They're both completely right, IMHO. The MRAs are the gender-flipped version of the radfems, and the MGTOW are the male counterpart to the Lesbian Separatists. We don't need special rights for women or men, and we don't need to hide from society because we don't like it.

What we do need are equal standards before the law for all individuals (and we already have that more or less), the end of the big influence of identity policies (which won't go away easily, but at least are easy to mock) and maybe the gradual mellowing of some extreme, silly and harmful stereotypes (slut-shaming, virgin-shaming, etc.). But the latter is a gradual process that won't happen overnight just because the vocal minorities are being loud enough. And anyway most problems in Western societies don't require special groups of activists to handle them.

One of the big differences you see in countries is between a Negative concept of freedom (preventing the government from infringing) and a Positive concept of freedom (maximizing the amount of freedom for all citizens). Libertarians support the former, and yes, their stance is indicative of that.

I don't think it's reasonable to label the U.S. Libertarian Party as right wing. On all social issues they are more left wing than most Democrats.

That some took a open and honest approach (e.g., Skep tickle) and some pushed too hard (e.g., Jacques) was exactly correct and part of why having a variety of opinions and methods is so valuable.

Politician-types need to know that strolling in with unprincipled platitudes and "can't we all get along" bullshit is going to be met with the truth. That Johnson is being exposed in that JTE thread is a very good thing.

I just can't see PZ and Benson having a real falling out over brown people in France; they just don't give enough of a shit about things not-American. What is the problem you're trying to solve?

There is currently no space on-wiki where a woman can go and be sure that she'll be able to participate in discussions without being dominated by men's voices. Wikipedia needs a place where women can feel safer and not always overwhelmed by male advice, criticism, and explanations.

My basic rule is that all primarily-political organizations will be taken over by ideological extremists. Some may self-correct but it usually takes a large drop in membership for that to happen.

Part of the problem is the internet. I think it promotes clicks to sites that are the most outrageous. This perpetuates the idea that people agree with the post. This also helps fund the most radical ideas on the internet since revenue is generated by the number of clicks.

I am going to try to stop. Just STOP.

This is hard for me. I love a good fight (hell, I love a bad fight). This means I tend to get sucked in by the most outrageous posts. This just feeds the freaks. Every day I try to remember to say ... No More Clicks. I often read "The Humanist" on line for example. I am a Humanist Celebrant, so I have some skin in this game, so to speak. There are several people who comment on The Humanist who I routinely disagree with (Greta and Sikivu come to mind). I just stay away from their posts. If I comment that I disagree I will probably get pounced on anyway... and I will just get them more hits.

At the same time make sure I promote the posts I agree with. The ones that are sensible and informative. Even if I leave a comment that simply says "I agree" it shows my support. It is a bit like voting. Every time you click somewhere you are voting with your eyeballs. If you know there is someone whose opinion is ill informed and biased... just stay away.

I have also decided to push harder at the idea that we atheists are just regular nice people. That we are just like everyone else. The idea that we can tell others that we are better than them is part of our problem. No one is going to believe that I am better than them just because I claim to be logical. But... I can show theists that I am as good as them. I can act in a way that promotes this. I can be open, generous, giving, fun, compassionate. I can stop calling theists "brain damaged" and I can start joining them in doing service projects.

I have been really shocked by how much I have enjoyed Sunday Assembly in Detroit. It is so great to meet a ton of atheists who are really nice people. And... we are all very different. But, since we meet face-to-face and not on some blog, we are generous and open to each other. Part of the philosophy to Sunday Assembly is to be radically inclusive. This means that we are not going to be anti-religious. We are non-religious. This is a big distinction and it really opens us all up to be more open and understanding of each other.

It is the old basic stuff. Treat others with respect even if you disagree. This is a switch from the Christopher Hitchen's aggressive "New Atheist." It is also certainly not "Atheism Plus." It is inclusive and not exclusive. I am almost embarrassed at how I poo pooed "Atheist Church" when I first heard of Sunday Assembly. Anyway. Just my comment for the day.

It seems to me, that up until a few months ago, the comments sections were open warfare between pitters and FTB SJW's.

Lately though, I sense a lack of SJW voices. It appears to be more "the pitters" against "the fence sitters".

I saw a comment during my short spell at Myers blog, where someone was stating that they had given up even reading at Patheos or Atheism Ireland, never mind commenting there. I wonder if this is becoming widespread among FTB commenters.

Anybody else notice this?

Many of the SJW types will only post at Love Joy Feminism now because it is a " safe space.". The banhammer is wielded against anyone who makes then feel remotely uncomfortable. They won't even post at The Friendly Atheist anymore because it is too "hostile" a place and allows people with unpopular or just conflicting opinions to post. LJF used to be a good blog, but it is turning into a mini-Pharyngula.

Yes. I was particularly surprised by the lack of FtB comments in the K Johnson PR-stunt thread. While I saw many people from the Slymepit pushing back against Johnson's smears against this site, I saw very few FtBers arguing about the few shots Johnson took against that site.

When I was young, every woman in my home town in England wore a headscarf. Have you ever seen Andy Capp? Flo always wears a headscarf outside. That is the way it was in England.

There are several interesting things here in my opinion. First is the fact that France has so many laws regulating how you dress. I think you can probably go topless but can't wear a hijab. It just seems fundamentally "non-liberal" to me. I am using the classic version of liberal here, meaning that people are free to pursue their happiness with a minimum of interference from the government. France creates a lot of "good" freedoms and "bad" freedoms in my opinion.

There certainly are dress codes and such at schools in the US, and you will get arrested for nudity (depending greatly on local regulations), but there is no law about a hijab. Very strange that there is in "uber-liberal" France.

Recently there was a hubbub over a woman not wanting to remove her burka for her driver license photo. It was ruled that it was reasonable to require her to show her face for the license. But, this is where the law ends in the US.

(please forgive me if I spell this clothing wrong. It seems there is no agreed to spelling and it is not in my spell checker... and I don't want to enact the labor to check).

My second thought is that there is a deep problem with the government forcing people to change their preferences. I can see the case for enforcing laws to protect a group from things like Jim Crow. I just can't see it as a good plan to force people to stop wearing their religious clothes. I imagine that French Jews can wear the scull cap. How can it be right to allow a Jew to wear a Yamika and a Muslim cannot wear a burka?
