Wonder how long PZ is going to tolerate the "Bags are packed" link to Ophelia's blog now that she's gone full-on Greerish transphobe and is explicitly insulting his bloggers.
Re: Happy 3rd Pit Birthday!
Lel. The latest comment at Peez's is dredging up Occupy and blaming the big mean media for making it look like a joke.
No, what actually happened was that the movement completely lost its original aims of banking reform and turned into yet another identity politics clusterfuck. It DID become a joke. And people who actually wanted some sort of meaningful financial regulation or debt forgiveness are still pretty pissed about it all.
At this point, the working class in America have NO political friends or allies. The right shits on them and calls them lazy. The left shits on them and calls them racist and sexist.

Yeah Peez, like the media shouldn't have documented the idjits ignoring John Fucking Lewis when he came by to talk to them. He was their entre to real power and they were more interested in fine tuning their progressive stack or some other nonsense. It was appalling and on video for the whole world to see.Sunder wrote:Lel. The latest comment at Peez's is dredging up Occupy and blaming the big mean media for making it look like a joke.

Puppets, facepaint, and drum circles; grievances from trans rights to saving whales jockeying to steal attention from the main protest. This happens every damn time liberal Americans turn out for a protest. I desperately wish it was due to COINTELPRO, so I don't have to believe the Left is so mind-roastingly stupid.

Obviously "do you identify as a man/woman, are you oppressed by men? Are you a lesbian" begging the question probes are out.
Would they really resort to socially constructed badges of oppression (pink/perfume/dress) as positive indicators? Or is there a secret I'm not in on?

I'd like to argue that he wasn't making an offhand, somewhat misplaced joke; he was presenting a persiflage of the sexist attitude he later deplores. People like Connie St Louis were not there as honest journalists, but as Unofficial STASI Informants, going around and trying to nail people for the merest perceived transgression against feminist doctrine.Guestus Aurelius wrote:His words were reported mostly accurately, but they were entirely divorced from their context so that readers would think he was seriously suggesting that labs should be segregated by gender. They keep versions for the past 30 days:
dropbox.com/help/11
Upgrade to Pro and your versions are kept for 1 year.
dropbox.com/help/113
That last option is great in case you get infected with a stealth virus that is undiscovered for a bit of time. That way you can go back before the infection and get good versions of your data/document files.
Hell, one hit from a cryptolocker variant could have lost you your work too.
Everyone else here on the board, take dogen's case as an example and a warning to protect your data. House fires, home robberies, stolen laptop, lost laptop, unruly nieces & nephews, hard drives going bad. You should just expect that you are going to have a catastrophic data failure of some sort. Because i know it has happened to all of you in the past. Protecting your data so that all you have to do is replace your computer & programs to get back working will save you a heck of a lot of time and stress.

Thanks to you and all the others who've provided helpful advice. One addendum: figure out what to do about backups when you are away from your home base for an extended period of time. In my case, being on sabbatical means that my daily backups stopped occurring (because Apple's Time Machine doesn't work when I'm not on the same subnet as my Time Capsule -- even though it should). Having a cloud-based backup service will certainly help with this.

I think she wanted to hear more about stare-rape, microaggressions, mansplaining, & the other horrors 1st world trust fund princesses like Oafie are forced to brave. Jenner is a media sensation over a SJW-related gender issue but isn't using s/h/it's public megaphone to promote Oafie's ideology.Service Dog wrote:Waitaminute... I'm not really paying attention to this Caitlyn Jenner thing.... is the new hubbub that she said the hardest part of being a woman is deciding what to wear? And bats like Ophelia Benson are flapping-mad... because Jenner didn't say the hardest-part is something like 'not being able to get an abortion in Iraq', or whatevs?
I'm probably greatly ninja'd-- if I point-out that Jenner is being honest about what's the hardest part for a rich, famous, tv star. And, also, he's sorta saying it's the part the comes least-naturally. Which... don't tons of respected feminists say 'performing femininity' is a huge, unnatural burden for women?
Also-- there's an essay in The Cultural Studies Reader. I've probably posted from-it previously... about how Feminism requires women-- as part of "identifying as" a woman-- to "identify with" women who are less and less like themselves. So an able-bodied, college-educated white suburban US soccer mom-- is supposed to 'identify with' a legless illiterate pygmy HIV+ hermaphrodite sex slave in the Congo.
So Jenner's sjw thoughtcrime is identifying-with her own actual experience too-much, and not pretending to relate to more oppressed women.
Also, she's jealous. No one tells Oafie how brave she is for being a mannish, unattractive old lady despite her having been one for centuries. That's gotta grate.

Re: Happy 3rd Pit Birthday!
The working class have been thrown under the bus since the 70's, both in the US and the Uk. It is particularly apparent in the US where one struggles to find any reference to a 'working' class now. Everyone is 'middle-class' even the most blueshirted of workers. Here in the Uk the one demographic that is consistently failing in education is white working-class boys, unfortunately as privileged, shitlord rapists in waiting, any suggestions that they should be prioritised to bring them up to the same educational standards as the rest of society are quickly pooh-poohed by the upper-middle-class white liberal feminists who dominate education. Marxism has always been a luxury of the middle-class as the kind of revolutionary rhetoric they employ has a tendency to lose working-class people their jobs. It is considerably easier to agitate for revolution when it's Daddy who owns the factory where you are a middle manager, or you are in the ivory towers of academia with tenure. Poverty breeds fear not revolution.Sunder wrote:Lel. The latest comment at Peez's is dredging up Occupy and blaming the big mean media for making it look like a joke.

"That's just the fear of patriarchy...", quoth the Token Dame on QI series M episode 4.

So, for those not in the know (likely very few here), QI is a brilliant comic panel TV show in the UK, focusing on debunking misguided myths, examining "common sense", and challenging its panelists with facts that run ramshackle over General Ignorance, hosted by the ever-more-brilliant Stephen Fry, now in its 13th season. It is essentially skepticism manifested in popular and frequently hilarious form, marketed and appreciated by the masses.
Last year or so, they opted to require a female guest on the show for every episode. There have already been numerous occasional and repeat female guests: Sandi Toksvig, Jo Brand, Sue Perkins, Victoria Coren-Mitchell, Ronni Ancona, and many others, and most have contributed and been hilarious to the show. However, since the mandate, they have been cycling through Token Women on each episode. Most have been worthwhile, funny, and contributing, but this is the first time I have utterly been sickened by their choice of guest (excluding the ventriloquist incident).
So after the long intro, seriously, what the fuck is going on? The mystical, mythical force of "Patriarchy", while we have seen it being discussed across many fora (mostly inconsequential, unless you consider the lack of competitiveness the West will face after running an entire generation through mandatory tertiary "education" of undisprovable bullshit), that it is now being discussed as if it's serious to the 64 million people in the UK and countless overseas fans, all I can do is repeat: "What the fucking fuckety fuck?"
P.S. For the quote-mining lurkers, I believe in equality of opportunity for all humans.

pissing-off Elyse, because she doesn't have a stomach. Elyse's self diagnosis is She's hinting that it might be fatal heart disease and/or cancer.
One of her male sycophants got turned-on by her describing washing her crotch with a bedpan hose, they started talking dirty, he posted a selfie offering "hugs", she replied "No. That's close enough." He took her no-means-no seriously, so she had a little tantrum & announced that her "no" was "passive-aggressive" flirtation, not a real 'no'. Fuck these idiots.
Elyse's crew reports that they don't feel veganism is an intersectional feminist issue, just because some exploited animals are female. I think they're garbling the 'sexual politics of meat' argument-- which is that patriarchal colonial sadistic domination of food animals normalizes cruelty/ which then makes it easy to treat women poorly also. Nazi SS officers practiced killing dogs, to prepare themselves to kill humans, etc.
Elyse announces she is opposed to the polyamory practice of having "veto power" and "primary, secondary", tertiary partners (as espoused by Dr. Richard Carrier, PhD.), because it is "monogamy of commitment", and unfair to give less to some partners than others. But she also says it's "gross" to say the primary partners are "privileged"
All these tidbits are beneath my threshold of give a fuck/ but together they add up to an odd little snapshot of sjw drivel.

Here's one that might be an example of that. Kathleen Wynne, a feminist politician who believes that modern Ontario is a rape culture ( http://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/ ... tario.html ) meets with communist officials behind closed doors ( http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/k ... -1.3260018 ).feathers wrote:Is there evidence for this Marxist infiltration? The feminist narrative is now so firmly rooted that central control is not needed. It's all self-perpetuating. It'll be interesting to see how the Lovecraft thing plays out since he's also adored by SJ leaning writers like China Meiville and liberal left figures like Alan Moore.

Now look. Tampons are transphobic and should be called Transpons. Also we demand a brand called Dynapons, with EXPLOSIVE written on the side which should have REAL fuse chord for ease of extraction.
Also, chess is sexist and racist: Why should white always go first? Why can't Black go first, eh eh? Don't #blackpawnsmatter? And why should the Queen always have to run around protecting the stupid King? And what's this brown swastika shit doing on E4? And Transatlantic has to be sexist somehow. Triggered. :hankey:

Re: Happy 3rd Pit Birthday!
If species and sexual dimorphism are purely social constructs, then is it not wrong, nee, deeply immoral to impose such classifications onto animals?
And would it not also be morally righteous and correct to say that all brainless anencephalics are sexless, since bio sex is purely a social construct? Sex must absolutely not be assigned to any anencephalic that is born. It cannot choose a gender and will never be able to but that is irrelevant if bio sex itself is purely imaginary and has no basis in objective reality.
But if bio sex is purely imaginary and as Danah told steers, subjective feelies always ttrump objective fact, then why can we not continue to perpetuate the fantasy that is sexual dimorphism,?
I now has headache.

Is that a threadt?feathers wrote:People fetching their white linen from the laundromat had better beware.Skep tickle wrote:The student body president at Mizzou apparently FB-posted last night that the KKK had been seen on campus and the sighting confirmed, and that he was working with the MU PD, National Guard, and state police in light of that. Turns out, the 1st part was rumor or misunderstanding and the 2nd part appears to have been an exaggeration.

I think what we are seeing is the further collapse of the traditional "humanities" style of higher education. Universities used to brag about being able to make better citizens regardless of what was studied. They bragged about setting up the next generation to make themselves and the world a better place. They cling to this idea even when they can no longer effectively supply this product. So, the humanities departments get more and more radical and ideological. Meanwhile, the cost of education skyrockets because of declining support from the government and higher expectations for services (gyms, dorms, libraries, computer support).Lsuoma wrote:American tertiary education has fucked itself to the ground. http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=6971Under intense pressure, Dr. Brigham has both cancelled the exam and resigned from the university, according to screenshots posted online of an email from Dr. Brigham to his students.
“The exam is cancelled. Our students will be able to take the exam at an alternate date with no loss of points,” Dr. Brigham told students. “No one will have to come to class today. And, I am resigning my position.”
There are two groups of people going to uni. Those who want training and a good career, and those who want to change the world through social justice. These two groups are at odds and have very different goals. It is always interesting to see that the SJWs can't pay their student loans so they want a government bailout.... a bailout from the same government they are trying to tear down. I end with my usual old white dood reply.... "Get a job."
