Thanks to whoever put the link to tumblr stuff earlier because it led me to #DashCon - the first con organized by tumblr members with predictable results. Including, but not limited to, low attendance, not paying for guest hotel rooms, multiple guests leaving early, raising 17k through attendee skypes on the first day (apparantly to pay the hotel bill), lying about why guests left early and blaming the guests, etc... :)
Here's a link to one guest's post but there's loads more lulz out there: http://bakerstreetbabes.tumblr.com/post ... 5/dash-con

Almost forgot, the main attraction left because they weren't going to be paid. As a substitute, people who'd booked to see them were offered a free hour in the ball pool - this is an small inflatable kiddy pool, filled with balls, in the middle of a cavernous hall.

The Darmok episode became such an in-group reference-fest amongst grad school friends for me, that I can no longer remember how I really felt about it. Sometimes I'm tempted to use it when introducing a crapton of neuroscience terminology to students, but so far I've resisted.Gumby wrote:My favorite TNG line of all time: Q appearing on the bridge and asking Worf "Eat any good books lately?" The episodes set in the Klingon home world were awesome, however, especially the Redemption ones.
Blecch. That made me cringe.... and I also liked the "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" one.

PS - Just noticing Justin's update on Baxter's tweets. Sounds like he is not so confident about any legal battle with Radford. His language is one of settling and forgetting everything. That is a big contrast to 4-5 months ago when the Baboons were cheering him and Karen on....

John C. Welch, have you read Pinker's "blank slate...." book?
Or has Steersman's citing every seventh post tutrned you away from such contemplation?
Anyway. it's been years and years since I last read it, but I seem to recall he has some very interesting things to say (and, as always, he backs it up with a shit load of citations) about human ethics, and such ethics being predominantly innate, and only cultural in so much as the culture defines the colour, so to speak, of those ethics.
Or have I missed the point?
Not unheard of.

Honestly I'm a bit embarrassed about it. These kind of control issues were a problem for me in my youth. I can't tell you how many smashed boomboxes and other consumer electronics I have in my past. Once, many years ago, when I was at a job site I destroyed an expensive piece of equipment that was frustrating me. Luckily there were no witnesses so I got away with it.Lsuoma wrote:katamari Damassi wrote:Well, problem solved. In a fit of rage I just smashed it to pieces. I've only ever lost it on people a couple of times in my life, and it's been nearly 20 years since the last episode. It's no Thimbledick story of unleashing the monster, badass triumph, as I thoroughly got my ass kicked. As in trip to the hospital, stitches in my face kind of ass kicking.

Baxter says "Team Radford didn't bother us and we didn't bother them. We CAN all just get along."
Not quite what I'd expect the husband of a sexual assault victim to say about those who publicly support her assaulter (at a conference she spoke at, no less). I'm married, and I can tell you right now that I'd never say anything like that if I genuinely believed that someone had sexually assaulted (and harassed) my wife multiple times. I don't think I'm just being uncharitable when I read this statement as further evidence that the accusations are false.

I was stopped once while cycling home from work in London, by a bunch of Irish football fans who'd been watching the World Cup in a pub. They'd stopped a bus as well, and pulled the hood (bonnet?) off. Fortunately for me, their team had just won a match. Also, I happened to be wearing an orange jacket over a green shirt that day. Afterwards I decided that in the interest of self-preservation and maybe trying to fit in a little, it's best to pay a bit of attention to what's going on in football.

Yep. He'd walk in and everyone else would stop their shit and he'd stomp their shit. The B5 writers kept creating reasons to weaken him or imprison him, but he still commanded total respect and exuded power and sliminess at all times.welch wrote:That character was brilliant. He just blew away everyone else in the room whenever he was on screen.James Caruthers wrote:Heh, I agree about Mr. Koenig. I thought Scotty was funny though. A very hammy actor, but quite enjoyable. He doesn't fit with the setting at all. :lol:katamari Damassi wrote:BTW- I was fine with Uhura. There are moments when Nichelle Nicholes' got to shine. She improvised one of my favorite lines. In the episode Naked Time when the crew is acting drugged, Sulu grabs Uhura and says "I'll protect you fair maiden!" To which she replies in a low voice, "Sorry, neither."
Walter Koenig and James Doohan were the worst of that cast IMHO.
Walter Koenig went on to feature heavily in Babylon 5 and, in many ways, became Babylon 5's Garak. He's absolutely brilliant in that show, and I say that as someone who would probably only give B5 a 3/5 mediocre/good ranking overall. The episodes with Koenig are some of the best.
I really liked Kai Winn, but the prophets, not so much. Kira's constant banging of the oppression gong whenever someone pointed out her hypocrisy also grated on me.

My wife used to watch Star Trek: TNG quite a lot. I enjoyed about 3 episodes mostly though I was entirely annoyed by Data. Here was a supposedly super smart android with all sorts of bells and whistles that practically every week would say things like "What do you mean, kettle of fish?" and cock his head slightly at the odd things we humans say. I used to get so sick of shouting at the screen, "Why does he not know that?!" All that programming, all those languages and he never seems to understand a single turn of phrase. Personally I enjoyed it much more when I considered him the ships token mentally impaired human that the rest of the crew pretended was an android, lest he have a catastrophic homicidal breakdown.

While we're on sci fi, anyone remember Earth Final Conflict? It had a great plot and atmosphere, yet it pretty much went downhill from the beginning to the end. I think the cast kept leaving so the producers couldn't make continuous character development part of the story. The final season just went to shit really.

There has been a real lack of space operas of late, did the outrageously nonsensical and ridiculously grim reboot of Battlestar Galactica just flog that dead horse until even fans of such things grew weary?
