Sorry to hear that,

Reminds me of a close friend whose PhD was going to be based on an experiment launched by this.

He ended up getting his degree in data analysis techniques, not astrophysics.

While struggling to open my building's door, I fell down hard. With my crutches. Big laugh ensued from the group. I just spent 5 minutes trying to stand up, gather my crutches and groceries, under the fuckers' laughs, and no one ever came and helped me. I'm in considerable pain now, and a tinsy bit more racist than I used to be.

Should I call immigration?
In all seriousness, Phil, your day was far worse than mine. I simply lost a few possessions, which can mostly be replaced with a tolerable level of inconvenience. And most of my work is inside my head.

I hope the pain clears up quickly, and that you are able to stoically overcome this catastrophic loss of face.

Ah yes, I recall the cluster-fuck. That sucked big time for a lot of people.

A hoary old professor once told me about a vaguely similar mishap during his PhD. He was doing UV spectroscopy using suborbital rockets, and one mission -- while initially successful -- ended up with the rocket coming down in the Irish Sea and being lost. Six months later, the payload was picked up by a trawler and eventually made its way back to him. However, to get useful science from the degraded spectrograph exposures, he had to run experiments exploring the effects of salt-water immersion on photographic film. Quite a tale!

No backups since July, which is when I started my 6-month sabbatical in the UK. I've been regularly committing my software to repos throughout, so that's OK; the loss is mainly things like notes, figures, log files, etc.

Good question. I'd say none at all. The radiation field is peaked in the UV, and so you have to get quite far from the star to have a tolerable (non-mutagenic) UV flux. But that far out, the overall flux (at all wavelengths) is so low that you're going to have a tough time keeping water in liquid state. Basically, it's like trying to use an arc welder as a room heating device.

Also, any planets orbiting a white dwarf will have experienced the star's evolution through a couple of red giant phases. These may have enveloped the planet and fried off any volatiles. So again, not good for life.

A few weeks ago there was a paper announcing the first detection of a (minor) planet orbiting a white dwarf, made using the Kepler space mission. The planet seems to be in the process of disintegrating. There's quite a bit of interest in this sort of system; as planets break up and accrete onto a WD, they pollute its atmosphere with unusual (for a WD) elements. By analyzing this pollution, we can get a handle on what the planets were made of.

I am glad it is not a complete loss.

Not to continue the victim blaming, but when you get a new laptop consider hooking up a synchronized on-line backup such as this:

It will take the bite out of instances like.

Finally got to watch the whole thing. Holy smokes.

From Nov 10: http://journalism.missouri.edu/2015/11/ ... ahan-quad/
From the desk of David Kurpius, dean of the Missouri School of Journalism:
The Missouri School of Journalism is proud of photojournalism senior Tim Tai for how he handled himself during a protest on Carnahan Quad on the University of Missouri campus.

University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe and University of Missouri-Columbia Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin both resigned on Nov. 9 after complaints and protests of their leadership. Tai was covering the event as a freelancer for ESPN when protesters blocked his access through physical and verbal intimidation.

The news media have First Amendment rights to cover public events. Tai handled himself professionally and with poise.

Also, for clarification, Assistant Professor Melissa Click, featured in several videos confronting journalists, is not a faculty member in the Missouri School of Journalism.

She is a member of the MU Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Science. In that capacity she holds a courtesy appointment with the School of Journalism. Journalism School faculty members are taking immediate action to review that appointment.

The events of Nov. 9 have raised numerous issues regarding the boundaries of the First Amendment. Although the attention on journalists has shifted the focus from the news of the day, it provides an opportunity to educate students and citizens about the role of a free press.

Proudman on affirmative action: The linked article actually concludes that there are major problems with making affirmative consent a legal requirement, Proudman disagrees: British anti-feminists should be dancing in the aisles that this is the woman being held up across the media as one of the best and brightest new voices in feminism. The white knights lining up to defend her honour on Twitter obviously disagree, but I think every prominent feminist like her makes "feminism: another word for equality" a slightly harder sell.

That was a great essay. Worth it for this line alone:
As the old saying goes, white supremacists are the best argument against white supremacy, and most of them couldn’t take over a blanket fort with a flamethrower.

Here's a link for Steersman

 "Bannable offense" in Gumby's book. :-)

But thanks for the link, offered potentially at great personal sacrifice; above and beyond the call of duty. However, while it has some amusing anecdotes and background, I don't think it really addresses much in the way of any actual reasons why there might be some different interpretations. Assuming that there's some justification for "the nigger-cunt hypothesis", it's hard not to conclude, based on the supposed prevalence of "cunt" and "twat" in the UK, that they're more sexist than the US. Or that the US, in general, tend to wonky inferences. News at 11 ....

Billie from Ockham wrote:If anyone cares, Melissa Click has produced a half-way decent apology and will probably keep her zero-time appointment in journalism at Mizzou.
This site says she has apologized and resigned
To clarify, she has resigned her essentially meaningless affiliation with the School of Journalism. Her home department is Communication (within the College of Art and Science), and her position there is unaffected.

Her apology is pretty decent. I still think they should fire her if they can, but I give her credit where it's due. Here it is:
Yesterday was an historic day at MU — full of emotion and confusion. I have reviewed and reflected upon the video of me that is circulating, and have written this statement to offer both apology and context for my actions. I have reached out to the journalists involved to offer my sincere apologies and to express regret over my actions. I regret the language and strategies I used, and sincerely apologize to the MU campus community, and journalists at large, for my behavior, and also for the way my actions have shifted attention away from the students’ campaign for justice.

From this experience I have learned about humanity and humility. When I apologized to one of the reporters in a phone call this afternoon, he accepted my apology. I believe he is doing a difficult job, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to speak with him. His dignity also speaks well to the Journalism program at MU. Again, I wish to express my sincere apology for my actions on Carnahan Quad yesterday.
The other Mizzou employee in the video (Greek Life and Leadership Assistant Director) hasn't commented yet, but the school's National Pan-Hellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, and Panhellenic Association issued the following (rather weak, IMO) joint statement:
Janna started at the University in 2001 and since then she has made tremendous strides in creating a stronger, safer and more unified Greek Life at Mizzou. The leaders of these Greek councils attribute much of their success in sexual violence education, diversity training, leader development and unity between the councils to Janna’s leadership. She has aided, advocated for and defended marginalized students, particularly in Greek Life, ceaselessly on our campus. Her advocacy and support for her students has been unwavering for more than a decade.

We understand the importance of upholding students’ First Amendment rights and were disappointed in the video uploaded yesterday, but we do not feel as if her actions at that time were reflective of her intentions to support students.

Our hope is that students, Mizzou staff, and others following this story nationwide take into consideration her success in the position, her character and her unwavering support for her students. We trust that this University will hold her accountable for her actions while also considering the best interest of its students.
"Disappointed"? "Her actions at that time"?

Read this if you want a laugh.
Could a fourth-wave feminist reading of the gender imbalance at championships be that women find competing to be a social constraint in and of itself, that they’re post-competition?
