Moreover, as public employees and arguably government actors under the federal constitution, Basler and Click tried to regulate First Amendment activity in a public forum (i.e., the media’s peaceable assembly and newsgathering).* That potentially exposes them and the University of Missouri to liability under 42 USC § 1983, a federal law that allows individuals to sue public agents and entities for deprivations of civil or constitutional rights. Because of the physical contact shown on the video, it’s even possible that they could be liable for assault in the third degree under Missouri law.

I doubt, though, that Tai or Schierbecker will press the issue. As Tai told me, “I don’t have ill will toward the professors, staff, and students. I think they had good intentions but were very passionate, and I wish we could both learn something from the encounter. But, at the end of the day, the constitution is the constitution, and I’m dismayed that [faculty and staff] didn’t understand that.”

Maryam Namazie had previously been invited by the Warwick Atheist, secularist and humanist society (WASH) in September but was told by organisers she was “highly inflammatory and could incite hatred” in Muslim students. Warwick’s students’ union overturned its decision to ban her, however, following a successful campaign.

Prior to yesterday’s event, Goldsmiths’ Islamic Society (Isoc) released a statement saying that it “[expressed] deep concern regarding Goldsmiths Atheist, secularist and humanist society with renounced Islamophobe Maryam Namazi”.

The statement continued to read she “is known to hold very controversial views”, adding “we feel such an individual will violate our safe space”.

Maryam Namazi, when asked if she could give her response to the talk, said: “Goldsmiths Isoc never made any formal complaint to the students’ union” arguing last night’s incidents were an “attempt at intimidating Atheist Secularist and Humanist organisers”.

She also told London Student: This very group which absurdly speaks of “safe spaces” has in the past invited Hamza Tzortzis of IERA which says beheading of apostates is painless and Moazem Begg of Cage Prisoners that advocates “defensive jihad”.

Yeah so

The ISOC gets to bring in a speaker who endorses beheadings

But an atheist/secular group should not have the right to bring in someone who opposes beheadings, because the university is a safe space for ISOC

But, yes, another really interesting and powerful voice, and yes, quite similar in timbre and tone to Cornell -- but I miss that great soft croon-to-hard ragey rasp that Cornell has.

I really liked that sort of trick thing, the exaggerated soft-to-hard, that some of the Seattle grunge folk did. Cornell did it with his voice; Cobain with his guitar: soft croon slipping over into howling raspy powerhouse. Ya! For teh win!
