How do you arrive at that conclusion?
Years ago, when I was trying to make an independent movie, I watched a roadtrip-to-Cannes documentary by Troma, the low-budget schlock company. It showed the primary Cannes festival has created a frenzy of ancillary events, such as Cannes Market-- which is about business deals/ rather than critical praise & awards. That's where Troma meets the distributors from foreign markets, to sell overseas rights.
In the US, when the Sundance independent festival became dominated by insiders like Sean Penn; the unaffiliated Slamdance festival began running, to show the true outsiders. It looks to me like this chick said [the equivalent of] "I won an award Slamdance". And Futrelle said, "Gotcha! Slamdance only SOUNDS LIKE Sundance!" I wouldn't fault a speaker for talking about "my TEDx Talk", if they didn't add the disclaimer "which is different from a TED Talk" every time.
My current plan to go to "Basel" in a few weeks... does not involve a trip to Basel Switzerland, where the art festival originated. "Art Basel Miami Beach" is an official spin-off. The whole city is going to have ABMB tie-in events, like hotel yoga instructors will give free classes on the beach. But they aren't part of the official program. And-- there are 7,8,9... a dozen?... unaffiliated satellite fairs: Scope, Pulse. Some of them are the big fish in their own pond, like Design Miami-- which is about decor, not gallery art. Or Wynwood Walls, which specializes in graffiti. In past years, I've been involved in official ABMB events, but also off-label stuff. I'm only careful about specifying the exact affiliations of what I do-- to help others know when&where they can view it. I'm comfortable not being specific, because I don't think people see much as such a newb-- that I'd try to inflate my cred. And-- only a newb needs to be told "Art Basel" is a conglomeration of overlapping events.
