Watson always outdoes me. I’ve long had a minimal diversity requirement of 25% non-white, non-male speakers. I may have to up that number to keep up.

Including the big award winner:
13 men
5 women
27.7% women.
Can someone ask PZ if he's willing to speak at such a sexist gathering?

Is there a male POC that can be pulled from the kitty?
Re: Nerds. Nerds EVERYWHERE...
But wait, his was only 25%. It's Watson who had to decline because of the 27% failure rate.

Old but functional. Until a week ago when I wanted to install OneNote. The app demanded a more recent OS, the release notes said the latest basically just included support for Apple Watch. Ho hum.
What a disaster. New crap version of Safari. Pages don't scroll properly, screen will hang or flash for a second when switching. Wifi is buggy and the Pit disengages constantly. Ugg.
I suspect Apple has maneuvered me into having to fork out a grand for the latest and greatest.
To do what worked until last week.

I don't know if any of you are Frank Herbert fans (but I imagine the answer is Yes). If so, then what the above reminds me of are the Pan Spechi from Whipping Star and Dosadi Experiment. The Pan Spechi would take on the form of other species, including humans. One way to detect that someone who looks human is really Pan Spechi is that they have a tendency to turn their head before they turn their eyes.LurkerPerson wrote: I've seen this particular move describbed as "insect-like".

Why is Jerry Coyne blocking...
The “Jerry Coyne blocking …†thread on Pharyngula is more of a container where people just dump their outrage, usual falsehoods (as per Myers' Law even if someone corrected it later) and animosities. It has indeed zero to do with any concrete scientific matter at all. The form is typical for PZ Myers — whether he wrote it himself or some minion in his stead. Many of his threads have more of a superficial opener text but are outrage containers where people just freely vent their anger at the designated target. That's typically free wheeling and PZ Myers, while commenting and banning, never has a problem when outright falsehoods and smears get dumped into the container meant for the target. Hypocritically, and here too, most of the criticism would be equally if not more true for PZ Myers himself. He indeed does silent ban, doesn't even bother to stick to any roolz and has otherwise very similar ideas as Jerry Coyne, e.g. first time commenters should plausibly want to contribute something and not rant out of the gate. Comments are moderated et cetera... (I too have no problem with it, if its plausible and transparent ).
PZ Myers occasional tone trolling and “how to do community†comments are just plain bizarre. Even if his comments tuned it down a bit — death wish derby and porcupines, dehumanizing and extreme insults — no apology was offered ever to anyone; no officially visible article is known where that was worked out; and the feuds that sprung from that behaviour persist to this very day. It's far from obsolete. I wonder how this dogpiling and chewtoy style, hamstringing the dissenter (they can't defend equally, that's trolling then) and then banning them anyway is supposed to be superior to sticking to roolz and enforcing them.

However, Ms Hensley may soon have a 2nd hand laptop available that she might let you have, pretty cheap.

Re: Why is Jerry Coyne blocking...
"PZ Myers occasional tone trolling and “how to do community†comments are just plain bizarre."Aneris wrote:The “Jerry Coyne blocking …†thread on Pharyngula is more of a container where people just dump their outrage, usual falsehoods (as per Myers' Law even if someone corrected it later) and animosities.
Bizarre is correct.
It's weird to think that Myers used to run a pretty good science blog.
Now, what is it?
He very rarely discusses any real science and when he does, as with the topics of ENCODE and Evo Psych, he invariably gets it wrong or hopelessly enmeshed with his own US centric leftist politics.
He has occasional swipes at creationists but his current readership aren't interested in that.
After ditching skepticism he has gradually shed his involvement with atheism.
Just look at the big stories in atheism over the past couple of months.
First the Charlie Hebdo murders - in which case he quickly came out on the side of those blaming the cartoonists for their own murders.
And more recently the series of vicious murders of prominent atheist bloggers in Bangladesh - for the crime of promoting secularism.
On those stories he has been absolutely silent (in contrast to Ophelia Benson, Maryam Namazie and Taslima Nasreen.)
Even the slymepit is bored with him these days!
He used to have a 'brand' as a snarky mocking anti-creationist who promoted science and skepticism.
Now PZ Myers is arguably the most unpleasant character in the entire blogosphere: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

As I had checked her Twitter page not long before then I kind of figured that she had just finished blocking me so I thought to return the favour - the principle of "retributive justice", an eye for an eye. Which someone had pointed out tends to result in a kingdom of the one-eyed. Therefore not a very good way to run a railroad much less a society.
It is maybe not clear from that tweet of hers, but it seems that from their Twitter pages both @Iancoggneato & @waitingirl13 link to the same blog so I kind of figured they're buddies and the "prick" was directed my way.
Clear? Or just as clear as mud? :-)
Re: Nerds. Nerds EVERYWHERE...
I have never really considered the implications of one eyed train drivers. Give me a moment to process.
