Just hours after he learned of the incident, Minor, the residential life director, e-mailed the executive director of Mizzou Hillel to notify her of the anti-Semitic symbol that had been scrawled on the wall.

“Thank you for letting me know about this and including me in these discussions,” Mizzou Hillel executive director Jeanne Snodgrass responded. “As always, myself, our Hillel, and members of the Jewish Student Organization would like to help in any way we can.”

The e-mails also detail a disturbing and previously unpublicized racial incident that happened on the same floor of the same dormitory the previous week. According to a dorm hall coordinator, a white dorm resident was the subject of racial slurs.

“We did have another incident that was just reported last week where an intoxicated individual said ‘bitch ass nigga’ to a white resident, when having a heated interaction with multiple black residents in the third floor lounge, which is the same floor this bathroom incident happened on,” Gateway Hall hall coordinator Susan Cohn wrote to multiple university officials on the morning of October 24. “The individual that reported said he was offended by this but felt like it was not directed towards him or the other black residents in the lounge.” ...

Salama Gallimore, the lead investigator in the university’s Title IX office, responded to Cohn’s e-mail and suggested that the student involved in that particular incident may well have been responsible for the poop swastika in the bathroom.

We agree with Professor Myers on this one. The students should have the right to draw lines beyond which no nobody can cross. They have a right to expect privacy when and where they choose to assemble and in this case they even put up signs communicating that expectation.

To be honest, I don't have a problem with the subject matter. Why shouldn't popular culture be fair game for the humanities? Lady Gaga, for instance, is a major figure (not to mention damned talented), and she's played a significant role in the shift toward LGBT acceptance over the past several years.

No, what bothers me about the humanities (and the social sciences) is the endemic dearth of intellectual rigor. The scholars studying culture are often quite ignorant of statistical reasoning, logical fallacies, and human psychology. This means that an awful lot of what they write is grade-A bullshit. They also frequently start with their conclusions and work backward.

Apparently there is too much sexualization of the conventional sort of lady, and not enough of it going on if you fall into some other, perhaps bearded, category.

Because we who are deemed too old, too fat, too dark, too disabled, too modest, too religious, too depressed, too anxious, too oily, too curly, too scarred, too lumpy, too flat, too tall, too short, too shorn, too pierced, too inked, too queer, too saggy, too colorful, too gray, too bald, or too hairy to be sexy? It’s not because we are seen and respected as dimensional, thoughtful beings. It’s because, “no one wants to see that.” It’s because “that’s not what people like.” “That’s not what sells.”
Therefore, our low “market value” (a phrase neo-masculinists actually use free of irony) doesn’t elevate us.

Well, I agree that considering desirability in purely market terms is unlovely but I bet the writer has their own preferences and standards around who they desire. I suspect from the tone of the article that they would at least be ambivalent at being fetishized. And by doing so, they automatically place a value on themselves and any potential partners. That value may be realistic (or not), but it is still an implicit valuation, and prospective partners must decide on its worth in turn. If they dance in their burlesque strip show and work their sexy mojo as hard as they can, it's an broadcast of their sexuality and with that comes the unspoken invitation to be judged, hopefully in a positive way.

The writer doesn't seem to see that but instead kicks against the jams of acculturated mores. The positive judgements are typically the wrong kind of positive:

For every “sexy,” “hot,” and “beautiful” a woman 10 years younger and 50lbs lighter than me receives, I get “adorable,” “cute,” and “brave.”...

... If the same dudes who think my market value is too low to strip come see me and are rendered nauseous by me? Good. Get sick.

So what I am hearing is that they don't like comparative evaluations - ostensibly positive or not. But surely that's the intrinsic nature of desire and also performance? Why is this so hard? If you put it out there and shake it, you invite assessment and opinions. Otherwise, why even bother?

Even under the "all must have prizes" doctrine, this is pretty hard to swallow.

It's fine for the author to disagree and find serenity in their own unshakeable conviction of beauty but if they really believed it, we wouldn't be reading an essay that's as smolderingly resentful as it is self-contradicting.

You mean, Paul, if Hunt just had apologised you'd have let it rest, cross my heart, 'cause that's what we always do with people if only they apologise?

Now I'm partial but I don't think a majority of people who've heard about the story remember Hunt as a predatory sexist. Rather I think they remember a kind old man and the unmitigated vitriol he was subjected to.

Imagine PZ Myers as a block kommissar in the USSR: "We mean you no harm, comrade Hunt, this is just a formality we have to go through. Please admit you've called comrade Stalin a bourgeois peasant and we'll let you go. Promise."

The question now is, can we prove that the decline of FTB is due to these acts of hilarious blundering, or would readership have diminished regardless? It probably also happens to other sites once the novelty wears off.

But if the latter (natural decline) is the case, I'd expect their ranking to stabilise sometime soon.

I think we all saw what happened to Peezus' old friend Bora when he promptly apologised in order to put it all behind him.
That was quite sufficient to condemn him forever in the eyes of the Pomo-mutaween.
Taking a single step towards accomodating them is like inviting Mr Barlow from Salems Lot into your kitchen so the two of you can talk things over like sensible adults.
