True story for you non Americans. I never cared for soccer. It seemed boring and I had better things to do with my life than watch a couple of french guys kick the ball between one another for a couple of hours and not score.

Then my daughter wanted to play soccer in a local fall league. We signed her up and I asked if they needed any volunteers. They did. I ended up becoming both the coach of my Daughter's team (the purple dragons) and a referee. I learned a lot about the game and now I enjoy watching it.

There are two hypothesis there: the first is that most creationists who claim to be scientists are engineers, the other is that engineers tend to have a creationist mindset. There's plenty of evidence for the first claim, much less for the second one.

It is my experience (and I have worked with hundreds of engineers), that many engineers are very socially conservative. They also tend to follow intuitive rules for solving problems. I think this leads to a certain type of person liking engineering and also supporting creationism. I am a political moderate by most measures, but I am usually the most liberal guy in a room full of engineers.

And really.... engineers are not scientists.

Creationism in general is a US thing and I am referring to my experience with US engineers. I will say this.... I have also worked with upwards of a hundred German, Hungarian, and Swiss engineers in my career, and I cannot think of one that gave me the impression they didn't believe in evolution.

I keep a poster of "The Correlated History of Earth" on the wall in my office. It has a detailed view of the history of life, geology, plate tectonics...etc. Super cool. As a discussion starter I put a sticky note at the top of the primate line that reads "You Are Here!" Haha.

I saw a survey of Amercians that mathced their creationism beleifs to their occupation. While scientist almost all believed in evolution, a majority of engineers did not believe in evolution. I'll be damned if I can find the link now that I need it.

There were plenty of liberals STEM workers there too, but that is where I found most of the conservative ones.

I fail to see any reason to think Engineering leads to creationism or religious beliefs more than "science" leads to evolution (or atheism). It reminds me of the nonsense studies that come out each year showing science proves Republians or conservatives are stupid.

It's a nice feel good message.

Here is at least an interesting survey of religiosity vs. education disciplines. As expected, the poly-sci majors are much more religious than the physicists.... with the chemists somewhere in the middle.

I suspect this is caused by several factors. Poly sci, chemistry, physics, psychology, etc.... majors will all will have a certain way of looking at the world. This will influence their outlook on carer choice and religion. Also, some education topics will drive some people away from religion.

Back in ye olde dayse, on Usenet, there was a thing called the Salem Hypothesis, which said that in any creation/evolution debate, if an creationist claimed scientific credentials, s/h/it was likely an engineer. It held up pretty well anectodally. Don't think anyone really took it seriously then. Some people later started to think it a real theory, much like people now think that Mike Godwin said if you mention Nazis you lost the debate.

Seems Jadehawk agrees: PZ once held X opinion. X opinion is now toxic on Pharyngula. Y is now the new approved opinion.

Of course they miss the point. It's not hypocritical to change one's mind, but PZ never states that he HAS changed his mind. Everything is neatly compartmentalized. PZ does not defend his old statements, but neither does he admit he was ever wrong or why. His reaction to seeing his own words thrown in his face is not to say "I once thought that, but now I think this." It's to ban and lie about what was posted.
