunni school but follow, what traditional Sunnis would call "ghulat" ideologies. These are groups which venerate the prophet's son-in-law Ali and his children and descendants almost deifying them. Sunni's hate these Alawis and do not consider them Muslim. In fact, Alawi beliefs are really rather strange, but not in the "lets go kill everyone" way. If anything, they are far more open to new ideas and the Alawi leadership in Syria is actually pretty modern. It is very strange that the US would actually try and remove the Alawi leadership, which is exactly what one would NOT expect if they were sincere in the desire to fight extremism.

The same happened with Taliban, who were patronized in Afghanistan to fight Russia, but who have now become, in the guise of Al Qaida and other terror groups, a nightmare on a global scale. Certain forms of Islam, specially the more austere and puritanical, take hold among war-like groups who are looking for ideological means to justify their essentially tribal wars, and, worse take them to a global stage, specially when they see the "evil" hand of the "West" against them. This is bound to increase as it becomes easier to get hold of arms, helpfully supplied by their strange bed-fellows in the West, and as the truly liberal forms of Islam are attacked and eliminated.

The real danger lies in the Salafi/Wahabbi/Takfiri groups, who are flush with money from the Saudi regime, and, now, with arms supplied by the West. In fact, extremist Wahabbi ideology is the state sponsored religion of Saudi Arabia. Of course, the US is very cosy with the Saudi monarchy, considering them to be allies. While, in fact, it is the Saudi's who are the financiers of the extremist clerics who in turn provide ideological justification for Wahabbis to wage a global jihad. We must stop supporting the Saudis, and neutralize their ability to fund extremist clerics. However, in fact, the US has not only supported them, but even allowed the Saudi to take up the leadership of Human Rights groups in the UN, which is Orwellian and grotesquely funny. Given this, and the ascendency, and explicit encouragement, of leftist fantasy-based liberalism, makes one believe that this is being done deliberately to destabilize the world on a large scale.

The US is grossly unprepared to deal with the tribal politics in the Middle-East. Liberals have this rosy idea that "lets give them democracy, freedom and liberate them and they will become nice and cuddle hug bunnies". I don't know if to cry or laugh at such naivete, or to slap the person who makes these stupid statements. Its a deep misunderstanding of the Middle-Eastern mindset, which does not really desire this type of liberal, Western, "democracy" at all. People pledge allegiance to their tribes and ethnic groups, and to their particular form of Islam. In fact, one clearly sees that even the form of Islam which is adopted depends on the tribal and ethnic identities, and is adopted en-mass to protect these. The abstract concepts of democracy or free-speech we understand in the West are alien to the Middle-Easterners. In this situation, it is best to let the system evolve into its own equilibrium. Western intervention has always made the situation worse, from Afghanistan, to Iraq, Syria and Libya. It is the same simple-minded idiocy as saying "Islam is evil" and hoping that repeating that thousand times, like a rosary, will solve all problems. The reality is that we must stop supporting the Saudi regime, get rid of IS in Syria, and then stop meddling in affairs which are impossible to control. Stop trying to "give" these people democracy, stop bringing them "freedom". Its does not help, and, in fact, makes matters worse.
