In any case Apple will start adding shit you don't want on to the app, like Sex Genius where it feeds your performance into a database and makes inappropriate suggestions about where else you might want to stick your dick.

True story for you non Americans. I never cared for soccer. It seemed boring and I had better things to do with my life than watch a couple of french guys kick the ball between one another for a couple of hours and not score.
Then my daughter wanted to play soccer in a local fall league. We signed her up and I asked if they needed any volunteers. They did. I ended up becoming both the coach of my Daughter's team (the purple dragons) and a referee. I learned a lot about the game and now I enjoy watching it.

I hope I haven't fueled Zvan's already over-inflated ego. I don't conflate "scary" and "effective", in fact I think those two qualities are very rarely in the same camp. Doxxing people or emailing their place of work to level accusations at them isn't effective at anything except messing with that individual's life. It's petty revenge for perceived slights. It's pathetic.
Re: Happy 3rd Pit Birthday!
Is this a US thing because I've never met either an engineer or a scientist who believes in creationism?Shatterface as Guest wrote:It is my experience (and I have worked with hundreds of engineers), that many engineers are very socially conservative. And really.... engineers are not scientists.
science is a method of turning money into knowledge.
engineering is a method of turning knowledge into money.
They are very different things.
Shatterface[/quote]
Creationism in general is a US thing and I am referring to my experience with US engineers. I will say this.... I have also worked with upwards of a hundred German, Hungarian, and Swiss engineers in my career, and I cannot think of one that gave me the impression they didn't believe in evolution.
I keep a poster of "The Correlated History of Earth" on the wall in my office. It has a detailed view of the history of life, geology, plate tectonics...etc. Super cool. As a discussion starter I put a sticky note at the top of the primate line that reads "You Are Here!" Haha.
I saw a survey of Amercians that mathced their creationism beleifs to their occupation. While scientist almost all believed in evolution, a majority of engineers did not believe in evolution. I'll be damned if I can find the link now that I need it.

I'd like to see that survey and see how it factors in zipcodes, employer, religion, etc.
The only creationist I've ever met was a chemistry professor at a Cal State school. (He actually had more than a dozen degrees, but only in fields mentioned in the bible.)
For that matter the only conservative STEM workers I've ever met were when I worked for companies that did most of their work for the military. And they weren't just engineers but scientists as well. There were plenty of liberals STEM workers there too, but that is where I found most of the conservative ones.
I fail to see any reason to think Engineering leads to creationism or religious beliefs more than "science" leads to evolution (or atheism). It reminds me of the nonsense studies that come out each year showing science proves Republians or conservatives are stupid.
It's a nice feel good message.

Here is at least an interesting survey of religiosity vs. education disciplines. As expected, the poly-sci majors are much more religious than the physicists.... with the chemists somewhere in the middle.Guest wrote:I'd like to see that survey and see how it factors in zipcodes, employer, religion, etc.

I suspect this is caused by several factors. Poly sci, chemistry, physics, psychology, etc.... majors will all will have a certain way of looking at the world. This will influence their outlook on carer choice and religion. Also, some education topics will drive some people away from religion.

Of course, like almost any blanket statement, 'Republicans are stupid' or 'conservatives are stupid' doesn't hold up. But in general, on average, yes, Republicans and conservatives are more stupid, or, less intelligent, than those that are not. If you don't agree with that, you're stupid.Guest wrote:I'd like to see that survey and see how it factors in zipcodes, employer, religion, etc.

A search at avoiceformen.com for putative father registry turns up only two hits, one by Robert Franklin, one by Paul Elam.
Putative Father Registries are written about regularly by Robert Franklin at nationalparentsorganization.org (which had been fathersandfamilies.org) and before then at glennsacks.com
A voice for men is a shit heap of outrage with little else.
And then one might look at the atlantic article and think about why this case finally brought the issue up in a publishable way that the long history of problems with adoption and fathers never did before.

I seem to have struck a nerve with Zvan by archiving that trolling comment. I noticed that one of the other comments that she linked to and called "ridiculous" was simply a short comment complimenting her post as interesting. Does she really find the idea that someone might actually enjoy her writing to be ridiculous?
I wonder if she is just going to go ahead and just delete all of her comments now. After all, maybe all of her comments are from people trolling her. How would she know? Will she spend her days at lurking the pit, waiting to see what other comments we laugh at?
I would believe her when she says that it doesn't bother her... But her lengthy screed seems to indicate otherwise. PZ Myers also appears in the comments. Apparently, numerous brave Pharyngula commenters bombarded PZ with calls for help while PZ was trying to enjoy himself at a party. Although he was delayed, daddy PZ came in and saved the day by banning the dissenter, and the baboons were safe again.

Meh. A couple of Scotchs and I'd probably do her. Frankly, her makeup does more to turn me off than anything else.comhcinc wrote:You sure?Dave wrote:

Re: Happy 3rd Pit Birthday!
Back in ye olde dayse, on Usenet, there was a thing called the Salem Hypothesis, which said that in any creation/evolution debate, if an creationist claimed scientific credentials, s/h/it was likely an engineer. It held up pretty well anectodally. Don't think anyone really took it seriously then. Some people later started to think it a real theory, much like people now think that Mike Godwin said if you mention Nazis you lost the debate.John D wrote:Here is at least an interesting survey of religiosity vs. education disciplines. As expected, the poly-sci majors are much more religious than the physicists.... with the chemists somewhere in the middle.Guest wrote:I'd like to see that survey and see how it factors in zipcodes, employer, religion, etc.
I suspect this is caused by several factors. Poly sci, chemistry, physics, psychology, etc.... majors will all will have a certain way of looking at the world. This will influence their outlook on carer choice and religion. Also, some education topics will drive some people away from religion.

If you're reading this Steph- I wouldn't trust comments just because they have a woman's name or they agree with you or are nice. That is exactly the sort of grooming that the really bad trolls pull.
Also, when are you going to give a proper apology to that nice marine biology grad student you falsely accused of sexual harassment. And don't you double down with a notpology. Stop digging now, Steph!
I thought she moderated her comments? If so she couldn't have read that too carefully.I wonder if she is just going to go ahead and just delete all of her comments now. After all, maybe all of her comments are from people trolling her. How would she know? Will she spend her days at lurking the pit, waiting to see what other comments we laugh at?

So this is interesting. An overweight woman overhears a daughter commenting on how huge a tank top is. Yup. Not making fun of the large over weight woman, not insulting her, not ridiculing her, but simply commenting that the daughter and one of her friends could fit inside an article of clothing she wasn't even wearing.

She wants people to "Be kind. Think about others before you speak.†Which isn't bad advice. However the fucking shirt isn't her.

It's really annoying these days trying to trawl for lulz at Meyers's place. You go and look at the "recent comments" list (10 most recent), think "ooh, Nerd has responded to that guy who called him out", click the link, and find it's to the same old comment.
I'm pleased the fraudulent old hentai tentacle rape porn enthusiast is losing readers faster than Subway threw Jared under the bus, but it does make for less interesting times. Thank fuck for Carrier chucking his muck into Ophelia's raggedy face, then spreading it around with his average-for-a-Caucasian dicktip.

Am I seeing this right? Did Nerd just make a somewhat reasonable point with nary a reference to sexual harassment training or a single demand for evidence/citations?

Seems Jadehawk agrees: PZ once held X opinion. X opinion is now toxic on Pharyngula. Y is now the new approved opinion. The Yeti wrote: https://archive.is/XB4HT
Of course they miss the point. It's not hypocritical to change one's mind, but PZ never states that he HAS changed his mind. Everything is neatly compartmentalized. PZ does not defend his old statements, but neither does he admit he was ever wrong or why. His reaction to seeing his own words thrown in his face is not to say "I once thought that, but now I think this." It's to ban and lie about what was posted.

Fuck, I'm watching an episode of Criminal Minds where some crazy bitch has 4 or 4 guys tied up in her barn. They've all got tubes up their noses and just before the commercial break she started approaching one them with an ax. Kind of like a slim attractive Stefanie.
