Marcotte, Futrelle, RooshV, Davis Aurini, McEwan and Matt Forney seem more alike than different. I'm not sure I'd believe any of them if they said the sky is blue or water is wet.

I'm not really sure who Roosh's audience is. He seems too far-right for gamergate or even generic antifeminism. Maybe he shares an audience with race realists.

James Caruthers wrote: One of the problems here is people are listening to pundits, politicians and clickbait bloggers and believing what they are saying. But those people only say what they say because of what they perceive as the benefits to themselves if they say those things. Such individuals have no interest in truth, subjective or otherwise.

If Obama would talk about a 7 cent wage gap instead of 23 cents, I might have a tiny bit of respect for him. And then the conversation could move forward from there to maybe address this perceived injustice, or at least understand it better. It might be that the 7 cents is not due to sexism, but IIRC at the moment it is unexplained.

But how can we talk about the 7 cents if feminists won't stop bringing up the 23 cents and forcing everyone to argue about it?

There's an honest way to engage with people who believe differently, and then there's the lying pundit way to engage. The latter involves copious amounts of red meat thrown at the feet of one's political base/patreon supporters.
Basically what you're saying is that the SJWs are children of the social network/Internet generation and that social networks and the Internet have grown so much in power and diffusion that they are the ones who create policies and diffuse slogans these days.

I agree with you. The problem isn't really social justice, or feminism as a whole, or even MRAs as a whole. The real problem is "Internet activism": it's incredibly easy to feel like you've contributed to a meaningful change in society by retweeting a tweet, liking a Facebook page or reblogging something you've found on Tumblr. And it's incredibly easy to create mobs of outraged Internet activists ready to fight "the enemy".

This problem has always existed: the Roman orators brought the masses on one side or the other and then let them duke it out in their place.

What has changed isn't human nature but simply the time people need to publicly express their disappointment and outrage: it takes days to organize a march, it takes hours to craft a coherent political manifesto, it takes minutes to write a letter and send it to a newspaper, it takes seconds to write a comment or a tweet and it only takes a fraction of second to click "like" or "retweet". Internet activism is extremely easy and anyone can do it (even bots!).

And that's why so many different kinds of activism exist, even those about issues that once would be considered trivial. Since we're also bombarded with information all day long people have to write outrageous clickbait to stand out, especially if their income depends on clicks.

The clickbait problem is inherent in the system of the Internet. So is the "witch hunts" problem. And of course politicians are more than ready to jump on the bandwagon of easy Internet outrage.

Internet should have really stayed only for porn.

The cocksure certitude, Guestus (great comment, post more) and others mention are a strategy also to appear less assailable among a likeminded ingroup where an ideological tendency cannot be questioned. In other words, on FreethoughtBlogs and similar places there is just one ideological direction to go. You can overshoot easily and it's accepted, but you cannot correct in the other direction. That is, everything that confirms e.g. the view that women are oppressed is “good” and everything that seems to undermine this idea is “bad”. The effect is that bullshit artist can exaggerate, but calling a statement into question might appear “hyperskeptical” — and they wonder why would you expend energy on working against the “good cause”, are you against it? (that's the milder form Ends Justify Means). This asymmetry has game theoretical consequences. If you can pile on, add to the direction, e.g. correct a number in support of ideological beliefs, you win social status. You lose nothing if you say nothing. You risk status but hardly earn anything for corrections that undermine the ideological direction. The identification problem of assessing such potential outcomes is easy, because the FTB style vitriol and nastiness make it very clear on which side you can err (or bullshit), and where you better don't comment.

And yet they believe they are skeptical and don't see the apparent design they've built, and don't even realize this despite vocabulary (hyperskeptical, safe space) which couldn't make it any more obvious. Hanlon's Razor? Dunning-Kruger? Honestly inept, or skillfully dishonest — I don't know. More like Ken Ham, or more like Ray Comfort? Probably a mixture of both.

They think of themselves as skeptics because they believe in science and spurn claptrap. They become accustomed, I suspect, to being right. It feels so damn good to be right, doesn't it? To be right and confident? To feel like you're making the world a better place by promoting truth? To know that there's a Right Answer out there, and to know how to find it? To effortlessly dismiss bullshit and mercilessly ridicule its harmful peddlers by appealing to the Consensus of Experts?

And why should they be any less confident about their rightness when it comes to philosophy or politics or anything else? Being wrong is for the stupid people who believe in bullshit and don't know how to find the Right Answer. Being wrong makes the world a worse place!

So, what's the Right Answer? Just listen to the Experts.

Who are the Experts?

Well, are there Professional Academic Scholars with PhD's who publish in Peer-Reviewed Journals on the topic? If so, then surely they're the Experts, and we shouldn't deny their Consensus. After all, that's what we preach when it comes to science—trust the PhD's. Why should it be any different in the humanities? Doctorates are prestigious, and they don't just hand them out to ideologically compromised nincompoops who aren't well-trained in Objectively Finding the Right Answer. The supposed "liberal bias in higher education" is mere conspiratorial bullshit from right-wing extremists who don't believe in global warming or evolution. If there is a liberal bias in higher education, then it's only because the truth has a liberal bias!

And if you're not really the type of skeptic who investigates Professional Scholarly Academic Research first-hand, then you can spot Experts (on social media, say) by their tone. They'll be like you: confident, outspoken, outraged, and belittling as fuck, since that's how Good and Right People behave when smacking down harmful bullshit. Now there's an Expert! There's someone who knows exactly where the line in the sand is that separates Wrong-and-Harmful from Right-and-Good.

Okay, maybe I'm just blowing smoke. Overconfidence and simplistic thinking are, of course, pretty universal.

But when I see "skeptics" like Phil Plait and Sean Carroll throw all caution to the wind when there's a chance to show that they "support the cause" by actively participating in vicious public shaming campaigns and mindlessly parroting vapid cliches and unsupported claims, I do scratch my head.
I can't see a thing in this post that I disagree with or haven't, to one degree or another thought. In science you really have to rely on the work of the field to move forward yourself. So I think it creates a hole/trap that can be exploited.

I see this with Myers, Carroll and Plait (and others). They all rely on information that, if they'd check it for themselves (and I mean honestly), they should be able to discover most of it ranges from 'wrong' to outright 'ludicrous propaganda.' But they don't because in their fields, people don't get ahead by lying, making shit up or being mostly wrong about everything.

They're also idiots who put women on pedestals (ironically, a form of sexism) which tends to make them gullible and credulous when it comes to things women tell them. Women lie. Women cheat. Women abuse. Women rape. Women murder. Not because they're 'women,' but because humans do that kind of shit and they're not some special kind of human that does no wrong...

So they have two huge biases that control their ability to weed out the false from the true.

As a result of the Lyon attack/beheading at a gas facility (I work on analogous industry) we've upped security big time, and in two primary respects:

First, we now need to wear our ID on a lanyard round our necks, instead of leaving it in our drawers and waving to someone to open/disarm to door on our way back from the dunny.

Second, no one is getting past Kevin on Reception and his letter opener. NO ONE! (Except when he's at lunch. Or going to the toilet. Or having a smoke. Or at work at all. His knee is bung - he's actually an injured warehouse bloke on light duties...not one of them flash *professional* receptionists.)

Plait decries the failure of the mail to acknowledge alleged corroboration of St Louis on Hunt.

He also makes it clear that a joke never alleviates sexist gender based objective words.

Plait then proceeds to omit mention of the ground swell of laureate and scientific support for Hunt including many woman.

He also applauds the humour implicite in #distractinglysexy

Meh looks like a dick acts like a dick.

This is the Plait who as head of JREF failed to proceed with a female employee's allegation of rape against a speaker - but chose instead to reinvite said speaker to his one and only TAM. And wasn't Plait one of the gaggle who at the time laughed off Shermer's alleged boob grab?

James Caruthers wrote: For example, the unadjusted wage gap of 77% is bullshit. We know this and feminists know it too. BUT... There is a wage gap of around 7 cents or so, which has been adjusted. Now, we don't know for sure that sexism causes the 7% as it's unexplained. But it seems worth exploring what causes the gap. Because 7 cents per dollar is actually not trivial when you consider a 40+ year income. The missing 7 cents that can't be explained adds up to a significant sum. That's worth having a conversation about, but unfortunately the feminists won't shut the fuck up about "muh 77 cents" and the MRA won't admit that 7 cents per dollar of income is significant over a lifetime.
Except the DOL says the number is between 4.8% and 7%. Depending. And what the number is, is 'unexplained' because they themselves admit they're only looking at SOME of the variables' that cause the gap, such as career choice and hours worked.

One thing the DOL does say is that their research and the research in the field indicates the gap is almost all choice. Heck, even the AAUW (American Association of University Women) says that (though they removed their study that indicated that for reasons I don't know). And they're anything but a conservative think-tank dedicated to keeping the girls in pink.

http://www.aauw.org/GraduatetoaPayGap/u ... Report.pdf <-- the removed study

In fact the AAUW takes the NOW (National Organziation of Women) position that girls are shunted away from educational opportunities that lead to high-paying careers by the evil patriarchy. But that's not true. Women, as a population, just aren't that interested in STEM fields as men. In the 15 years we've spent millions upon millions of dollars smashing boys down while propping girls up for STEM careers. Yet in the past 15 years the percentage of girls going into engineering (for example) has dropped from 19% of engineering students to 17% of engineering students. DESPITE female enrollments still going up relative to men.

This guy reminds me of a local (to me) who threw a shit fit at an X-Wing tournament because the announcer kept referring to a certain ship as a "Fat Han" (which is the standard label for a Millennium Falcon with every upgrade). A few people tried to explain to him that it was not insulting and had nothing to do with him, anyway, but he wouldn't shut up. Luckily, no-one supported his nonsense and he stormed out before the final match. He's been a bit of a running joke ever since. It doesn't help when you remind people of this:

So did she carry the heavy bags in or at least make an equal effort?

Because although you point is correct when it comes to looking at large populations, I am going to take a wild guess that she would have been fully capable of pulling in the full car load herself without help. It just may have taken more trips and been a bit more exhausting. Because at that point she would have been taking advantage of what they call "benevolent sexism," and didn't want to give up the perks.

That brings up another issue. While I believe that the average woman who trains for strength can and will be stronger than a man who doesn't. I suspect that the reliance/expectation on men to do the heavy lifting leads to compounding the existing biological average imbalance strength between the sexes. Strength goes to those who use their muscles.

Godfrey Elfwick was not the first #WrongSkin. David Fenton have been dealing with this since 1980.

But what is also of interest in the mutual fascination the West and East have with each other in pop culture. Mostly built on stereotypes on both sides, but also largely positive impressions. OK, maybe Japan has more of a fascination with US culture that Britain, but they still get some accolades her or there.

But then you turn that around yet again as to who spends more on fashion & beauty products.

And then you turn that around again and ask who has more disposable income.

Queue in the fiscal gender oppression olympics.

It's appears to me to be little more than a form of simple compartmentalisation. In some sense there is a "sceptic" self, which may function within certain environments but if and when applied to their "political" self (a construct for other environments) would lead to cognitive dissonance, so they are kept apart in order to function. It's when they such things bleed over that we have problems. People have began to bleed their distinct selves together and demand we cater to both, even when they are contradictory and make life difficult for others.

Like Doctors whose religion is pro-life refusing to do abortion. Like ideologues demanding they be heard as they demand others silenced.
Like art critics not criticising art but the artist and then whining when the artist insults them or criticises their art.

Belief selves seem to get in the way of function selves quite a lot. If I'm remotely making sense.

There's a lot of little things that can certainly play out in terms of creating the 7% wage gap (as opposed to the labor gap that the larger number discusses). The thing is, a lot of these things are things that we may or may not want to change. Off the top of my head:

Maternity leave resulting in lost raises
A desire to not work stupid insane OT resulting in lower raises.
Being more risk-adverse and not be willing to negotiate hard for starting pay/raises. (Note that a LOT of this stuff has to do with raises)
Slightly higher absenteeism...leading to lower raises.

All of those things are very real factors in the real world. Are they based around sexism? Well...no. They're just the standards that employers want. Now, in a lot of ways I think those are shit standards (I think OT hurts the economy, I think that being more risk-adverse is a good thing, and so on), but I don't think they're sexist, even though the effects are often more gendered.

The problem is that activists are not interest in addressing those points at all. It's like they want employers to do self-audits of their current wages by gender, and if they see any difference, to "correct them", regardless of previous performance. But yet, if there is any men who suffer from those points I listed above (I'm a risk-averse guy who hates OT, although I'm very reliable), we're going to be hosed, as the problem isn't actually being addressed.

They used Zoe Quinn and Polygon.com as foundations for part of their underlying argument of the perceived reality in gaming. I didn't take the paper too seriously after that.

It's even worse, they are calling her a game developer - that's more or less on par with calling someone who wrote a "hello world"-bat file a software engineer...

I hear you Kiwi. I have a friend who's been bugging the crap out of me to go stay with her in Australia for an extended holiday. She swamps my email in-box with stunning photographs of beaches, palm tree studded countryside and other assorted attractions. Truly, Australia and New Zealand look like awesome places to live.

However, there are few things that put me off...

1) She's going to rape me (Absolutely not a joke!)
2) The heat! (I'm one of the pale blue guys Billy Connolly jokes about)
3) Killer beasties! Killer beasties everywhere!

Oh, and this track would be playing on loop for the duration of my stay!

(It's an amazing movie btw, highly recommended viewing!)

I'm led to believe that New Zealand has far fewer nasty buggers lurking in the bushes, under toilet seats etc. Can you confirm this?

Come in winter then. The heat is lower, the beasties are quieter. Can't help with the getting raped though.

I can never tell when furreners are serious or taking the piss about the dangerous beastie think here in AUS...(leaving the raping kind to one side for a moment)

I think it might be sort of an urban myth. This article from the relatively staid and sober Australia Museum:

http://australianmuseum.net.au/dangerous-australians

The abstract:
Australia is known world-wide for its dangerous animals. On average, all the people killed each year by snakes, crocs or sharks can be counted on just one hand. Is our dangerous reputation really fair?
I saw a really very funny and interesting interview, a couple of years back, with the departing Australian correspondent for one of the UK media houses, maybe the Times, or the Guardian...? Anyway, he said in the first year of his three-year appointment he tried repeatedly filing news stories about politics, the economy and society; to deafening silence from his Editor; but he really started getting column inches back home once he filed on croc attacks...

He conceded this 'informed' his reporting for the balance of his posting.

100% deadpan serious my friend. I've traveled far and wide, seen all sorts of nasty critters (camel spiders still give me nightmares! Thanks Iraq!) but Oz, partly due to ignorance on my behalf, sounds like hell on Earth. I should also point out, my friend, smelling blood in the water, does little to ease my mind on the matter. She assures me that it's perfectly safe one minute, then sends me video clips of her removing snakes, spiders like dinner plates and other assorted nasties from her house/yard. Don't get me wrong, she's also ex-military (she was a medic) and has a wicked sense of humor but there's definitely an element of truth behind the jokes.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. It's still too early to confirm but I may just take you up on your kind offer!

My friend lives in Queensland (Townsville) so you're just down the coast. There's an island/resort off the coast that she's itching to show me (I'd need to dig through emails to confirm the name) but I think we already talked about a trip to Sydney. Yup, I'll speak to her and will confirm closer to the time.

Thanks again.

Not a prob. The more notice the better.

Your friend might be talking about Hayman Island specifically, or the Whitsunday Island group generally - I've never been but pretty much everyone I know IRL has been to the Whitsundays, and they rave...

Nothing like the strange fruits of rape hysteria. There was the church shooter aiming to stop blacks from "taking over this country" and raping women. And now you have the current 2nd spot running in the Republican primary wanted to put a stop to immigration do to all the raping from immigrants.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/01/politics/ ... index.html

Gotta stop all that rape.

I'll jump in here, given that you've got most of your answers from the convict class.

NZ has no snakes or nasty bitey things (as long as you don't count mosquitos and sandflies). You can walk around barefoot in the grass or the bush and you are only likely to stand on broken glass or German hitch hiker pooh.

Consequently I used to be paranoid about snakes here. Now I am only mildly terrified. I also send the wife out first into the sea just in case of sharks, and the kids get thrown into dams first (when the dog isn't around) in case of crocodiles.

Apart from that, it is perfectly fine.

You'll probably want to slather yourself in white zinc so that people don't think you are the Iceman, and to protect you from sunburn (you will get burnt quicker in NZ though, because of the hole in the ozone layer).

Sydney is just down the road from Townsville, so you could probably walk if you are feeling reasonably fit. Stop in here at Brisbane for a cuppa on the way.

Some of these statements are true.

But there would be a bed here too, if you were down this way.

I am indeed in BrisVegas. Today is a bit chilly - about 20 C. I was in Canberra last week - I'd forgotten how miserable that place is in winter (and the other three seasons).

One of my work areas is climate change adaptation and associated disaster risk management (formerly research, now mainly consultancy) - I'll need to update my models to incorporate the risk profile due to gay marriage.

Yup, I'm that pale, I get moonburn on clear nights. A bucket of white zinc might be a wise purchase. That or a welders suit and helmet...

It's even worse, they are calling her a game developer - that's more or less on par with calling someone who wrote a "hello world"-bat file a software engineer...
Yeah, when it all started to hit the GG fan last year I checked out Quinns' "game" Depression Quest....it made me sad.

Not because of the content, but because they tried to tell us that something like that wins awards and that if the anti-GG SJWs win, then I have no good games to look forward to in the future.

But, as one of the other posters here mentioned, at least there is a huge back catalogue of great games from years past to play. And most will be in the bargain bin soon if they aren't already.

I have no objection to this on its face; however at the outset, they seek to use it to curb speech because of how others might interpret/misinterpret it, which is a "problematic" precedent to say the least. Second, it can be used to suppress even innocuous, silly and stupid sexist humor, "benign" sexism, which I think is a thing. There's no line demarcating what is and isn't acceptable. So when I attended a biology class and the instructor (a woman, if it's relevant) asked "can we tell the difference between male and female sperm?" and I said "female sperm ask for directions" this was sexist and supposedly damaging. I should have been punished. Instead the entire class (mostly women) had a hearty laugh.
Years ago, around the start of A Voice For Men, but before I knew about it, I remember coming across this Paul Elam video:

At the time, the story he tells in the first 3 minutes seemed very believable to me. (These days I wonder how true his story is.)

For me, it's always been the double standards that annoy me the most. My sister is mildly SJW leaning (although I don't think she'll tip over now). I remember one day she was trying to convince me how there were no meaningful differences between men and women. Then we arrived at her house, and I said she may as well carry the heavy bags inside, since there was no difference between us. She got my point, after giving me a dirty look.
Not sure if it's a true story, but to be honest, it has the ring of truth to me. I even found myself filling in some of the same adjectives "Men are..." lazy, pigs, etc. Truth is pop culture has a pretty dim view of masculinity, and the programming starts in the nursery.

There's no doubt in my mind that there are significant number of truly misogynist men who would finish "Women are..." with bitches, whores, etc. I've seen them, I've read them, they're out there. The brilliance of feminism has been to frame how men consider women generally by the worst examples that exist. MRA's do kind of the inverse thing, but feminists have the advantage of precedent; they occupied the ground first, and have very effectively cast MRAs as misogynists (and some...er a lot, are). IMO pro and academic feminists are pretty much as off-base as the MRAs.
