I haven't seen any evidence offered that Bora personally has done anything deserving of what he has received. "Lay with dogs and you get fleas" as an argument applies perfectly to my fundamentalist christian personal example. Fundamentalists are assholes. Nothing to do with SJWs, but another modern irritation - audiobooks. I saw Stephen Fry on Top Gear saying he lost a lot of weight by going for long walks listening to audiobooks, and I need to lose some weight, so I thought I'd give it a go. Problem is, all the available audiobooks seem to be sold via Audible, in a really stupid format. Each file is nine hours long and there doesn't seem to be any way of bookmarking where you stopped listening last. Also, they're in a proprietory file format that won't play on a generic mp3 player. There's not much point buying an audiobook if you have to sit at your computer to listen to it. Am I going to have to give in and get a smartphone, or am I doomed to only listening to free public domain mp3 audiobooks?

You are doomed if you don't want to get a smart phone. If you do get a smart phone the audible app is pretty nice at least on android.

But why not just do podcast? There are thousands of decent podcast about just about every subject under the sun.

I saw Stephen Fry on Top Gear saying he lost a lot of weight by going for long walks listening to audiobooks, and I need to lose some weight, so I thought I'd give it a go. Each file is nine hours long and there doesn't seem to be any way of bookmarking where you stopped listening last. Also, they're in a proprietory file format that won't play on a generic mp3 player. There's not much point buying an audiobook if you have to sit at your computer to listen to it. Am I going to have to give in and get a smartphone, or am I doomed to only listening to free public domain mp3 audiobooks?

I actually think podcast are better for working out than audiobooks.

They tend to come out on a schedule and they tend to have a set time. It makes it easy to say I am going to work out x hours a week. Podcast give you a natural stopping point.
That is my two cents anyway.

I listen to audiobooks in bed. Yeah that means I go back and cover the same ground a lot but since I listen to mostly nonfiction it helps to do it that way anyhow.

In the time since I last posted I have been pre-emptively taking your advice, and I have a bunch of podcast series on religious history packed onto my mp3 player. I had bought the audiobook of Tom Holland's In the Shadow of the Sword, about the origins of Islam in late antiquity, and was annoyed I'd have to stay home to listen to it. I was also hoping to download Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, having loved the TV series, but that seems to be out of the question.

I'm sure I'll end up getting a smart phone at some stage, but I'm resisting - I spend enough time on the internet as it is, I don't want to be able to when I'm out - just as I resisted getting a mobile phone of any sort until I had no choice. I miss the days when if somebody rang you and you didn't answer, they just said "oh, he must be out, I'll get him another time." These days they think either you're dead or you've fallen out with them. So uncivilised.

I'm sure I'll end up getting a smart phone at some stage, but I'm resisting - I spend enough time on the internet as it is, I don't want to be able to when I'm out - just as I resisted getting a mobile phone of any sort until I had no choice. I miss the days when if somebody rang you and you didn't answer, they just said "oh, he must be out, I'll get him another time." These days they think either you're dead or you've fallen out with them. So uncivilised.

Besides just being funny on the face of it, the fact that the commenter in question (I won't ruin the surprise) clearly spent so much more time on the comment than Ophelia Benson spent on the original post add some icing. Has Ophelia re-appeared to respond?

Does anyone else agree that while Richard's comments are hilariously inappropriate from a social-competence perspective, they're not ethically bad? They're absurd, hilarious, self-aggrandising, and have all the self-awareness of a peanut, but it is perfectly ethically okay that he made them and he actually made a good argument in defense of a nuanced porn-positive position?
