Watson always outdoes me. I’ve long had a minimal diversity requirement of 25% non-white, non-male speakers. I may have to up that number to keep up.
Is there any evidence that Myers has long had this requirement?
The stats for PZ's latest conference. (I love how he got far lower billing than Nugent.)

http://www.ibka.org/en/convention2015

Including the big award winner:

13 men
5 women

27.7% women.

Can someone ask PZ if he's willing to speak at such a sexist gathering?

But wait, his was only 25%. It's Watson who had to decline because of the 27% failure rate.

Your iPad woes are likely due to insufficient memory, especially if you have the old 1 GB version. You could try to see if there are any other applications running you could close. Otherwise, use an adblocker, flashblocker or even turn off loading of images to minimise the amount of RAM needed to render all inline images and videos. /NEC

We could also ask the FT to reduce the number of postings per Pit page. That would also reduce loading times on wacky wifi connections.
It's actually an iPad 2 which I think only has 512mb RAM with 64 gb storage.

Old but functional. Until a week ago when I wanted to install OneNote. The app demanded a more recent OS, the release notes said the latest basically just included support for Apple Watch. Ho hum.

What a disaster. New crap version of Safari. Pages don't scroll properly, screen will hang or flash for a second when switching. Wifi is buggy and the Pit disengages constantly. Ugg.

I suspect Apple has maneuvered me into having to fork out a grand for the latest and greatest.
To do what worked until last week.

Bastards. Now let me just select all and copy before submitting as I bet I get a login error.
I have the same ipad with latest OS and can use the pit ok. It has no problems staying logged in although I use Chrome on it, not Safari.

I fixed the scrolling by going to General> Accessiblity > Reduce Motion make sure this is turned on.

It's on VIMEO so no embed. It discusses the opening beach scene of Jaws, in context of a bit of film making history and is well worth your time when you are into the art of cinematography, or just an interested want to see what kind of thought goes into simply filming a sequence.
Thanks! That was wonderful. I love these sort of deconstructions, it's fascinating to learn how deftly we're being manipulated in even the most prosaic shots.

Here's a new-ish YouTube channel by a film editor who does the same kind of sequence decoding:

Here's a little bit of it. She spent some time moaning about it in public, as she usually does.

Surly Amy's attendance at WiSC3 was the beginning of rapprochement, but even then it seemed like Amy was just going through the motions -- she'd tweet stuff like "I'm so sorry you're housebound with PTSD, it must be horrible", followed immediately with something like "And now I fly out to LA for 3 days of FUN, FUN, FUN!" in the same tweet. I think liking Melody takes effort.

I like finding out the fonts used in films so I can hunt down lookalikes. But GIMP's type tools are crude and the free fontsets I use are dodgy, so I don't dare concern myself too much with proper typography or I'll go crazy chasing something I can't achieve. I'm sure I make Matt Cavanaugh nuts with the splattershot text I put in images :D

Probably not what he meant.
Prima facie, it would mean "quadroons" and "gender-fluid,leans female"

I don't know if any of you are Frank Herbert fans (but I imagine the answer is Yes). If so, then what the above reminds me of are the Pan Spechi from Whipping Star and Dosadi Experiment. The Pan Spechi would take on the form of other species, including humans. One way to detect that someone who looks human is really Pan Spechi is that they have a tendency to turn their head before they turn their eyes.

That the Pan Spechi are rarely, if ever, the same as the way that they were born cannot be mere coinky-dink, eh?

Why is Jerry Coyne blocking...

#26970

Post by Aneris »

The “Jerry Coyne blocking …” thread on Pharyngula is more of a container where people just dump their outrage, usual falsehoods (as per Myers' Law even if someone corrected it later) and animosities. It has indeed zero to do with any concrete scientific matter at all. The form is typical for PZ Myers — whether he wrote it himself or some minion in his stead. Many of his threads have more of a superficial opener text but are outrage containers where people just freely vent their anger at the designated target. That's typically free wheeling and PZ Myers, while commenting and banning, never has a problem when outright falsehoods and smears get dumped into the container meant for the target. Hypocritically, and here too, most of the criticism would be equally if not more true for PZ Myers himself. He indeed does silent ban, doesn't even bother to stick to any roolz and has otherwise very similar ideas as Jerry Coyne, e.g. first time commenters should plausibly want to contribute something and not rant out of the gate. Comments are moderated et cetera... (I too have no problem with it, if its plausible and transparent ).

PZ Myers occasional tone trolling and “how to do community” comments are just plain bizarre. Even if his comments tuned it down a bit — death wish derby and porcupines, dehumanizing and extreme insults — no apology was offered ever to anyone; no officially visible article is known where that was worked out; and the feuds that sprung from that behaviour persist to this very day. It's far from obsolete. I wonder how this dogpiling and chewtoy style, hamstringing the dissenter (they can't defend equally, that's trolling then) and then banning them anyway is supposed to be superior to sticking to roolz and enforcing them.

I think that's the one true calling they've all missed. All of them -- Wu, Myers, Watson, Zvan, Hensley, etc -- would kill to be Cowell for a day, to be famous and judge others, despite having meager talents themselves.

Wow, I would have bet after tax dollars that was mofo's melt down. Is there a date or more detail. Feb 2014 or 2013?
That was posted in 2014. Melody's fallout with the Skepchicks was in 2013. If her "year ago" timeframe is accurate, that would be about the time she came back from a month-long sabbatical from the Web in Dec 2012, when her affliction was upgraded from generalized anxiety disorder to PTSD.

It is OK. The co-pilot was just polyamorous.

Don't be a prudish douche bag. You and everyone else bitching about the crash are just jealous that he was getting laid.

Anyone showing that kind of disrespect towards women is clearly a misandrist on a self-destructive pathway. Can we ensure that all commercial pilots do not have sex with more than one woman within a a six month period? This is a very workable idea, and will ensure that no more planes are brought down by polygamist men.

Really?

Hey folks. I am thinking of starting a new hobby. Can I count on everyone here to finance it for me?[/quote]

Depends. Is it a hobby that will allow you to take still more time off of work? Is it a hobby that you could literally do right now for free?

His main squeeze broke up with him for being "controlling." How much do you bet he was controlling because he feared that she would cheat on him. Just another asshole assuming other people think like him.

Well first off, I will need a computer and can't get started without one. So I really am depending on all of you to finance this for me.

The pilot was polyamorous. He fucked everyone. He fucked them right into the ground.

I can have a lot of sympathy for troubled people who hurt themselves. But those that hurt others are assholes.
Troubled assholes, but assholes.

I'm sorry but you are present as the wrong gender to get donations pouring in. :snooty:

However, Ms Hensley may soon have a 2nd hand laptop available that she might let you have, pretty cheap.

Thanks everyone for your advise. I've played with settings and started using Mercury Browser. The tab refresh issue is not happening in that environment.

Bizarre is correct.
It's weird to think that Myers used to run a pretty good science blog.
Now, what is it?
He very rarely discusses any real science and when he does, as with the topics of ENCODE and Evo Psych, he invariably gets it wrong or hopelessly enmeshed with his own US centric leftist politics.
He has occasional swipes at creationists but his current readership aren't interested in that.

After ditching skepticism he has gradually shed his involvement with atheism.
Just look at the big stories in atheism over the past couple of months.
First the Charlie Hebdo murders - in which case he quickly came out on the side of those blaming the cartoonists for their own murders.
And more recently the series of vicious murders of prominent atheist bloggers in Bangladesh - for the crime of promoting secularism.
On those stories he has been absolutely silent (in contrast to Ophelia Benson, Maryam Namazie and Taslima Nasreen.)

Even the slymepit is bored with him these days!

He used to have a 'brand' as a snarky mocking anti-creationist who promoted science and skepticism.

Now PZ Myers is arguably the most unpleasant character in the entire blogosphere: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

(ooops - went a bit Avicenna at the end)

 Contexte! Contexte! Toujours le contexte! ;-)

As I had checked her Twitter page not long before then I kind of figured that she had just finished blocking me so I thought to return the favour - the principle of "retributive justice", an eye for an eye. Which someone had pointed out tends to result in a kingdom of the one-eyed. Therefore not a very good way to run a railroad much less a society.

It is maybe not clear from that tweet of hers, but it seems that from their Twitter pages both @Iancoggneato & @waitingirl13 link to the same blog so I kind of figured they're buddies and the "prick" was directed my way.

Clear? Or just as clear as mud? :-)
