I was game-master for a bunch of Paranoia sessions with my pals in the early 80s. It is a super hard game to run. The best part of it is that it spins out of control so quickly. But they were articulating, in a very cogent way, precisely what college students, of all races, expect from us adults at Yale. They defer to us, revere us, want us to be mom and dad. They have paid to live in nurturing, homey dorms run by married couples appointed to create safe, loving spaces for them. So, when we fail them, they are understandably hurt.

For the cost of several tens of thousands of dollars a year, they can sleep until 10 or 11, go to class only three or four hours a day, have lots of sex, and party with alcohol and drugs relatively consequence-free. The weekend starts Thursday night, sometimes even Wednesday. If they stumbled around, drunk underage, in my neighborhood, two miles from campus, they’d be arrested; but on campus, they are guided back to their dorm rooms, or, if really sick, taken to the infirmary, no questions asked. In short, we give them protection. We are mom and dad.

When they are attacked sexually—which they sometimes are, a fact that keeps me, as a dad, feminist, and teacher, up at night—we offer in-house disciplinary proceedings, which they may choose to use instead of, or in addition to, going to the police. If they are depressed, we offer mental health services. All their health needs, from eyeglasses to abortion to gender reassignment, can be taken care of within Yale’s health plan, a special HMO for students and employees. (I think this is a good thing, by the way.) If society in 2015 is EXACTLY AS BAD about civil rights as the one in the Sixties, how comes that:

-blacks are exercising their right to vote in the US without restrictions;

-there are no laws about "colored fountains", "bus seats for colored people" or any other segregation;

-the South African regime of apartheid ended and Nelson Mandela become president of his country;

-Barack Obama, a man with a black father, was elected as a President for two terms;

-Ben Carson, a black man, is a Republican (!!) candidate for the presidential primary;

-the main candidate for the 2016 Democratic presidential primary elections is Hilary Clinton, a woman;

-gay people can marry in the US;

-while before the Sixties only a handful of ethnic minorities had positions of power after the Recunstriction, since the Sixties there havve been black mayors, hispanic mayors, and female mayors of big cities in the US, non-white US representatives, female US representatives, non-white US senators, female US senators (including Carol Moseley Braun, a black woman,), two non-white Supreme Court judges (Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas), three female Supreme Court judges (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan), black state governors, female state governor, black Cabinet secretaries (including two Secretaries of State: Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice)female cabinet secretaries (including three Secretaries of State: Madelene Albright, Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton);

-gay people can now openly join the military;

-some openly LGBT people have hold offices in the US;

-sodomy laws have been repealed throughout the US;

Etc. etc.

Now, you may say that these changes have been happening only in the last few years. You may also say that there is much more that can be done. You may say that the changes have been slow.

From a legal point of view, after finally gay marriage has been approved, there are only very few obstacles to equality of rights.

You can argue that social pressure and attitudes still make life unequal for women, black people or (especially) for LGBT people in practice in yet far too many places in the US and elsewhere.

You can also point out that while Western nations have taken some steps towards equality some others places on Earth (like most countries with a Muslim majority) are still incredibly unequal.

But if you say that we're living in the exact same society of the Sixties you're either a liar or completely delusional.

Saying that society is just as bad as the one in the Sixties means that all the people who had the opportunity to exercise their rights as black, women, LGBT people and were elected or appointed to positions of power don't really count, because they're just "tokens" or (if they're Republicans) "Uncle Toms"/"sister punishers"/"Aunt Marys".

Saying that society is just as bad as the one in the Sixties means that all the efforts of real civil rights activists have been completely useless, and that all the results that happened before of their actions are meaningless.

These students have been mocked in conservative media for misunderstanding the point of college and a liberal arts education. His intended message is clear: chauvinist monsters like the one I've just enacted are obstacles for women in science, and you should continue to overcome them.

And as the witness testimony in the first half of the Medium piece makes clear, the audience by and large understood that message, while also feeling that the toast was inappropriate for the occasion and perhaps even sexist.

But just compare St. Louis's original account (which the media ran with, prompting the public shaming campaign) with what he really said. How can anyone maintain with a straight face that she accurately reported the toast? How can anyone maintain with a straight face that Hunt got a fair shake here?

Hunt's detractors are presenting a false dichotomy: either there's nothing that could conceivably be wrong with the toast, or St. Louis and Blum and Oransky and their supporters did everything right and Hunt deserved everything that happened to him and only sexists could disagree.

Apparently Shaun King claims that someone is "threatening" him with the results of a DNA test:

I just have one question about King’s response, though: Why is this a “threat”? If he’s telling the truth about his biological father, then a DNA test will only back him up. It’ll clear his name.

A few months ago, a group called the Black Conservatives Fund PAC offered to donate $25,000 to BLM if King agreed to a DNA test. King never replied to them, and he was certainly under no obligation to do so. But did he see it as a “threat”? If so, why? How could solid scientific proof of his true heritage ever harm him?

If King really believes what he’s been telling people about his biological father, then he has nothing to fear from some lowlife blackmailers. He should call their bluff. Tell them to do their worst.

Indeed, it's kind of weird. How can you be threatened with a birth certificate if you know that the birth certificate will show that you were telling the truth? How can you think that some evidence about the truth a threat if you're confident that what you said is the truth?
