Pitchguest wrote:No, I changed my avatar to solidify the absurdity of the situation, and to show solidarity to Taylor. There is a cause and effect to this. It didn't start with, let's shoop Taylor's shirt onto other historical figures. It started with people exaggerating the significance of his shirt to such a degree that him wearing it actively prevents women from entering the STEM field, and actually feeling welcome in STEM. The culmination of which was Matt Taylor crying on television because he felt he had commited some grievous error, when all he had really done was wear an, at worst, tacky shirt. Oh, and the first to lead a team landing a probe on a comet moving 135,000 an hour.
It doesn't matter what he wore. Different professions carry different social mores, like dress codes. Turns out scientists can still be hired even if they're covered in tattoos, and turns out scientists can still do their job even if they happen to wear tacky shirts, khakis and sandals. If this was a news footage of a farmer, would anyone have a gave a toss? Probably not, because the important thing for a farmer is that they get their harvest done in time and everyone's happy.
(I think it needs to be pointed out how vastly different the atmosphere was like before the shirtstorm had kicked off, and after. Before he was giddy and jovial, after he was sullen and distant wearing clothes that could only be described as bleak and boring. I suppose those are clothes that would have been preferable in your eyes, but honestly it was just sad to watch. It was like his personality had been ripped out.)
The problem with your line of thinking is that most people (at least in the states) think the shirt was not just tacky. The shirt is considered offensive and degrading. By defending his choice, you are perpetuating the idea that the menz are insensitive to women and are creating a hostile environment. I realize it would be nice if the womenz had thicker skin and could just ignore this... but... most people are not ready for this.
I think the best thing to do is to not defend his choice of shirt. The best thing to do is to simply agree that it was a poor choice, but that it is a mild offense and Taylor should be forgiven.
I realize youall think I am a corporate clone, but most people are corporate clones... and we have been trained for the last two decades that certain stuff is not right in the workplace. Girlie pics (even clothed girlies) have been verboten for years now. I just don't think that this little topic is worth fighting about.
The justification for restricting free speech in the workplace is to promote effectiveness for the team. Political and/or offensive speech are sometimes destructive in the workplace. The key is to setup a generally agreed to set of guidelines and to promote people fitting in. That is why we start with training, then follow up with a warning, then escalate only if needed. People need to be given the benefit of the doubt because it is not always obvious what someone will find offensive.

Well at least John and I agree that if his bosses had asked him to switch shirts, he should have. And even Matt I suspect would have followed through.
We disagree about the positive/negative impact of wearing the shirt. Many people were impressed at what they thought was a cool hip scientist instead of just a stiff suit.
John,
Had the guy been wearing a well made hawian shirt minus the the pin up girl stuff, would you have found that acceptable?
I personally don't find his girlie shirt offensive.... but... I think a fun and wacky shirt would have come across as a big win for Taylor. A few people would have scoffed a bit and said he was clowning around a bit too much, but I suspect 95% of people would have thought it was great. He would have earned some points for bucking the corporate drone culture.
The real problem with the shirt is the fact that it has girlie pictures on it.
I have said this before... it is really too bad one of his colleagues didn't say "Hey Matt.... it will probably be fine to wear a wacky shirt today... but not THAT wacky shirt!"

The correct option is 'check your math.'
I was actually referring to the first set of numbers: 3, 21, 41, 10, and 22. My "96%" is a typo, but those numbers cannot reach 100%, no matter how you like to round.
That's 97. And it's very easy to explain in that there are lots of different types of rounding strategies. Some of them just truncate the numbers in a poorly designed rounding-off strategy. Some are antique rounding strategies that are hold-overs from the old days, like when we used these Burroughs Business Machines:
http://www.glen-l.com/wordpress/wp-cont ... imatic.jpg
(And, yes, I am old enough to have actually used one of those. It was legacy, but it was still used.)
And some is just shit coding where the display is truncated instead of rounded (which is what I think is probably happening).
So, no 'sixth term' is necessary. Just the recognition that it's probably poorly displayed and/or lousy programing and/or improper (by today's standards) rounding.

Agreed. You have to remember that we're talking about
groupies here, which already suggests a certain level of mental instability. You need to ask yourself "If Bill Cosby had sex with a lot of groupies, is it plausible that at least twelve of them could have had expectations of a relationship, and when they realized they were really just a temporary sex-toy to Cosby, could they gradually have nursed their resentment into a belief that they were raped?"

The shirt is an EU matter and the opinion of people in the US is irrelevant. I'm sick to death of people in the US subjecting their twisted morality and 'acceptable standards' onto others. So forgive me if I do not give a toss about the opinion of SJW's or people here who think their standards are the only ones allowed. Keep considering as quite normal images of people having their heads blown off while fainting over a nipple. Not everyone in this world has the same twisted outlook on life.

They don't apply to any lab my wife has worked at in her life. They don't apply to the operating room. They don't apply to the fire department or police department or ambulance drivers or pretty much anyone in any kind of emergency services. They don't apply to virtually every blue-collar job in Europe and North America.
And that's what you don't get. You don't get to foist YOUR dress code on others working in different environments. You're in ONE of MANY valid and different working environments. What is 'right' in yours isn't 'right' in all.

This is not really a dress code topic. It is a sexual harassment topic. Sexually suggestive images are generally off limits in most workplaces in the US and (I suspect) most European countries. Of course this doesn't apply at sex shops or whatever, because their business is trading in that material.
All the workers you named (doctors, firefighters, line workers) would likely be told to change if they had sexual images on their shirt. This is not really that hard to understand.

Yeah - some of the sexual harassment training is a bit off. When this stuff first hit the US in the early 90s the policies were too broad and the punishments too severe. Recently most policies provide the opportunity for the "offender" to change their behavior, and apologize before anything serious happens. The accusations are also scrutinized by management to determine if the person is being overly sensitive.
I give this advice to everyone: If you are accused of saying something offensive at work immediately tell them you are very sorry and will never do it again. State that you were taking an antihistamine for allergies and were feeling loopy. This is a pretty decent defense for a first offense. (Hey... I don't make the rules, but I will get fired if I don't follow them).

I don't know what country that is, but they're probably the world's leading exporter of welts.

Are you by any chance related to Ophelia "the internet is my workplace" Benson?
It's up to people he works with to make a complaint if they consider his shirt to be sexual harassment. Not a bunch of random people getting offended because they caught a glimpse of his shirt on the idiot box.

I want everything at that store! :) Never heard of it before, but it's now in my shopping bookmarks.
Agreed.

Avicenna,
Sorry but you are wrong on one point. Dawkins has in fact been elected as the new atheist pope. Upon the death of the former atheist pope (Christopher Hitchens) a secretive MRA-conclave was held within the confines of the pit to elect their new leader. Once they had settled on Dawkins, they released a photoshopped picture of white smoke billowing out of Professor Myers’ backside.
Now they treat every Dawkins utterance and tweet as if were an atheist-papal bull, and they fawn all over him just to get the chance to reach out and touch his robes as he ushers past.
In all seriousness, we have heard rumors about the most loyal Dawkinsian pitters having regular Google-handouts where they have readings from The God Delusion and sermons delivered by ordained atheists priests like Mykeru.
Someone blurting out secrets from the backchannel! The leak needs to be sealed now!

Interesting. I did a Google but could not find a book titled exactly that, but I did find a book entitled: Complete Idiot's Guide to Boosting Your Immunity.

I was actually referring to the first set of numbers: 3, 21, 41, 10, and 22. My "96%" is a typo, but those numbers cannot reach 100%, no matter how you like to round.
Of course they can, if you round down anything to .99999...of 1%.
Floating point math is a bitch in binary. Javascript, in particular, since it uses the IEEE 754 standard, is prone to rounding errors.

Someone should spin this "Bill Cosby is a rapist" thing into a "people are accusing the Black man to be a rapist" thing, and shove it back on SJW's collective asses for them to solve it. Assholes.

Well, I for one am glad that the pit has some men who are well endowed in the moobie department and not shy about it.
Well, they aren't *really* men, since there are no differences between the sexes, so by objectifying them, we are really objectifying women, who are actually the same thing as men. Yeah.

P. Z. fails to Pharyngulate poll, is humiliated as cats win overwhelmingly (ergo a prize)
Even though P. Z. Myers seems to hate cats—at least judging by his frequent “anti-Caturday†posts—he owns at least one felid. It’s beyond me how one can hate an animal and yet own one (I weep for that moggie), and the man really should get a squid if he’s going to bang on like this.
At any rate, the bad news is that he tried to Pharyngulate the cats-vs.-dogs-vs.-babies poll, sending over his squidly minions to vote for . . . . none of the above!. But thanks to some judicious advertising next to his request, he became hoist with his own petard (h/t to alert reader Kevin for the screenshot):
http://whyevolutionistrue.files.wordpre ... =754&h=522
Really, what chance did the man have with an adorable tabby kitten placed right next to his call for dissing cats? Indeed, his call was futile. The final result of the poll (well, a result that hasn’t changed much in the past two days) is this:
http://whyevolutionistrue.files.wordpre ... =354&h=238
Now let’s not be complacent, as the sycophantic horde of squidophiles keeps cuttling over to the site and voting for the last category. If you haven’t voted for cats yet, do so early and often (here). But for the nonce I think we’ve not only put kittehs on top, but soundly trounced the Pharyngulites, who are now creeping home with limp, soggy tentacles dragging behind.
The good news is that I will award a prize to one randomly-selected reader. On Monday, after judicious application of a random number generator, I’ll give the name of the lucky winner of an autographed copy of WEIT. The flyleaf will contain not only my signature, but my warm personal congratulations and a hand-drawn kitteh.
Thanks to all for participating, and vote if you haven’t yet. You can still enter the contest by voting the right way and noting your vote on this thread. You have till Sunday afternoon.
http://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com ... o-a-prize/
Notice how few votes on the poll. If they took it to 20% from 6% and the poll was at 3700ish votes... That's make the horde responsible for about 16% of the 22% 'none' category which I'm roughly computing to be somewhere around 550 votes.
BTW, it ended like this:
Do You Prefer:
Adorable Pictures of Babies? 0%
Adorable Pictures of Puppies? 3%
Adorable Pictures of Kittens? 89%
All of the Above 1%
None of the Above 5%
Closed Total Votes: 33,660
I don't know how much came from Coyne. But it was an incredibly massive swing. Not only were the 'none's' crushed, but it also skewed the hell out of the puppies and babies from the overwhelming rush on kittens.
And I take that as a good sign. A sign that Myers really doesn't have the following he used to have. I remember crushing some polls by over 10K+ swings as thousands and thousands of people would rush to crush the poll. Now he's being crushed.
I gathered some data on this, because why not? Turns out you can not get stats on alexa about individual pages within freethought blogs, but a comparison between ftb and why evolution is true shows a significantly larger following for ftb. Its a comparision between a single blog and a network though, so that is probably part of the story (although I can't imagine boring shit like the blogs of Yemmy or Richard Carrier are bringing many people in the door). I also looked into patheos since a lot of FTB defectors went there, and it looks like patheos is way ahead of FTB. Part of that might be the fact that patheos is dedicated to a larger segment of the population than the a/s community, but in any case, I'll take it.
Anyway, FTB isn't as dead as I'd like, and I'm guessing the outcome of that poll is not a case of Coyne squashing PZ like a bug. Probably its a case of the internet being cat crazy and not giving a fuck about PZ's tentacle rape fetish. What delurch said about PZ not getting links on 3rd party sites might also be part of the picture.
